Letter from Executive Director Danelle Glasscock
I grew up as a Girl Scout and was raised by a Girl Scout. I know more silly campfire songs, many with hand motions, than I'd care to admit for almost any occasion in life. I can also credit many more skills from my time spent in Scouting: I have contemplated adding "campfire building" to my resume, and if there was an Olympic event of best marshmallow roaster I'm sure I would win (you can just imagine my long love affair with S'mores)! But there were also some more serious leadership principles and skills I acquired from my scouting experience. One being: Always leave a place better than you found it. While in scouting, I think this principle was my Scout Leader's (who was also my Mom) way of getting us to clean the trash and litter up around our campsite and Scouting Hut. But I do think this principle has great life implications for all of us. As we start a new year together in community, let's make this our goal for this year. Leave the Greater Kingsport community better than we found it. Let's all choose to invest our time, talent and resources into making this community better. I truly believe that everyone can contribute. Let's not leave this goal up to just a few, for if we all contribute something, we can accomplish this goal. Local Support and Gracious Giving | Food City and Dietz & Watson
Food City and Dietz & Watson recently partnered with local radio station WTFM-FM to host two exciting holiday programs. In Families Helping Families, Dietz & Watson donated 10 cents for every pound of their deli meats and cheeses purchased at Food City locations between Nov. 14 and Dec. 11 to the United Way. Above, a representative of United Way accepts the check from Food City and Dietz & Watson. As part of Meals for the Military, listeners were invited to write in to nominate local first responders, military personnel and other public servants who deserved assistance during the holidays. Five winners were selected to receive a Dietz & Watson carved dinner ham and a $150 Food City gift card. The awards were presented during a ceremony held at the Eastman Road Food City.

The United Way of Greater Kingsport (UWGK) celebrated its annual Leadership Giving Event Tuesday evening. The reception took place at the Social and welcomed 135 guests. A Leadership Giver is someone who donates $500 or more to UWGK annually. Each year the United Way of Greater Kingsport acknowledges the generosity of approximately 2200 Leadership Givers, who share UWGK's commitment to the community, its people, and its future. These generous gifts improve the lives of over 1400 friends, neighbors, co-workers, and community members each day.

Tennessee, Hunter, Smith & Davis LLP, and Jacobs. Bill and Tricia Argabrite (Signature Club Chairs) and Bill and Cathy Trapp (Signature Club Vice-Chairs) took on the role of party planners for the occasion. UWGK staff welcomed guests and celebrated with dinner, drinks and a night of mingling. During this event UWGK board members and staff recognized and thanked contributors for their generous donations and commitment to the Kingsport community and United Way mission to improve lives. "Our campaign theme for 2018 was United We Fight, United We Win. United Way of Greater Kingsport helps improve lives every single day through member agencies, programs, and community impact initiatives. You were invited here tonight because you are a Leadership Giver and we wanted to thank you. If this is your first year to give at the Leadership level in Kingsport, welcome," said Signature Club Chair, Bill Argabrite. United Way of Greater Kingsport recognizes the members of three prestigious Leadership Giving Societies: the Alexis de Tocqueville Society ($10,000 and above), the Signature Club ($1,000 to $9,999), and the Initial Club ($500 to $999). The dollars raised by the UWGK stay in the Greater Kingsport community to fight for the health, education, and financial stability of every person. Danelle Glasscock was honored to represent the United Way of Greater Kingsport as a co-host of the annual New Presidents Forum for United Way Worldwide held in Alexandria January 8-10. Together with Rodney Prunty, United Way of Racine County (Wisconsin), they provided over 75 new United Way CEO's and Executive Directors from around the country insights from their own experiences in their respective high performing United Ways. Danelle also led a creative learning exercise, "Hike to a Waterfall" to encourage United Ways to choose the more difficult but rewarding path of Community Impact.The forum was organized by Amy Dinofrio, Director of HR and Talent Management for UWW. The New Presidents Forum is an annual event organized for all new United Way executives. It is part of the onboarding process to welcome and engage new United Way CEOs and Executive Directors in United Way's priorities and provide an overview on our strategic direction. Together the Talent Management, and US Network Teams have developed this event as an opportunity to learn, network, gain a better understanding of the United Way business model, and learn how to execute it. CEOs will spend the time meeting United Way Worldwide leaders, learning from other prominent network leaders. sharing best practices amongst colleagues and advocating on Capitol Hill.
