I’ve been both a donor and a volunteer with United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County for many years. Like you, my contributions of time or resources have ebbed and flowed as my own life circumstances have shifted, but this organization and its mission have remained a core commitment of mine. Today, I’m proud to serve as board chair.
During this time, United Way has also evolved. What has remained constant is our commitment to bringing people, partners, and resources together to tackle tough challenges that no single organization can tackle alone. What has changed is how we do that work.
Last year, as our staff pivoted once again to address the emerging crisis brought about by Hurricane Helene, our board of directors finalized the 2026-28 Strategic Plan. This plan was solidified as a historic and regional crisis required us to be even more intentional, more connected, and take our efforts to a greater scale. It challenged us to think not only about how to supercharge our long-standing commitment to strengthening Youth Opportunity, but also about how United Way’s infrastructure can support our Community’s Resiliency in the years to come.
I’ve been especially struck by how much of our strength lies in what we build every day. The partnerships we cultivate and the infrastructure we invest in are the very things that allow us to respond with clarity and coordination when it matters most.
I also love that, even with more than 100 years of experience, United Way sees itself as a learning organization. We continue to learn from communities across the country and from those individuals and organizations deeply rooted in our own backyard.
Serving as board chair has provided an incredible opportunity to engage, interact, and listen in our community. We can lift up our community when we work together in a coordinated and strategic way is infectious, and real. I believe that as United Way increases its capacity to work with and support community partners across all sectors, we will see lasting and meaningful change. It is an exciting time to be a champion of our United Way.

We value our identity as a strong, independent, locally governed United Way. At the same time, we appreciate and rely on the shared wisdom available through United Way Worldwide and other local United Ways across the country.
Local United Ways operating Community Schools have long been a source of support. And more recently, we’ve leaned on and learned from this national network of United Ways, especially those who have survived and responded to natural disasters like Helene.
Their collective wisdom and experience have strengthened our work and expanded our thinking about how we can support community resilience in the long term.
When the storm hit, the United Way of Southeast Louisiana staff and leadership reached out. Having survived Katrina, their CEO shared sage advice that helped us organize our thoughts in those early and chaotic days. But they didn’t stop there. Their staff raised funds to support our team and their loved ones. We were humbled by their support. -- Dan Leroy

In our early years of implementing the community school strategy, we learned so much from those further ahead of us. Today, we often serve as subject matter experts for others. This is true as efforts to expand community schools statewide have gained momentum.

For over a decade, we have focused on ensuring every young person has the opportunity to thrive through our support for Community Schools and United for Youth.
Through these efforts, we connect people, organizations, and resources to achieve our shared Bold Community Goal:
All Asheville City and Buncombe County students graduate from high school ready and fully prepared to pursue their goals and dreams.
Every young person deserves to live in a community that believes in their potential and stands by them as they navigate an increasingly complex world.
By strengthening schools, supporting families, and working together, UWABC and our partners are building a future where every student in Asheville and Buncombe County can learn, grow, and succeed, with no exceptions.
COMMUNITY SCHOOLS
On an ordinary school afternoon, something extraordinary is happening across our nine Community Schools.
At North Buncombe Middle, the hallways buzz after the bell rings—not to rush home, but to stay. Chessboards fill tables, and so many students want to play that the club now meets twice a week. Across town, students at Enka Middle are also staying late—more than 75% are involved in clubs, sports, or mentor groups. Attendance is up, and English language learners are finding a sense of belonging through the FAROS (UNETE) program.
At Hall Fletcher, a night once attended by a few dozen families now welcomes more than 275. By pairing Title I Reading Night with a Community Night, the school became a place of food, learning, and connection. Families stop by the Resource Room, while teachers recharge through small but meaningful staff appreciation efforts.
In December, joy spread everywhere. Asheville High/SILSA served 500 students through the Holiday Dream Project. Reynolds Middle welcomed more than 300 family members for Cookies and Coats. Enka Intermediate opened its doors to

200 people, offering warmth, essentials, and care. At Erwin Middle, a holiday event with Black Men Monday reflected years of growing partnerships—part of why staff morale is rising, and discipline problems are down.
From Zen rooms for teachers to mentor groups where shy students bloom, these moments add up. Different schools. Same story. When schools become community hubs, students, families, and staff don’t just show up—they thrive.
WHERE YOU CAN FIND US
Last year, we met our goal to expand to 9 locations when both Enka Intermediate and Hall Fletcher Elementary Schools signed on as Community School sites.
We’ve been supporting local families and our educators for more than 10 years. This work is a product of your support and is having statewide impact as other school systems look to us as an example in this work.
Three months after Helene landed, United for Youth’s (U4Y) Leadership Team gathered, still feeling the storm’s impact and still united by the Bold Community Goal that has guided their work for three years.
This community-designed team, hosting representatives from schools, local government, nonprofits, and community partners, continued diving into community data to discern what objectives might drive our community closer to the Bold Community Goal.
One priority emerged: the critical role of Caring, Trusted, and Engaged Adults—a focus grounded in the belief that relationships build resilience and long-term success.
Shared leadership became a reality. Guided by “nothing for our children, without our children,” the U4Y Youth Leadership Team grew and became the Council of Young Advocates, with youth from across the county applying and interviewing to step in as decision-makers.
Together, youth and adult leaders defined what it takes to achieve the Bold Community Goal. They identified six opportunity objectives, organized around strategies for each age group, from cradle to career, to ensure all young people have consistent access to Caring, Trusted, and Engaged Adults.
Today, the group has begun bringing community leaders together to form Impact teams that will develop strategies for each opportunity objective. While the United for Youth Leadership Team monitors progress, those closest to the work will drive implementation—bringing creativity and accountability to ensure lasting change.

COMMUNITY RESILIENCY
When crisis strikes—whether a global pandemic or a storm like Helene—our community needs trusted systems ready to respond.
For more than 100 years, United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County has built the relationships and tools that make swift, coordinated action possible.
Our Community Engagement team listens directly to those most impacted to identify urgent needs.
Our Volunteer Center mobilizes neighbors to support front-line partners.
Our Resource Development and Finance teams rapidly raise and distribute critical funds. And our infrastructure allows us to serve as a fiscal sponsor to emerging response efforts like the Buncombe County Long-Term Recovery Group.
And NC 211 scales up to connect thousands with real-time help.
As we continue recovering, we are strengthening these systems—so Buncombe County is prepared not only to heal from today’s challenges, but to meet whatever comes next with resilience.
Helene Investments To Date
Helene not only brought record breaking devastation to our region, it brought an influx of resources from individuals and companies from across the nation, including volunteers and both inkind and cash donations.
We were fortunate to have the infrastructure and ability to pivot our operations to address the emerging needs of the crisis and support both City and County governments as well as our nonprofit and faith community.
TOTAL FUNDS PROCESSED
United Way’s Board of Directors approved an overarching investment strategy for donations and grants designated for Helene. Within 2 weeks of the storm we had sent funds out to local nonprofits and by December we had distibuted more than $2.2M
Within Recovery Funding we categorized investments further and determined how much funding to allot:
• Systemic Funding: groups addressing broader social and economic impacts, such as housing, employment, transportation, resiliency/future preparedness.
• Community Schools: support for students and their families impacted by the storm. Each community school has funds they can invest based on the findings of each school’s resource team.
• Urgent Needs: A discretionary fund will provide grants of up to $50,000 to community groups in the hardest hit areas that have an immediate need that requires a nimble response.
Keeping an eye toward the long term need of the area, we will pace funding within Systemic Issues and Community Schools over several years.
Since the beginning, we’ve been committed to ensuring transparancy related to our Helene investment picture. The charts on this page reflect Helene funds we’ve collected and invested since the storm, through March 30, 2026. For our FY25 Fiscal Report turn to page 23.
RECOVERY INVESTMENTS
Americorps NCCC
National Service In Action
One of the ways our volunteer engagement department supported our community after the storm was to apply for and host two AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) crews.
Contributing nearly 5,000 hours of muscle and spirit to the response efforts in our community, these 17 crew members helped exhausted local leaders distribute relief in communities like Black Mountain, Swannanoa, and Barnardsville. Their work proves the value of federal programs when matched with strong local partnerships.
We are grateful to be in a position to fund and support this important community resiliency work and we are grateful to everyone who called and wrote our representatives when the program was unexpectedly slated to be dismantled this year. Your efforts paid off and as we write this Annual Report, a third group is hard at work in the Swannanoa and Black Mountain area.

Looking At Our Work and Building In a New Way
Our “everyday assets” -- our partnerships, systems, and physical infrastructure are all important elements that can help us respond during a crisis. Here are just a few examples of that in action:

Years of relationship-building and a convening role with nonprofits, government, faith community, and business.
Even with current limitations, conference rooms became a supply distribution center. Offices, an emergency childcare center for staff. We provided space for our nonprofit tenants to shift their roles including FEMA digital navigation.
Buncombe County Government immediately placed us on Emergency Operation Center’s Volunteer and Donation Emergency Support team. We were asked to facilitate their 41,000 SF warehouse getting 2,606 boxes of supplies to 68 organizations. We now serve as a facilitator and fiscal sponsor and to our community’s Long Term Recovery Group and their 8–10 year recovery strategy.
We connect individuals and groups to service opportunities; manage recruitment, placement, and engagement year-round.
Volunteer website redesigned for disaster relief. Sent 7K subscribers weekly emails. Operated a VRC. In one year: 6,190 volunteers mobilized, 17,121 opportunities, 51 organizations supported.

The Power of Partnerships
We’ve been building partnerships and support systems at area schools for over 10 years. When the storm hit, that work kicked into high gear across the county. Whether it was assisting staff with vital efforts to account for every student early on in the crisis, ongoing resource distribution, or setting up space for community gatherings at the schools, our team was ready to take action.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Our Community Engagement team manages key elements of our outward facing work and supports the inner work needed to show up for our community. Here are just a few examples:
• AWARENESS handsonasheville.org gives local nonprofits a free place to list their volunteer needs. Thousands of people on our strong mailing list get regular updates about available opportunities on the site.
People know to come to our site when big things happen -- in the days following the storm, our site saw a 930% increase in traffic from people wanting to help!
• BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT Our team has always worked closely with local businesses to connect their teams to meaningful volunteer opportunities.
Recently, MSD (Metropolitan Sewer District) improved an outdoor lunch and recreation space at Reynolds Middle with 9.5 tons of gravel and a lot of heart.
At the same time, Eaton set up a new teachers lounge at Asheville Middle (they didn’t have one), supporting self care in stressful times.
• REMOVING BARRIERS Several years ago, four organizations (Team Us, Life’s Creations, KL Training Solutions, and Project Lighten Up) were selected to participate in a pilot funding model designed to support work that is rooted in community voice, lived experience, and shared leadership. Lessons from that grant making process, including expansion of application methods, continue to influence our work today.
• SHOW UP It is really easy to get into the routine of inviting people to our events, our meetings, our projects. But it is really important for us to show up for others as well.
Our Community Engagement team has created a calendar for staff to use that allows us to identify what is happening in the community and share the responsibility not just for attending, but also bringing back “lessons learned.”
Eaton and Big Brothers Big Sisters made a fun night for robotics possible for middle school youth.
A DAY OF CONNECTION
A Day of Connection is more than a volunteer opportunity— it is an invitation into the heart of our work. Each month, our Volunteer Engagement team brings together local businesses, community schools, and nonprofit partners to create meaningful, hands-on experiences.
These moments are designed not only to serve, but to deepen understanding—offering supporters a firsthand look at how community schools operate as vital hubs of care, stability, and opportunity.
Truist Bank is one of many companies that have stepped up to do this work. During this Day of Connection, Truist employees partnered with staff at Erwin Middle School by moving, organizing, and reimagining key areas of the school.
By the end of the day, boxes of donated supplies were neatly organized for local families to access and an empty classroom had been transformed into a welcoming teacher lounge that will provide a calming space for our educators who do so much to support students every day.

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP
A foundation of United Way is our reliance on community members and their role in helping to shape and drive our work.
Whether it was helping to raise money or make funding decisions, volunteers from across this community helped to shape our work since our founding in 1921.
Today, one of our organization’s guiding principles is “Centering Community Wisdom” in our work. And, over the past few years, we’ve worked hard to expand the tent, making sure those that are most impacted by the issues we’re addressing are centered in the work.
Community Conversations, Listening Sessions, Asset and Needs Assessments, and surveys are just some of the ways we gather community expertise and lived experience.
We also have a growing number of committee and engagement opportunities that help to guide our work throughout the year.
This section celebrates just a few of those people.
CHARLOTTE LUNSFORD BERRY
Charlotte Lunsford Berry passed on November 7, 2025 after living a life defined by service, generosity, and an unshakable belief that communities are strongest when people step forward to help one another. For more than 30 years, she was a guiding force within the United Way network at the local, state, and national levels.
After moving to Asheville in 1960, Charlotte began volunteering with the American Red Cross, where she later served as Board Chair. Through that work, she became deeply involved with United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, launching a legacy of leadership that would break barriers and set new standards.
In 1981, Charlotte became our first female campaign chair, leading a historic campaign that raised more than $1.3 million. Just a few years later, she again made history as the first female chair of the Board of Directors.
Charlotte was a founding member of the Peaks Society and helped establish the Alexis de Tocqueville Society in both Asheville and Columbia, South Carolina. Alongside her husband Joe, she modeled generosity through their own giving, becoming Million Dollar Roundtable members in 2000. Her commitment extended nationally through leadership roles with United Way of America, including National Chair of Planned Giving.
Even into her 90s, Charlotte’s passion never faded. During a 2022 visit to our office, she eagerly engaged with staff, asked thoughtful questions, and encouraged the next generation of leaders. Her parting words captured her lifelong spirit of service: “I’ll be in touch about what I can help with.”
Thank you Charlotte. Your legacy lives on in stronger communities and countless lives changed through your leadership, vision, and unwavering belief in the power of giving. You are missed.
JERRY STERNBERG
On December 25, 2025 our community lost a one-of-a-kind force of nature. Jerry Sternberg was a sharp, good-hearted, and generous human. A strong supporter to a number of causes, Jerry paid attention. He asked the tough questions, stayed informed, and held us all to a higher standard.
But Jerry also knew how to make people smile. He often arrived at events in a suit, cowboy hat and, more often than not, his own “light” beer in hand; he liked what he liked and made no apologies. Jerry blended down-home wisdom with real-world savvy, and never lost sight of the people behind the work. We continue to miss his humor, his heart, and his unwavering presence in the life of this community.

Under the leadership of Kyla Morton and Jasmine Bright, the Christine Avery Learning Center is a model of communityrooted care and innovation. CWA provides high-quality early learning, afterschool, and summer programs, especially for children from historically marginalized communities. After Hurricane Helene, Kyla and Jasmine led the launch of the new Valley Campus in Swannanoa. Their leadership supports youth success countywide and helps guide United Way’s community investment work.

Whether volunteering directly with United Way or community partners like the Salvation Army, Allen leads with joy, consistency and a deep belief in community care, education, and mentorship.
Debra is honored for her steady leadership, deep compassion, and long-standing commitment to Asheville. As a board member, donor, and inaugural co-chair of the United for Youth Leadership Team, she has helped create greater opportunity for local youth. Through moments of crisis and change—including the pandemic, social justice movements, and Hurricane Helene—Debra has led with clarity and care. Her quiet courage and collaboration have left a lasting impact on our community.

CirCLe of hope
Norma has been a trusted partner to United Way for years, leading with humility and a strong commitment to equity and justice. Through her leadership of UNETE, she has built meaningful relationships and programs that support Latino families and youth through education and mentorship. After Hurricane Helene, Norma quickly responded to urgent needs, ensuring families had access to food, water, and resources. Her work has strengthened communities across Buncombe County.

Bradley’s leadership at Owen Middle School reflects the heart of the Community School Strategy. He centers students while supporting staff and building strong community partnerships. After Hurricane Helene, Bradley remained a steady presence, ensuring Owen stayed safe, supportive, and academically strong. He has expanded enrichment, tutoring, arts, and athletics while stewarding resources with care. His inclusive leadership makes Owen Middle a powerful example of a Community School in action.

Tanger Outlets is recognized for being a true community partner. Their team goes beyond financial support by using company volunteer hours to serve youth, respond to urgent needs, and support neighbors across Buncombe County. After the storm, they increased their involvement when it mattered most. 2025 Tocqueville Society Community Service Awardees
Dianne Worley is a native of Asheville and a proud alumna of the University of North Carolina at Asheville, where she earned her degree in Management in 1986. The first in her family to attend college, she has long understood the transformative power of higher education. Together with her husband, David Worley, she established an endowed scholarship at UNC Asheville in 2022 to help ensure that future students have access to the same lifechanging opportunities.
David and Dianne have been active members of the United Way Tocqueville Society for over 16 years, supporting a wide range of nonprofit initiatives even longer. Their philanthropy reflects not only generosity but also a deep commitment to the people and future of Asheville and Buncombe County.
David’s leadership extends beyond philanthropy into active service with community organizations. He currently serves as a Board Member of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, where he contributes to advancing health, education, and economic mobility across the region. His extensive civic and professional leadership includes roles with the Diana Wortham Theatre, Mission Health Systems, Rotary Club of Asheville, and the Asheville Chamber of Commerce. David helps champion causes ranging
from affordable housing to the arts, child and family care, and financial literacy.
The Worleys’ contributions embody the values of service, leadership, and philanthropy. Through sustained engagement with nonprofits, gifts of both time and resources, and a commitment to fostering community well-being, David and Dianne Worley have helped inspire a culture of giving.

THE POWER OF STATE AND NATIONAL NETWORKS (continued)
The NC Community School Coalition (NCCSC) launched in 2024 with a goal to improve the academic, mental, and physical health of North Carolina students by working with 55 schools across 18 school districts, with an emphasis on rural school communities that experience persistent poverty.

Because of the great efforts of The NCCSC, our state now has 42 community schools, including our nine community schools and 33 others that stretch across NC. We have shared our insights and lessons learned with our colleagues across the state. And, we have received tremendous support, financial and otherwise, from The NCCSC. There is strength in numbers, and we are proud and honored to be part of such a mutually supportive partnership.
We will keep you up to date on this statewide initiative and its impact in the years to come.

Strive Together supports place-based partnerships (such as United for Youth) that aim to move beyond an individual program’s approach toward a unified system focused on systemic community change. To do this, Strive Together provides a proven, researchbased roadmap to help communities move from initial planning to measurable results. Members receive intensive coaching and technical support to build their data capacity and improve local leadership skills. By joining the national collective, we gain access to a massive peer-learning lab that shares proven strategies and common pitfalls. This affiliation also increases local credibility, making it easier to attract major philanthropic investments.
