Bordered by two spectacular harbours, Auckland is a modern, cosmopolitan city and a thriving hub of activity. The region enjoys a warm, coastal climate without any extreme temperatures (although it’s always a good idea to pack a rain jacket and sunscreen).

While holding a student visa in New Zealand, you will be focused primarily on your studies, but you may also be allowed to work during certain holidays. It’s important to know your rights and responsibilities as a worker.

With stunning and diverse natural landscapes, Auckland’s central geographic location provides a great balance for those students looking for the best in study, job and lifestyle options. From world-class restaurants to casual BBQs in the park, sipping coffee at one of many cafes to hiking through the Waitākere Ranges, learning to surf at Piha beach or visiting an art gallery, you’ll never be short of things to do and see.

Working during and after your studies

Working on a student visa You may be able to work part-time up to 25 hours per week and full-time during semester breaks and holiday periods. Post-study work visa Once you’ve completed your studies, you may be able to apply for a post-study work visa. This allows you to stay in New Zealand to work for up to three years (depending on your qualifications).

Cost of living As with many other large international cities, the cost of living in Auckland depends on your living situation and proximity to campus. Some suburbs are less expensive but your travel expenses may be higher. Immigration NZ recommends you budget NZ$20,000 per year, plus your return airfare.

Our Campuses Mt Albert Campus | Te Whare Wānanga o Wairaka Green and spacious, our Mt Albert campus is where you’ll find our marae, Te Noho Kotahitanga. It’s where all our students start their study journey with us. Te Puna is the hub of student and staff life at Unitec. It’s where you’ll find all our student services - so you can easily access the study support you need. It’s also where our library facilities, food outlets and student counselling centre are located.

Then across campus, Te Puna Kararehe is home to creatures of all shapes and sizes. The Animal Behaviour and Husbandry Centre provides a safe and secure place for students to learn about the care, health and husbandry of a wide range of companion animal species.

Te Pūtahi, Building 108, is a recent multi-million dollar upgrade of Unitec’s facilities for the School of Architecture, Computing and Electrical Engineering, and Creative Industries. These include electrical engineering labs, hard materials workshop, ceramics labs, photography studio, film studios and gallery spaces.

For most schools, the new areas were an expansion of their current spaces, but for the School of Creative Industries, it is a new purpose-built, industry-standard facility that allows students to learn in a real-world environment. Building 108 represents a significant investment by Unitec in modern facilities to ensure that our commitment to real-world teaching and learning aligns with industry expectations. Next door is one of New Zealand’s largest open-plan trades training facilities, Mataaho. Designed to reflect a modern work site, Mataaho hosts students from all different disciplines who work and learn together using simulation and emulation tools – including the largest range of virtual reality, augmented reality and emulation equipment for trades training in the country.

Waitākere Campus | Te Whare Wānanga o Wairaka ki Waitākere Our West Auckland campus sits right in the heart of Henderson – and it’s where more than 1200 of our students call home. Our Waitākere campus is in the perfect location for students studying our health programmes because of its proximity to local health and community services – these services will play a huge role in your learning experience. Those students studying our nursing and medical imaging programmes will spend time at the Waitākere Hospital Āwhina Simulation Clinic, a sophisticated, high-tech clinical training facility. It provides key features of a fully operating hospital environment for students to learn, practise and observe.

Our welcoming Waitākere campus library is right across the road on level 3 accessed by a purpose built ‘air bridge’ from the main campus, giving you direct access to study resources like computers, library specialists and academic support. The Henderson public library is on level 1 and 2 of the same building providing access to Auckland council and community services. The campus also has a Student Central, where you’ll always find someone who can assist with programme enquiries and enrolments – it’s on the corner of Ratanui Street for easy community access.

Social practice students gain work placements and get work opportunities within our local community social services and NGOs (non governmental organisations).

Rainbow and Ally Network We want our students to know they are respected and valued whatever their gender identity or sexual orientation. The Rainbow and Ally Network is made up of a diverse group from the LGBTQI+ community, and allies, who work together towards building an inclusive and supportive learning environment for ākonga.

Gender-Neutral Bathroom Facilities We want every one of our students to feel at home on campus – including having access to everything you need to feel comfortable. Like our gender-neutral bathroom facilities. We have gender neutral toilets in 9 buildings at Mt Albert Campus, and 11 gender neutral toilets at Waitākere Campus.

Our Inter-Campus Shuttle Need to get from one campus to the other? Make use of our inter-campus shuttle which departs regularly from both campuses – and it’s free for all Unitec students.

Get connected with industry before you graduate We regularly host a mix of on-campus and online career and employability events including workshops, networking events and guest speakers, so you can get connected with potential employers. Connect Events (Career Fairs) These events help match students with employers who are on the hunt for work-ready graduates. They also provide a forum for students to interact with potential employers, acknowledging that industry input adds to the readiness of our students.

Recruitment presentations In your final period of study, you’ll be invited to attend these recruitment presentations. These are presentations by businesses actively recruiting graduates, interns, apprentices and part-time and full-time employees.

Student Connectors provide a helping hand Student Connectors is a student support network for international students. Students volunteer their time to help international students settle into life in Auckland (Tāmaki Makaurau) and study at Unitec. They connect students to our various support services on campus and are part of the official group that welcomes you to Unitec on International Welcome Day. With first-hand experience in adjusting to life at Unitec, Student Connectors can offer useful tips and advice to help you create a sense of belonging in your home away from home.

Pathway into higher-level academic study We have over 80 programmes to choose from, designed so you can start at the level that suits your experience and qualifications and make your way into higher-level programmes. They’re also internationally recognised, enabling you to shift into work in New Zealand and overseas. So, whether you’re looking to try something new, upskill or push your knowledge and skills to new heights, we can help you find the right starting point so you can continue your learning journey.

Student Support Services Your success is our success – that’s our approach to everything we do

The most important thing to us is ensuring that our students feel welcomed, well-supported and taken care of while studying with us. No matter what life throws your way or what help you need, the support and aroha to succeed will always be here. In our eyes, a holistic approach to your study journey is what enables success. You’ll always be able to find someone to help you, from academic support and career development to mental wellbeing, connection with other students, financial support and spirituality. Not only do we have a legal responsibility to support and look out for you, you’ve also paid for these services through your fees, so take advantage as much as you can during your studies to ensure you succeed.

International Student Support Our International Student Support Team can answer any questions, help you navigate your way around your studies and ease you into student life on campus. Ask them about anything - attendance, adapting to the NZ culture, academic integrity and time management. They work closely with all student support services across both campuses and can refer and connect you to the right people and services.

Learning and Achievement Our Learning Advisors provide free academic support and advice through workshops and one-to-one and group consultations. They cover a range of topics including academic reading and writing, referencing, maths and science support and time management. Services are available on both campuses- you can either book an appointment or pop in during drop-in hours.

Mental Wellbeing Te Puna Waiora is our counselling centre for both our domestic and international students. It has everything to support your mental and emotional wellbeing with free counselling services available to all students. Volunteer Chaplains (Multifaith Chaplaincy Service) are on-hand to support students of all faiths, including those of no particular faith, and provide an inclusive and holistic approach to spirituality.

Disability Support Services The Access4Success team works to support students across Unitec with long-term, short-term, and temporary impairments. If you have a physical, learning or sensory impairment, neurodiversity, mental distress or temporary injury, Access4Success offers resources and support like notetaking, assist technology, alternative exam arrangements and temporary parking permits.

Subject Librarians Our Subject Librarians can help you with finding subject information for your assignments. They’re professionally qualified librarians, focusing on information literacy teaching, resource acquisition and research support.

Career Development Our Career Development Team offers career advice and is free for all prospective and current Unitec students as well as alumni. The career consultants not only help with getting your CV ready but will also maximise your employability and industry connections. Come and talk to the team if you need a hand planning the next step in your study journey or career.

Manaaki Scholarships

Guliano Bryce

Anna Naphalay Sayyavong

When Guliano Bryce returned to Samoa after completing his studies at Unitec through the Manaaki Scholarship programme, he brought back more than a qualification — he returned with new skills, confidence and a renewed commitment to vocational education.

More than five years on from her Manaaki scholarship, Anna Naphalay Sayyavong is still blown away by the experience.

A lecturer in Construction and Joinery at the National University of Samoa since 2015, Guliano completed his studies at Unitec in 2023 while balancing personal challenges and academic commitments.

Laotian-born Anna received the scholarship in 2019, joined a pre-departure English improvement programme, then moved to New Zealand to start her degree. In 2021, she graduated from a Masters of Business with prestigious first-class honours.

Originally from the villages of Siumu, Tufuiopa and Manono, he now applies the construction management knowledge gained in Aotearoa New Zealand to strengthen training programmes and support apprentices in Samoa. Guliano says Unitec’s hands-on learning environment, supportive lecturers and strong student services helped him succeed.

“The support I received at Unitec was life-shaping. It gave me confidence, broadened my perspective and strengthened my ability to contribute to my community.”

Orientation

Held at the beginning of each semester, orientation is designed to welcome you onto campus and help you prepare to study with us. It’s about so much more than just learning to find your way around campus – it involves a range of activities focused on connecting you to our campuses, other students and lecturers, and introducing you to your programme of study.

You’ll be officially welcomed with a pōwhiri (Māori welcoming ceremony) and campus tour which will start at our beautiful Te Noho Kotahitanga Marae. There’s no better way to welcome new students than through the doors of our wharenui (meeting house) Ngākau Māhaki.

International Welcome Day This will be your introduction to life in Aotearoa (New Zealand), where you’ll learn more about Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) and get the information that will help you settle into your studies.

O-Week The First week of semester is filled with a number of free events and activities for students. It’s a great way to connect with your classmates and enjoy the social side of student life at Unitec. And throughout the year, we host cultural events on campus with food, music, activities, seminars and workshops, so our students can celebrate their heritage and uniqueness.

It’s a great way to connect with your classmates, find your way around campus and make sure you have everything you need to hit the ground running.

Offer to study at Unitec

You or your agent will need to create an online account with Unitec and fill out an application form.

You’ll need to complete some application tasks. This could be providing your CV, statement of purpose or relevant portfolio, as well as certified ID documents (passport or birth certificate), and academic records.

Our team will assess your application and if all goes well, you’ll receive an offer of study.

Finish off remaining tasks

Pay your tuition fees

If your offer is conditional, you may be required to complete additional tasks before you can be admitted to your programme of choice. Complete these as quickly as possible so we can make your offer unconditional (which you’ll need for your student visa application).

Once you have received an unconditional offer, you can pay your fees and complete your enrolment. In some cases, tuition fees should be paid after obtaining an Approval in Principle (AIP) for your student visa.

Student Visa and Insurance Medical and travel insurance is essential

All international students studying at Unitec for longer than two weeks are required to have Unitec-approved medical and travel insurance. The insurance needs to cover your complete enrolment period until the expiry date of your student visa and also needs to include your travel to and from New Zealand, starting on or before the day you depart your home country and finishing on or after the expiry date of your student visa.

Unitec-arranged insurance Unitec automatically places insurance cover for enrolled International students with Unitec’s appointed provider, Uni-Care.

Self-arranged insurance You can arrange your own insurance with an alternative provider which must be approved by the Unitec Insurance Team. The period of cover should start from the day you intend to travel to New Zealand and finish on or after the student visa expiry date. Please email the Insurance Certificate, a copy of your air ticket as well as a copy of your visa to the Insurance Team at Unitec before the first day of the month that your programme begins. The team will then review if the insurance complies with the Code of Practice for Pastoral Care. If insurance is not provided by this date, Unitec will arrange insurance for you.

Medical support All international students must have medical insurance while they are in New Zealand. Costs for doctor or medical appointments are often covered by insurance and if you are hurt in an accident while studying in New Zealand, ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) will pay for some of the medical treatment costs and can help support you in other ways too. To find out how ACC can support you if you have an injury, visit acc.co.nz.

Your visa requirements As an international student, you must have a student visa to lawfully study full-time and live in New Zealand. It’s important to apply for your visa as soon as you have all the required documentation, as the application process can take some time. For detailed criteria and evidence required to apply for a visa, visit immigration.govt.nz/. To attend classes at Unitec, you will need a valid student visa. Immigration New Zealand requires Unitec to comply with these rules and report students who fail to provide valid documentation.

Accommodation Finding a place to live while you study

There are a variety of accommodation options available, such as renting a room in a flat or living with a homestay. Flatting

You’ll want to organise your accommodation before you arrive in New Zealand. That way, when you land, you can get straight into student life and exploring Auckland

Flatting is renting a room in a shared house Your room is private, but the lounge, kitchen and bathroom are shared. You and your flatmates are responsible for cooking, cleaning and paying the bills.

Here are some things you might want to consider:

Types of accommodation Flatting is a great option if you prefer a more independent lifestyle, otherwise a homestay will give you that family vibe. Think about your study habits too, and choose an accommodation option that will support your success. Homestay families For most international students, living with a local family is a great way to settle into a new country. Unitec has partnered with Host Families NZ for homestay services, so students can experience living a New Zealand lifestyle. Here are the costs of arranging a homestay (all fees are GST inclusive and subject to change): •

Placement fee: $300

Weekly homestay charge: $360-$450 per week

Campus Waterview Located at the edge of Unitec’s Mt Albert campus, Campus Waterview offers shared 3, 4 and 5 bedroom fully-furnished student apartments. The accommodation is exclusively for students who are enrolled in tertiary education providers. The apartments are monitored 24 hours a day with an experienced residential manager who lives on-site, to ensure a safe and secure environment for students. They’re supported by a Residential Assistant (RA) student team who also live in the Village and can help with any queries you might have during your stay. Other features include: •

The Code of Practice We have an important responsibility to ensure that all international students who choose to study at Unitec are well-informed, safe and properly cared for – and we take this responsibility seriously. Unitec is bound by The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021, as set out by the New Zealand Ministry of Education. The Code of Practice lays out minimum standards of advice and care that you can expect from us while you’re studying in New Zealand.

Where to get help If you have any concerns about your experience at Unitec, the Code provides a procedure to follow for confidential advice or to lay a complaint. The first step is to talk to an International Student Advisor and file an informal complaint if needed. Then, if your complaint isn’t or can’t be resolved, you can liaise with one of the following agencies: 1.

NZQA handles all complaints about alleged non-compliance with the Code of Practice, except for financial and contractual disputes. Information on making a complaint about a provider’s compliance with the Code of Practice can be found on NZQA’s website.

Study Complaints | Ngā Amuamu Tauira is the appointed operator of the International Student Contract Dispute Resolution Scheme (DRS), set up to resolve financial and contractual disputes.

Code signatories are required to comply with the International Student Contract Dispute Resolution Scheme Rules 2016.

Support for under-18s What to expect as an international student under the age of 18

From the moment you receive your unconditional offer, you are part of our Unitec whānau, and we will help you find your way and achieve study success. We’re here to help

Living with an approved homestay family

Under the Code of Practice, which sets out the standard of care that you can expect as an international student under the age of 18, if you have any difficulties with your accommodation, academic performance, general health and wellbeing or any other concerns, we’re here to help you find the right support services.

An applicant’s parent(s) may want to arrange a homestay family in New Zealand. Unitec uses Host Families NZ to help with student placements, police checks and home inspections. Please let us know if you would like to apply for a homestay and we will assist you through the process.

International Welcome Day

Accommodation Requirements The Code of Practice also requires that students under 18 years of age live in one of the following accommodation arrangements: Living with a parent The applicant’s parent(s) must confirm they will be residing in Auckland with the applicant until the applicant is at least 18 years old. We may make arrangements to view the property and meet with your parent(s). Parent(s) must complete the Parents Confirmation Form and email back to us. Living with a designated caregiver A designated caregiver must be a relative or close family friend.

From the Netherlands to NZ

David Calder-Flynn Outbound Exchange Student- Architecture

Architecture major David Calder-Flynn spent most of his degree biking and walking around some of the most stunning architecture in the world. The Auckland-born Unitec student did an exchange at Arnhem in the Netherlands – and the experience was transformational.

For Renée Cox, a semester in New Zealand was a chance to spread her wings. Independent from a young age, she jumped at the opportunity to move halfway across the world from her home country of the Netherlands.

“There is some of the best architecture, arguably, in the world or in Europe and you get to look around it just for class, with teachers who know about the history,” he explains. David saw the programme as a chance not just to build his knowledge but also to experience a new culture, make friends, and travel around Europe.

“It was quite hard to just move to Europe,” he explains. “Because I had a place to study and I could focus on something, it made the whole thing easier.”

“When I got the opportunity to study abroad, I decided I wanted to go as far away as possible,” she explains. “I knew that New Zealand was a beautiful country, and the culture wasn’t too different from my own.” Renée was studying International Communications at HAN University of Applied Sciences when she signed up for the International Exchange programme with Unitec. She applied, chose papers that matched her interests and degree, and then made her big move.

The experience radically altered his perspective on architecture and city planning, which has changed the way he moves forward in his career – whether in New Zealand or in Europe.

While moving away from friends and family had its challenges, the experience has been overwhelmingly positive for Renée. She felt supported in her studies at Unitec and found time to get out in nature with newfound friends – Kiwis and other exchange students.

“Being able to live in a transport hub in the heart of Central Europe completely changed my view on how we should build and live in cities. No car dependency or traffic jams and designing cities with incredible cycling infrastructure means that there’s almost no need to drive a car,” he explains.

“They both add a different kind of value to your life,” she says. “Kiwis can show you what life is like for them, and they’re usually very interested in where you come from. Other exchange students understand the struggles that come with moving abroad.”

The way the Dutch address architecture challenges has also been inspirational. “Dutch architecture and planning is heavily influenced by water, flood plains and dykes, and the architectural solutions to these are as innovative as how we address earthquakes and flooding here,” he says.

Now back in the Netherlands, Renée is enthusiastic about the value of her time in New Zealand – and keen to recommend the programme to anyone considering applying.

It was a life-changing experience for David, and he believes others should make the leap.

“It was a huge opportunity – I can’t recommend it enough.”

“Do it!” she says. “It’s an amazing opportunity to discover what life can be like in a different country and culture. It helps you figure out where your strengths and weaknesses lie, and it helps you make yourself happy rather than relying on others.”

Yay! You’ve landed What to do once you’ve arrived Getting around Auckland First, you’ll need to find your way from Auckland Airport to Unitec or your pre-arranged accommodation. Auckland’s public transport is easy to navigate, or you can organise a shuttle or Uber. We would highly recommend getting an AT HOP card as soon as you can. AT HOP cards work on trains, buses and ferries, and make fares at least 25% cheaper than paying by cash or card.

Setting up a bank account To manage your money in New Zealand, it’s recommended that you open an account with any of the local banks. Most of them have low-cost packages for students – just be sure to take your passport, current visa, Confirmation of Enrolment Letter, Inland Revenue Department (IRD) number, and proof of address

Find exchange rates To learn more about the rate between your home country and New Zealand, you’ll want to use a foreign exchange calculator.

Some more useful tips: •

Print out your visa docs for when you pass through Customs.

•

Pack the right clothing. Remember, the Southern Hemisphere has opposite seasons to the North.

•

Buy a SIM card at the airport. Do this on your way out, so you can start using your phone the moment you land.

Unitec master’s student awarded for innovative decomposable theatre design A boundary-pushing design for an Avondale theatre won Abigail Spence a 2023 TEAM Architects Scholarships Distinction award. The Unitec Master’s student’s ‘Te Whau Community Arts and Cultural Centre’ concept includes a 250-seat theatre, rehearsal and staff spaces, and café. It was crafted to answer a brief for a sustainable building for Avondale’s local creative community. Abigail’s design aims to go beyond sustainable to regenerative, envisioning a building that leaves the environment better off with underutilised materials, including bamboo, earth and wheat straw. Even the concrete foundations are designed to be reusable.

Abigail’s choice of straw comes from her exploration of neglected construction resources in Project Pātūtū, led by Unitec Architecture lecturer Min Hall. Abigail pushed Min’s concept to the extreme, exploring the acoustic properties of straw in a single large structure.

She explains, “I’ve designed it so the entire building would decompose.”

The project was a collaborative learning experience, with TEAM Architects’ input enhancing the design process.

Exploring underutilised materials

“I experimented with many details for this project, and the TEAM staff questioned me on certain aspects, which was great. It was a learning experience for everyone,” says Abigail.

The design reflects the diverse Avondale community, drawing inspiration from large, thatched structures of the Pacific, India and Asia. The curving theatre roof features a bamboo shell thatched with wheat straw – a food by-product usually burnt off or discarded. Adjacent bamboo groves provide new columns as needed. The sloping roof guides rainwater runoff to a grassed filtration channel before it joins greywater. A substantial rammed-earth wall helps regulate the building’s internal temperature, while prefabricated straw-bale panels form the remaining walls.

Glen Frost, awards judge and TEAM Architects director, praised Abigail’s design for offering “a much-needed heart for Avondale,” reflecting and serving its community well while leaving a minimal environmental footprint.

Raising awareness around regenerative design Abigail hopes her work will inspire other students to push the limits of regenerative materials in theoretical projects. As her career progresses, she looks forward to exploring underused materials, regenerative design and Te Tiriti principles.

From Colombo to Southland: Sri Lankan migrant secures NZ lecturing role before graduation When Dhanushka Abeysekara arrived in New Zealand from Sri Lanka in 2024, he brought with him a wealth of experience, a passion for learning, and a dream he had held since childhood — to become a lecturer. Just two years later, he achieved that goal before even graduating. Dhanushka graduated with a Master of Professional Accounting (First Class Honours) from Unitec in 2026. Before crossing the graduation stage, he had already secured a role as an Accounting Lecturer at the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) in Invercargill. Originally from Colombo, Dhanushka spent 18 years working in higher education, teaching across information technology, accounting, finance and taxation. Despite already holding an MBA and professional qualifications, he chose to return to study to expand his knowledge and gain international experience.

“I chose Unitec because of its strong academic reputation and practical approach to learning,” he says. Like many students, Dhanushka faced challenges adjusting to a new country, culture and education system while balancing family life with study. Building fairer AI - turning computing skills into real-world impact Manochitra Loganathan’s journey from Indian migrant to being recruited by Land Information New Zealand as their Data Platform Lead shows how advanced computing skills can be applied to real-world challenges that matter.

Working with real-world datasets, including census, housing, ACC and IRD data, she developed a framework to identify and reduce bias, with a focus on improving fairness for Māori and other underrepresented communities.

She completed her Master of Applied Technologies at Unitec, gaining the technical expertise and industry-connected experience needed to contribute to Aotearoa New Zealand’s growing data and AI sector, while balancing postgraduate study with family life as a mother of a young child.

“My goal is to ensure AI systems are fair, transparent and inclusive,” she says. “Data is not just numbers — behind every dataset are real people, real stories, and real lives.”

Arriving from Tamil Nadu in 2024 with over a decade of industry experience, Loganathan chose Unitec for a very practical reason — flexibility.

“What drew me to Unitec was the flexibility,” she says. “It allowed me to continue learning while balancing my family and studies.” That support enabled her to balance postgraduate study with parenting a young child, while advancing her expertise in artificial intelligence and data science. Her research focused on one of the most critical issues in modern computing: bias in AI systems.

Her work earned national recognition in 2025, placing third in the Falling Walls Lab Aotearoa finals hosted by the Royal Society Te Apārangi, highlighting the strength and relevance of postgraduate computing research at Unitec. Professor Hamid Sharifzadeh says her work demonstrates the real-world impact of Unitec’s approach to computing education.

“Her achievement demonstrates how Unitec’s postgraduate research addresses real-world challenges with societal impact,” he says. Loganathan’s journey reflects the strength of Unitec’s computing programmes — combining technical expertise, applied learning and industry connection with strong academic mentoring and support. Building a Brighter Future From Refugee Camp to Construction Career Banu Ali’s journey to the construction industry began in a refugee camp in Indonesia.

Although she entered the programme with no prior knowledge of quantity surveying, Ali embraced the challenge.

She’s now helping deliver major building projects in Australia as an Estimating Coordinator for Newpol Construction in Melbourne after graduating in 2025 with a Bachelor of Construction (Quantity Surveying) from Unitec.

“I remember thinking, ‘What am I doing here?’ I thought I was going to fail.”

For Ali, construction is about more than buildings.

“The best part of working is applying everything I learned at Unitec in a real job,” she says. “I feel so supported at the company I am working for.” Originally from Pakistan, Ali’s early life was marked by loss and displacement. After fleeing sectarian violence, she spent a year in a refugee camp before being resettled in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2018 with her young son.

“When I arrived in New Zealand, I was living in Flat Bush with no income and very little English,” she says. With limited qualifications, Ali turned to education to create new opportunities. She first enrolled in English language studies before attending a Unitec Open Day that changed her future.

“I was exploring my options when I stopped at the construction stand,” she says. “They asked me if I was good with drawings. I said I’m good with numbers and money. That’s when they encouraged me to apply.”

Balancing study with family responsibilities, including raising a son with autism, was not easy. With support from Unitec lecturers, student services, scholarships and industry internships, she steadily built her confidence and skills. Unitec enrolment specialist Anand Sajwan says her determination stood out from the start.

“She didn’t meet the usual entry requirements, but her grit and motivation were clear. We supported her through Special Admission because she showed real potential to succeed.” Associate Professor Linda Kestle says Ali’s achievement reflects her resilience and commitment to learning. After beginning her career as a Junior Estimator in Auckland, Ali is now contributing to major projects in Melbourne and hopes to establish her own construction company.

“There are not many women in construction, especially where I come from,” she says. “I want to show other women that there is a place for them in this industry.” “Be brave and courageous. With hard work and a willingness to learn, nothing is impossible.”

Making the most of a life-changing opportunity Jeron Gwaite’e, the first in his family to pursue tertiary education, attributes his success in obtaining a Civil Engineering degree from Unitec to the Manaaki scholarship programme. The programme supports students from developing countries, like Jeron’s Solomon Islands home. “It was a life-changing experience and an answer to my prayers,” he explains. The scholarship and support from Unitec staff and community groups helped him achieve his education goals and land his first engineering role.

“The Manaaki scholarship not only helped with my studies but also helped me get my first job,” Jeron explains.

From hometown achievement to international opportunity For high achieving students in the Solomon Islands, a Manaaki scholarship is a pathway to educational opportunities in New Zealand. Being a successful applicant boosted Jeron’s self-confidence and motivated him to excel in his studies when he arrived at Unitec. After completing his Bachelor of Engineering Technology degree, the credibility of the scholarship played a crucial role in landing Jeron a sought-after graduate construction engineer role with the NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). The Honiara-based role called for a Manaaki graduate. It involves assisting with delivering MFAT’s infrastructure programme in the Solomons, including airfield upgrades in remote areas.

Beaches, BBQs, badminton & bouldering – living the dream in New Zealand Thirty-seven-year-old Liming Wang arrived in New Zealand in September 2022, just as the country’s borders were re-opening after the global COVID-19 pandemic. It was a challenging time, but he was driven by a desire to find a better work-life balance after 12 years working in the busy city of Sichuanin southwest China. As an international student coming to New Zealand for the first time, he wanted to live somewhere where he could enjoy a change of pace and focus more on lifestyle, especially the outdoors.

“I remember one teacher showed us a photo of New Zealanders relaxing at a beach after work, and said New Zealand has ranked the world’s best for work-life balance in recent years – and we all aspired to be like that!”

The former fire engineer, who once hardly had time for anything outside of work, now loves beaches, BBQs, badminton and bouldering – and says he’s living the dream, balancing his study commitments around his new-found interests.

Liming credits Unitec’s support network and pathway programmes for helping him overcome his initial language barriers, adapt to a new culture and progress academically into further study.

Liming first completed a three-month English Language course at Unitec which proved to be a valuable foundation – although he had learnt English in his native China, he realised he only had a very basic grasp of vocabulary and grammar, lacking face-to-face communication.

He’s now in his final year of Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil). He has served as an ASC Facilitator (Ākonga Skills Connectors), and has been working as a PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) leader, helping other students in his spare time.

The Level 4 pathway course also gave him great insight into Kiwi life, encouraged by Unitec’s teaching staff.

“Unitec is amazing as the lecturers come from all over the world, with lots of different perspectives and characteristics,” he says. “I learnt about their different backgrounds and how this authenticity can help us in our appreciation of New Zealand culture.

Making a difference in his community Andrew Arona moved to Aotearoa New Zealand from Samoa with his fanau in 2009 - and has graduated from Unitec with a Bachelor of Nursing. Andrew attributes his passion for nursing to his Christian values; he and other members of his church regularly donate food to the homeless, and this work got him thinking about how else he could serve his community. Andrew initially studied Unitec’s Certificate in University Preparation before moving into the degree programme on a scholarship.

“It was awesome that Unitec has services like Te Puna Ako and the Pacific Centre, which are dedicated to supporting Māori and Pacific students.” For Andrew, one of the highlights of the programme was the interactions with his lecturers – “they were so approachable!”

He also found that cultural awareness was a massive part of the programme, and is instrumental in helping students understand different cultural needs and values. Andrew and his cousin Taulaga (who also lectures at Unitec) run presentations at their local church on healthcare issues that are most relevant to the congregation: diabetes, gout and strokes. They also measure blood pressure, glucose (sugar) levels, weight, and check for other medical conditions.

“Respect is a massive part of Samoan culture, so it was hard, going in as someone young to tell these elders what to do.” However, Andrew has found that having Unitec’s degree has made a big difference in his interactions, and he’s committed to growing preventative healthcare in his community.
