Apply online for an eligible course or programme.
2.
Fill in the Expression of Interest form on the Unitec website for Youth Guarantee Fund.
3.

Te Tahua Akoranga Scholarships At Unitec we manaaki student success wherever we can and scholarships are one of the ways we do that. Scholarships We have scholarships that recognise the achievements and the challenges of dedicating yourself to learning, whether that’s in a vocational trade, at undergraduate level or at Master’s degree level and beyond. We understand that financial barriers can be significant for students. That’s why most scholarship funding helps support students with costs associated with study. That could be tuition fees or course-related costs like books and supplies, as well as living expenses such as childcare and transport.
Applying for a scholarship We offer scholarships designed specifically to help reduce the pressure, so you can focus on achieving your academic goals.
Manaaki New Zealand Scholar Ratu Epeneri Korovakaturaga, Master of Architecture, Fiji
We offer a variety of scholarships to students and highly recommend looking at our website for current scholarships.
Help while you study – financial assistance
Here are some of the scholarships we have offered in the past:
Sometimes unexpected and additional costs can pop up. If you find yourself struggling financially during your studies, Unitec has Study Grants for essential course-related costs (up to $500) that domestic, full-time students can apply for. There’s also an emergency hardship fund that can provide some limited financial help. Our Student Support team can help put you in touch with other support services that can help to get you back on your feet.

Māori & Pacific Scholarships Scholarships for new students, those progressing into a new programme and academic excellence scholarships in undergraduate degrees. New Student & School Leaver Scholarships Scholarships for students who have recently left high school or people seeking a career change, as well as our disabled and neurodiverse learners, to further support and enhance the student experience.

Pacific Academic Excellence Scholarship Recipient
Ana Nadumu
Bachelor of Social Practice
“I feel blessed and thankful for the support provided, the availability of my lecturers, the resources, learning advisors and library assistance which have been a huge help in my journey. And the assistance provided by my Unitec whānau motivates me to stay focused on my studies and work towards my goal of graduating.” “I struggled in my first year of studies, especially during the first semester. It was overwhelming, returning to study after 20 years, especially in a totally different country and environment. I was already used to juggling work, home and family life but with the addition of studies, I started to feel stressed. Receiving a scholarship has really helped take the pressure off, and allowed me to focus on getting good grades.” “The scholarship team has been incredibly helpful, guiding me through the application process and convincing me that I could do it. I’d say to anyone considering a scholarship, if you fit the criteria, then apply!”
Whai Ake ISuccess Te Ara Tika Māori Mentoring Pacific Scholarship - Unitec School Leavers Scholarship – Scholarship Recipient Te Pou Hiranga Academic Excellence Scholarship
Aivi Fifita
Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Business (HR Management)
“Receiving the Pacific Success scholarship has been such a blessing to me. It has reminded me that I’m not alone in my journey and has connected me with other Pasifika learners – it really feels like I’m coming from home to home when I spend time at the Pacific Centre at Unitec.” “It has also helped me balance my family and study life – I really feel that I can support my husband and daughter despite the fact that I’m studying. I’m so grateful for this opportunity, and to my Pasifika whānau at Unitec for encouraging me to apply. “The assistance that scholarships offer really strengthens our Pacific network, and I hope that my success might encourage other Pasifika women to do the same, particularly those held back by family commitments or financial hardship. “Remember - it’s never too late to invest in yourself.”
Whai Ake Māori Scholarship Recipient
Theresa Murray
Bachelor of Social Practice
“I started my Social Practices degree because I wanted to change the cycle – I was raised in care and none of my family had ever done any tertiary study before.” “Whai Ake has helped me in more ways than you can imagine. The financial assistance has been huge, but also the friendships and connections it’s helped me make – not just with other students, but with kaihautū as well. We get so much support from kaimahi, especially those at Waitākere – my whānau is their whānau, and we’re always encouraged to bring our kids along to everything – they’re part of our journey. “Whai Ake has also helped me become more grounded in my culture. Whaea Lynda, Whaea Jonyne, Whaea Marama and Papa Ho – they’ve all helped me learn my identity as a Māori student. “Don’t be whakama (scared), I say – make the most of the help that’s available. You don’t know until you know.”

Bridging Education course gives award-winning students a great headstart Two engineering graduates who were recent finalists in one of the region’s most prestigious engineering awards, say they owe their success to the Bridging Education course they did at Unitec. Recent civil engineering graduate, Rayyan Hassan and electrical engineering student Emmanuel Simon – both former Student Councillors – started their journeys at Unitec with a Foundation and Bridging Education course specialising in Engineering. They were both highly commended in the Student Engineer Leadership Award at the recent Engineering New Zealand 2026 Auckland Awards, recognising exceptional leadership, collaboration and impact within the engineering community. Rayyan attributes much of his success to the six-month Unitec Foundation course he did in 2022 which he says gave him the confidence to return to study after taking a break, and to really find his passion.
“The course helped me get back into my studies after a long break,” says Rayyan. “It also helped me understand some of the basics of Engineering that later helped me in my diploma and bachelor’s degree. I was able to use many of the concepts that my teachers taught me back then.” Emmanuel is a Manaaki New Zealand scholar from Papua New Guinea and is completing a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Electrical) this year. He has balanced study, family responsibilities and part-time work while previously serving as Unitec’s Student Vice President and is a prominent advocate for Pacific and international students on campus.
“The Bridging Education programme played a significant role in my academic journey,” he says. “Coming from Papua New Guinea and transitioning into the New Zealand education system, the programme helped me develop the academic skills, confidence, and study habits needed for tertiary education. “It provided a strong foundation in mathematics, communication, critical thinking, and independent learning.
To read more inspirational stories, visit unitec.ac.nz/latest-news
More importantly, it helped me understand how to navigate university life, manage workloads, and adapt to a new learning environment. “The skills and confidence I gained through the Foundation programme were instrumental in preparing me for Engineering, which is a demanding field of study. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I made because it gave me a pathway to succeed and ultimately progress into the bachelor’s programme.” Originally from Pakistan, Rayyan moved to Auckland with his family and quickly became a central figure in student life—serving as Class Representative, Student Council President (in 2025), and founder of the Engineering, Surveying and Construction Club. He specialised in civil engineering and is now working in a graduate role with KiwiRail. Over his two-year programme, he will gain experience across a range of areas, including project management, environmental, water and tracks engineering. Both Rayyan and Emmanuel say being a named finalist in the regional engineering awards was both humbling and deeply meaningful.
Emmanuel says, “For me, it serves as a reminder that leadership is about service, creating opportunities for others, and contributing positively to the community around us. “It has motivated me to continue striving for excellence in both engineering and leadership while inspiring other Pacific and international students to pursue their goals with confidence.” Emmanuel currently represents all electrical engineering students on the Programme Academic Quality Committee (PAQC) board at Unitec. His long-term goal is to contribute to the development of the energy and power sector in Papua New Guinea, particularly in power systems, renewable energy, and sustainable infrastructure.

Becoming the support they once needed Graduates of Unitec Certificate in Health and Wellbeing share their journeys. The number of New Zealanders accessing mental health and addiction services is on the rise; it’s a sector under pressure. Unitec graduates Jessica Apanui and Carly Laughton have experienced this firsthand. Now, they’re using their certificates in Health and Wellbeing – Mental Health and Addiction Support to give back. Here, they share their stories. Carly’s journey (Pictured Left)
Jessica’s story (Pictured Right)
Using was always Carly’s solution for “getting outside” of herself. What started with food escalated to methamphetamine, but it was opiates that brought her to her knees.
Substances gave Jess an escape from a traumatic childhood and feelings of disconnect from her whakapapa. She started using at just twelve, and it wasn’t long before a methamphetamine addiction took hold. Jess resigned herself to the fact that she was “always going to be a gutter junkie.”
At age fifteen, Carly was placed in a home for youth with chronic mental illness, and in her teenage years, she tried hard to get help. But to get into rehab, she needed to be clean.
“If I knew how to stop using for a couple of weeks, then I’m not sure I would need to come to treatment,” she reflects. In desperation, Carly turned herself in for a crime “because it was the only way I could get access to treatment.” After getting clean, she enrolled in Unitec’s Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Mental Health and Addiction Support.
“I always had the motivation. The presence of one non-parental caring adult can change a person’s life – I’ve experienced that,” Carly says. These days, as a Youth CEP Clinician, Carly is also working towards a Master’s in health science and advocates for systemic change.
“My qualification isn’t my trauma anymore,” says Carly proudly.

Police intervention was a turning point, and when she entered rehab, she knew she had to break the cycle for her tamariki. There, she reconnected with Te Ao Māori and felt a strong drive to help others do the same. Once clean, Jess turned to Unitec’s Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Mental Health and Addiction Support to equip herself with the skills to support her experience. She now heads Mana over Meth Kura Kaupapa – a programme run in schools to support rangatahi living with addiction, abuse and suicide. She is also the Principal Advisor – Lived Experience, Addictions for Te Whatu Ora.
