How to Apply Te Tuku Tono

Applying for a programme is super easy - just follow these five steps. Before applying, make sure you have your certified ID documents (passport or birth certificate) handy.

Decide on the right programme for you and click ‘Apply Now’

Search the programme you’re interested in studying on the Unitec website, unitec.ac.nz, and click Apply Now.

2

Complete your application

You’ll need to create an account with Unitec by entering your personal details and academic history into the system.

3

Complete your enrolment tasks

When you’ve finished your application, you’ll be transferred to an enrolment portal. Here you’ll need to complete some tasks such as uploading supporting documents to support your application.

4

Accept your ‘Offer of Study’

If all goes well you’ll receive an offer of study. You can accept this offer via your enrolment portal.

5

Finish off remaining tasks

If your offer is conditional, you may be required to complete additional tasks. Wrap these up as quickly as possible so we can finalise your place in the programme.

Funding Your Studies Te Tahua Akoranga

Studying is an investment in your future and a great way to ensure you remain work-ready in today’s ever-changing world. Here are some of the options for funding your studies:

Fees-Free

Fees Free supports eligible learners by covering the final year of their first qualification, helping to ease financial barriers to completion. When enrolling in tertiary education, it’s important to plan for the payment of your fees. You may choose to apply for a student loan through StudyLink or explore other financial support options. Unitec may ask for your IRD number, which helps link your qualification completion to your entitlement claim.

From 2026, you will be able to confirm your eligibility and claim your Fees Free after finishing your qualification through myIR on Inland Revenue’s website. You will have 12 months to claim your entitlement once you complete your qualification or programme.

Checking your eligibility

To check whether you’re eligible for fees-free study, follow these steps:

1. Go to feesfree.govt.nz and enter your National Student Number (NSN). If you don’t have this handy, there are additional instructions on the website.

2. Make sure you choose the eligibility criteria for provider-based study.

3. Then, you’ll receive one of the following results: Yes – you’re eligible for fees-free No – you’re not eligible for fees-free

Maybe – not sure if you’re eligible for fees-free

4. Once you’re eligible with TEC, you can apply to study at Unitec. If you get a maybe, you’ll need to submit a statutory declaration form at feesfree.govt.nz as soon as possible, so there are no disruptions to your studies.

Youth Guarantee Scheme

If you’re between the ages of 16 and 24, a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident and enrolled in an eligible 6 or 12-month Level 3 programme, you might be able to apply for funding under the Youth Guarantee Scheme to cover your compulsory tuition fees.

Here’s how it works:

1. Apply online for an eligible course or programme.

2. If your application is successful, you’ll have an interview with the Youth Guarantee team to talk about funding.

3. Youth Guarantee-funded places of study are limited, so apply as early as possible.

Student Loans and Allowances

StudyLink is the best place to start when looking for help to pay for your study. What you’re eligible to apply for depends on your residency status, age, income and course type.

StudyLink may be able to help with:

• Compulsory tuition fees

• Course-related costs

• Living costs

• Other costs (e.g. disability or childcare)

Student Loan

A student loan can help with paying for your tuition fees (compulsory fees charged by us), study materials (e.g. books, computer, travel) and living costs. Because this is a loan, you’ll have to pay it back once you start working.

Note: if you’re eligible for fees-free study, you might not need a loan for your tuition fees but you may still need one for course-related and living costs.

Student Allowance

A student allowance is a weekly payment to help you with your living expenses while you’re studying. If you’re eligible, you don’t have to pay this one back.

Getting your application ready

The application process for a student loan and/or allowance can be quite complicated, so we do have drop-in sessions available at the beginning of each semester where our Student Support Advisors can help you with your application. These advisors are also available throughout the year to assist.

Scholarships

We have scholarships that recognise the achievements and the challenges of dedicating yourself to learning, whether that’s in a vocational trade, at undergraduate level or at Master’s degree level and beyond.

We understand that financial barriers can be significant for students. That’s why most scholarship funding helps support students with costs associated with study. That could be tuition fees or course-related costs like books and supplies, as well as living expenses such as childcare and transport.

Applying for a scholarship

We offer scholarships designed specifically to help reduce the pressure, so you can focus on achieving your academic goals.

We offer a variety of scholarships to students and highly recommend looking at our website for current scholarships.

Here are some of the scholarships we have offered in the past:

• Māori & Pacific Scholarships

Scholarships for new students, those progressing into a new programme and academic excellence scholarships in undergraduate degrees. Some of these scholarships also provided mentoring opportunities and other ways to connect with Unitec’s Māori and Pacific communities. We also offer Kura Kaupapa / Rūmaki Reo scholarships.

New Student & School Leaver Scholarships

Scholarships for students who have recently left high school or people seeking a career change, as well as our disabled and neurodiverse learners, to further support and enhance the student experience.

Help while you study – financial assistance

Sometimes unexpected and additional costs can pop up. If you find yourself struggling financially during your studies, Unitec has Study Grants for essential course-related costs (up to $500) that domestic, full-time students can apply for. There’s also an emergency hardship fund that can provide some financial help, a small one-off payment to help you cover the cost of unforeseen, essential expenses. Our Student Support team can help put you in touch with other support services that can help to get you back on your feet.

16-week full-time programme: speed your way into the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil, Electrical or Electronic)* or the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil or Electrical). *Cross-credits into these programmes: this means you’ll need to gain fewer credits to gain the higher qualification.

Gain the fundamental physics, algebra, literacy and engineering knowledge for entry into higher-level engineering programmes.

• Tailored for Unitec’s engineering degree and diploma programmes meaning it’ll prepare you for the programme that you want to enter.

As a student in this programme, you’ll be part of an engineering student body - learning alongside other aspiring engineers.

Programme overview

This programme is ideal for you if you want to go on to Unitec’s New Zealand Diploma in Engineering or the Bachelor of Engineering Technology – but don’t quite meet the admission requirements.

Admission requirements

For this programme you’ll need:

Academic

1. To be 16 years old at the time the programme starts

2. A minimum total of 48 NCEA credits at level 2 in four subjects, including:

• 12 credits in Mathematics (preferably achievement standards in algebra, calculus or trigonometry)

12 English credits at level 1 or higher

3. 10 credits at NCEA level 1 or above in English

English

Applicants will need one or more of the following:

• 12 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above in English

New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 (Applied)

• Provide evidence that you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency, such as IELTS

If you don’t meet the English criteria above, we have a range of English Language programmes available.

Other options

“It’s never too late to learn” – turning your passion into a profession

Samoan born and raised Lite Elisara graduated from Unitec with a Bachelor of Applied Technology - Automotive Engineering in 2015 with his three years of study funded by New Zealand & AUSAid scholarships. The former International student returned home after his studies and is now a lecturer in automotive engineering at the National University of Samoa (NUS).

Forty-one-year-old Lite says he wasn’t a particularly good student at school and left college without any qualifications and little idea of what he wanted to do. However, he says he’d seen his parents struggling financially to keep up with the maintenance and repairs on the family’s fleet of vehicles, and he figured that learning how to do it himself might help them save a bit of money.

He enrolled in an auto mechanics course at the Australia Pacific Technical College (APTC) in Samoa, did an apprenticeship, and continued to balance work and study as he completed his certificate. At the time, the APTC was offering graduates the chance to study for a Bachelor of Applied Technology - Automotive Engineering at Unitec, and Lite says he grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

He moved to New Zealand as an International student in 2012 –a daunting move for someone who had never been further than Samoa’s capital city, Apia.

“For me, it was my first time being away from home, and I missed my family and friends to start with,” he says. “But it didn’t take me long to get connected to Unitec life, and to make friends with people from all around the world and get involved with student events.”

But it wasn’t just student life that appealed to Lite. He says his lecturers inspired and encouraged him, and helped him overcome his challenges when he started to doubt himself.

High demand for specialised skills

“I learnt from the best teachers in the automotive business,” he says. “It was a big professional advantage for me to gain my skills and knowledge at Unitec, and the staff played a huge part in my time there.”

Lite returned to Samoa after graduating, and soon found that the broad scope of his applied degree helped open up new and expanded opportunities, with high demand for his specialised skills in the Pacific nation.

“Teaching has always been my dream,” he says. “After working in the automotive industry for nearly twenty years, and now lecturing in my field at my old school, it’s a real thrill to share some of my knowledge, and to give something back to the community.”

It’s never too late to learn

“I always encourage my students - no matter their age - that it’s never too late to learn. I’d recommend anyone who has the chance to study at Unitec to grab the opportunity with both hands, just as I did eight years ago.”

“I always share stories with my students of how I got to where I am today. I tell them everything about what I learned from my time at Unitec, and what I got out of it.

“I’m hoping that what I’ve done will encourage other Pasifika students to study at Unitec. I really hope I can be a role model for them. Dreams really can come true.”

New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil)

Highlights

• Unitec is the largest provider of civil engineering training in New Zealand at diploma level.

Programme overview

Get a solid grounding in civil engineering to cleverly design, construct, operate and maintain infrastructure. Through applying mathematics and physics to civil engineering problems, you’ll learn to develop the expertise needed to successfully manage civil engineering projects.

When you graduate, you’ll be able to use your knowledge to make informed decisions and implement them, competently perform technical work using national and international standards, and apply civil engineering theory to design, contract administration and construction practice. You’ll gain a solid understanding of water, structural, geotechnical and road engineering, and develop invaluable civil and structural drawing skills.

This diploma allows you to specialise in any one of the following four areas:

Structures: the design and construction of simple buildings, bridges, retaining walls and other structures.

Water Resources: the design and construction of water, wastewater and stormwater reticulation systems.

Roading: the design, construction and maintenance of roads, pavements and road drainage systems.

Geotechnical: the assessment of soil and rock structures to support civil engineering structures, designing and constructing simple soil structures and testing and monitoring earthworks.

This Bachelor’s degree will develop the skills you need for a career as a civil engineer in three years. You’ll gain advanced knowledge in a specialist area - environmental, geotechnical, water, roading and transportation or structural engineering.

Programme overview

Learn to solve practical engineering problems, make informed decisions and apply technology to civil engineering projects. Explore computer-modelling techniques, civil engineering project management, engineering materials and structures, and construction practices.

Specialise in one of five civil engineering pathways:

Structural engineering: design, construction, and supervision of buildings and other structures.

Water engineering: water supply, wastewater or stormwater disposal, river catchment systems, hydrology and erosion management and urban drainage systems.

Geotechnical engineering: analysis, design and construction of foundations, slopes, earthworks structures and retaining walls

Roading and transportation: design, construction and maintenance of roads, traffic engineering and urban transportation studies.

Admission requirements

For this programme you’ll need:

Academic

1. 60 credits at NCEA Level 3 or higher including: 14 credits in physics

• 14 credits in mathematics (including algebra and calculus)

• 14 credits in one other approved subject

• 18 credits from up to two other approved subjects

2. To be 16 years old by the time you start this programme

Making the most of a life-changing opportunity

Jeron Gwaite’e, the first in his family to pursue tertiary education, attributes his success in obtaining a Civil Engineering degree from Unitec to the Manaaki scholarship programme. The programme supports students from developing countries, like Jeron’s Solomon Islands home. “It was a life-changing experience and an answer to my prayers,” he explains.

The scholarship and support from Unitec staff and community groups helped him achieve his education goals and land his first engineering role.

“The Manaaki scholarship not only helped with my studies but also helped me get my first job,” Jeron explains.

For high achieving students in the Solomon Islands, a Manaaki scholarship is a pathway to educational opportunities in New Zealand. Being a successful applicant boosted Jeron’s self-confidence and motivated him to excel in his studies when he arrived at Unitec.

After completing his Bachelor of Engineering Technology degree, the credibility of the scholarship played a crucial role in landing Jeron a sought-after graduate construction engineer role with the NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). The Honiara-based role called for a Manaaki graduate. It involves assisting with delivering MFAT’s infrastructure programme in the Solomons, including airfield upgrades in remote areas.

Jeron says it’s a dream come true to use his skills and knowledge to make a positive difference in his home country. “I’m beyond grateful for the Manaaki scholarship.”

Supporting success at Unitec and beyond

Jeron acknowledges the support of Unitec staff, who guided him throughout his studies and job search. He particularly credits his final year project supervisor, Don Houghton, with aiding in his success. Unitec’s student support teams, including the Pacific Centre and Student Support and Scholarships team, were welcoming and encouraging, helping him settle in and make the most of the experience.

An avid futsal player, Jeron spent his time outside the classroom co-captaining the Unitec team and playing for Wantoks FC, a Solomon Islands community futsal team in Auckland.

This electrical engineering diploma is an industry-recognised qualification with a focus on power.

You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of electrical engineering theory and practice, and you’ll develop the knowledge and skills to work as an engineering technician on construction sites and in engineering workplaces.

After the first year of study, you’ll cover the necessary theory requirements in preparation for your EST theory and regulations exam. With additional practical experience (currently 18 months) you can apply for your EST registration with the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB).

This qualification also allows you to pursue registration as an electrical engineer, allowing you to specify, design and supervise the construction or manufacture of systems and equipment that produce, distribute and/ or use electricity. Work includes designing the electrical wiring of a building and doing the work of an electrician.

Specialisations

Mechatronics: work with robotics and automation to produce better products and processes. Mechatronics is an exciting multidisciplinary field that requires you to combine learning and work across several engineering fields including mechanical, electronics, computer, telecommunications, systems and control engineering.

Power: this field deals with the generation, transmission, distribution and utilisation of electric power and the related electrical systems. Work in this field can include designing the equipment or systems that produce, use or distribute electricity. It could also lead to supervising, maintenance or operations of these systems and equipment.

Electronics: this is the science of electrically controlling electrical energy through circuits using active and passive electrical components and interconnection technology. This will lead to work in design, development, testing and/or supervision of the manufacturing of electrical equipment.

Industry award recognises innovation and application of engineering programme

Unitec’s innovative Bachelor of Engineering Technology programme has gained industry recognition with a student design to create a sustainable, self-powered leak detection system.

The collaborative project, developed by then-Electrical Engineering students Dylan Maurice and Lechen Liu, focused on developing a micro hydro generator for use in both residential and agricultural water piping.

The microgenerator design produced maximum power for minimal pressure loss to the network, allowing it to provide a power source for a number of other sensors to be deployed in both high- and low-pressure systems.

The student design was recognised by Engineering New Zealand’s Auckland Branch’s GT Murray Award in 2023 for the best student member presentation on an engineering research or design project.

“The award is special because while engineers possess many of the ideas and skills needed to solve world problems, the GT Murray Award is as much about being able to present ideas clearly as it is demonstrating innovation and ingenuity,” says Richard Anthony, contracts manager for Fulton Hogan and host of the GT Murray Awards in 2024.

“The winner gains recognition for both themselves, their sponsors, their tertiary institute and publicises their project to the engineering community.”

Dylan Maurice, who is currently working as a Mechatronics Graduate Engineer at TransGrid in New South Wales, agrees that winning the award and having the project as part of his portfolio has been hugely beneficial.

“It gave me an edge when applying for jobs, especially in the engineering field, as it demonstrated practical problem-solving, innovation, and the ability to work on complex systems. It’s also been a point of pride for me, as it showcased the hands-on learning and skills I gained at Unitec,” he says.

Wayne Holmes, Senior Lecturer in Electrical Engineering, supervised the research and design alongside fellow lecturer Ashley Yan.

“The students didn’t ever treat this as just another school project — they envisioned it reaching the manufacturing stage,” he says.

“We spent quality time at the client’s factory, testing prototypes and experiencing real-world research and development, collaborating closely with the engineers there.

“Their success has definitely sparked enthusiasm among other students to aim higher and achieve more.”

Dr Momen Bahadornejad, Senior Lecturer in Electrical Engineering and programme co-ordinator for Industry Projects, teaches students how to prepare and present their designs for the annual award by organising mock presentation events, using the feedback to help them improve their content and delivery.
