How to Apply Te Tuku Tono

Applying for a programme is super easy - just follow these five steps. Before applying, make sure you have your certified ID documents (passport or birth certificate) handy.

Decide on the right programme for you and click ‘Apply Now’

Search the programme you’re interested in studying on the Unitec website, unitec.ac.nz, and click Apply Now.

2

Complete your application

You’ll need to create an account with Unitec by entering your personal details and academic history into the system.

3

Complete your enrolment tasks

When you’ve finished your application, you’ll be transferred to an enrolment portal. Here you’ll need to complete some tasks such as uploading supporting documents to support your application.

4

Accept your ‘Offer of Study’

If all goes well you’ll receive an offer of study. You can accept this offer via your enrolment portal.

5

Finish off remaining tasks

If your offer is conditional, you may be required to complete additional tasks. Wrap these up as quickly as possible so we can finalise your place in the programme.

Funding Your Studies Te Tahua Akoranga

Studying is an investment in your future and a great way to ensure you remain work-ready in today’s ever-changing world. Here are some of the options for funding your studies:

Fees-Free

Fees Free supports eligible learners by covering the final year of their first qualification, helping to ease financial barriers to completion. When enrolling in tertiary education, it’s important to plan for the payment of your fees. You may choose to apply for a student loan through StudyLink or explore other financial support options. Unitec may ask for your IRD number, which helps link your qualification completion to your entitlement claim.

From 2026, you will be able to confirm your eligibility and claim your Fees Free after finishing your qualification through myIR on Inland Revenue’s website. You will have 12 months to claim your entitlement once you complete your qualification or programme.

Checking your eligibility

To check whether you’re eligible for fees-free study, follow these steps:

1. Go to feesfree.govt.nz and enter your National Student Number (NSN). If you don’t have this handy, there are additional instructions on the website.

2. Make sure you choose the eligibility criteria for provider-based study.

3. Then, you’ll receive one of the following results: Yes – you’re eligible for fees-free No – you’re not eligible for fees-free

Maybe – not sure if you’re eligible for fees-free

4. Once you’re eligible with TEC, you can apply to study at Unitec. If you get a maybe, you’ll need to submit a statutory declaration form at feesfree.govt.nz as soon as possible, so there are no disruptions to your studies.

Youth Guarantee Scheme

If you’re between the ages of 16 and 24, a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident and enrolled in an eligible 6 or 12-month Level 3 programme, you might be able to apply for funding under the Youth Guarantee Scheme to cover your compulsory tuition fees.

Here’s how it works:

1. Apply online for an eligible course or programme.

2. If your application is successful, you’ll have an interview with the Youth Guarantee team to talk about funding.

3. Youth Guarantee-funded places of study are limited, so apply as early as possible.

Student Loans and Allowances

StudyLink is the best place to start when looking for help to pay for your study. What you’re eligible to apply for depends on your residency status, age, income and course type.

StudyLink may be able to help with:

• Compulsory tuition fees

• Course-related costs

• Living costs

• Other costs (e.g. disability or childcare)

Student Loan

A student loan can help with paying for your tuition fees (compulsory fees charged by us), study materials (e.g. books, computer, travel) and living costs. Because this is a loan, you’ll have to pay it back once you start working.

Note: if you’re eligible for fees-free study, you might not need a loan for your tuition fees but you may still need one for course-related and living costs.

Student Allowance

A student allowance is a weekly payment to help you with your living expenses while you’re studying. If you’re eligible, you don’t have to pay this one back.

Getting your application ready

The application process for a student loan and/or allowance can be quite complicated, so we do have drop-in sessions available at the beginning of each semester where our Student Support Advisors can help you with your application. These advisors are also available throughout the year to assist.

Scholarships

We have scholarships that recognise the achievements and the challenges of dedicating yourself to learning, whether that’s in a vocational trade, at undergraduate level or at Master’s degree level and beyond.

We understand that financial barriers can be significant for students. That’s why most scholarship funding helps support students with costs associated with study. That could be tuition fees or course-related costs like books and supplies, as well as living expenses such as childcare and transport.

Applying for a scholarship

We offer scholarships designed specifically to help reduce the pressure, so you can focus on achieving your academic goals.

We offer a variety of scholarships to students and highly recommend looking at our website for current scholarships.

Here are some of the scholarships we have offered in the past:

• Māori & Pacific Scholarships

Scholarships for new students, those progressing into a new programme and academic excellence scholarships in undergraduate degrees. Some of these scholarships also provided mentoring opportunities and other ways to connect with Unitec’s Māori and Pacific communities. We also offer Kura Kaupapa / Rūmaki Reo scholarships.

New Student & School Leaver Scholarships

Scholarships for students who have recently left high school or people seeking a career change, as well as our disabled and neurodiverse learners, to further support and enhance the student experience.

Help while you study – financial assistance

Sometimes unexpected and additional costs can pop up. If you find yourself struggling financially during your studies, Unitec has Study Grants for essential course-related costs (up to $500) that domestic, full-time students can apply for. There’s also an emergency hardship fund that can provide some financial help, a small one-off payment to help you cover the cost of unforeseen, essential expenses. Our Student Support team can help put you in touch with other support services that can help to get you back on your feet.

• Once you have graduated, you will meet all the requirements to apply for CA ANZ and CPA’s professional pathways. After three years of mentored work experience, you can register as a Chartered Accountant.

Internship-based learning. In your final year, you’ll complete a work placement at an organisation of your choice, allowing you to apply your skills in a work environment. You will be prepared to move seamlessly into work once you graduate.

Accountants are well-known for their problem-solving and numerical skills. They’re pivotal to the success of any business, and it’s a job that’s always in high demand.

As an accountant you will help organisations make better business decisions. You will be responsible for maintaining and analysing financial records to ensure tax and reporting requirements are met and also provide the data and advice companies need to minimise costs, boost revenue and increase profits.

Because accountancy can be broad and full of variety, the Bachelor of Accounting (Level 7) will prepare you to work in a variety of roles across diverse organisations. You will gain a deep understanding of accounting and finance principles and the dynamic local and international business environment. You will also learn to apply your technical know-how and skills in many cultural contexts and business settings.

This programme prepares you for a management career in today’s competitive business environment. In the second year, you’ll narrow your focus to either Human Resource Management or Operations, and apply your skills in an Industry-Based Learning (IBL) work placement.

From fashion to freezers –Applied Business student thrives on real-world experience

Avid sports fanatic Ruwantha Fernando would give you the shirt off his back --- literally.

Having worked in fashion and logistics for a suite of global companies for nearly 20 years, there’s not much that the Sri Lankan national doesn’t know about shipping clothes around the world.

Ruwantha came to Unitec as an international student to do his Master’s in Applied Business, armed with a wealth of hands-on experience in the rag trade.

“Even though I had extensive product and business knowledge, and experience in supply chain management, I felt that a professional qualification would help enhance my career opportunities.

“I figured that an international education would allow me access to world-class facilities and industry insights that would further develop my knowledge. I chose New Zealand as a supply chain-driven country, and Unitec for its facilities and learning opportunities.”

Specialising in Supply Chain Management and Logistics, Ruwantha has relished the programme’s real-world industry opportunities that allow students to work alongside leading retail businesses such as Gilmours.

Ruwantha led a student project that focused on the internal implications of a supply chain disruption at the company, proposing an inventory and rental solution to help leverage a new freezer facility. The group also explored employee resilience to strengthen internal processes and identify future leaders.

The project, which received top marks, showcased how students develop practical solutions to real challenges while gaining valuable team and leadership experience.

“I enjoyed working with various groups of people from different nationalities and occupations, sharing knowledge and relating things learned from our professional work,” Ruwantha says.

He says one of the most fulfilling aspects of the course is seeing how what he’s currently learning aligns with the daily tasks he’d been executing at work over the past nearly 20 years.

“It makes sense of the actions and strategies that have supported me over the years but with more depth and conviction of the application through my studies.

“I really enjoy the structured course which allows us to push our knowledge boundaries and present our work professionally,” he says. “I’ve also enjoyed presenting my work to an audience of people from different professions. This requires me to adapt my work to the technicality the subject demands and use simple, relatable terminology for everyone’s understanding.”

Sanjeev Vellore Ranganathan has been integral to Unitec’s Business School for several years. As a senior lecturer in Management and co-ordinator of the Internship-Based Learning (IBL) programme, his genuine care for his students shines through in everything he does.

With extensive experience, industry connections, and ongoing academic research, Sanjeev is ideally placed to deliver the theoretical teaching and practical guidance students need.

“It’s a dynamic discipline – it is constantly changing. Sanjeev researches local and global trends, so he knows how best to prepare students to meet industry needs,” explains Malama Saifoloi, Academic Programme Manager.

A practical, engaging approach

Sanjeev’s teaching style balances the academic and the practical, using a mix of lectures, group projects, and one-on-one support.

“Sanjeev’s classes have always been very engaging and closely linked with the real world,” explains former student Ricky Dragland, now National Workshops & Reverse Logistics Manager at FujiFilm NZ.

“His seminars taught me and my fellow students a lot about being professional and self-reliant in the workplace,” she explains.

Smoothing the path to career success

Sanjeev has been involved with the IBL programme since 2011, drawing on his industry connections to find student internships and career opportunities.

“It takes a lot of skill and patience to work with both parties, learners and host organisations, to meet their respective needs. He’s so good at fulfilling their needs,” says Malama.

Karan Sharma, WMS Trainer at Foodstuffs NZ, credits Sanjeev’s guidance for his career success. Sanjeev introduced Karan to Gilmours, which led to an internship, a job opportunity, and, ultimately, Karan’s current role.

“His decision to introduce us to Gilmours not only expanded my horizons but also paved the way for me to secure a position at Foodstuffs,” Karan explains.

Karan is just one of many IBL students who have turned internship opportunities into career success.

“Many of our students secure employment from their placement –that’s a key success story,” adds Malama.

Going above and beyond for students

A common thread that runs through feedback from Sanjeev’s former students is the feeling that he cares about their success well beyond their studies. Outside of lectures and the IBL programme, he’s known for his dedication to his students and his willingness to jump in with extra help whenever it’s needed.

“What truly sets Sanjeev apart from other lecturers is his genuine care for students. He has shown multiple times, not only to me but to many students, how caring he is and how he wants us all to succeed.”

This programme provides a solid base of knowledge around brand management, digital marketing, advertising, business analytics and consumer behaviour. Learn how to help an organisation achieve its marketing goals using strategies and applied digital marketing.

Admission requirements

For this programme you’ll need:

Academic

1. A recognised degree or equivalent; or

2. A professional qualification in a relevant discipline; or

3. The ability to demonstrate competencies equivalent to a graduate from the above qualifications

If you’re a graduate of our Bachelor of Business programme, you won’t be able to study this programme in the same specialisation as you majored in the degree.

English

Applicants will need one or more of the following:

• 8 credits at NCEA Level 2 in English (4 in reading, 4 in writing)

• Provide evidence that you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency such as IELTS

Achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years
