Flipkart to Deploy over 25,000 Electric Vehicles by 2030

lipkart has announced its plans for deploying more than 25,000 electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030, an initiative to change its logistic fleet to green energy vehicles. The online retailer owned by Walmart Inc. made the announcement just a day after Amazon India said it deployed nearly 100 Mahindra Treo Zor three-wheelers. Flipkart has partnered with leading EV manufacturers such as Hero Electric, Mahindra Electric, and Piaggio for making customized vehicles. It also stated that it will place requirements in service contracts, install charging infrastructures around delivery hubs and offices, conduct awareness programs, and encourage delivery executives to make use of the EVs.

Zhong Shanshan’s bottled-water company Nongfu Springo Co. wasted a record 20 percent, making Mukesh Ambani the richest with a net worth of about $80 billion. For the last two years, Mukesh Ambani had led the ranking as Asia’s richest man. Zhong Shanshan had previously won the title by surpassing Chinese tech titans like Jack Ma. 16-year-old French nun, believed to be the World’s second-oldest person has survived Covid-19 and is looking ahead to celebrate her 117th birthday. According to the Gerontology Research Group that validates details of people above 110 or older, has listed Frenchwoman Lucile Randon which is Sister Andre’s birthname to be the second-oldest living person in the world. Sister Andre who is believed to be blind and uses a wheelchair was diagnosed with Covid-19 in mid-January. But just after three weeks she was tested negative and recovered from the virus. She wasn’t even worried when she came to know about her diagnosis, on the other hand, she was very worried about the other residents.

The three-time Grand National winner was pictured sitting on a dead horse at a training yard while making a phone call. Lady Gaga’s Bulldogs Stolen After Shooting Her Dog-Walker

wo of Lady Gaga’s French bulldogs were being stolen after a gunman shot her dog-walker in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The singer is offering a reward of $500,000 for the returns of her dogs, Koji and Gustav. A third bulldog named Miss Asia ran away during the incident and was later recovered by the police. The victim was walking the dogs when a white Nissan Altima pulled over and two men tried to steal the dogs. The dog-walker was transferred to the hospital immediately as per the reports. Gaga is currently in Rome working on a Ridley Scott film, Gucci. French bulldogs cost thousands of dollars. Similarly, a woman in San Francisco was beaten in January at gunpoint, where three men stole her gray French bulldog puppy named Chloe.

Nails are small and not so noticeable even in close vicinity. Also, it is a niche industry. How did you get the idea to make a business out of it?

Yes, it’s very niche. But it is an area that has long been ignored by the beauty industry and therefore presents a huge opportunity. Like it or not, your appearance matters as that’s how people form opinions about you. Nails might be small but they have a big impact on our overall personality. Especially during business or personal interactions where one can’t help but look at your hands and unconsciously take in how beautiful or dirty the nails are. I strongly believe that if you don’t wish to turn people off and ruin your meetings, you have to take care of your nails, giving them the same attention and care you provide for your face. People who understand this use it to their advantage by paying extra attention to their hands and nails and benefit from the positive impression they make. We truly believe that everyone must look at their best and that’s exactly what we offer. We must be doing things right because our patrons also seem to share our belief and consider it a big deal and care about and pay for our niche services.

You have a cosmopolitan perspective, yet you started this in Cochin, a place not as liberal as Mumbai or Delhi. What was the reason?

There is a lot in India beyond places like Delhi and Mumbai. Even though I have many friends and acquaintances in both places, it was just the reason why I chose to start from Kochi. I simply did not want to begin my business in a place where many people knew me. I wanted to gauge if my venture could make a difference. In a new place, I would have nothing but brand philosophy and quality of services to cover for me. If people accept it, I could say that my business idea had merit. So, it was kind of a test and it proved to be the right thing to do. People in Kochi loved what we offered. They kept coming back to us. Our patrons gave us the confidence to experiment and we introduced additional services. Our audience has been growing ever since and now we are in expansion mode and have plans for several operations in several other places.

What is the force behind you? Who have been your all-time influencers?

If there is one person whom I’d credit for all my success, it has to be my husband. He has

been my strength. Someone who truly believes in me and wishes nothing but the best for me. His work ethic and integrity inspire me to do better every day. He has been there for me since day one and helped me realise my dream. He has been my strength in moments of weakness, gave me clarity when I was in doubt. Most importantly, he taught me to believe in myself and reach out for whatever I feel worth working hard for. Apart from my husband, I believe it is the members of my team at The Nail Artistry who contributed towards making this venture a success. They stood by my side through thick and thin and helped me meet the expectations of our customers. I can never thank them enough for their hard work and dedication. I would also like to credit myself a bit for having the vision and the will to pursue it relentlessly to realise the dream. Of course, being a Taurean also helps!

You're an actor, entrepreneur and model. Which role do you enjoy more? What are the challenges that helped you become this version of yourself?

All roles have their benefits but being an entrepreneur makes me content and liberated. I value achievements and being

independent. It is only through what I love to do that I can have control over my life's direction. I also believe that a business person has more shelf life than an actor or model. So, that is yet another plus.

As a socialite, you tend to be a victim of rumours. What are the most bizarre rumours you have heard about yourself? You can list 3 or more:-

As someone who respects everyone’s personal space and privacy, I steer clear of any rumour or the people who indulge in the same. Frankly speaking, I believe that giving even an iota of importance to a rumour or its perpetrators is a huge disservice to my value system and ethics. Rumours are what they are - unworthy of my time or a comment.

How has your husband been a rock for you throughout your life?

My husband supported me like no one else in my journey. He always believed in me and had faith in my dream, maybe even more than I did. I am truly blessed to have him in my life. Had it not been for him, I might have given it up a long time ago. He made me believe in my capabilities and encouraged me to chase my dreams. He stood by my side through the darkest of my days, encouraging me to stand up for myself. He is the reason I have been able to prove that I have what it takes and the success of The Nail Artistry is proof of that.

What can bring the best out of a woman entrepreneur?

Staying focused. There’s a lot of noise and negativity around us. People will let you down and enjoy seeing you stumble. But no matter what, you have to keep moving on. Staying focused makes a huge difference. Always keep your head high and nothing else matters.

Where would you like to see yourself five years from now?

Five years from now, I see myself as a more successful and mature

COVID has impacted the lipstick industry. Is it Good news for your business? Do you think nails are in vogue now?

COVID-19 has not been good news for any business. Even the healthcare businesses that flourished during the period won’t call it good news. They are the ones who are bearing the brunt of the pandemic as they are at the fore-

front dealing with it. The amount of suffering, deaths and despair that they witness every day would render any amount of money meaningless. However, this has also been a time when many people started self-care and I must say that maintaining the nails has now become a part of one’s beauty regime like never before. We find that people are taking care of their nails’ health and hygiene like never before and as a business, we definitely will benefit from the same.

Tell us about the kind of clients you come across and the amount of work you indulge in to make

Your favourite actor: Amitabh Bachchan Your most romantic moment: Ten years ago, when my husband proposed to me by booking an entire theatre for just the two of us where the movie Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa was running. One thing you remember when you were five years old: My impatience to be a grown-up. The most attractive character of a man: His intellect (I’m a sapiosexual). The most annoying character: Being deceitful. Your most favourite holiday destination: Paris, any day! Your house is on fire. You can take only five things. What will they be? Just my purse. The Nail Artistry is a luxury salon chain that has established itself as an absolute favourite amongst its target audience. The Nail Artistry is where the elite and celebrities head when they wish to be pampered with a relaxing and luxurious manicure or pedicure. We also get a lot of brides who wish to be at their relaxed best on their special day. They all seem to love the sheer luxe experience they receive from The Nail Artistry team where they are treated royally. We don’t find any of our clients challenging. A few of them do require more than usual pampering once in a while. But, all of us get into that kind of mood once in a while. For us, it is a part of our job to gauge the state of mind of our patrons and meet their requirements. I can say with confidence that except for one or two rare occasions, no client has left our premises without a broad smile.

You are born and brought up in the Middle East. What is missing in India, particularly Kerala?

I may have been born and brought up in the Middle East but I am a proud Indian. There’s nothing amiss in India and for me, Kerala seems the best place. The natural beauty of the place and its people is just too much to ignore. I am

Your business is with the fashion industry. What has changed in the fashion industry? Where do you see it going in the post COVID world?

Like every other industry, the fashion industry is also adapting to the post-COVID-19 world. Rapid changes are happening across all levels. Fashion weeks are going online and a more robust and fast-growing online market has emerged for fashion products. Brands and designers are working more on online-oriented marketing strategies. Consumers are also rapidly becoming accustomed to online shopping.

What makes Nail Artistry unique?

Competition is irrelevant to us. What we do at The Nail Artistry is unique. The Nail Artistry offers the most luxurious and safest salon experience to its patrons. Others might try to copy us but they can never achieve our absolute focus. We have always treated our patrons like royalty. Most regular salons miss out on the nuances of a professional manicure or pedicure. They treat them just as a part of their routine while at The Nail Artistry, this is the crux of our very being. Women are more mindful, intuitive, flexible and resilient. Also, we have gratitude and empathy, which I find are sourly missing in most businessmen.

Who is the strongest woman you have come across? And why? That woman who stares back at me in the mirror is the strongest one for me. I look up to her for the strength and determination that she displays every day in her quest to prove herself. She may go through a lot on a given day, still, she chooses to keep moving. That takes real courage. She’s my hero!

Gender is dissolving; we are talking about LGBT, Transgender, and more liberal views on gender? How do you see this? I truly believe that what matters is that people remain comfortable in whatever identity they choose for themselves. We, as a society, need to grow up and stop categorising and chastising people for the choices they make. Instead, support them in their quest to find their true self.

What quality should a woman entrepreneur possess to be successful? Women are ambitious and focused. We're mindful, intuitive, flexible and resilient. We have gratitude and empathy. All these must be there in the personality of a good business leader. As such, I sincerely believe that a woman has all the qualities inside her to be successful in business. We just have to stay positive consistently. Despite all the odds and those people around who might want to bring us down, we have to learn to stay positive and keep moving towards the goal. Has patriarchy brought your spirit down? Since it is all around us, patriarchy does get under my skin once in a while too, but I don’t allow it to sustain and influence my spirits for long. I remind myself that I am not only fighting it but I am doing it well. I also remind myself that I am not fighting it alone either. There are millions of women like me in all corners of India, and the world, who are fighting it every day. I tell myself that I have to be strong and prevail for the sake of future generations of women. All of us deserve better and we are together in this fight against patriarchy in our society. Three points that women who wish to fly high should keep in mind? One, being financially independent is as important as being emotionally strong. Two, being good at what you do is as important as being good to those around you. Three, your hands and feet deserve the same tender love and care you reserve for your face.

We made sure that none of our employees suffered because of money issues. We paid everyone’s salaries even when our salons were shut down. I was available to them throughout the lockdown for counselling. As an entrepreneur I knew I had to be strong for my team.

used and all the manicure and pedicure pods are disinfected after every session. All our clients draw confidence from our efforts and it has helped us a great deal in pulling them all back to our salons for their nails and beauty routines.

Why should all women think about paying attention to nails?

Whether we're at work or home, we use our hands and feet all day long. While most of us take good care of our face in the regular beauty or grooming routines, somehow we just tend to ignore our hands and feet. They need our attention too and we need to take good care of them as we use them so much. So it’s necessary to give both our hands and feet the much-deserved pampering to help them de-stress. It adds a lot to a woman’s overall feeling of wellbeing. Proper manicure and pedicure can be as extensive as taking care of your face. It gives you confidence and makes you ready to take on the world

n important development for the Indian economy in recent years has been the remarkable success achieved in lowering interest rates. This came about because the RBI has steadily cut its key policy rate since January 2014 when the repo rate had peaked at 8 per cent. The repo rate has now come down to 4 per cent (the lowest ever) for a total reduction of 4 percentage points over six years. During the global financial crisis of 2008, the repo rate had bottomed out at 4.75 per cent before starting to rise again. Incidentally, the RBI had tried to raise rates briefly from June to August

Investors are becoming uncomfortable with the surge in money printing by central banks and that has also led to the ongoing rush of investments into digital cryptocurrency. The balance sheet of the US Federal Reserve has jumped from $4 trillion to around $7 trillion in 2020, a 75% growth in a single year, thereby expanding the supply of dollars at an unprecedented pace. The debasement of the US dollar has been a major source of support to gold prices. However, the returns on gold during the year have been far outstripped by the multi-fold rise in digital cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin, the most famous of the cryptocurrencies, rose 700% in 2020 and, over the course of the last 5 years, it has given returns of 85 times!

2018, when it increased the repo rate from 6 to 6.5 percent. In fact, in the March 2018 issue of this publication, my article titled “Are interest rates poised for reversal?” about my expectations of interest rates heading up, proved correct in that the RBI increased the repo rate from 6 to 6.25 per cent in June 2018 and then to 6.5 per cent in August 2018. However, the IL&FS crisis hit the economy towards the end of 2018 and there were no further hikes. The RBI’s move to cut interest rates over the last 3 to 4 years followed the decline in India’s inflation rate and reflected its confidence in the government’s ability to keep a lid

on fiscal deficit. During its February 2021 meeting, the RBI left its benchmark repurchase rate at 4 per cent stating that it would maintain an accommodative stance as long as necessary to support the economy hit by the COVID-19 crisis, while ensuring that inflation remains within the target going forward. The RBI revised its inflation forecast to 5 per cent from 5.2 per cent in H1 2021-22 and 4.3 per cent for Q3 2021-22. Meanwhile, the real GDP growth is projected at 10.5 per cent in 2021-22.

cial to industry and business across sectors and this is one of the reasons why stock markets in India have boomed recently. Against this backdrop, recent events suggest that an unwelcome reversal of the trend may be in the offing. While the RBI has held rates steady since the last cut effected in May 2020, it is the action in the bond market that points to rougher weather going forward.

Warning signals from the bond market

Thanks to interest rates falling steadily since 2014, the bond market participants enjoyed a rally in prices for much of the last four years. Yields had fallen from their peak of 9.10 per cent in April 2014 to 5.76

per cent in July 2020. The sustained decline in bond yield was mainly due to the easy monetary policy followed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) after January 2014, with the repo rate coming down from 8 per cent in 2014 to 4 per cent as of today. The decline in bond yield (in other words, the rally in bond prices) came to a halt by December 2020 as the RBI neared the end of its easy monetary policy cycle. The RBI finds itself unable to push for further rate cuts despite the contraction in GDP for two consecutive quarters (following the pandemic) because of the risk of higher inflation on the back of increased borrowings by the government. Market participants expect that the RBI will likely in-

crease the policy rate in 2H-FY21. The key factor underlining this view is the likelihood of inflation making a comeback, which would cause the RBI to normalize policy sooner than currently expected. In the Union Budget presented in February, the FM budgeted for fiscal deficit at a much higher level than last year’s budget given the pressing need to stimulate economic activities. However, because this necessarily involves higher government borrowing, the bond interest rate cycle turned, resulting in a spike in the cost of borrowing for the government as well as for the highly rated corporates. Yield on the 10-year benchmark bond went up recently. Since the Union Budget

was unveiled, the benchmark yields have hardened to 6.20 in March (up by 42 bps). Even the yield on oneyear T-bill has increased from 3.40% to 3.70% in February this year. The elevated fiscal deficit shown in the budget was not unexpected. After all, there is a clear need to revive the economy and channel investment into infrastructure, and it was expected that fiscal deficits would likely run higher than base for a couple of years or so. In the corporate bond market, two AAA-rated borrowers had to reduce the size of their debt issuances recently, due to the higher yield demanded by the market. Incidentally borrowing costs for large, AAA-rated PSU's have increased by 80-100 bps over the past few weeks. These days, the bond markets and the RBI are involved in a tug of war over the yield on government securities. The RBI chose to devolve several auctions on the underwriters last month as the market was demanding a higher yield. The RBI wants to keep the government's borrowing costs below 6 per cent, which market participants believe is less than the fair price. In this context, it may be mentioned that the increase in yield on government debt

is not unique to India as almost all the large economies have witnessed rising yields on government bonds.

Risk of inflation – commodities and oil

Fiscal stimulus in the advanced economies can be inflationary too, as we have begun to see in the commodities space where prices have firmed up. With prospects of faster than expected economic revival and with governments across the world loosening their purse strings to stimulate economic recovery, the risk of inflation is real although it may not be significant in the near term (i.e. over the next year). However, the current trends indicate that the period of low commodity prices may have come to an end. After Pfizer’s vaccine announcement revived hopes of a quick end to our pandemic woes, global commodity prices started moving higher on hopes of increasing demand as the pace of economic activities picks up. Commodity prices started rallying from June 2020 onwards thanks to a post-pandemic recovery, rising global liquidity, and a weaker dollar. Steel, cement, coal, copper, aluminium, iron ore, are up by up to 75% since

June 2020. Copper and tin prices hit their highest in nine years earlier in February, while crude oil continues to trade at a 13-month high. Oil is a ‘leading’ indicator of growth in the global economy and in 2021, prices went up by 20 per cent within one month reflecting optimism about revival of growth. Moreover, greater compliance by OPEC+ members in respect of their agreed upon production quotas has also supported prices. In April 2020, in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic, the OPEC+ alliance decided to enforce a 10 million barrel per day (bpd) production cut till June 2020, which gave way to a cut of 7.6 million bpd until the end of the year, and now to a cut of 5.6 million bpd through 2021 until April 2022. Crude oil prices have risen more than 60 per cent since November 2020 when the first vaccine announcement was made. Staying with the outlook for crude oil prices, a further complication is that the new Biden administration in the US is very conscious about the environment. Many of its leading lights are opposed to fossil fuels and keen to force the pace of change towards renewable sources

of energy. This is in marked contrast to the pragmatic approach of the Trump administration that had no qualms about encouraging oil prospecting onshore and offshore. While the long-term impact of a shift to renewable sources of energy would be positive, there are short term costs to be borne. Under Trump, on each occasion that oil prices rose above US$ 60 to the barrel, shale oil producers would ramp up their output and keep a lid on prices. In fact, thanks to the rise of shale oil, the US had effectively become a netzero importer of crude oil. But now, with a new dispensation under the influence of environmentalists and climate warriors, there is less likelihood of domestic shale oil producers stepping up their output to keep a check on OPEC’s ability to raise prices. Against this backdrop, crude oil may well continue its rally to US$ 80 and above, which does not bode well for India’s battle against inflation.

The negative impact of rising yields

The overshooting of the fiscal deficit in the past and the revised higher deficit estimated for the cur-

rent FY 2021-22 will put further pressure on bond yields. The rising yield increases inflationary pressure (by pushing up costs for producers) and can lead to a slowdown in private investment and economic growth. As the supply of government bonds increases, it tends to “crowd out” private borrowers and forces up interest rates for them. Banks are also adversely affected by rising yields as it erodes bond prices and the value of their existing bond portfolio. The higher mark to market losses that banks are forced to book will further erode their profitability at a time when it is

already strained by non-performing loans. The cost of raising deposits for banks has also increased in recent months. Corporate entities are finding it harder to borrow from banks at competitive rates. Earlier, higher-rated corporate could borrow via corporate bonds at lower yields compared to bank borrowings. In a scenario of rising yields in the bond market, this window is also becoming costlier.

Outlook

As in India, bond markets in the advanced economies have also witnessed rising yields (and falling prices). US government's fiscal response to the great recession of 2008 was to the tune of $1.8 trillion, whereas the fiscal response to the pandemic has ballooned to $6.1 trillion and counting. Recently, the US Treasury bond yield jumped from 0.53 per cent in July 2020 to 1.42 per cent in March (nearly 90 bps jump in less than six months). It must be noted that pre-Lehman the US treasury yield was nearly 5 per cent. In this context, any deviation by the Indian government from the path of fiscal prudence will further pressurise the 10-year benchmark yield given the limited scope of help from the central bank. And that, as we have seen, can only make things more difficult for corporate borrowers who are now well-advised to get used to a period of belt-tightening.

ducation is a lifelong journey. There is no real state of being ‘educated’ and there is no defined finite-state when we know it all. The nature of change and flux is also that, just when we figure something and think that we have understood, things change. Science or art in its entirety lacks a definition and much of it is contextual. While science at least has the solid foundation for us to build on and understand new principles, art is often a matter of context and the nature of times. We have seen art – style and fashion, even follow a cyclical pattern, where the same hues of the past become avant-garde. In most cases, after the primary phase of education, be it the professional degrees or the more general qualifications, we tend to rely on our observational skills and the day-to-day interactions we have in our working environments to teach us further. What we pick up during this phase is the processes and the work scenarios from the quotidian tasks of work and perhaps display elements of discipline, culture and follow the way ‘things are done in your respective workspace. For the professional courses, there is a little more application of what was taught in college and some of the fundamental principles we picked up in college is polished further. In most cases, we also trudge the fine line between monotony and thinking. Workplace researchers have also identified – ‘motions of life’ (MOL ) as a set of regular steps we follow at work every day – across industries. MOL syndrome also indicates how brilliant people fall prey to the ‘regularity’ of work and eventually the longer they work in an environment, they tend to think less about change and ex-

pect every aspect of work to repeat itself. This is where we often see the experience as an impediment. In a lot of jobs, the nature of work is that the employee gets solid experience for three to four years, and then it is the reputation of the same tasks which comes in again and again. Perhaps our ability to think of variations and change diminishes slowly as we do these tasks again and again. Most organizations use training and development to counter some of these issues. The regular calendar of training programs on soft skills and technology is useful for a refresh, to view things from a different perspective, and to also break the monotony of place and context. There is some phenomenal content on ‘change management’ – a mixture of parables, ‘to do’ books, and presentations, and a slew of excellent speakers on the subject who can inspire and instil great ideas in you and also help you look at the same activities with a different lens. Risk factors and warning signs for Brain tumors

ost brain tumors are not linked with any known risk factors and have no obvious cause. But there are a few factors that can raise the risk of brain tumors.

Radiation exposure

The best-known environmental risk factor for brain tumors is radiation exposure, most often from radiation therapy to treat some other condition for eg leukemia. These brain tumors usually develop around 10 to 15 years after the radiation. Radiation-induced tumors are still rare. The possible risk from exposure to imaging tests, such as x-rays or CT scans, is not known for sure. However, the risk is negligibly small. Immune system disorders and drug-induced People with impaired immune systems have an increased risk of developing lymphomas (cancers of lymphocytes) of the brain or spinal

cord. Giving the cancer drug methotrexate into the fluid around the spinal cord (intrathecal methotrexate) for the treatment of leukemia has been shown to marginally increase the risk of brain tumors. Post-menopausal women who are taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or oral contraceptives may have a slightly increased risk of developing meningioma, but more research is needed to confirm this.

Family history

In rare cases (5%) brain cancers run in families and usually occur first when they are young. Some of these include Neurofibromatosis, Tuberous sclerosis, Von Hippel-Lindau disease, etc.

Other factors

Environmental factors such as exposure to solvents, pesticides, oil products, rubber, or vinyl chloride (a chemical used to manufacture plastics), petroleum products, and

certain other chemicals have been linked with an increased risk of brain tumors. Exposure to aspartame (a sugar substitute) and infection with certain viruses (EB virus, human CMV, polyomavirus) have been suggested as possible risk factors. Factors with uncertain, controversial, or unproven effects on brain tumor risk

Cell phone use

Cell phones give off radiofrequency (RF) rays, a form of energy on the electromagnetic spectrum between FM radio waves and those used in microwave ovens, radar, and satellite stations. RF rays have not been proved to induce cancer. And at the same time, RF rays have not been proved to be safe. Cell phones do not give off ionizing radiation, the type that can cause cancer by damaging the DNA. In 2011, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified mobile

phone radiation as Group 2B - possibly carcinogenic. That means that they should be used with caution. So additional research needs to be conducted.

Diet, Smoking, and alcohol

Dietary N-nitroso compounds may raise the risk of both childhood and adult brain tumors. Dietary Nnitroso compounds are formed in the body from nitrites or nitrates found in some cured meats, cigarette smoke, and cosmetics. Drinking alcohol doesn't seem to affect risk.

n the earlier article, I had shared my views on India Inc's future and my views on the direct tax proposals in the Union Budget 2021. In this article, I intend to discuss some of the key indirect proposals in the context of the amendments effected in the laws governing Goods & Services Tax (“GST”). As a precursor, it is indeed saddening to note that the Government despite its avowed objective of being against retrospective amendments, has made certain amendments retrospectively intending to nullify judgments of the Hon’ble Supreme Court.

Key amendments

1. The Finance Bill has proposed to amend the definition of the term “supply” to retrospectively cover transactions between a club and its members. It deserves to be noted that the Hon’ble Supreme Court in State of West Bengal Vs Calcutta Club & Others (2019) 19 SCC 107 held that services provided by a club to its members tantamount to selfservice, which is not liable to service tax. The non-applicability of service tax was based on the doctrine of mutuality, which is premised on the theory that a person cannot make a profit from himself. Further, an amount received from oneself cannot be regarded as income and taxable. Pertinently, the Government has sought to nullify this common law principle. Consequently, transactions between the club and its members and vice versa would now be subjected to GST.

It is also saddening to note that the Government in the amendments carried out in the Finance Bill even on the direct tax side has sought to unsettle the settled positions in law. It is not in dispute that the Constitution of India which is supreme adumbrates as well as divides powers, roles, and functions of three wings of the State - the legislature, the executive, and the judiciary. The doctrine of separation of powers which forms an integral part of our constitutional ethos requires each branch of the triad to respect the constitutional division and not to disturb the allocation of roles and functions between the triad. This has been aptly captured in the landmark judgment of the Hon’ble Supreme Court in Dr. Ashwani Kumar Vs Union of India and Another 2019 (12) SCALE 125 as follows: "These divisions are boundaries and limits fixed by the Constitution to check and prevent transgression by any one of the three branches into the powers, functions, and tasks that fall within the domain of the other wing. The three branches have to respect the constitutional division and not disturb the allocation of roles and functions between the triad. Adherence to the constitutional scheme dividing the powers and functions is a guard and check against potential abuse of power and the rule of law is secured when each branch observes the constitutional limitations to their powers, functions, and roles." 2. In the context of availing of

the input tax credit, the Finance Bill now proposes to add another eligibility prerequisite that a taxpayer will be eligible to claim the input tax credit on the vendor's invoices and debit notes only if such invoice or debit notes are declared by the concerned vendor in his statement of outward supply and the same is communicated to the taxpayer in GSTR-2A and GSTR-2B. Hence, given the said amendment, the claim of an input tax credit of a taxpayer will be restricted to the extent

of such credit reflected in the GSTR 2A and GSTR 2B. Because of the said amendment, which I feel is draconian, the onus is now cast on the taxpayer to ensure that his vendors are compliant and disciplined. This is a perfect example of the Government working for hand in glove with the bureaucracy to protect their incompetence. In which case, I would urge the Government to seriously consider downsizing its staff in various Departments.

3. In a major bolt to the industry and the accounting fraternity, the Government has now proposed to do away with the requirement of GST Audit. Presently, the GST Act requires that every registered person whose turnover exceeds INR 5 crores is required to submit a reconciliation statement in Form GSTR-9C certified by a Chartered Accountant or Cost Accountant (which is known as “GST Audit Report”). 4. Presently all supplies of goods

FINANCE and services to an SEZ or an SEZ Developer qualified as zero-rated supplies irrespective of whether or not such supplies of goods or services are used for authorized operations. The Finance Bill 2021 has sought to amend Section 16(1) of the IGST Act, 2017 according to which supplies of goods or services to an SEZ would qualify as zerorated supplies ONLY if such supply is to be used for the authorized operations by an SEZ unit or an SEZ Developer. 5. The Bill now proposes that in the event of non-realization of export proceeds within the timeframe prescribed under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, the registered person exporting goods without payment of tax will have to repay the refund received along with interest in respect of such export. Interestingly, the proposed amendment applies to export without payment of tax and does not apply in respect of export done on payment of IGST. 6. The scope of self-assessment tax and the related recovery proceedings has been enlarged. With

the proposed amendment, recovery proceedings could be initiated self-assessed tax as disclosed in the statement of outward supply (GSTR 1) does not correspond with the liability declared in the GST Return (ie, GSTR 3B). With this amendment, the Department would now be in a position to initiate recovery proceedings without resorting to the adjudication process where the tax liability in the GSTR 1 is more than the amounts declared in the GSTR 3B. In another measure to check tax evasion, which could also turn into a haven for corruption, the Commissioners power of provisional attachment has been further enhanced in cases of self-assessment, provisional assessment, and scrutiny of returns. Further, the powers of provisional attachment can now be done in respect of assets of any other person retaining the benefit of unlawful transaction for which penalty is prescribed under section 122 of the Act. 7. Currently, the GST Act provides that if recovery and penalty proceedings are initiated on the

main notice (ie, the supplier), the related proceedings against all other co-notices shall stand deemed to be concluded if the penalty proceedings against the supplier are concluded. The Finance Bill has proposed an amendment to delink the penalty proceedings on the main noticee and the other conoticees. Given the sleuth of amendments that were carried out on both the direct and indirect tax front, I ask myself this question – Is India still a tax-friendly jurisdiction? To me, the copper-bottomed response – A definite NO. I do hope that the Government would bring in necessary safeguards to avoid the arbitrary and untrammeled exercise of power. In my recent interaction with the Department, the arrogance on their part is indeed visible apart from being brazen. While there is no doubt that tax evasion should be checked and the errant punished, I would also urge the Government to ensure that in the event of an arbitrary exercise of power, the concerned officials are punished in the same measure 

The whole travel was dreamlike – glided along one after another with pleasant surprises, breath-taking sceneries, adventurous excitements, serene nature and at last to a relaxing abode called Vythiri Village resort. Before I tell you what this spectacular resort had in store for me, let me tell you how spellbound I was with the mesmerizing beauty of this lush green enchanting district – Wayanad. For a travel-enthusiast like me, this trip was sensational due to the amazing locales, scenic destinations and a thrilling smooth drive to the resort I was traveling to. You wouldn’t want to close your eyes even for a minute, and surprisingly I was so refreshed when I reached Vythiri Village resort. I had heard a lot about this place

from my friends and colleagues, and decided to book this resort itself this time. My expectations were not put down – the gatekeepers were so obliging and thoughtfully explained way to the reception. I was welcomed at the door step with a very refreshing welcome drink with a wide courteous smile. The reception area was so woody that you wouldn’t feel that you entered a building. The check-in formalities were smooth, the staff was helpful enough to help me fill in the forms and took my luggage into the room I was assigned to. The understanding staff didn’t want to hold me up and urged me into the room so that I can freshen up after a long journey in. A van carried me from the lobby through the wilderness into my pool villa, as it was situ-

ated away from the main building. I had a glance at their website when I booked rooms - but the real experience was indeed incredible. The villa was so quietly cozy with lovely wooden interiors. The rooms were 2000 sq ft spacious with a two bedroom and a private sitting area, and the pool inside was absolutely gorgeous – just enough for me to sink and dissolve in all the travel-lag. I got outside to take a stride to the restaurant for lunch. The nocturnal chorus you’d hear by the singing insects is heard here even in the afternoon. I was really hungry after a long journey, and I saw a sumptuous buffet ready when I reached the lovely restaurant SpiceBowl. It was situated at the crown of the magnificent atrium. There was a stage in the middle, which later I realized was for various theatricals, musicals and performances to be played. I

am usually finicky with the cuisines as I am an ardent foodie – but just like the breath-taking nature, Vythiri Village’s refreshingly fresh taste took me by surprise. I had a small talk with the very friendly attendant and she told me that all the greens are farmed in the backyard which gives the vegetables and spread a distinct flavour. I had a sumptuous delicious meal, with a soothing instrumental playing in the background. I was then told by the staff to come back to the atrium at 7.30pm to enjoy a stunning musical extravaganza. It seems that every weekend they have several ethnic and other performances scheduled to entertain their guests. There are a lot of exciting and adventurous trekking points in Wayanad. I was told that the resort arranges trips to all the

nearby attractions like pookode lake, banasura sagar dam, edakkal caves, muthanga wildlife sanctuary, tea museum etc. It was mentioned on their brochure as well. Even though they caringly offered the van, I wanted to take the lovely stroll back to my villa and had a relaxing quick siesta. I had heard of the beautiful hanging bridge at the resort and was planning to have a look at that in the evening. The courteous driver drove me around the winding tea plantations, explained vividly about other different scenic spots that I can come back and visit during my stay. From far I saw that gigantic structure and yes, it was indeed just stunning as I’d heard of. The hanging bridge looked like it was a portal which took you to another world. I so wanted to step on it as fast as I can, I jumped out of the van. This was a striking piece of architecture and it took you across a serene tranquil stream of water, to the other side of the land. There is an enormous swimming pool when you look down and it looks darker than the sky’s hues. There are other activities like

archery, 12D cinema, paintball, fish spa, snooker and so on. My favourite was the ZipLine. It was awesome experience, the guide was very helpful, I zipped flew through the pleasant weather and spectacular scenery safely to the other side of the line. It was like flying amidst the tress like a real Tarzan! Evening we had a sensational musical night, had so much of fun, merry and dance in a long time. The dinner was again sumptuous with a large spread of cuisines and finger-licking desserts. I had a lovely sulaimani also which is my favourite in Kerala, as a final flourish before I hit the relaxing beds. I had one of the comforting sleeps of my life. The cicadas and crickets played a nature’s harmony for my ears while slept sound. The sun-dawn was mystic, with the birds chirping, leaves rustling in concord and the bright rays of the sun seeping into the room giving it a fairylike ambience. I woke up to an enchanting dawn, and decided to indulge more with a calming spa. The ancient Ayurveda indeed was a heal-

ing therapy, detoxifying, rejuvenating my body and mind. I felt much de-stressed and calm. This trip was proving to be one of the best ever of my life, so close to nature and my essence. I left Vythiri Village resort with a cleansed soul, refreshed and armoured to get back into the routinely hustle-bustles of the concrete jungle. I am for sure to come back to refuel myself and experience this ethereal mood again

The proportions are great as well. It isn’t too big from the outside, but it is wider and taller than something like a Tiguan All Space. The design flair carries on to the interiors as well. There is a square theme throughout, from the AC vents to the block pattern on the seats and even the steering wheel is somewhat of a square. Everything feels well-built and though most of it is hard plastic, it doesn’t feel cheap. The centre console is chunky and with the dashboard and door pads being quite thick, you feel cocooned in. The instrument console is digital and minimalistic and the tachometer is very difficult to read at times. The gear selector is an interesting shape and is easy to operate, while the paddles behind the steering feel

Sure, we have Renault, but most of their cars sold here are sourced from Romania. The C5 is a great start for the brand to show what they are capable of, before coming up with a new reasonably priced car later next year.

The rear seats are clever in the way that they are three individual seats that slide and recline independently of one another. While they are comfortable, the seats themselves are too contoured and two rear passengers will have to sit in their designated spots and not take up space in the middle. And even with the seats slid back, legroom is only average. A better arrangement would be if the seats could slide further back when you don’t need that luggage space. and 400Nm. Performance is strong and effortless and is delivered linearly. The engine is quite loud and though you don’t hear it thanks to the cabin insulation, it can get a bit thrashy when revved close to 4000rpm. It pulls everywhere in the rev range and the 8 speed Aisin gearbox is well suited for the characteristics of this car. You have various driving modes and choosing Sport isn’t necessary and nor is using the paddles. 0-100kmph is pretty quick taking only 9.7 seconds. It feels quite relaxed, masking speeds and feeling confident at highway speeds. If you have watched the advertisement for the C5, you would know the emphasis is on the suspension used. Citroen as a brand has always focussed on comfort, having come

up with the first all-wheel independent suspension in a production car, experimenting with a hydropneumatic system in the DS, and stuff like that. With such pedigree, it’s not surprising to see that the C5 can glide over anything. It can take a whole load of beating without transferring any of the shocks to the cabin. The suspension uses hydraulic bump stops to absorb rebound energy and make the wheels settle down quicker. With the focus on ride quality, handling isn’t very entertaining, but it isn’t bad either. The grip is very good and the steering is decent as well. There is a hint of body roll and it pitches under braking but in this class of vehicle, you don’t mind those. Raya and the Last Dragon tells the story of a young girl who must go on a quest to find a dragon in order to unite the five diverse clans of her fictional land of Kumandra. Raya and the Last Dragon is scheduled for a theatrical release on March 2021 by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film will also be simultaneously available on Disney+ with Premier Access.

The Girl on the Train

he Girl on the Train is a psychological thriller movie inspired by the 2015 novel by Paula Hawkins of the same name. This mystery thriller film is directed by Ribhu Dasgupta and is produced under the banner of Reliance Entertainment. Parineeti Chopra, will be seen playing the lead role, portraying the character Meera Kapoor. Aditi Rao Hydari, Avinash Tiwary and Kirti Kulhari are also seen in the movie playing pivotal roles. The Girl on the Train will take the audiences on a dark journey of a girl trying to piece together the reality.
