This past year, more than 2 million guests walked through our doors. Two million individual journeys, all intersecting in one extraordinary place. Union Station stands as a stunning example of Beaux-Arts architecture, defined by its grand scale and historic marble finishes that transport visitors to a bygone era. Over the past three years, the Station has embarked on an ambitious journey of restoration and preservation— paired with a renewed investment in artistic expression throughout the campus.
Numerous historic works have been carefully restored, while new installations have been thoughtfully introduced, creating a seamless blend of past and present. These curated pieces not only enhance the visual experience for guests but also reinforce Union Station’s legacy as a vibrant cultural hub. The result is a captivating environment where history and contemporary creativity coexist, inviting all who enter to engage with the artistry woven throughout the space. Visitors are encouraged to explore the many areas across the historic campus where art comes to life.
A LANDMARK OF IMAGINATION
Located in the newly named Rainen Family Plaza, "Journey to Wonder" is a monumental 28-foot-tall sculpture that celebrates the past, present, and future of Union Station. Made possible through the generosity of Mike and Kathy Rainen and their family, the installation serves as both a visual landmark and a dynamic gathering space.
Created by Kansas City artists Chris Duh and Ramon Olivera, the sculpture features 30 stylized elements—including Union Station’s iconic clock, a railroad locomotive, and symbolic references to science, space, and exploration. Five kinetic components move with the wind, complemented by integrated lighting and audio features that bring the piece to life. "Journey to Wonder" now stands as an inspiring focal point for visitors of all ages, especially student groups, offering a place to gather, reflect, and be inspired.

DEPARTURE
Now publicly displayed for the first time, "Departure" is a striking large-format oil painting gifted to Union Station by Kansas City arts philanthropists and longtime supporters Sharon and John Hoffman, along with their children, Matt Hoffman and Lynn Hoffman Carlton.
Created in 1999 by noted American artist Lawrence Gipe, the work adds both visual and historical depth to the Station’s growing art collection. The Hoffman family’s connection to Union Station dates back decades— Sharon served as Founder and President of Friends of Union Station in 1986, and John, deeply committed to historic preservation, was among the original board members when Science City opened in 1999. World Cup – Welcoming the World
As Kansas City and the surrounding region prepare to welcome the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Union Station is proud to serve as a central hub for this global moment. In 2025, Union Station was honored to welcome World Cup KC as a new tenant, selected as the official location for the region’s Volunteer Headquarters. From this central downtown location, more than 6,000 volunteers will be trained, organized, and equipped to support visitors from around the globe. Union Station’s role in this effort reflects its continued commitment to community engagement and its legacy as a gathering place for moments of global significance. Music Lives On
Thanks to a generous donation from Dr. Kimberly Beatty Chancellor of Metropolitan Community College, a new baby grand piano now fills Union Station with the sound of music. Positioned as a striking centerpiece in the historic Grand Hall, the piano represents a meaningful partnership between two institutions with more than a century of shared history.

Union Station Stories Expansion – KC Streetcar
The newest addition to Union Station Stories, "Connecting Kansas City – Past and Future", celebrates the rich history and continued evolution of the Kansas City streetcar system. Spanning more than 1,100 square feet; the exhibit offers a historic timeline tracing the development of this vital mode of transportation.
From horse-drawn carriages of the 19th century to today’s modern electric streetcars—and the recent expansion connecting downtown to UMKC and the Country Club Plaza—the exhibit highlights how transit has grown alongside the city itself.

Union Station’s Regnier Extreme Screen Theatre proudly hosted the premiere screening of "Sarah’s Oil", a film from Amazon MGM Studios based on the remarkable true story of Sarah Rector. As the only movie theatre in downtown Kansas City—and uniquely located along the streetcar line—the Regnier Extreme Screen Theatre continues to serve as a premier destination for cinematic experiences. Its 2025 first-run lineup included major releases such as Disney’s "Snow White", "Lilo & Stitch", and Taylor Swift’s "Life of a Showgirl", further enhancing Union Station’s role as a hub for entertainment and culture.

Transformational Grant
A transformational $1 million grant from the Sunderland Foundation is supporting a significant preservation and renovation project for Union Station’s 1940s-era Grand Plaza restrooms. This investment ensures that one of the Station’s historic spaces is thoughtfully restored while meeting the expectations of modern visitors.
As Kansas City prepares to welcome local, national, and international guests for the 2026 World Cup, this project marks another important step in enhancing the overall visitor experience. Designed by PGAV to complement the Station’s historic character, the renovated restrooms evoke the glamour of a bygone era— offering guests the feeling of stepping into a beautifully preserved time capsule.

Art in the City – Where STEAM Comes to Life
Science City launched its first-ever "Art in the City" event on March 1, bringing creativity to the forefront and firmly putting the “A” back in STEAM. Guests explored collaborative, hands-on art experiences highlighting a variety of styles—including street art, clay, jewelry-making, and papermaking.
Generously supported by Hallmark Kaleidoscope, Art in the City invited visitors of all ages to discover the intersection of art and science, sparking curiosity and creativity in a fun, engaging environment.
Science Without Barriers
With support from the PNC Foundation, Science City expanded its reach through the launch of the PNC Discovery Lab mobile vehicle, part of a $1 million Grow Up Great grant. This innovative program brings early learning opportunities directly to underserved communities on both sides of the state line, removing transportation barriers and providing interactive, hands-on STEM programming to young learners who might otherwise lack access.
Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair
Union Station proudly hosted the 74th annual Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair, featuring 375 projects from 438 students. Four finalists advanced to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Columbus, Ohio, where three earned top honors, highlighting the region’s dedication to fostering innovation and scientific achievement.

Light Lab – Battle of the Brains
Science City’s newest exhibit, "Light Lab", opened in May thanks to the Battle of the Brains program, brought to Union Station by Burns & McDonnell. Students from Delta Woods Middle School saw their ideas realized in this nearly 3,100-square-foot exhibit, which features nine interactive zones exploring the science and creativity of light, energy, and the electromagnetic spectrum— demonstrating how light shapes our daily lives.
Since its inception, Battle of the Brains has engaged more than 30,000 students and produced eight permanent, million-dollar exhibits. Innovation continues: Tonganoxie Middle School’s concept, Mechanical Madness: The Science of Cars, will become the ninth exhibit, scheduled to open in Spring 2027.
Girls in STEM
In January, Science City welcomed nearly 400 girls for the annual Expanding Your Horizons event. Designed to spark curiosity about STEM careers, the program featured 20 hands-on workshops and a keynote presentation by Marsha Skoczek, Director of the Geoscience Academy in the Olathe School District.
In November, the Girl Scouts of Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri hosted their annual Live STEAM event at Science City. Nearly 200 girls explored Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics through interactive workshops and activities. The program was supported by Terracon, helping Science City engage the next generation of innovators.

Pottery Under the Stars
In August, the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium hosted its first-ever "Pottery Under the Stars", led by Caroline Meeks of EPIC Arts Clay Studio. Guests explored how cultures across time have immortalized their fascination with the stars in clay and created their own pinch pots to take home. Programs like this invite new audiences to connect with Science City’s immersive, intergalactic experiences.
Titanic: An Immersive Voyage
In November, Union Station welcomed "Titanic: An Immersive Voyage", an exhibition that captivated generations with more than 200 authentic artifacts, life-sized room recreations, and a fully immersive virtual reality experience. Guests explored the story of the “Ship of Dreams” and the lives of its passengers in a uniquely engaging way.

Army, Navy and Marines 250th Celebration
Union Station proudly honored the 250th anniversaries of the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps with a series of free public events. Guests experienced flag-raising ceremonies, historical reenactments, model displays, military vehicles, and more—offering meaningful opportunities to reflect on service and sacrifice.
Presented in partnership with the Association of the United States Army, the Greater Kansas City Council of the Navy League of the United States, the KC Chamber, and Union Station. The celebration brought the community together in recognition of this historic milestone.

Spring Break Blast & Summer of Celebration
When school is out, Science City is in session. More than 40,000 guests took part in seasonal programming during Spring Break Blast and the Summer of Celebration.
Visitors enjoyed a variety of limited-time activations, including Ninja Warrior inflatables, Barnyard Breakout, Rocket Science, and more—creating memorable, hands-on experiences for families throughout the region. These programs were made possible through the generous support of Renewal by Andersen, helping ensure accessible fun for all.
Big Impact, Bigger Purpose
In partnership with Thrivent and Happy Bottoms, Union Station achieved an official Guinness World Records title by constructing the world’s largest diaper cake—made up of more than 87,525 diapers.
Built in our Grand Plaza as part of "The Science of Guinness World Records" exhibition, presented by Thrivent, the installation combined creativity with community impact. Following the event, all diapers were distributed to partner agencies, supporting approximately 6,000 families each month and reinforcing Union Station’s commitment to meaningful community engagement.

Building Lighting that Captures Hearts – “TS12”
For more than 110 years, Union Station has stood as an iconic landmark in the Kansas City skyline. Today, its state-of-the-art LED lighting system—enhanced through five upgrades over the past 25 years—can display an unlimited palette of colors, transforming the building into a powerful canvas for storytelling.
In recent years, these dynamic light displays have captured not only the spirit of the local community but also the attention of audiences around the world. Illuminating the Station for holidays, major events, and meaningful moments, the lighting program has become a defining expression of Kansas City’s identity.

In 2025 alone, Union Station executed more than 100 unique lighting displays, reflecting both local pride and national moments. This awareness and responsiveness have helped build a strong following and deep appreciation for the Station’s exterior light shows.

Holiday Reflections Walk-Thru Village Presented by CPKC
For the sixth consecutive year, Holiday Reflections transformed Union Station into a festive destination, welcoming more than 165,000 guests throughout the holiday season. Spanning 27,000 square feet, the experience featured dazzling lights, twinkling ornaments, and beautifully decorated trees—creating a magical environment for visitors of all ages.
New additions in 2025 included a peppermint twist slide, a singing snowman, a whimsical “word” tree, an expanded gingerbread village, and an enhanced Petticoat Lane display—bringing fresh energy to a beloved tradition. Guests were transported back to a nostalgic vision of historic downtown Kansas City, where the charm of the past seamlessly blended with the vibrancy of the present.
Union Station continues to honor its history while creating meaningful experiences that inspire lasting memories for generations to come.

Scholarships: Making a Difference by Expanding Access
Union Station Kansas City has long been committed to ensuring that everyone in our community can experience Science City and Union Station's world-class touring exhibitions. Through dedicated fundraising efforts—including the Titanic Opening Gala—we continue to expand access for those who might not otherwise be able to attend.
Through these efforts, $40,000 was added to the scholarship fund through gala ticket sales and sponsorships. In 2025, Science City welcomed more than 15,000 students through a variety of scholarship programs, opening the door to hands-on learning and discovery for thousands of young minds.
Music with a Mission
Fans around the world mourned the loss of legendary musician Ozzy Osbourne in July. In tribute, the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium hosted special showings of "Laser Ozzfest," celebrating his iconic music and cultural impact.
These events also served a greater purpose—bringing the community together to give back. Half of all proceeds were donated to the Parkinson’s Foundation Heartland Chapter, resulting in more than $4,000 raised to support those affected by Parkinson’s disease.
First Experiences, Lasting Impact
For 150 high school refugee students, a visit to Union Station Kansas City marked a meaningful milestone—their first school field trip as Americans, and for many, their first field trip ever.
Students attended Holiday Reflections and a screening of "Elf," immersing themselves in our holiday traditions while building community and connection. Representing 40 countries and speaking 24 different languages, these students used the experience not only to celebrate the season, but also to strengthen their language skills and deepen their sense of belonging.

Teachers were then able to capture those moments learned at Science City with photos to use as recall activities, asking children what they did in the photos, discussing the science components, and recreating experiences with similar materials in our classrooms. We also extended the concepts and showcased them on a Science Night so our families could then participate in learning experiences as well. We are thankful for being able to utilize Science City as a resource for our program.”
