1. WHAT TO KNOW
The Ospreys saw major improvements on offense in Orlando last week with eight shots on goal after only having one shot on goal in their season opener against Georgia State...junior transfer Angus Taylor has been the catalyst on offseason for the Ospreys through two games, as he leads the team with four total shots and scored the first goal of the season against UCF... preseason All-Conference selection LJ Estes joins fellow captains Bendeguz Burka and Herbie Steigelman as the only three offensive players to play all 180 minutes so far on the year...sixth-year senior Padraic Gilley has shown out in both games with three saves to show for against Georgia State and UCF...19 different players have seen playing time in the first two games, with 13 having at least one start and nine starting both matches.
2. SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
FIU will enter this game with a 2-1 record after playing all three games against top-25 ranked teams. They also played an exhibition match against an ASUN opponent, Stetson, and won, 7-0. Last season, the Panthers finished their campaign with a 12-4-2 record with wins against three top-15 teams, including a 4-1 win against No. 1-ranked Marshall, who were the defending champions at the time. They finished their year dropping the opening games of the C-USA Tournament and the NCAA Tournament to No. 10 Kentucky and Wake Forest. Stephen Afrifa, Matteo Gasperoni and Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro were three players that were named to the AAC Preseason All-Conference team. Afrifa, who was FIU’s leading scorer in 2021, was also named to the United Soccer Coaches Watch List. So far this season, four different players have scored goals for the Panthers with Afrifa leading the way with three scores. Five different players also have an assist on those six total goals.
3. SERIES HISTORY
- The Ospreys are 3-4-2 all-time against FIU with a 2-2-1 record against them on the road. - In their past three matchups, UNF has gone 1-0-2 with their win occurring on the road against a top-25 Panthers team during the spring 2021 season. - Bryson Smith scored the lone goal for the Ospreys in last season’s 1-1 draw. - Their last loss to FIU on the road was during the 2017 season. - UNF and FIU have played every season since 2011 with this being the eighth game played in Miami, Fla.
