Letter from the Chair

Dear Colleagues, Partners, and Friends,

As we reflect on the past year, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the extraordinary work accomplished across the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Our faculty, staff, trainees, and collaborators have continued to demonstrate resilience, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to excellence in patient care, education, and research. This year, we advanced our mission in meaningful ways. Our diagnostic services remained a cornerstone of clinical excellence, supporting thousands of patients with timely, accurate, and compassionate care. Our research enterprise continued to grow, with new grants, publications, and collaborations that are shaping the future of pathology and laboratory medicine. And our educational programs spanning medical students, residents, fellows, and continuing education remained vibrant and impactful, preparing the next generation of leaders in our field. We also made important strides in fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment. Through department-wide initiatives and individual efforts, we are building a culture where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their best. Looking ahead, we are excited about the opportunities on the horizon. From embracing new technologies in digital pathology and AI, to expanding our translational research efforts, to deepening our community partnerships—we are poised to lead with purpose and vision

Erica Sparkenbaugh, PhD joined as an Assistant Professor. She brings with her the Sparkenbaugh Lab, which aims to investigate the interplay between the coagulation cascade and inflammation in animal models of disease

Xianwen Yi, PhD joined as a Research Assistant Professor He returns to Dr Maeda's lab, where he previously worked and researched atherosclerosis using genetic animal models. Jeremy Wang, PhD joined as an Associate Professor His current work focuses on using lowcost nano-pore RNA and DNA-sequencing to enable comprehensive molecular characterization of pediatric acute leukemias and solid tumors in low-resource settings where traditional diagnostic infrastructure is unavailable.

Amanda Strickland, MD joined as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Surgical Pathology and her research focuses on biomarkers of gynecologic malignancies, particularly endometrial neoplasia

Anne Bartels, MD joined as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Surgical Pathology. Her research focuses on clinicopathologic correlation studies related to women ’ s health, with a particular emphasis on breast cancer

Steve Hur, PhD joined as a Research Assistant Professor He studies studies the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which coagulation/fibrinolytic proteins contribute and regulate metabolic processes to regulate the development of metabolic pathologies such as obesity, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic

Hannah Atkins, DVM, PhD, DACVP on received the American College of Veterinary Pathology President's Award!

Alisa Wolberg, PhD was honored with the J. Evan Sadler Lectureship at Washington University at St. Louis for her life-long contributions to the field of vascular biology.

Xianwen Yi, PhD received $25,000 in boost funding from the University to support his proposal to improve diabetic nephropathy via regulating metabolic reprogramming using new metabolic mouse models

Lucia Grandison, PBTS graduate student, on received a predoctoral fellowship with the American Heart Association

Ashley Crosby, MD, clinical fellow mentored by Dr Danielle Maracaja, who received the Hematology Inclusion Pathway Award from the American Society of Hematology and presented her work “Monocyte Distribution Width as a Marker of Res Cell Alloimmunization” at the annual meeting in December.

Steve Hur, PhD was awarded the NORC Pilot and Feasibility Award Awards are designed for researchers to collect preliminary data that supports a grant application for independent research support and published work The UNC NORC will award pilot grants of up to $40,000 in direct costs each.

Kadri Kangro, PhD, working in the lab of Alisa Wolberg, PhD, was awarded the 2024 Aniara Diagnostica Coagulation Research Grant for $10,000

Danielle Samulski, MD won a $500 grant from the Intersociety Council for Pathology Information (ICPI) to benefit the Pathology Interest Group.

Jiandong Liu, PhD was awarded a grant through the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) for his work on Carm1-mediated transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of cardiomyocyte maturation

Ilana Galex, MLAS, DVM, DACLAM received a $5,000 award through the American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners to host a summer fellowship for a veterinary student interested in laboratory animal medicine. She also received a grant from the American Association For Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) for "The Effects of Various Oral Gavage Needles on Clinical and Welfare Outcomes in C57BL/6 Mice"

Matthew Flick, PhD received a subcontract from Versiti on a DOD grant for "Controlling Thromboembolism After Polytrauma with an RNA Therapy Against Excess Fibrinogen" and a grant from the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) for "Novel mechanisms to limit thrombosis by decreasing fibrinogen or suppressing fibrin matrix formation" He also received another year of funding from UVA "Novel mechanism underlying fibrinogen biogenesis in the endoplasmic reticulum", an NIH funded project Congratulations Dr Flick!

Alisa Wolberg, PhD received a grant renewal from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston for "Using genomics and functional biology to understand fibrinogen and factor XIII and their effects on thrombotic disease" a collaborative work with Dr Alanna Morrison of UT Houson

Yanhan Dong, PhD on receiving a Career Development Award from the American Heart Association.

Feng Li, PhD received another year of funding for her grant "Benefits of nicotinamide in placental development and in preeclamsia" from the NIH

Timothy Nichols, MD received a subcontract from Indiana University on NIH grant for "Immunocytokine therapy for immune modulation in hemophilia".

Danielle Samulski, MD and Aaron Dobbins received a grant from the American Society for Clinical Pathology to benefit the department's Pathology Interest Group for medical students

Melissa Miller, PhD will receive the Career Achievement Award at the Pan American Society for Clinical Virology (PASCV) annual meeting in May 2025

Yara Park, MD was selected as the recipient of the 2025 Presidential Award at the annual American Society for Aphresis conference

Jessie Feudale, MHA was selected as the 2025 Society of '67 APEX Fellow award by AAPath

Alina Iuga, MD received another year of funding from NCSU for "Development of an INSPIRE System for the Treatment of Inoperable Liver Tumors", an NIH funded project.

Brooke Bollinger, a trainee investigator in Comparative Medicine, worked with mentor, Dr. Morika Williams, to secure a grant for their project titled "Drug Stability of Transdermal Buprenorphine Solution (TBS) following Transfer to Multi-dose Containers" Congratulations to graduate student Jenny Coelho (mentor, Dr Yuri Fedoriw) for being the recipient of the Graduate Fellow Award in Basic Science from the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center!
