Dr. Lori Thomas was featured in the August "Inside UNC Charlotte" Faculty Spotlight for her research on the "housing-first" approach to homelessness in Mecklenburg County. Congratulations Lori!
Dr. Annelise Mennicke was featured in an NBC news program on August 25, 2017 for her research on sexual assault for the past seven years. She was noted in the article stating that while devices such as the wearable intrepid smart sticker can be helpful tools, it's going to take more to put an end to sexual violence. The tool connects with a smartphone app that can contact five people in the case of an emergency. Dr. Mennicke said, "If we just shifted from how to protect a victim to how to equip a bystander, I think we could make some real progress to keep these crimes from occurring."

Faculty Highlights continued The University organized events the week of September 22, 2017 to support building trust, equity, and opportunity in the Charlotte community. The Community Breakfast and Social Justice Fair was held on Monday, September 18, 2017. Professor Sonyia Richardson facilitated the dialogue. Did you know‌. Faculty Highlights continued Dr. Diana Rowan attended the 3rd Annual Social Work in Sports Symposium October 17 -18, 2017 in Dallas, TX. Dr. Susan McCarter served on the panel of the Fall Community Forum titled, “New South City, Old South Rules: Charlotte’s School to Prison Pipeline.” The event was held on November 16, 2017 at The YWCA. Other panelist included the Co-Chair of OneMECK, Program Director of Communities in Schools, and Assistant Chief, CMPD.
The Annual Council on Social Work Education Conference was held in Dallas, Texas on October 17-22. 2017. Presenters attending included Andrew Reynolds, Othelia Lee, Susan McCarter, and Laneshia Conner. Other attendees were Schnavia Hatcher, Amy Peters, Susan Boyd, Roger Suclupe, and Kristen Scarlett Greene.
Student Highlights Spring 2017 Congratulations to the following students who will be the Communication Across the Curriculum Consultants for the spring 2018 semester:
Paulina Rivera Amy Conner Erin Coggins Abraham Arias Communication Across the Curriculum (CxC) works with faculty, aca- demic partners, and administration to engage, support, and celebrate the use of communication to enhance teaching and learning. Stu- dent Communication Consultants are peer consultants who provide communication support to other students by assisting the students in navigating the enhanced curriculum. The Consultants act as engaged reader/listener, providing informed, constructive criticism directed toward the argumentation, analysis, organization, clarity, and style of papers and presentations. Dr. Suzanne Boyd serves as the SSW CxC Coordinator.

Community Engagement Spring 2017 Campus Community Pauses to Observe Eclipse Tuesday, August 22, 2017
The University Press released an announcement on September 21, 2017 that the Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) grant awarded by the US Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has selected the School of Social Work as a recipient. Dr. Kulkarni has been awarded a total of $1.8 million over four years to develop and support advanced year integrated health/behavioral health field placements for MSW students. This award is in addition to the $2.1 million HRSA grant the School of Social Work was awarded in 2016. Dr. Annelise Mennicke and Dr. Shanti Kulkarni were the lead panelists for the Charlotte Girl Panel on October 26, 2017.

Alumni Highlights MSW 2009 Alumni Angie Nance – Angie Vandenberg finds fulfillment in preparing UNCW students for future careers, and her passion for teaching and mentoring have not gone unnoticed. Selected as one of the 2017 Lecturers of the Year, Vandenberg says the recognition was a surprise and honor. “I consider it an honor to teach future social workers and help to bring them into the field,” said Vandenberg, who joined the university if 2012. Joey Honeycutt – MSW 2009 Graduate He will graduate in May 2018 from Duke Divinity School with a Masters of Divinity. He hopes to use this degree in conjunction with my MSW to serve people at the intersections of faith, trauma, and LGBTQ identity. Erin Goldstein – MSW 2009 Graduate Married in 2014 and my wife and I had our son Jude in 2016. Sheena Beach – MSW 2015 Graduate Works as an outpatient therapist at Family First Community Services in Charlotte. Family First provides in home skill building and community guide services for the IDD population and has current openings.
