Multi-Day Event International Scavenger Hunt Virtual Event | Monday, November 16 – Wednesday, November 18, Asynchronous Join the UNC Charlotte International Students and Scholar Office (ISSO) for an international themed virtual scavenger hunt. Students will receive access to a self-paced scavenger hunt beginning on Monday, November 16, 2020 running through Wednesday, November 18, 2020. Everyone who completes the scavenger hunt before Thursday, November 19 will be entered for a chance to win a prize! Winners will be chosen at random at the ISSO Virtual Coffee Hour scheduled on Thursday, November 19, 2020. The Scavenger Hunt link will open on Monday, November 16, 2020.

75 Years Later: Race, Law, and the Mass Incarceration of Japanese Americans During World War II Virtual Event | 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM Join the Department of Languages and Culture Studies for 75 Years Later: Race, Law, and the Mass Incarceration of Japanese Americans During World War II, funded by the UNC Charlotte Chancellor’s Diversity Grant. Dr. Emily Anderson, Project Curator at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) in Los Angeles, California, will present on the topic of mass incarceration of Japanese American citizens during World War II in the United States. The mass incarceration of people of Japanese ancestry during World War II represents a severe violation of the civil rights of an entire community and an egregious act of systemic and legalized racism. This presentation will introduce the historical and legal background— how anti-Asian racism and anti-immigrant activists on the West Coast devoted decades to limiting opportunities for Japanese immigrants and their American children—that made the wartime incarceration possible. It will also address how this history and its aftermath remains relevant. Dr. Anderson is a Tokyo born-and-raised Japanese American with a PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has taught modern Japanese history at Washington State University, was a visiting research fellow in the New Zealand Asia Institute at the University of Auckland and currently curates the On My Honor: Scouting in American Concentration Camps exhibit at JANM. The Beauty of Chinese Characters: A Lecture on Chinese Culture Virtual Event | 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM Recognized as one of the most difficult languages to learn in the world, the challenge and beauty of the Chinese language lies in its unique written system of Chinese characters.
Dr. Ji’e Zheng, Adjunct Professor in the UNC Charlotte Confucius Institute, will compare Chinese and English writing systems and introduce the audience to the nature and value of Chinese characters. Participants will learn features of Chinese characters, such as the close relationship between form and meaning, the complex structure, and the cognition of the left and right brain when learning Chinese aracters. Participants will gain a unique perspective of Chinese culture, thinking, values and cultural ventions through the formation and intricate structures of Chinese characters.

Such skills include the ability to work in multicultural teams and in diverse contexts. Tuesday | November 17 From A to B: An Arabic Film Screening Virtual Event | 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Please join Dr. Noha Ghali, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Languages and Culture Studies, for the Arabic film virtual screening of From A to B. From A to B is a 2014 multilingual (Arabic and English) Emirati film written, directed, and produced by Ali F. Mostafa. Mostafa’s work has gained recognition with awards for Best Emirati Film in 2006, Best Emirati Filmmaker by the Dubai International Film Festival in 2007, and 2010’s Young Filmmaker of the Year by Digital Studio Magazine. In the film, three estranged childhood friends travel on a road trip from Abu Dhabi to Beirut in memory of their lost friend.
