UNIVERSITY OF NORTH ALABAMA The University of North Alabama, established in 1830 as LaGrange College, became, in 1872, the first state-supported teachers college south of the Ohio Riverand one of the first co-ed colleges in the nation. UNA has developed into a regional university providing quality educational opportunities for students from the three-state region of Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. North Alabama’s academic role has expanded through the years. Bachelor’s degrees are offered in majors in the colleges of arts and sciences, business, education and nursing and allied health. Pre-Professional preparation for medicine, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, pharmacy, law, agriculture and forestry, engineering, veterinary medicine, medical technology and other allied health professions is offered. Various master’s degrees are offered in the arts and sciences, edication and business fields. North Alabama was the first major university to offer a four-year degree program in commercial music. Majors have interned in record industry offices in Nashville, New York, Los Angeles, London, Stockholm, and nearby Muscle Shoals. That program has since been expanded with the development of the UNA Entertainment Industry Center and the addition of an entertainment industry management major. UNA is one of 11 schools nationwide offering an undergraduate degree in industrial hygiene. Foreign language, nursing, business, and science students also have opportunities to study abroad. Numerous faculty and staff members hold positions of distinction in various national, regional and state professional organizations. Many have written books and/or published articles in newspaper, magazines and professional journals. The Journal of Legal Economics is published at UNA. Various centers have been established at North Alabama to serve its constituency. Operated by faculty and staff, they give undergraduate and graduate students opportunities for research and public services. These centers include the Occupational and Environmental Health Laboratory. Its scientific research has attracted national and international attention in the health field. The Geographic Research Center, in cooperation with the National Geographic Society, has increased the profile of geography in the state and has opened doors for students to have hands-on participation 4
in maping and demographics research for various governmental agencies. Science faculty and students teach and study marine biology-related courses at Dauphin Island Sealab near Mobile, Alabama. North Alabama also houses the Northwest Alabama Education Research and Inservice Center, which provides inservice training for elementary and secondary educators in a six-county region. UNA has the only state university-operated kindergarten and grammar school, which affords education students a professional development laboratory experience in teaching. Serving a nine-County region, the Small Business Development Center provides information, counseling and assistance to small businesses or to people planning to start small businesses. The Rare and Endangered Species Research Center personnel are conducting research on several endangered species in the region. The Wellness Research and Service Center studies and develops wellness, exercise, nutrition, stress management, health education counseling and environmental support programs. The University of North Alabama works closely with various southern universities and many local, state and federal agencies on a myriad of projects and activities. Supporting the faculty are the extensive resources of the Collier Library system, which is also a federal records depository. It is computerized and linked into various
library loan research networks. Collier Library also houses several collections, including the television and film scripts and other works of actors Dr. George Lindsey and Dr. Ernest Borgnine. UNA has developed a national following in recent years with the development of the George Lindsey/UNA Television and Film Festival, which attracts several industry luminaries to camous. UNA students excel in academics, student activities and athletics. Often they are recognized nationally for their achievements in specific areas. In recent years , football and basketball teams have won national championships. UNA is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The colleges of business, education and nursing are nationally accredited, while several departments in the College of Arts and Sciences are nationally accredited. The University of North Alabama’s alumni are equally successful. Among them are a Pultizer Prize winner for literature and one for editorial cartooning, two Alabama governors, a Texas governor, numerous members of the U.S. Congress, thousands of educators, national business and industry CEOs and internationally-renowed sculpter, a National Geographic photographer and special assistant to the President of the United States.
UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT & BOARD President William G. Cale, Jr. Dr. William G. Cale, Jr., became the President of the University of North Alabama on January 15, 2005, four days after the marking of the 175th anniversary of the school’s founding. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he came to UNA from Penn State-Altoona, where he was the Chief Executive Officer and Dean. Previously, Dr. Cale was the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. He has also served in administrative roles such as dean and department head. His academic specialty is ecology, which he has used extensively in research projects. In Altoona, Dr. Cale served on the Board of the Altoona-Blair County Chamber of Commerce and the Altoona-Blair County Development Corporation. He served on the Board of the Texas Energy Museum and several other boards. He has been an active member of numerous academic and civic organizations.
Dr. Cale is widely published in professional journals. He co-authored the book, Ivy images: A Photographic History of Penn State Altoona.
Dr. Cale and his wife Betty Jean live in the President’s Home on campus.

HEAD COACH CHRIS WALKER
Former Lee University assistant coach Chris Walker is set to begin his first season as head women’s soccer coach at the University of North Alabama. He is the fourth head coach in the 16year history of the UNA women’s soccer program. Walker, a Lee graduate and former player on the men’s soccer team there, served as an assistant coach with the Lee women’s team for the last three years and helped lead the Flame to two NAIA National Championships. “Chris is a person of outstanding character and is an outstanding coach,” Linder said. “He has recruited internationally and domestically in expanded regions from our current footprint and we feel he can lead our program to continued success.” At UNA, Walker follows Graham Winkworth who posted a 111-81-8 record with the Lions over the last 10 years and led UNA to four consecutive NCAA Division II Regional Tournaments from 2009-12. Winkworth resigned his position at UNA in December to become the head coach at the University of South Alabama. Walker had a successful playing career for the Lee Flames and was an integral part of the squad that qualified for the NAIA national tournament in 2005. He was a captain of the Flames squad and
earned all-conference honors on three different occasions. He graduated from Lee in December 2006 with a B.A. in Business Administration and then served as a graduate assistant for the Lee men’s team in 2006-07. In 2008, Walker moved to Tennessee Tech where he worked as the top assistant and finished his M.A. in Education in July 2008. He was also working as a director of coaching at Westfields Soccer Club in Indiana before returning to Lee in 2010 as assistant coach with the women’s program. Over the last three seasons at Lee, the school has had the best women’s soccer program in the history of the NAIA. Winning three Southern States Athletic Conference regular season and tournament title and back-to-back national championships (2010-11). Lee now holds the highest winning percentage in NAIA national tournament play in the history of the organization. Lee also went all three seasons without a loss in league play. Also during Walker’s time as an assistant at Lee, in addition to the numerous individual awards earned on the field by Flame players, the team carried at least a 3.3 grade point average all three years and was recognized by the NSCAA and NAIA as an Academic Team Scholar Award winner. Walker is married to former Lee University soccer player, Tiffany Cox Walker.

Chris McBride, a native of Prestwick, Scotland, joined the UNA staff in 2012 after one season as an assistant coach at Martin Methodist College. McBride helped the RedHawks to a 14-2-2 record that included a TranSouth Conference Championship, TranSouth Conference Tournament berth and a spot in the final 16 of the NAIA National Tournament. McBride is a 2010 graduate of Martin Methodist where he played four seasons for the Redhawks. During his collegiate career, he helped guide the RedHawks to a TranSouth conference Championship in 2008, TranSouth conference tournament Championship in 2009 and the Elite Eight of the 2009 National Tournament. He was a also a team captain as a junior and senior. McBride was a TranSouth scholar athlete three times, and a 2010 Academic All-America pick.In 2010 He received the Tom Read Academic award for the highest grade point average of a male athlete and the Royce Hughes Physical Education Non-Licensure award. McBride graduated Magna Kum Lade with a B.S in Physical Education and a minor in Biology. McBride has also helped coach the Alabama ODP. He holds a Scottish Youth F.A. level “E” and “D” License and NSCAA Level 1 and Level 2 in Goalkeeping and Adult.

Graduate Assistant Coach Amy Cochran, a native of Yorba Linda, Calif., joins the Lions coaching staff after an All-American career with Lee University. During her time at Lee, Cochran was a member of three straight NAIA national championship teams, four straight Southern States Athletic Conference championships. Individually she was a two-time first-team NAIA All – American and a two-time NAIA All-Scholar Athlete. “I am excited to add Amy to our coaching staff for the upcoming fall season,” said head coach Chris Walker. “Amy’s work rate, discipline and organization will be a big asset to our staff. She was a fantastic player, she always pulled the best out of the other players around her and I expect her to have no problems stepping into this coaching role straight away.” Cochran graduates this coming May as a Summa Cum Laude with a B.S in Business Administration and will start working on her MBA here at UNA.

The ProTurf field at the UNA Athletic Complex was part of a $1.25 million renovation. UNA is 33-8-1 on the turf and had a 16-match home winning streak from 2009-10

2013 UNA SOCCER PREVIEW EXPERIENCED LIONS BEGIN NEW ERA UNDER CHRIS WALKER The name of the head coach may have changed, but the expectations for the University of North Alabama women’s soccer program have not as the Lions enter the 2013 season with hopes of again competing for the Gulf South Conference champonship and earning a fifth straight NCAA Tournament berth. First-year head coach Chris Walker, who was an assistant on two NAIA national championship teams at Lee University, inherits a team with 13 returning lettermen and seven returning starters. In addition, he has added some prominent newcomers who should help keep the Lions in contention in the conference race. UNA returns three players who have earned All-GSC honors during their careers in forward Jennifer Osmond and defenders Ellis Hillman and Julia Osmond. Jennifer Osmond, a senior from Southampton, England, enters her final season at UNA ranked third in school history for career goals scored with 37. She has scored 10 or more goals in each of her three seasons with the Lions with 10, 16 and 11 respectively. Osmond has also assisted on another 21 goals for 95 career points. Hillman, a junior from Exmouth, England, is
a two-time All-GSC defender. Julia Osmond, twin sister of Jennifer, is a three-time All-GSC and All-South Region selection. Also back is sophomore Chloe Richards od Cornwall, England, who earned All-South Region and All-GSC Tournament honors as a freshman. The list of other returning starters includes sophomore defender Melanie Leonida, junior defender Chelsea Rial and sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Grace. Heading the list of newcomers at UNA are freshman Stacey Webber of Llanei, Wales, senior forward Abby Fannin of Pickerington, Ohio and junior goalkeeper Rachel Beninati of Jacksonville, Fla. Webber played in the Welsh Premier Women’s League and was a member of the Wales U19 National Team. Fannin was an offensive force at Tennessee Wesleyan and earned all-conference and NAIA All-American honors prior to transferring to UNA. Beninati earned all-conference honors as the starting goalkeeper at the University of North Florida before making the move to UNA.

2012 IN REVIEW The 2012 UNA women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament for the fourth consecutive year before closing the campaign with an overall 13-6-1 record. UNA finished tied for second in the Gulf South Conference regular season standings and also finished second in the GSC Tournament. The season marked the end of the collective careers of Chloe Roberts, Nikki Brown, Jo Chubb and Katie Crosby who helped lead UNA to a 65-18-3 record from 2009-12 that included the school’s first Gulf South Conference soccer title and first NCAA post-season appearances. The 2012 season also marked the end of Graham Winkworth’s 10-year coaching career with the Lions as he departed for a Division I position following the end of the year. Winkworth helped transform the Lions into a conference and regional power.

GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE Academic excellence, 46 National Championships and a leadership role in the NCA8’s Division II make the Gulf South Conference (GSC) something special. The GSC is a charter Division II member and enters its 43rd year as one of the premier conferences at any NCAA level. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to talk about athletics; when the meeting ended, a new league emerged—the Mid-South Conference—started by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history. It is that CEO-control and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 championships (football; men’s & women’s cross country, men’s & women’s soccer; volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, men’s & women’s tennis, men’s & women’s golf; softball and baseball) so bitterly contested in a collegial manner. From that point forward, the GSC has been giant steps ahead of the Division II pack. Dating back to 1997, the league has found neutral sites paying sizeable guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or -inspired legislation. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own new construction office space. But the crowning moment came in 2005-06, when the GSC debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package which included nine football games and its men’s & women’s basketball tournament finals. Add to that its web-TV show, “GSC Sports Weekly,” and the broadbanding of most of its championships and you can see why the GSC is a Conference paving the way into the 21st century. We take pride in our 48 National Team Championships in 13 sports and more than 100 regional titles, especially because there is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC student-athletes regularly earn Academic All-America. The Conference added two more Titles in 2012-13 with Valdosta State claiming its third football title and West Florida winning the league’s second women’s soccer crown. Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State were the charter members. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the GSC to football, won by Jacksonville
State. In 1971, the addition of Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State increased the membership to eight. The league opened an office in Hammond, LA, changed its name to the Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (now Northwestern State) joined in 1972 and two years later, NWLA left for Division I with SELA and Nicholls State following in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State, followed by West Georgia (1983). In 1991, Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members. An aggressive expansion under the guidance of new Commissioner Nate Salant resulted in 10 new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); AlabamaHuntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (MUW in 1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93 and Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, only to be replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 200203 season, decreasing the membership to 17. The Conference decreased to 15 teams in 2006-07 when Central Arkansas moved to Division I and Lincoln Memorial
made a geographically-based switch to the South Atlantic Conference, then 14 after Montevallo departed for the Peach Belt Conference. The GSC went away from divisional play after the 2010-11 season when its six Arkansas members broke away, dropping the membership to eight. The Conference did not wait long to implement an aggressive expansion plan which quickly bore fruit when the University of New Orleans was unanimously approved as its ninth member in June, 2011. UNO becomes a full member in the GSC in 2012-13 after limited participation in volleyball, cross country, golf and baseball in 2011-12. The GSC took another step in bolstering its membership after sponsoring the Division II applications of Union University (TN) and Shorter University (GA) which were accepted into the NCAA reclassifying process in July of 2011, and will enter the GSC process this fall. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough brought the GSC office to Birmingham. Current Commissioner, Nate Salant began his tenure in October, 1992. He is assisted by Assistant Commissioner for Media and Public Affairs Michael Anderson, Assistant Sports Information Director Albert “A.A.” Moore and Senior Woman Administrator Andrea Anderson. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. William Cale (North Alabama). Joining him on the executive committee are Vice-Chair Dr. Judith Bense (West Florida) and Past-Chair Dr. Beheruz Sethna (West Georgia). The Supervisors of Officials are Jeff Roberson (Football), John Caldwell (Basketball) and Mike Murphy (Basketball).
