Asalamualykum, Dear Esteemed parents/Guardians

we hope this message find you well.

➡"AND REMIND, FOR INDEED REMINDER BENEFITS THE BELIEVER'S"

Qur'an 51:55

WE Want to kindly share an important aspect of our faith as Muslims, so that it may be understood & respected within the school environment especially in the class rooms.

Islamic Guideline: Why Birthdays Are Not Celebrated in Islam

✨ Introduction

In Islam, every action we take should be guided by the teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah (the practices of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ). While birthdays are widely celebrated in many cultures, traditional,

Islamic teachings encourage Muslims to refrain from such celebrations.

PROVES

✨ 1. No Basis in Islam

Birthday celebrations were not practiced by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his companions, or the early generations of Muslims. Islam places high importance on following the Sunnah, and adding new religious practices is discouraged.

> “Whoever introduces into this affair of ours (Islam) something that is not from it, it is to be rejected.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim)

✨ 2. Imitating Non-Islamic Practices

Celebrating birthdays originated in non-Islamic cultures and religious traditions. Islam discourages Muslims from imitating the practices of other religions or cultures in ways that conflict with Islamic teachings.

> “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”

(Abu Dawood – Hasan hadith)

As Muslims, our religious teachings guide us to celebrate only the two major Islamic festivals:

Eid al-Fitr (at the end of Ramadan)

Eid al-Adha (during the Hajj season)

While we deeply value life, family, and community, birthday celebrations are not part of Islamic tradition. This is not due to lack of joy or gratitude, but because such celebrations were not practiced by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ or his companions, and are therefore considered religiously discouraged (bid'ah) by many scholars.

For this reason, our child does not participate in birthday-related activities, such as:

Singing "Happy Birthday"

Giving or receiving birthday cards/gifts

Attending birthday parties held in class

This decision is based on our sincere desire to raise our child according to our faith, and is not a reflection of judgment toward others who choose to celebrate.

Mutual Respect

We deeply appreciate the diversity in our school community and teach our children to respect different cultures and beliefs. At the same time, we kindly ask for your understanding and support in respecting our choice.

We are always happy to collaborate on inclusive alternatives during class celebrations (such as shared reading time, a fun craft, or cultural day) where everyone feels welcome.

If you ever have questions about our practices, we are more than happy to chat respectfully.

Thank you for your understanding and support in creating a school environment where all families feel included and respected.
