Apply to Michigan
→ admissions.umich.edu/apply
The University of Michigan is looking for students who are curious about new ideas, new people, and new experiences. Excellent grades are important, too.
All students must follow the same basic steps to apply to U-M. You must fill out and submit the Common Application at commonapp.org as well as the University of Michigan Questions.
APPLICATION PLANS & DEADLINES
Nov. 1: Early Decision (Binding)
Nov. 1: Early Action (Nonbinding)
Dec. 1: School of Music, Theatre & Dance
Feb. 1: Regular Decision (Nonbinding)
We encourage students to pick the application plan that is the best fit, considering when they will be ready to apply and if they are prepared to make a binding commitment to U-M.

Tests for Admission
SAT & ACT

U-M is test-optional for the 2026 application cycle. Students may submit SAT (U-M code: 1839) or ACT (U-M code: 2062) scores if they wish them to be considered.
TOEFL, MET, & IELTS
International students who may not be able to test are encouraged to submit any predictive and/or external examination or national examination; state, provincial, national, and international exams; or predicted results. → myumi.ch/MkzNP

Pursue Your Passions
DUAL APPLICATIONS
First-year applicants to SMTD, Stamps, and Taubman (Architecture only) are allowed to choose paths and majors that reflect their interests and individuality by applying to another U-M school/college at the same time. → myumi.ch/7eqe1
PREFERRED ADMISSION
Preferred Admission (PA) is a way for an applicant to indicate interest in later transferring to an upper-level program or the Ross School of Business. Students are first admitted to a first-year school or college and then evaluated for PA. If they are selected, they can later transfer into the upper-level program they applied to. Accepted students must meet prerequisites, which vary by program, during their first year at U-M to transfer to the upper-level program. → myumi.ch/ypN22
Fall 2025 Admitted Student Profile*
3.92
Average first-year GPA (unweighted 4.0 scale).
U-M students are intelligent, motivated, inquisitive, hardworking, open-minded, ambitious, and ready to be challenged.
GPA and test scores are considered within the context of a rigorous holistic review of a student’s application, which takes into consideration what opportunities and resources are currently available in the applicant’s high school and community.
For the 2026 application cycle, students will be considered whether or not they submit test scores.
High School Course Expectations
Ideally, students will have completed five units (full-year courses) during each of the four years. Students should elect Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, honors, enriched, and accelerated high school courses when appropriate and possible.

Paying for College
Given our academic strengths, high student retention and graduation rates, and the strong lifetime earning potential of our graduates, investing in a U-M education offers a bright future with many rewards. Please do not hesitate to contact Admissions and the Office of Financial Aid for help or more information. We’re here to help you Go Blue!
