New Sader Scholars Program Gives Taste of
Forty high-achieving students got a preview of college life at UMHB during the first Sader Scholars program this July.
“The goal of Sader Scholars is to give high school students a glimpse of what life is like at UMHB,” said Dr. Stephen Baldridge, dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences. “Through experiencing our world-class faculty, our beautiful campus, and life in Belton, we know they will fall in love with this place.”
The experience is designed to give students an opportunity to explore academics and student life, immerse themselves in college-level
s
coursework, engage in campus activities and introduce them to the vibrant community of UMHB. Through the program, 26 rising freshmen and 14 incoming high school seniors, were able to complete a three-hour class taught by UMHB's faculty and earned three transferable college credits. These classes were designed to incorporate hands-on, experiential learning both in and

Next-Level Chemistry
Chemistry Department Adds New Equipment to Enhance Research
While most chemistry majors graduate with a satisfactory knowledge of infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, many do not have the opportunity to experience chemical research with Raman spectroscopy. Thanks to the generosity of the Robert A. Welch Foundation of Houston, the UMHB Chemistry Department has installed two new state-of-the-art instruments with a combined value exceeding $100,000. The Near-Infrared and Raman Spectrophotometers are now significantly expanding the university’s capacity for chemical research, allowing students to measure the concentrations of microplastics in beverages and natural waters for environmental studies, to identify substances present in medications for pharmaceutical studies, and to conduct theoretical investigations.
“I am very grateful to the Robert A. Welch Foundation for their generosity in providing these remarkable instruments which offer great potential to expand our students’ capabilities for research,” said Dr. Ruth Ann Murphy, chemistry professor.
The Near-Infrared (Near-IR) Spectrophotometer will also benefit chemical research
students who can analyze plastics like polyethylene with applications to their recycling and samples which can be studied through glass and plastic as they remain in their original containers. These new acquisitions are in addition to the research-grade, digital, Peltier temperature-controlled polarimeter acquired by the UMHB Chemistry Department earlier this spring, also with a grant from the Welch Foundation.
$40K Research Grant
The chemistry department also received a $40,000 grant from the Welch Foundation to fund student chemistry research for the 2025-2026 academic year. It will facilitate student research scholarships, conference travel, publications and new equipment.
"This is a highly significant achievement for our department, and one that will truly benefit our students,” Murphy said. “Thanks to this grant, they will learn to study chemistry through hands-on chemical research with some of the most state-of-the-art equipment available today."
NOTEWORTHY
New OT Doctorate SLATED FOR 2026
A new entry-level occupational therapy doctorate program is set to start in the spring of 2026. The 28-month program, which is part of UMHB’s Mayborn College of Health Sciences, will prepare students for careers in the ever-changing healthcare environment. This addition is an expansion of the occupational therapy master's program that began in 2020 and will allow students within the master's program to choose an advanced pathway and receive a doctoral degree.
With the same mission, vision, curricular design, and educational approach as the master's (MSOT) program, the occupational therapy doctorate (OTD) will prepare students to be excellent entry-level practitioners with the additional value of the capstone experience in one of the following focus areas: Program Development, Research, Policy and Advocacy, Clinical Practice, and Administration/Entrepreneurship.
"We are so excited to offer students the choice between master's or doctoral-level degree programs in occupational therapy," said Giulianne Krug, PhD, founding program director for UMHB's MSOT and OTD programs. "Consistent with our student-centered approach to OT education, we have structured the program to allow students to make a fully informed, educated choice about which degree will best meet student learning and career goals. To date, we are the only OT program in Texas offering students this incredible opportunity to choose between a MSOT or OTD within the same degree path."
During the year, Alumni Ambassadors will:

UMHB Alumna Abigail Davis
Shines at USGA Adaptive Open
UMHB women’s golf alumna Abigail Davis ‘24 placed eighth overall in the women’s standings at the prestigious USGA Adaptive Open Championship held in Pinehurst, NC, this past July.
A standout member of the UMHB women’s golf team for three years, Abigail graduated in 2024 and is now pursuing a graduate degree in occupational therapy at UMHB.
Born without her left hand, she was one of only 96 athletes— selected from more than 2,500 applicants—invited to compete in the national tournament.
Abigail finished first in her division, earning an automatic
invitation to next year’s U.S. Adaptive Open and opening the door to future international adaptive golf competitions.
While a sophomore at UMHB, she was honored with the Division III Kim Moore Spirit Award by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association. The award recognizes a student-athlete or coach who demonstrates exceptional spirit, a positive attitude on and off the golf course, mental toughness in facing challenges and is a role model for her team.
Abigail hopes to one day work as an occupational therapist and work with children who, like her, live without limbs.
Caden Steubing Named New Strength & Conditioning Coach
Caden Steubing earned his undergraduate degree in exercise physiology at UMHB in 2023, where he played football from 2020-2022. After graduation, he taught weight training, fitness theory and practice, softball and running classes at Baylor University, and worked as an athletic performance intern. He earned his master's degree in exercise physiology from Baylor in 2025.
Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor Recipients
UMHB students James McGlumphy and Avery Hill were named American Southwest Conference Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor recipients—the highest award given to ASC student-athletes. Presented by Faculty Athletics Representatives, the honor recognizes one male and one female graduate from each institution for excellence in academics, athletics and leadership.
James, a Sport Management major from Round Rock, graduated with a perfect 4.00 GPA and was named 2024-25 Sport Management Major of the Year. A two-time All-ASC Second Team pitcher for Cru Baseball, he also earned four Academic All-ASC honors, two CSC Academic All-District awards, and was named an ASC Distinguished ScholarAthlete.
Avery, a Business Marketing graduate from Keller, graduated this past May with a 3.974 GPA. A four-time All-ASC golfer with three first-team selections, she’s also a three-time WGCA All-American Scholar and earned ASC Co-Freshman of the Year. Avery helped lead her team to ASC titles in 2022 and 2025 and ended her career competing individually at the 2025 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship as one of just six individuals selected to advance to the final rounds.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
HANNAH BALKENBUSH
Beautiful MinistriesHope
By Keely Mills
Sophomore Hannah Balkenbush knows exactly where her hope lies: in Jesus Christ. That conviction is the driving force behind Beautiful Hope Ministries, a nonprofit she founded in 2021 to raise awareness about human trafficking and to offer Christ-centered restoration to survivors.
The seeds of Hannah’s mission were planted during her freshman year of high school when she partnered with Unbound Now, an anti-trafficking ministry. Her first event—a benefit concert at her church—raised $12,000. That early success led to even greater impact. In 2023, she organized a gala that raised $75,000 to support the rescue of more than 100 children.
“I decided long-term that I didn’t just want to fundraise—I wanted to do the work myself,” Hannah said. In 2022, she officially launched Beautiful Hope Ministries, which has since become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
At the heart of Beautiful Hope Ministries is a simple but profound belief: without Jesus, there is no hope.
“Our mission is to support and restore survivors of trafficking and poverty in Jesus’ name,” Hannah said. “Outside of Christ, there is no lasting hope.”
Hannah’s passion for ministry has taken her across the globe—from the impoverished neighborhoods of Honduras to the streets of Paris and Warsaw. In Honduras, she met villagers who had gone without water for eight days. When she asked how they were surviving, her translator replied, “They live off the breath of God.”
To date, Hannah has raised more than $120,000 for antitrafficking efforts, helping rescue hundreds of children. In addition, Hannah was invited to Paris ahead of the 2024 Olympics, where she met with an ambassador from the International Olympic Committee, France’s Minister of the Interior, and undercover agents from the U.S. Embassy. Together, they worked to establish the French National Human Trafficking Hotline in preparation for the expected surge in trafficking during the games.
HOPE AND RESTORATION
Student Hannah Balkenbush makes it possible for human trafficking victims to find healing and hope in Jesus.
Hannah explained, “If a girl doesn’t find her worth in Christ, she’ll look for it elsewhere. When she goes searching for things other than Christ, she is going to find darkness.”
As a freshman at UMHB last year, Hannah started developing a Care Closet with Beautiful Hope Ministries to provide essentials for children and young people in need. She’s also researching nonprofits in Belton and Temple to find ways Beautiful Hope can help fill unmet needs locally.
Long term, her goal is to build orphanages and safe houses around the world, “specifically in the 10/40 Window, because that is where the majority of the unreached people groups in the world are,” she said. The 10/40 Window is the rectangular area of North Africa, the Middle East and Asia approximately between 10 degrees north and 40 degrees north latitude.
Even though she knows there are numerous steps to get to that point, Hannah has faith and is patiently waiting on the Lord, knowing that is what He calls his children to do.
“God can do the impossible even through suffering and brokenness.”

UMHB TRADITIONSyears of
At UMHB, tradition isn’t just a formality or a once-a-year event. It’s woven into the very fabric of everyday life on campus.
From the moment students arrive until the day they graduate, they are surrounded by rich and meaningful opportunities that shape their UMHB experience and forge lasting bonds with classmates and alumni alike.
Marching in academic regalia at midnight, lighting candles side by side with fellow Crusaders, singing “Old Baylor” and “Up With the Purple,” raising the “C” with pride during the Alma Mater, portraying Biblical scenes in the Easter Pageant, creating memories during Stunt Night, ringing the Senior Bell, and proudly placing a graduation robe on the shoulders of a junior—all of these beloved traditions are the moments that make UMHB what it is.
These traditions extend far beyond ceremony, though. They serve as a bridge between students and alumni, reinforcing the shared identity that binds the UMHB community together. Beth Norvell ‘03, associate director of Museum and Alumni Engagement, put it simply: “Students are only here for a few years. Helping them understand what it takes to find a place of belonging is just as important as preparing them for their careers.”
Traditions bring together all the generations, past, present and future, she added. “We’re all gathered in one spot, doing the same thing because it connects us with our core identity—who we are, and we need that.”
That connection to identity is deeply rooted in UMHB’s founding. Miriam Osterlund ’21 M.Ed. ’22 is currently serving a doctoral internship at the Musick Alumni Center and Museum at the Parker House. There, she spends time
researching UMHB traditions and helping educate others about their importance. “I love seeing how the history of UMHB from the time it started at Independence, Texas, has continued to this day in everything we do in the classroom and outside of the classroom, through our traditions.”
Though several of our traditions date back to the beginning of the 1900s, the new traditions are just as important. “The Ring Ceremony is one of the newer traditions and marks the start of a student’s senior year. So many seniors love their school and proudly wear their rings, but they’re also sad to graduate,” Miriam explained.
Beth noted that she finds special meaning in the way many UMHB traditions are marked with light. “Students begin and end their time at UMHB with light—freshmen begin with the candles at that Dubbing Ceremony, and they end with candlelight at Midnight March their senior year, one of the last traditions they take part in.”
And there’s a lot more to the UMHB traditions than meets the eye.
Traditions like Miss MHB are particularly impactful for those who participate behind the scenes. Miriam, who competed in Miss MHB when she was a student and now advises the event, says, “A lot of people will see the end product, but the experience of going through the entire process leaves a lasting impact, and students grow so much.”
The key ingredient that makes many of the traditions so special is the student leadership and involvement.
Because at UMHB, students don’t just observe tradition—they live it, shape it and carry it forward for generations to come, Miriam said. “Without students being the heart of our traditions, I don’t think they would last.”

5 CANDLELIGHTING | As seniors prepare to graduate, they gather to light candles—one of the final traditions in their college journey. It’s a reflective, emotional moment symbolizing unity, growth and the light they carry forward. 3 4 2 5 1
1 DUBBING CEREMONY | Incoming freshmen are officially welcomed into the Crusader family during this ceremony, which includes a candlighting and singing of the Alma Mater. University officials then symbolically knight new students and proclaim them “Crusaders Forever.” Dubbing marks the beginning of their UMHB story and sets the tone for their four years ahead.
2 HOMECOMING | Homecoming is a cherished annual tradition where alumni return to reconnect, celebrate and relive UMHB spirit. First held in 1909, it has evolved over the years but continues to feature beloved events like the pep rally, fireworks and the Burning of the Letters. Today’s celebration includes a Homecoming Court, a carnival on King Street and a lively tailgate party.
3 CRUSADER KNIGHTS | Crusader Knights is a lighthearted, student-led competition for male students that began in 1993 as a spoof of Miss Mary Hardin-Baylor. The event includes group performances, creative video skits and a formal attire segment. Alumni judges select the winner, who is crowned “Mr. Crusader Knight” by the university president and represents UMHB for the year.
4 CHARTER DAY | Charter Day celebrates the founding of UMHB on Feb. 1, 1845, and honors its rich history and legacy. Sophomores ring the Independence Bell while seniors lay a wreath at Judge Baylor’s grave, followed by a presidential prayer and a campus-wide birthday celebration. The tradition dates back to 1893.
6 CHARTER CELEBRATION | Each Spring, alumni are invited to return to campus during the Charter Celebration weekend. This event originated from a Spring Alumni Weekend and showcases beloved university traditions. Notably, alumni commemorating their 50th reunion are honored and receive their 50-year pins, symbolizing their induction into the Heritage Club—an exclusive group of alumni who have reached this milestone. Festivities encompass class reunions, chapel services, academic gatherings, musical performances, Midnight March, and various occasions to sing Up with the Purple.
7 STUNT NIGHT | Stunt Night is a fun-filled night of student-led skits and performances. It’s a chance for students to bond, get creative and compete in good-spirited fun.
8 EASTER PAGEANT | Held each spring, the Easter Pageant features students reenacting the story of Christ’s death and resurrection. It's a cherished, Christ-centered tradition that brings faith to life for both performers and spectators.
9 ROBING CEREMONY | Graduating seniors place their graduation robes on the shoulders of juniors in a symbolic gesture of “passing the torch.” It connects classes and continues the cycle of leadership and tradition.
10 MISS MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR PAGEANT | More than just a pageant, Miss MHB is a transformational experience where participants grow in confidence and leadership. Behind the scenes, students form lasting friendships and gain valuable life skills.
11 REVIVAL | Revival has been a part of UMHB's spiritual life since its founding in 1845, offering students a time for deep reflection and renewed faith. In 1999, the tradition evolved into a multi-day, student-led tent revival held each spring. The event includes worship, prayer and discipleship groups, continuing to inspire spiritual growth across campus.
13 MIDNIGHT MARCH | One of the most iconic UMHB traditions, students don their caps and gowns to march at midnight across campus. This symbolic event marks the transition from student to graduate, creating a lasting memory under the stars. 10 12 11 13
12 RING CEREMONY | Though a newer tradition, the Ring Ceremony has quickly become a meaningful milestone. Students receive their class rings, symbolizing achievement, pride and their permanent place in the UMHB legacy.

A Legacy of Love
Bob and Jan Avery's Generosity to UMHB
When Bob Avery reflects on his life, he sees more than just the decades of hard work, faith and family. He sees a clear thread of purpose stitched into every milestone along his path. That sense of purpose is what inspired Bob and his beloved late wife, Jan, to give back, especially to UMHB, a school neither of them attended but both grew to love deeply.
Bob Avery is no stranger to hard work. “I worked in the summers, and I worked while I was going to Temple Junior College, and saved my money,” the Temple native said. Later, while attending Texas A&M and pursuing a degree in architecture with a focus on construction science, Bob worked at a funeral home and later for a local home builder. He also served 10 years in the Texas Army National Guard. None of it was easy. But those

Bob and Jan Avery, longtime UMHB donors and friends, have given generously to help UMHB students pursue their education and lives of purpose.
long days taught him the value of education—and the struggle many students face trying to afford it.
Bob’s early career in construction eventually led him to partner with his father-in-law, U.J. Baugh Jr., launching what would become Baugh and Avery Construction. The company built hundreds of stores and custom fixtures across 17 states for brands like Austin Shoes, Buster Brown and Foot Action.
It was a career built on craftsmanship, integrity and faith— values he shared with Jan, his wife of 54 years. Their story began in a classic Texas way: on a blind date to a Baylor football game. “Her cousin was one of my best friends through school,” Bob recalled. “He said, ‘I can get you a date with my cousin.’” And that “cousin” turned out to be Jan Carol Baugh, whom he married several years later in 1970.
Their love story spanned decades, two sons, countless road trips in a 65-foot mobile home, and a love for serving others. Jan, a trained dental hygienist, worked both in clinics
and later as a secretary for their company. But perhaps her most lasting work was what she did quietly—supporting Bob in his work (and later in his missions), raising their boys and giving generously to help others thrive.
After retiring from his successful construction business in the 1990s, Bob poured himself into mission work in Mexico, helping build orphanages, clinics and churches through Gloria al Padre Ministries.
“I started out as the cook and a truck driver,” he said. But once his construction background became known, he soon found himself leading building projects that would impact communities for years.
“It was a total deviation from my previous career,” he said, “but it was meaningful.”
That same heart for service extended to their financial giving. In the 1970s, Bob began investing in Baptist Church Loan Corporation bonds. The interest they produced became something more than income.
“I said, ‘I’m going to give this to something for the Lord,’” he decided.
That initial generosity helped a church member’s son attend UMHB and sparked a decadeslong relationship with the university.
Over time, Bob and Jan helped numerous students through school at UMHB, Baylor University and Temple College. However, their lasting legacy is the creation of
three endowed scholarships at UMHB.
The first scholarship was named for their special-needs son, Jonathan, who is now 43, and benefits education students. The second bears Bob and Jan’s names and supports music students.
"It's a good feeling. It's a feeling of accomplishment. It's great joy to see these kids after they graduate and get married and have a family and see what they do with their lives." —Bob Avery
“I love music. I can’t play a note and I can’t sing a lick, but I love music,” Bob said, explaining their love for attending UMHB choir performances over the years.
The third endowment, which is still in the works, will be created in Jan’s memory using proceeds from her annuity, which is an especially meaningful act after she tragically lost her life in a pedestrian accident last December.
Giving so generously to help future students at a Christian university “feels great. And she felt the same way,” Bob said.
Though neither Bob nor Jan were UMHB alumni, their admiration for the university was
personal and profound. “We gave to UMHB because of the Christian relationship and influence, and the atmosphere at UMHB is just top notch,” he said.
In addition to the scholarships, the Averys also contributed to the Marek-Smith Center for Teacher Preparation, naming the one-onone room in Jonathan’s honor.
Bob recalled the impact of meeting the university president, Dr. Randy O’Rear, for the first time: “He really impressed me, and after we met, he knew us by name and was eager to shake hands with me and hug Jan. Every time he sees us, he says, ‘I’m praying for you.’”
In May, just months after losing Jan, Bob’s 23-year-old grandson was killed in a car accident in Wyoming. “So much heartache in such a short period of time,” he said. When asked what gets him through it, his answer is simple: “God and Christian friends.”
Looking back, Bob sees God's hand in every chapter of his life. “You couldn’t plan it. Nobody’s smart enough to plan something like that,” he said. “All of it was for a reason.”
For Bob, giving isn’t just about money—it’s about meaning. “It’s a good feeling. It’s a feeling of accomplishment. It’s great joy to see these kids after they graduate and get married and have a family and see what they do with their lives.”

SWEET SURPRISE
Charlie Kimmey surprises his wife, Dr. Kathy Kimmey, with an endowed scholarship in her name at a plaque unveiling celebration in August.
A Lasting Tribute
Surprise Scholarship Unveiling Honors
Kathy Kimmey, MD
When Charlie Kimmey and his daughter, Kelli O’Donnell, started planning a surprise for the woman at the heart of their family, they knew it had to be special. It had to honor not just the incredible physician Dr. Kathy Kimmey is, but the deep impact she’s had on her patients, colleagues and community over the last four decades. The result was the creation of the Dr. Kathy Kimmey Presidential Endowed Scholarship—a heartfelt and enduring tribute to a life devoted to service.
Dr. Kathy Kimmey’s path to medicine was inspired in her early years, watching her father, Dr. Earl Edwin Brooks, who was a physician in their small, rural town of Bogota, Texas.
“He did everything. He was the go-to physician,” Kathy’s husband, Charlie, said. That commitment to others shaped Kathy’s own aspirations.
DONOR SPOTLIGHT
KATHY
KIMMEY, MD
After graduating from Rivercrest High School, attending Paris Junior College and Texas A&M, and then medical school in Lubbock, Kathy landed at Scott & White in Temple for her residency in internal medicine from 1985 to 1988. She never left.
“She loved Scott & White. Loved the teaching aspect with medical students,” Charlie said. In 2021, Kathy transitioned to a more manageable schedule in the oncology department, focusing on patients at high risk for breast cancer, leaving behind the grueling 75- to 80-hour workweeks she once maintained.
Behind Kathy’s professional success was Charlie, a man who shaped his own career around supporting hers. “I’ve had three careers,” he said. “My career has always catered to hers, because, again, that was more of a calling for her and a passion.”
"What a blessing to be able to provide scholarship assistance for nurses of the future!"
—Kathy Kimmey
Charlie and his daughter, Kelli, had been mulling over the idea of doing something meaningful for Kathy for years, spurred on by comments from her patients and friends. Enlisting the help of several of Kathy’s close friends to gather contact information and spread the word, the surprise event took place at the Ralph Wilson Youth Club—where Charlie had worked for 17 years— under the guise of a routine gathering.
“I told her to block out that weekend, that there was an event at the youth club that we need to help with,” Charlie said with a laugh. “It’s not out of line with what she would normally be thinking or doing. We just thought it’d be kind of fun to do, and then it’s really been kind of neat.” Pulling it off, though, required a bit of undercover coordination. “I told her friends, ‘Don’t call me after hours!’”
The event was a success with more than 100 friends and
family gathered to unveil the scholarship plaque along with an announcement that more than $135,000 has already been committed to the scholarship with more donations coming.
Though neither Charlie nor Kathy attended UMHB, the family felt strongly that their gift would make a deeper impact there.
“I just love UMHB,” Charlie said. “There are just a lot of good things that go on there. It’s just kind of a gem in Central Texas.” He praised the school’s leadership, especially President Dr. Randy O’Rear: “Everything they do, they do first class. A great nursing program, great athletic facilities. All the facilities are just first class.”
The scholarship he and Kelli created will support nursing students, which they knew would be deeply meaningful to Kathy.
“She’s worked with a lot of great nurses. Behind every good doctor is an even better nurse,” he said.
"I have never felt so surprised, loved and honored by this scholarship! How were my friends and family able to keep this a secret from me for over a year?”
Kathy said of the celebration at the Ralph Wilson Youth Club. “What a blessing to be able to provide scholarship assistance for nurses of the future! I am thankful to live in a community that values education. Go CRU!"
Charlie said it was important to create the scholarship as a
surprise to his wife since she’s never been one to seek the spotlight.
“She’s not one for the limelight. She’s kind of behind the scenes, under the radar,” Charlie said. But her influence has been anything but quiet. Her patients have always looked to her as someone who always listened.
“She had her phone on her hip, 24/7,” Charlie said. “If we are traveling on vacation and a patient calls, she’s gonna step aside and walk them through whatever needs to be done.”
Charlie and Kathy’s love story began at Texas A&M, where Charlie first spotted her at the apartment complex where they both lived (but he was too shy to talk to her), he admitted.
“So one day, I told Mark, my roommate, ‘That’s the girl I’m gonna marry.’”
Eventually, Mark took matters into his own hands and introduced them. They married in 1981, raised two children, Brooks and Kelli, and now have six grandchildren.
“Faith, family and friends— that’s just kind of who she is,” he said.
For Charlie, the decision to honor his wife this way was both emotional and rewarding. “She deserves it just because she’s dedicated her life to medicine and helping others, and we just thought it’d be something fun to do and a neat way to honor her.”

ALUMNI NOTES
NEW CAMPUS MISSIONARY
Logan Knous’ new role as campus missionary, a partnership between the university’s Spiritual Life office and the Baptist Student Ministry, allows him to disciple young men, develop leaders and help others discover their Godgiven purpose.

Called to Campus
Alumnus Steps Into Role as Campus Missionary
When Logan Knous arrived at UMHB as a freshman, he never imagined he’d one day hold a fulltime position ministering to the very students he once sat beside. But four years after stepping into his first UMHB33 meeting, Logan is back on campus—not as a student, but as UMHB’s campus missionary, leading the same ministry that transformed his own college journey.
The role of campus missionary is a collaboration between the Baptist Student Ministry and UMHB’s Spiritual Life office, and part of Logan’s new responsibilities is ministering to young college men who join UMHB33, an organization designed to help them grow in faith, discover their calling and lead with purpose. Logan, who has served as a leader in the group since his freshman year, says UMHB33 was much more than a student organization while he was a student. “It was the most transformative thing I experienced at UMHB— more than my academics, more than my schooling,” he said. “It taught me how to lead others, how to reach guys where they are, to communicate the Gospel, to build teams, to interview teams, to help leaders grow in their development and the gifts that God has given them, and to grow an organization from where it started to where it is today.”
As a transformational development major, just weeks into his
freshman year, the coordinator and founder of UMHB33, Danny Allen, saw Logan's leadership potential and asked him to be on the ministry’s leadership team. By his sophomore year, Logan was trained and leading the entire ministry and continued in that role until he graduated. During this stint, Logan introduced more structure and communication tools to the growing group, moving from spreadsheets to a centralized platform to expand the group’s outreach.
He also helped organize its first two mission trips to Montana, partnering with East Haven Baptist Church’s summer camp. He helped host banquets on biblical marriage and partnered with a local church to host a weekend Man Camp, designed to foster relationships and build connections.
As a transformational development major, Logan had planned to enter church ministry, perhaps through a pastoral residency, but when a new opportunity emerged through UMHB33’s leadership pipeline, he knew it was where God was calling him to be, even though he says he “never saw it coming.”
“UMHB33 is something that I’ve been really passionate about for four years now, and so the opportunity to continue leading in that was something that I was like, I have to be a part of that.
“We always talk about, you know, ‘Lord, would you do something through this ministry that we don’t expect?’ and God has continued to
answer that prayer time and time again.”
In his new role, Logan mentors student leaders and connects with incoming freshmen even before they arrive on campus. This past summer, he sent welcome mailers and personally called new students to tell them about opportunities, like UMHB33, on campus.
“You could just hear in their voices how surprised they were and how thankful they were,” he said. “One guy even asked me, ‘So, this is a safe place for me to be able to share about my past?’ and I said, ‘Yes, absolutely.’”
Logan, who is also working on a master’s degree at Truett Seminary, sees this role as more than just a continuation of his time in college—it’s a calling. “It’s just a surreal experience, because I know what UMHB33 has done in my life,” he said. “This is really the strategic point in a man’s life. To be able to give a guy the tools he needs to be successful, not only at UMHB, but for life, it is just amazing.”
Looking ahead, Logan envisions even bigger things—perhaps even a dedicated ministry space. For now, though, he’s focused on the day-today work of discipleship, leadership development, and building lasting community. “Really, I’m living this life that I didn’t expect,” he said, “and it’s been so rich and so full and so just unexpected.”
Remembering Vicky Sue Bawcom
In Memory
Former First Lady of UMHB
May 6, 1945 - August 13, 2025
From her earliest days, Vicky had a gift for connecting with people and making every space feel warmer. Growing up, she was active in Rainbow Girls and Brownies, and at Levelland High School she excelled as an honor student, a twirler, and even earned the titles of Basketball Sweetheart and Band Sweetheart.
In college, she became a feature twirler for the Texas Tech Band and, in 1965, was crowned Homecoming Queen. That same year, a chance meeting at a bonfire introduced her to Jerry Bawcom. The spark was instant, and they were married on December 18, 1965, at Ford Memorial Chapel in First Baptist Church of Lubbock. The two finished their undergraduate years side by side, building both their marriage and their future.
Vicky began her career teaching fourth grade, a role she held until 1969, when Jerry accepted a position at Texas Wesleyan and they moved to Fort Worth. There, they welcomed their daughter, Amy Marie, in 1970. Vicky quickly became a vibrant presence in her new community—serving as director of Young Baptist Women at Polytechnic Baptist Church, leading the Sun Beams children’s choir, and taking on leadership roles as president of both the Kaleidoscope Club and the Junior Woman’s Club of Fort Worth. Together, she and Jerry also taught college Sunday School, modeling a life of shared service.
When Jerry was elected president of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1990, Vicky stepped into the role of first lady with grace. She became known as a warm and welcoming hostess, opening their home for community gatherings, alumni receptions, dinners, parties, and their beloved annual Christmas open house. Beyond the campus, she served with the Woman’s Wednesday Club and as president of the Temple City Federation of Women’s Clubs.
For nearly two decades, Vicky worked alongside Jerry, making students feel known, valued, and loved. Her approachable spirit and genuine interest in people left a mark on the UMHB community that still lingers today. In 2012, the Bawcom Student Union was named in honor of Vicky and Jerry—a lasting tribute to their years of dedication, generosity, and love for the university and its people.

SERVICE AND SUPPORT
As First Lady of UMHB, Marietta embraced her role with warmth and hospitality, welcoming students, faculty, and friends alike. She stood faithfully alongside the campus through historic milestones, including the transition to coeducation and the college’s transformation into a university in 1978.
October 29, 1925 - September 6, 2025
Marietta and Bobby Parker grew up together in Mexia, Texas, but it wasn’t until Bobby returned from service in World War II that their friendship blossomed into romance. In 1946, Marietta left school to marry Bobby. After welcoming their two sons, Bobby and Mark, she returned to complete her degree and went on to teach typing and bookkeeping at Waco High School for 10 years, while Bobby began teaching at Baylor University.
In 1969, Bobby shared news of an opportunity at a small women’s college in Belton, Texas. Two years later, in 1971, he became president of Mary Hardin-Baylor College—a role he would hold with distinction for the next 20 years.
As First Lady of UMHB, Marietta embraced her role with warmth and hospitality, welcoming students, faculty, and friends alike. She stood faithfully alongside the campus through historic milestones, including the transition to coeducation and the college’s transformation into a university in 1978. Reflecting on her years in Belton, she once said, “With the abundance of love in our home, and being blessed with such great friends, I’ve loved it!” Her joy and gracious spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
In 1972, Bobby and Marietta were named honorary alumni, and to Marietta’s delight, she could finally join in singing Up With the Purple. Their loyalty and devotion to UMHB were publicly recognized in 2002 with the dedication of the Parker Academic Center.
IN MEMORIAM
UMHB profoundly mourns the loss of our alumni, faculty, staff, students and retirees. We express our deepest sympathy to their family and friends, and honor each of them here.
