by Amanda Fitzgerald o our esteemed Sigma Circle alumni, faculty, staff and students, we have accomplished something that happens once in a lifetime: THE 85th Anniversary! On September 22, 2012, the Sigma Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa held its first (and last) ever 85th Anniversary celebration. We believe this was actually the first anniversary celebration the Sigma Circle of ODK has ever planned and it is to be sure that everyone in attendance is looking forward to the next one. As soon as guests approached the tent, they knew it was going to be a special night. Under the marquee at the base of the ODK Fountain was a lovely set up of cocktail tables and a gorgeous dessert buffet. There was crème brulee, chocolate mousse with raspberries, fruit, Luminarias light up the ODK crepes and an espresso Fountain bar; the Sigma Circle re-

thetic turf field at Byrd Stadium. The FieldTurf Revolution surface offers a safer surface for players, temperature control via a heat-reducing technology called CoolPlay, and colorful new “Maryland Pride” midfield and endzone logos. CoolPlay combines silica sand and cryogenic rubber infill to lower the turf ’s temperature by up to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Turf does not require the high level of maincontinued on page 3

or following the presidential race. It’s a great time to show off your Terp pride; the University of Maryland continues to prove itself as an institution that provides students with unique opportunities, takes the lead in sustainability initiatives, and offers inspiration to our broader community. Maryland was just ranked #4 or for aspiring entrepreneurs, after this spring’s particularly competitive Cupid’s Cup and the University’s celebration of “30 days of EnTERPreneurship.” Through a partnership with Microsoft, the University is now able to offer students free downloads of Microsoft products, including operating system updates and the Microsoft Office Suite—ensuring that vital, educational technology is available to all students. We are also introducing reusable take-out containers at on-campus eateries, and piloting a composting program across campus. Three Maryland students biked across the country this summer with the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adult’s “4k for Cancer.” The riders spent 70 days bicycling from Baltimore to Seattle, raising money and touching lives along the way. And if you haven’t heard about Zach Lederer, go to http://zaching.tumblr.com. See how far Zach’s message has travelled, or post your own “Zaching” picture in support of cancer survivors and cancer patients. Zach is a journalism major and basketball team manager who is currently fighting a malignant brain tumor. His signature “Zaching” pose has gone viral, and is making its way around the world! Did you watch the summer Olympics? You may have seen two Maryland alumna sporting red, white, and blue. Katie O’Donnell and Keli Smith Puzo, both former players for Maryland’s field hockey program,

competed with the U.S. Women’s Field Hockey team during the London Games. Through Dr. Loh’s partnerships with international institutions, we will also be sending Maryland students to China this semester. Maryland’s School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies is producing “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in collaboration with the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts; the cast includes Chinese and American actors, who will each perform in their native language. The cast performed at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the end of September, before traveling to China to perform for two weeks in Beijing! One of our Sigma Circle officers, Ruth Anne Watkins is helping to manage the production on campus and in China! This year, the Sigma Circle celebrated its 85th anniversary with a reception on McKeldin Mall. Current ODK members and ODK alumni were invited to celebrate our circle’s history with champagne and desserts around the ODK Fountain. The evening was a delightful opportunity to reflect on the honor of ODK membership; it is the devotion and generosity of ODK alumni that has made our circle so strong. This semester, Maryland Football has also rolled out a new turf field! We would like to invite all of our alumni to come see the new turf technology, and join us for our annual Homecoming Leadership Reception on October 20th. Homecoming is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with the Sigma Circle and the University of Maryland, and to show off some Terp pride! I wish you the best, wherever you may be this semester, and I hope that you will return to Maryland in October. As always, stay in touch, and thank you for support.

Message from the Faculty Secretary By Brooke Lecky Supple, Ph.D. Greetings from College Park! ello ODK! Welcome to fall on campus! The leaves are starting to change, football season has started with a bang, and the students are back studying by the ODK Fountain on the Mall. Speaking of the Fountain, I hope you were able to join us for our 85th Anniversary Celebration in September. It was a glorious night and a memorable celebration for generations of ODKers. Check out the photos included in this edition of the newsletter! This fall I am so fortunate to work with a fabulous group of ODK Officers! Earlier this summer, Sigma Circle President Katy Rennenkampf, Philanthropy & Community Service Chair Andrew Cahoon, and I travelled to Charlotte, North Carolina for the ODK National Convention. We enjoyed meeting representa-

tives from other Circles (about 180 were in attendance), learning about the new ODK brand and logo, and gathering lots of great ideas for our campus. We were recognized with the Superior Circle Award as one of 18 outstanding circles. This fall, we are looking to streamline and “green” the selection process by using online voting. We had the most applications ever this fall with 263 students applying. By the time you receive this mailing, we will have had our selection meeting and identified the students to be inducted on December 2, 2012. Our officers are also hoping to enhance the sense of community among current ODK members through more social and community events. Our first happy hour set the tone for a great year. In other ODK news, we hope you will save the date for our ODK Leadership Lectures. So far, we have two great speakers scheduled this year. Partnering with the First Year Book, we are pleased to offer the William L. Thomas, Jr. ODK Lecture on Tuesday, October 16 at 4:00 pm in the Hoff Theater. Brooke Gladstone
will talk about this year’s First Year Book selection, “The Influencing Machine: Brooke Gladstone on the Media.” And save the date for this exciting spring lecture – on February 14, the Drury G. Bagwell ODK Lecture will co-sponsor Cornel West, as part of the Voices of Social Change lecture series. Stay tuned for more information… As the fall semester moves along, please mark your calendars to join us on Saturday, October 20, for our Homecoming Student Leadership reception in a new venue – Cole Field House! spring semester. The new field was paid for with private funding. Maryland officials released the design in June, and the installation was completed in August. The University joins over 70 other NCAA Division I teams with FieldTurf stadiums, but Maryland is the first to install CoolPlay technology. The turf installation follows a $50 million renovation of Tyser Tower in 2009.
Baltimore-based Under Armour, founded by Maryland class of 1996 graduate and current CEO Kevin Plank, consulted on the project. Brock International provided a drainage layer and shock pad to reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury. With a new quarterback, new coaching staff, and a new state-ofthe-art field, the 2012-13 Maryland Terrapins football team is ready to compete.

The Mall was an absolutely spectacular sight; the bottom tier of the fountain was lined with luminarias and the benches above the plaques highlighting the Stewards of the Fountain were lit up for all to see. The string quartet set the mood and we were on track for a fabulous evening. About halfway through the evening, President Wallace Loh shared his congratulations before

It is very difficult to have up-to-date news when we only publish our newsletter twice a year. But here is what we have and we hope you enjoy reading about your friends! Stuart Robinson ‘71 was asked to run as a write in candidate for the Grand Isle School Board just a couple of days before the primary. (It was a good decision because he won by a 4-1 margin!) Bruce Posner ‘72 is the host of two radio shows about Terrapin Sports, Terp Talk on 1300 AM in Baltimore on Tuesday nights at 6:00 p.m. and Terp Talk on 1580 AM in Washington, DC on Saturday mornings at 8:00 a.m. Tune is to hear more about our Terps! Rayner Hesse, Jr. ‘76 and his partner, Anthony Chiffolo were married on January 1, 2012 in a civil ceremony at their home in Hartsdale, NY. (Congrats Rayner & Anthony!) Andrew L. Johnson ‘83 is glad to be back in Maryland after six years on the West Coast! (Welcome home, Andrew! Hope to see you at Homecoming!) Dave Huting ‘84 was recently recognized as one of Philadelphia's "Out Movers & Shakers" by Philadelphia Gay News for his business and community leadership in the LGBT community. Elizabeth Pagliei Hales ‘90 is the Senior Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Waxing Poetic, a modern heirloom jewelry line based in Santa Barbara County, California. Felix Arnold ’95 moved to Idaho to pursue work and education in the field of Clinical Social Work. He is working with youth and their families.
Keith Marler ‘95 was voted "America's Favorite Television Weather Forecaster" earlier this year by Weatherist.com (an independent forecast accuracy evaluator) and "Best Meteorologist in the Twin Cities" by City Pages magazine. Keith is the Meteorologist for the "Fox 9 Morning News" in Minneapolis and host of local talk show "The Fox 9 Buzz". Keith & wife, Susan, have been in the Twin Cities area since 2003 & have two children: Gracie & Jack. Timothy Potter ‘05 graduated from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business and married his wonderful wife, Kylie. They now live in San Francisco where Tim works as a Technology Product Manager. Kevin Calabro ’05 and his wife welcomed son, Christopher Aiden, born September 17. (Welcome future Terp!) Jeannette Lopez ‘06 married Dr. Luis Garcia on May 26th, 2012 in Baltimore, Maryland. She also recently accepted a position with Starbucks doing Human Resources for their largest coffee roasting plant in the US, located in York, PA. (Congrats Jeannette & Luis!) Megan Harvey ‘09 took four months to volunteer for TechnoServe (an NGO) in Kenya, and then she returned to the U.S. and is attending Northwestern University this fall to earn an MBA and Masters in Engineering Management.

Katie Breen ’12 is working in NYC at advertising agency, Digitas. She is in account management for American Express. Jen Cohen ’12 started working as a Junior Advertising Copywriter at Ogilvy Commonwealth Worldwide in June working on the consumer Advil account for Pfizer. Lisa Davies ’12 interned this summer at West Wing Writers, a speechwriting firm in DC. She has just accepted a position back on campus in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. (Welcome home, Lisa! Once a Terp, always a Terp!) Samantha Fowler ’12 is excited about finishing her M.Ed. at the University of Maryland and being an English teaching assistant in Nancy, France for the 2012-2013 school year. (Send us some pictures for the spring newsletter, Sam!) Kailin Hsu ’12 is going to medical school in the fall. Allison Johnson ’12 received a Fulbright grant to be an English Teaching Assistant at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland. (Wow, Allison! Great job!) MariaSanta Mangione ‘12 is in Nashville at Vanderbilt Medical School. Michelle Rosen ’12 is attending Harvard University this fall to study Microbiotics.

GETTING OUTDOORS IN COLLEGE PARK By Kiera Zitelman Our time in College Park is often filled with schoolwork and extracurricular activities, but the unique beauty and history of the local environment is not to be missed. Students and alumni, grab your running shoes, a bike, or perhaps a good book and go exploring!
Anacostia River Derived from the Indian word “anaquash,” meaning “village trading center,” the Anacostia has an enthralling history. Fish and wildlife were abundant as colonists settled in the region, home to the Nanchotank Indians. John Smith sailed up the river in 1608. However, urbanization and agriculture over the past several centuries has narrowed and degraded the river from a maximum depth of 40 feet during early American history to around five feet today. The Anacostia Tributary Trail System connects the Maryland-D.C. border with the College Park area. A view from the Anacostia Tributary Trail
Lake Artemesia Just a half mile down Lakeland Road and over the train tracks lies Lake Artemesia, a majestic 38-acre body of water on the Anacostia Tributary Trail System. Over a century ago, College Park resident Artemesia Drefs used the lake to farm goldfish. Warmer months bring picnics and fishing, and gazebos offer perfect spots for reading or watching the water for frequent ducks. Two miles of paved trails navigate around the lake, which makes it an attractive destination for runners. The Northeast Branch trail continues southward to Bladensburg Waterfront Park and Washington, D.C. Directly south of the lake, you can find the College Park Airport. Lake Artemesia
Bladensburg Waterfront Park Farther down the Anacostia Tributary Trail System is Bladensburg Waterfront Park, where the Anacostia River widens as it flows to Washington. During the War of 1812, the American defeat at the Battle of Bladensburg enabled the British to march to the White House. Today, crew teams launch boats from the park docks and the occasional fisherman tries his luck.

Paint Branch Creek The campus’s northern surroundings also hold hidden gems. Follow the Paint Branch Trail from Route 1 & Campus Drive and you’ll see remaining effects of the 2001 tornado on warped trees and wetlands just past the UM Golf Course. The trail ends at tennis courts on Cherry Hill Road, about three miles north of campus.

Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens Right over the D.C. border, Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens is home to unique birds, fish, plants, and animals on the Anacostia River. Besides bird-watchers, the park is known for attracting painters. College Park locals can get there by canoe, bike, car, or Metro.

Great Falls Farther away from College Park (fourteen miles up the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath, to be exact) you will discover Great Falls, home to a beautiful series of rapids and well known hiking trails. The name “Great Falls” refers to the breathtaking 76foot drop in elevation over a distance of less than one mile – the steepest fall line rapids of any American river. The Billy Goat Trail has hikers scrambling over rocks and steep cliff faces in nearly five miles of exciting trails along the Potomac River. Whitewater kayakers and rafters can launch above the Class III rapids or just downstream, where the water is lazier.
Great Falls
So take a break from life and enjoy the College Park environment. The cooler fall weather brings breathtaking colors as the trees begin to change, and everyone should see the fascinating landscapes around campus.
