The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is once again proud to be, through National Lottery Funding, Principal Funder of one of Northern Ireland’s most globally acclaimed musical mainstays, the Ulster Orchestra.
The 2026/27 Programme is both diverse and creative in its repertory: including new orchestral works, seasonal early classical works and reimagining the soundtrack to so many of our lives through reinterpreted modern pop music performances. And, as always, making a continued effort to extend the experience of the orchestra into as many communities across Northern Ireland as possible with the ‘On Your Doorstep’ regional concert series coming to Ballycastle and Dungannon this summer.
This spring brings highlight concerts including a performance of Grace-Evangeline Mason’s new work for orchestra, An Everywhere of Silver and Stravinsky’s joyful The Rite of Spring. Further delights for the 2026-2027 Programme include a special James Bond concert conducted by Martin Yates, a concert of curated Spielberg soundtracks led by George Morton through to orchestral modern 90s pop classics seeing us into 2027.
This year’s Programme further evidences the Ulster Orchestra’s mission to enrich the lives of those across Northern Ireland and those visiting who have the chance to experience the electricity of a live orchestra for themselves.

Welcome everyone to the Ulster Orchestra’s 60th anniversary season. This anniversary is particularly special as the season starts with Anna Handler making her debut as the Ulster Orchestra’s Chief Conductor at the iconic Ulster Hall on the 25 September, where she will be joined by a specially-created choir which includes many of Northern Ireland’s best young singers.
This spectacular event will launch a year of memorable performances, not just in Belfast, but across Northern Ireland, to celebrate our rich history and our extensive learning and community engagement activities.

The most notable of our season debutantes is new Chief Conductor Anna Handler, with whom we open and close this 60th anniversary season. Anna’s instant connection with our players last year in The Guildhall, Derry~Londonderry was incredible to witness, and I can’t wait to see how the relationship develops and deepens over this and future seasons.
We’ll mark the 200th anniversary of the death of Beethoven with several special moments across the year, including the Ninth and Seventh Symphonies and all five Piano Concertos across two evenings: a landmark event marking a welcome return for pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.

I’m always delighted at the spirit of adventure in our audiences that allows us to present new music each season; this year there’ll be work from the extraordinary British jazz pianist Julian Joseph, from young stars Grace-Evangeline Mason and Camille Pépin, from Master of the King’s Music Errollyn Wallen, and from former composer-inassociation Ian Wilson.
Our Pops season continues to attract new audiences to orchestral music, including a live orchestral accompaniment to the modern classic How to Train Your Dragon – a first for the Orchestra in Northern Ireland.
We’ll round off this special season with another modern classic, Stravinsky’s visceral and momentous The Rite of Spring, in what will be its first performance here in a generation. Unmissable!

As I step into my role as Chief Conductor of the Ulster Orchestra, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the warm welcome I have received. It is a true honour to join this remarkable orchestra in its 60th anniversary season.
Over six decades, the Ulster Orchestra has been shaped by a distinguished line of Music Directors, each leaving their unique mark and contributing to its rich artistic identity. To become part of this history — and to help shape its future — is something I approach with both humility and excitement.
An anniversary is both a moment of reflection and a moment of renewal. It invites us to look back at a rich history of music-making, while also asking: what kind of future do we want to create together?
For six decades, the Ulster Orchestra has been a vital cultural voice, deeply rooted in Northern Ireland, yet always reaching beyond borders. What inspires me most is this sense of openness: a willingness to embrace both the great symphonic tradition and the energy of the new.
This spirit lies at the heart of our season.
We celebrate music that brings people together, from the joyful brilliance of Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture to the collective human vision of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. At the same time, we
open space for voices that continue to reshape our musical landscape today, from Errollyn Wallen and GraceEvangeline Mason to the pulsating clarity of Steve Reich.
There is also a strong sense of dialogue throughout the season: between past and present, between different musical languages, and between soloist and orchestra. Whether in the luminous intimacy of Britten, the expansive landscapes of Copland, or the ecstatic worlds of Scriabin and Stravinsky, each programme invites us to experience music not as something fixed, but as something alive; something that evolves with every performance.
What matters most to me is that music creates connection. That it allows us to listen more deeply not only to sound, but to one another. In this way, the concert hall becomes more than a place of performance; it becomes a space

Julian Joseph is, quite simply, one of the leading British jazz pianists performing today and his interpretation of Gershwin’s classic Rhapsody in Blue promises a hugely exciting evening. Julian will also perform movements from his own Nine Elms Suite, an emotive musical response to the Nine Elms area of London. We close with Bernstein’s explosive music for the ballet Fancy Free, which places us firmly in downtown New York in 1944, with all its influences of stride, swing and boogie-woogie.

A lone clarinet sounds over a bed of shimmering strings and in an instant, Copland transports us to the wide open spaces and flowing brooks of the Appalachian mountain range through his music for the tender, hope-filled ballet Appalachian Spring. From the gentleness of the American Mid-West, the chiming of church bells in Errollyn Wallen’s Violin Concerto ushers in a personal depiction of memories from the early life of our soloist, Philippe Quint, before Beethoven takes us back to dance in the riotous rhythm of his mesmerising Seventh Symphony.

The horn is one of the orchestra’s most recognisable voices — ancient, searching, capable of tenderness and fire in the same breath. Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4 is a pure delight. Written with warmth and mischief for a friend, it sparkles from first note to last. Britten’s Serenade draws on poetry united by the theme of night, the tenor voice and horn joining forces for a sound that is hauntingly beautiful. Brahms saved the best for last: his Fourth, and final, Symphony. It builds to a conclusion of such bristling, defiant intensity it stops you in your tracks. Horn legend Stefan Dohr joins tenor Sebastian Hill and conductor Anna Handler for a night to remember.

Tonight’s concert opens with one of the most recognisable melodies of all time from Rota’s The Godfather Suite. A lone trumpet rings through the hall, lamenting a world slipping away, before taking us through a world teeming with Italian folk colour and romance. Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s The Prophets blazes with Jewish cultural pride and identity, written at a moment when that pride was becoming dangerous. Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique, conducted by the composer himself just nine days before his death, closes the evening in extraordinary fashion, fading to near silence rather than triumph. Music Director Laureate Daniele Rustioni returns to celebrate the Orchestra’s 60th anniversary, joined by violinist Francesca Dego.

This programme has all the freshness and brilliance of a morning in early Spring. Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez blazes with Spanish sunlight and passion and has a gorgeously lyrical central movement that has been popularised through diverse arrangements such as Miles Davis’s Sketches of Spain album and the 1996 film Brassed Off! We also bring a focus to female French composers with a work by Elsa Barraine from the early 20th century that deserves to be much more widely known and a piece by Camille Pépin, one of France’s leading living composers. Sibelius’s luminous Third Symphony sounds like a Finnish forest bursting into leaf and closes the concert.

It’s time to leave all external distractions at the Ulster Hall door and bathe in a concert full of rich melody and lush orchestration. Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony finds absolute joy in the natural world, from its opening flute solo that sounds like birdsong to its whirling dervish of a finale. The mood is warm and uplifting, sounding like sunlight diffused through the trees. Schreker’s Romantic Suite brings a little more darkness to contrast the sun; this is music where things not quite of this world sit in the shadows, just out of reach. And the evening opens with a work by Ian Wilson that invokes the simplicity of the children’s book Goodnight Moon to bring the noises of the day down to a gentle murmur.

Around it, music of shifting light and deep introspection unfolds. Grace-Evangeline Mason’s An Everywhere of Silver, inspired by Emily Dickinson, shimmers with oceanic colour and fragile brilliance. Dmitri Shostakovich’s Second Cello Concerto, performed by Jaemin Han, is spare, searching and intensely personal, building to moments of sudden, overwhelming power.
