As we write this we are still experiencing a serious COVID-19 pandemic that has directly affected our well-being, our health, and our way of life. In addition to the pandemic, the year presented us with other challenges: heated political debates, street protests, fires on the West Coast – all of these things affected our members, as well as the credit union in general.

During this holiday time we would like to say thank you to our employees, who have continued to service our members during these exceedingly difficult and uncertain times. We did everything possible, starting at the beginning of the pandemic, to protect them, their families, as well as our members, from the virus. That involved securing PPE, disinfecting supplies, cleaning services, plexiglass shields, schedule changes, equipment to work from home, constant communication, and many other changes. We are happy to say that we have been successful - there were no serious illnesses among our staff, and we continue to operate with minimal disruptions for our members.

The credit union has continued to assist our members and our whole community throughout 2020. We waived fees and offered deferrals on loan payments during the most difficult periods of the pandemic. We implemented and improved helpful remote services, such as e-signatures and online account opening, and enhanced the mobile deposit service. After providing so many of our businesses and organizations with PPP loans in the summer, we obtained $200,000 in FHLB grants for New York state based non-profits, and distributed them to our churches and organizations. Despite the difficulties in the economy, our credit union remains strong and is experiencing significant growth. In 2020 we passed the $300 million asset milestone. Mortgage lending is very active – many people are taking advantage of historically low mortgage rates. To accommodate our members that are moving to other states, we are implementing a program that will allow us to provide real estate loans in all states, including new markets where we do not have branches.

This past fall two of our branches celebrated milestone anniversaries – the first anniversary of our Matthews, NC (Charlotte) branch, and the fifth Anniversary of the Federal Way, WA (Seattle) branch! Early in 2021 the Federal Way branch will be moving to a new location. We purchased our own building for the future successful growth of our business in that area.

UFCU’s actions as a credit union are rooted in the philosophy of “people helping people” and despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the year 2020 is no different when it comes to supporting local community organizations and churches.

As a member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York (FHLBNY), whose primary mission is to advance community development and housing opportunities in states such as New York, UFCU applied for and received $200,000 in grant funding for distribution to organizations and churches in New York. CFO of UFCU, Roman Omecinskyj said, “With the rapid onset of this uncertain, deep seeded COVID-19 crisis, the true nature of the credit union’s cooperative spirit was further underscored when it soundly rose to the occasion with the timely substantive grant program. As a result, UFCU provided a much needed and welcome bright ray of hope and resiliency to our community members during this historic time of unprecedented needs.”

UFCU distributed funds to 47 different grantees across 9 counties in New York including various cultural centers, churches, museums, art foundations, youth associations, and other volunteer organizations. CEO of UFCU, Oleg Lebedko, stated that, “At the beginning of the pandemic we told our members that we are here for them, and we will get through this together. The distribution of these funds is one example of many as to how we’re acting on our word.”

It is Important to

Name a Beneficiary Have you named or updated the beneficiaries on your UFCU accounts? You should. If you have a deposit account like a Primary Share (Savings), Share Draft (Checking), Share Certificate, or IRA Share Certificate account, it’s important to plan now for the future. What is a beneficiary?

A beneficiary is a person or organization that will receive some or all of your account proceeds when you die. You may designate one or multiple beneficiaries, including a trust or an estate, for each account. You may also designate secondary or contingent beneficiaries for your accounts if your primary beneficiary is no longer there to receive them.

3 reasons to name a beneficiary:

1. It eliminates confusion. Having a current beneficiary on file for all your accounts leaves no doubt about where your money will go after you pass away. 2. It saves time (and maybe money). If you die without naming beneficiaries, it will take time for the funds in your accounts to go where you wanted. Depending on the account and where you live, your state or retirement plan could make key decisions for you — even if you have a will. Your funds could be delayed in the legal probate process, and the person in charge of your estate could face a lot of paperwork. Meanwhile, if some of your money is meant to cover your funeral expenses, your loved ones may be left with the bill. 3. I t ensures your loved ones’ financial wellness. This is especially important if the funds are intended to provide and/or to replace income and cover things like funeral costs.

At all times keep beneficiaries’ current.

You should name a beneficiary whenever you open an account. But as your life changes, it is just as important to review — and maybe update — the beneficiaries on all your accounts. Things like marriage, divorce, birth of a child, or death of a loved one can affect your financial plans and your beneficiary information.

5th Anniversary of Ukrainian Cultural Exhibit at Irondequoit Public Library 5-та річниця виставки української культури в бібліотеці Ірондеквойт, НЙ Ten years ago, the Ukrainian Federal Credit Union established the Ukrainian American Community (UAC) Foundation with a mission to help support the various cultural, social, religious, and educational initiatives of UFCU common-bond communities and their organizations coast-to-coast.

Десять років тому Українська Федеральна Кредитна Спілка заснувала Українсько-американську громадську фундацію з метою підтримувати культурні, соціальні, релігійні та освітні ініціативи громад, де УФКСпілка має свої філії.

In 2015 in Rochester, NY, Tamara Denysenko, UFCU Board member/retired CEO and UAC Foundation past president/current treasurer worked with the Irondequoit Library Board to create a Local History Gallery in the newly built, state of the art Irondequoit Public Library that would include a permanent Ukrainian cultural exhibit. Ukrainian FCU, the UAC Foundation and members of the Rochester Ukrainian-American community supported this initiative with donations to the Irondequoit Public Library Foundation. During the past five years, Tamara Denysenko, exhibit coordinator worked together with Rochester UA community members, organizations, churches, youth groups and schools to create over twenty exhibits showcasing the richness and diversity of Ukrainian culture, history, holiday and religious traditions, arts, crafts, people and current events in Ukraine. The exhibits were enjoyed not only by local residents but by international delegations, officials, and guests from Ukraine as well. With the continued support of the UAC Foundation and the community, we look forward to continuing Ukrainian cultural exhibits at Irondequoit Public Library for many more years to come.

У 2015 році в м. Рочестер, Н.Й. Тамара Денисенко, член правління УФКСпілки та перший президент і поточний скарбник УАГ Фундаціі працювала з Радою бібліотеки Ірондеквойт, щоб створити в новозбудованій бібліотеці галерею історії Ірондеквойт, де також постійнo буде українська виставка. Українська ФКСпілка, УАГ Фундація та члени місцевої українсько-американської громади підтримали цю ініціативу щедрими пожертвами. Протягом останніх п’яти років Тамара Денисенко, як координатор виставки, працювала із членами громади, організаціями, церквами, молодіжними групами та школами м. Рочестер над створенням понад двадцяти експонатів, які представляли багатство та різноманітність української культури, історії, святкових та релігійних традицій, мистецтв, ремесла, людей та сучасні події в Україні. Експонати подобались не лише місцевим жителям, а й міжнароднім делегаціям, чиновникам та гостям з України. З подальшою підтримкою УАГ Фундації та співпраці громади, сподіваємось висвітлювати українську культурну спадщину в бібліотеці Ірондеквойт на довгі роки.

Our Mitten Club is just the beginning. Having a Mitten Club account is a foundation from which a young adult can grow and begin to practice financial responsibility.

Once a Mitten Club member turns 18 we will work with you to transition your account to a regular share (savings) account. We just need permission from your parent, or grandparent, to make this happen.
