P ERSPECT IVES 2020
Dear Alumni and Friends, Greetings from the Oval Office! Normally I would say I hope you enjoyed the summer, with time away from the office and time with family and friends. However, nothing about 2020 has been normal, so I hope instead that you are safely working in your office and have had the opportunity to enjoy some quality time with family. I also typically would have an analogy to update you on the UKCD Alumni Association, but have decided instead to give you a bad news, good news, and great news update. First the bad news, the 2020 Fall Symposium was cancelled due to the uncertainty with Keeneland, the UK football season, and the number of people allowed to gather in-person in Kentucky. Alumni board business was addressed via a Zoom meeting. This included elections, scholarship winner announcement, an update from dean, and our Distinguished Alumnus of the Year winner announcement. Both winners, Dr. Dennis Stuckey and Dr. Craig Miller, were interviewed in a separate Zoom meeting available online. Next the good news, the UKCD Alumni Association Board has continued to work behind the scenes through Zoom meetings to keep things moving as normally as possible. We have been able to select our 2020 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year winners and our 2020 scholarship winners in this manner. We also were able to plan and hold our annual golf scramble in August to raise money for the scholarship fund. Ryan Vicini and Linda Epling deserve a lot of credit for their hard work in holding things together and keeping alumni informed during these unprecedented times. Lastly the great news, earlier this year, the search for our next dean at UKCD resulted in the perfect choice with the selection of Dr. Jeff Okeson. I think we can all agree that he is beyond deserving and we are blessed that he accepted the position. In his 45 years at UKCD, Dr. Okeson has touched all of our lives through his teaching, training programs, and representing us during his numerous CE events around the world. He truly is a unifying presence when our alma mater needs someone to bring us all back together. I hope you all will thank him when you have the chance for stepping up to the plate as our new leader. Until I see you again, please stay safe, stay healthy and keep saving the world one tooth at a time! Thanks, Cliff Lowdenback, DMD, MSD UKCD Alumni Association President UKCD Class of 2003

HONORING UKCD’S TALENTED FACULTY: ENDOWED POSITION RECIPIENTS NAMED The Endowed Academic Chair or Professorship is the highest academic award that a college can bestow on a faculty member. Endowed faculty professorships and chairs are crucial for recruiting and retaining the highest-quality faculty. To achieve greatness as an institution, the faculty must be composed of the best minds, the most-creative researchers, and the most-engaged teachers. Building a high-quality pool of faculty talent enriches the academic environment, helping to attract the brightest students. Recognizing the continued contributions of senior-level faculty, as well as providing funds to push the frontiers of their scholarship, are key functions of endowed positions. Dr. James K. Hartsfield The E. Preston Hicks Professorship for Orthodontics and Oral Health Research, created by the support of many orthodontic alumni and friends, celebrates the contributions Dr. Hicks made to the orthodontic field. The professorship helped to recruit Dr. James K. Hartsfield, Jr. from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 2008. Dr. Hartsfield enhances UKCD’s Orthodontic Program with his expertise in genetics and its impact on craniofacial development. An active researcher and scholar, he and colleagues established two externships at UKCD—the Craniofacial Biology Externship and Craniofacial Genetics Externship. These externships have enabled participants to extend their knowledge of both orthodontics and genetics, respectively. Dr. Hartsfield is being reappointed to this position for his third term. This professorship and its accompanying funds provide support for research and technology needed to gain an understanding of the genetic influences and their contributions to facial growth, especially abnormal growth.
Dr. Mohanad Al-Sabbagh The late Dr. Mark Thomas and Dr. Chuck Rolph, along with many alumni and friends of the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, Division of Periodontology, established the J. Gary Maynard, Jr. Professorship for Periodontology and Oral Health Research in 2005. Dr. Maynard was one of the early faculty members of the program. Dr. Mohanad Al-Sabbagh has been selected as the first holder of this professorship. Dr. Al-Sabbagh came to UK in 2004 as an assistant professor, later served as Graduate Program Director, and now serves as Division Chief for Periodontology. Dr. Al-Sabbagh is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and is an accomplished national and international speaker in periodontology and implantology. In addition to receiving several prestigious awards and fellowships, including the American Academy of Periodontology’s Bud and Linda Tarrson Fellowship Award, the Educator Award (awarded to him for outstanding teaching and mentoring in periodontology), and the Teaching Fellowship Award (of which he was the first recipient of this award), he has published over 55 peer-reviewed articles, two book chapters, and many additional abstracts. Dr. Al-Sabbagh is also an active clinical researcher.
Dr. Joseph Van Sickels Drs. Steve Tucker, Kenneth Smith, and Larry Cunningham gathered support from UK Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery alumni and friends to endow a professorship named after Dr. Robert Marciani, who served as Division Chief for many years. The Dr. Robert D. Marciani Endowed Fund in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Health Research was awarded for the first time this year to a distinguished UKCD faculty member, Dr. Joseph Van Sickels. Dr. Van Sickels, who has been at UK since 1999, has served in many capacities from Director of Residency Education to Division Chief to, currently, Program Director. He has published over 200 refereed journal articles and textbook chapters, and presented more than 245 invited lectures in 22 countries around the world. However, he is proudest of the 83 residents that he has taught who have gone on to be successful in their own careers.
Dr. Craig Miller The Alvin L. Morris Professorship in Oral Health Research was created by Jack M. and Linda C. Gill in honor of the college’s founding dean. This professorship honors leadership in research. Dr. Craig Miller is recognized for the depth and breadth of his research with an appointment to this endowed professorship. Dr. Miller, who is a 1982 graduate from the UK College of Dentistry, has been on faculty since 1989. His academic career as a clinicianscientist is marked by many achievements including: 270 peer-reviewed scientific publications and abstracts, 40 textbooks and book chapters, service as Chief of the Division of Oral Diagnosis, Oral Medicine and Oral Radiology, Director of Oral Radiology, founder and Co-Director of the Diagnosis, Wellness and Prevention clinic, and Director the first Nudge Unit at a College of Dentistry. Finally, Dr. Miller has served as principal/co-investigator on 12 clinical studies, been funded by the National Institutes of Health for 28 consecutive years, and currently is a Clinical Scholar with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
