W HO'S W HO? - DO YOU KNOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS?
STARTEN MET BUCKLE UP! Welkom in Buckle Up! We leggen graag uit hoe je met dit boek aan de slag gaat.
1
Je start met Once upon a time. Daarin maak je kennis met Sam en Dario en hun vrienden en met het thema van de unit.
In
ki
In Story time kom je meer over hen te weten. In dat deel leer je vooral luisteren en lezen. Zo krijg je de nieuwe leerstof aangebracht.
In Time to practise oefen je de leerstof in op jouw niveau. Afhankelijk van je resultaat ga je die herhalen (Time to catch up) of verdiepen (Time to get ahead). five
In Time to check yourself controleer je een eerste keer zonder te studeren hoe goed je de leerstof onder de knie hebt. Je geeft zelf aan wat goed gaat en waarop je nog moet oefenen.
BUCKLE UP!

Daarna is het aan jou: Your time!

In

Hi Nathan. What’s up? Hi guys. Well, I got an amazing bass guitar for my birthday. Now I would like to start my own band. Can any of you play an instrument? What a cool idea! I can’t play any instruments but I can sing pretty well! Dario’s brother Luíz plays the guitar. Maybe we can ask him. That’s a great idea! He’s a really nice guy. I think we would work well together. OK. I will ask him. Do you know anyone else we can ask? I can play the bass guitar and my cousin Josh Camden is an excellent drummer. I’m a terrible singer. But I’m really good with computers. Maybe I can be your mixer. Yeah, and I can be the dancer! Super! Do you think Layla would like to play the piano? I hear she has started taking lessons. I can ask her tomorrow at school. We need a place to rehearse. Any ideas? Well, we’ve got a really big garage. It’s a mess, but if we tidy it up, it will do nicely. I will ask my mum if we can rehearse there. That sounds great! Let’s get the musicians together as soon as we can. Sam, ask your mum as soon as possible. Then we can all tidy up your garage together. I’ll ask her tonight. We can start next Wednesday after school. On Wednesdays I go to my dance classes. How about Friday? I have to go to singing lessons on Fridays. But I’m free on Sunday afternoon. Sunday sounds good. I can’t wait to be famous!

Wow, Sam. That was hard work. But, your garage looks great! Yeah, I’m so happy my mum said we can use it for rehearsals. Thanks for asking me to join your band. I am very excited. Hi guys! Thanks for joining us, Layla. Are you ever on time? Sorry, guys. At weekends I sleep in till 11 o’clock. But before I knew it, it was 1 o’clock. It won’t happen again. Well, we’re happy that you’re here now. Now all we have to do is check our timetable and choose a day that we can all rehearse together. I have singing lessons on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Fridays are no good for me. I go swimming with my friends on Fridays. Well, I can’t rehearse on Sundays because we always visit my grandmother on Sundays. Mum said that I can only get out of it this one time. Mondays are bad for me because I take Arabic lessons after school. On Wednesdays I have dance class. Can we rehearse on Saturdays? I’ll have to ask my parents. But I think it will be all right. As long as I’m home by 6 o’clock. I like to watch Britain’s Got Talent on television with my mum. I can start right after vlogging. Saturdays are great for me but I can’t stay out after dark. That’s okay. I have to be home for dinner or else my mum will go mad. Saturday night is game night. We always play board games then. Mum works out on Saturdays so that’s perfect. But I’ll ask her, just in case. Great! Now that we’re here let’s see what kind of music we want to make!

How do we make mum sound interesting? Nathan I don’t know. Does your mum have hobbies? Sam She does yoga and works out a lot. She is in good shape. And she’s pretty. Do men care about that? Nathan I’m sure they just like women to be healthy. I don’t think looks are that important. It’s the inside that counts. Sam My mum is clever. She is also very kind. We have to make that clear. Nathan What’s your mum’s job? Sam She is a journalist. Nathan Wow! That’s a great job! Does she travel much? Sam Yes. I am home alone quite often, but I don’t mind. Nathan What is your mum’s type? Get to know your match before meeting in person Be sure you aren’t being catfished before meeting up with someone you meet on the dating site. If you feel like something isn’t right, don’t meet up. Video chatting is also a good way to see that the person is who they say they are. If someone doesn’t want to Skype or FaceTime, they could be hiding something. Even if they have a clever excuse.
ki
20
Be safe on social media Some dating sites connect through Facebook. They can show some of your public information to people. Update your Facebook and other social accounts to share as little information as possible.
em

5
Keep your identity safe Bad people can try to steal your identity. Don’t send bank information or any usernames and passwords to anyone you meet online. Never send money, even if the person says it’s an emergency. Also, don’t tell your full names, birthdates, addresses or other personal information until you feel like you know and trust the person you are talking to.
4
In
Go on safe dates Go on the date during daylight hours and in a public place. Don’t invite a date to your home, and don’t go to your dates’ house at first. Tell friends or family where you are going. Always have an exit plan. Don’t get in a car with your date until you know and trust them. If you can, go on a group date.
5
Trust your gut If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. If something is too good to be true, it probably isn’t.
to trust: vertrouwen to connect: verbinding maken to catfish: doen alsof je iemand anders bent a public place: een openbare plaats to trust your gut: vertrouwen op jouw gevoel

It’s really not that difficult, mum. You just swipe left if you don’t like someone and swipe right if you do. Oh Sam. This really is sweet of you, but you shouldn’t make profiles for other people. And why do I need this profile? I don’t know if I am ready to start dating. Of course you are, mum. Do you want to be alone forever? No, not forever. I just don’t know if I have time for a relationship. Then you must make time. You can’t stay home with me all the time. You need something exciting in your life. Maybe you’re right. I’m still young, you know. Yeah, mum. You’re very young. Watch it, you! Just kidding. I think you’re beautiful, funny and easy to talk to. You’re a real catch, if you ask me. Thanks, sweetheart. So, what do we do now? I just need to ask a few questions to complete your profile. What is your favourite film? Well, you know I love romantic films. My favourite is probably P.S. I love you. Okay. Why do you like that one? Because it makes me cry every time I see it. Mum, you’re such a softy. Where do you like to go on holiday? Sam, we never go on holiday. I have to work during most holidays. Then where do you like to travel to for work? I love South America. I’m especially fond of Brazil. Who is your idol? If you have one? I don’t really have an idol. I’m a big fan of Louis Theroux. Who is that? What do you mean? He’s the best documentary maker there is! Uhmm … I’m not sure people will find that interesting mum. I know I don’t. Well, I don’t want to date someone your age, do I? Okay okay. Last question: What do you look for in a man?

This month there is a new report in Life magazine about online dating. It says most Americans think online dating is a good way to meet people. Almost 60 per cent of Internet users say there is nothing wrong with trying to find a partner on the Internet. Around one in ten Americans uses online dating websites. 11 per cent of people met their partner online. However, some people think the Internet does not help with marriage. Around 32 per cent of people agree that ‘online dating keeps people from building a real relationship because they always have a choice of new people to date’. Sociologist Dr Kevin Lewis of the University of California says that women must be careful with online dates. ‘For women, there are a lot of guys who are just creepy.’ He also says that men can have problems finding a date: ‘They can't get a woman to answer because women get so many messages.’

Sam Hi guys! What are you doing? Morgan Sam! Dario! Hey! We found a very healthy and delicious looking recipe online and we are trying to make it. What dish are you making? Sam Morgan We are making fried chicken with rice, egg, a pepper, mushrooms and onion. Dario Are those all the ingredients you need? Morgan We also need some basic cooking ingredients like oil, salt, pepper and some other spices. Oh, and don’t forget the fresh garlic! Dario Can we help you with the cooking? We don’t have anything else to do anyway. Grace Sure! Dario, take two eggs and mix them together, then cut the mushrooms up. Morgan Sam, can you cut the pepper up? No problem! Shall I also cut the onions up when I'm done with Sam the pepper? Morgan Yes please, I hate cutting onions! Grace What do I have to do, Morgan? Morgan First, take a pot and cook the rice, then take a pan and melt the butter, finally fry the veggies in a pan. I’m starting on the sauce. Give me that spoon, please. Grace Aye, aye, Chef, but could you please stop bossing us around? Morgan Oops! Sorry, Grace! Sam I have done the pepper and the onions. Is there something else that I can do? Morgan Could you please set the table, Sam? Dinner will be ready in a few minutes and then we can eat. Sam Where can I find the plates, Grace? Grace The plates are in the cupboard over there. Spoons, forks and knives are in the first drawer. Sam All done! Morgan Perfect timing! Dinner’s ready!

This is really good, Morgan! I would even say it is delicious! Where did you learn to cook so well? Thank you, Dario! Believe it or not, I usually just watch YouTube videos about cooking. You’re really good! Dario is right! We could help you! Let’s start by making the first photo for your Instagram! Dario, take that cutting board. Sam can you clean this table? I will take those fresh vegetables to use as decoration. Calm down, you guys! Shouldn’t we think about a name first? We should have a plan before we start. First of all, if I’m doing this, I want to show a lot of different types of food: vegetarian, healthy, quick and easy, salty, sweet … Now let’s think about a name … Morgan’s kitchen? FoodwithMorgan? Don’t be so predictable! We need something more fun. You think about the name. I will make sure that this dish looks amazing in the picture. I only need these napkins here and I’m good to go. And what do you think about … ? Don’t make so much noise, Grace! But, yes! That’s perfect! Go for it, Morgan! I will send you the picture so you can upload it! Dario, what are you doing? I was just thinking … Now that Morgan knows a bit about cooking, maybe she can also try some of the kitchen hacks and see whether they really work? Kitchen what? Kitchen hacks. Tricks to make some things easier in the kitchen. Can’t we do that together? I don’t want to be in front of a camera all by myself! Dario can be your assistant. He loves being in the spotlight! Read the article ‘Meat from fruit’.
Meat from fruit 1
Jackfruit is a huge spiky fruit that has many small bulbs with yellow flesh inside the shell. When jackfruit is ripe, it tastes sweet; however, when it is unripe, it has no particular flavour. Its texture is quite similar to the consistency of real meat, and this makes jackfruit perfect for plant-based meat dishes like barbecued pulled pork.

In October, Thailand celebrated the 9-day vegetarian festival when many people give up eating animal products, and more people are going meatless for longer and more frequently. Foodlover 5 May, 2019 We visited this restaurant with our kids after a nice day in town. My kids really liked the food, the adults on the other hand … not so much. Our starter was very dry and bland. Not the best start of our meal, but we still had hope for the main dish. Oh boy, we were wrong! The tortillas were stale and the chicken just tasted so bad! I’m happy the kids had a good time, but I am not going back!

Oh yes, dear, I would love some more biscuits to go with this lovely tea! Oh, stop it, Dario! We don’t sound like that at all. And besides, each country has their own good and bad sides. Honestly, I do think some bad sides are worse than others, but let’s not talk about that right now. Back to talking about food, I kind of liked that topic better. A lot of English-speaking countries are part of the Commonwealth. But what is this Commonwealth thing? Read the text. The Commonwealth of Nations (also known only as "Commonwealth") is a confederation of countries. There are 54 member countries of the Commonwealth. A few examples are: The United Kingdom, India, New Zealand and Jamaica.
These countries have come together to form an association with some common goals. Such common goals include: • to increase economic cooperation among the member countries; • to encourage democracy in the member countries; • to ensure that member countries follow human rights.
In

The Commonwealth of Nations is not a political organization. The King or Queen of England is not only the head of the Commonwealth, they are also head of state of 16 Commonwealth countries, for example Canada and Australia. However, the United Kingdom does not have any direct or indirect control over these countries. In fact, almost all the 54 members are independent countries with their own governments.

a confederation: een samenwerkingsverband a head of state: een staatshoofd independent: onafhankelijk common: gemeen(schappelijk) to increase: vergroten a cooperation: een samenwerking to encourage: aanmoedigen to ensure: verzekeren the population: het bevolkingsaantal
• The total population of all the 54 countries of the Commonwealth is about 2.245 billion. That is almost a third of the population of the whole world. About half of these live in India. • The four largest Commonwealth nations by population are India at 1.3 billion, Pakistan at 196 million, Nigeria at 174 million, and Bangladesh at 162 million. • Tuvalu and Nauru are the smallest members, each with less than 11,000 people. • The economy of these countries is about 16 % of the world economy.

Hi Sam! What’s up? You don’t look very happy. I’m not! You know last week my mum’s new boyfriend Thomas and his daughter moved in with us? Now I have to share my bedroom with my stepsister until they have changed our attic into my new bedroom. That must be difficult for you. What is she like? Olivia is okay, but she is a lot younger than I. She looks a lot like her father. But it is hard to share one bedroom. I don’t have any privacy and her toys are everywhere. She doesn’t pick them up and tidy up our room, so I have to do it when I want to hoover. Can’t you tell her to tidy up? I do! But she tells me she will do it when she has finished playing on her laptop. But it takes too long and I don’t want to wait. Well, at least she makes her bed! Hahaha, Sam, Little Miss Tidy. Who would have thought! But hey, look at it this way: you don’t have to do all the chores by yourself anymore! Haha, you’re right. I’m glad Thomas is not the type of man who thinks women should do household chores while the man reads his newspaper. He is very kind. You can ask him anything! Sounds like a great man! My father always says: we all live in this house, we all make it dirty, so it’s only normal to clean up after ourselves. Oh, Dario, can you send your father over to my house? My parents never agree about the chores. My father takes care of the garden and all our animals. He doesn’t do any chores inside! He doesn’t even clear his part of the table! Oh, I can’t listen to their fights anymore!

My life had never been much like a fairy tale. I’d had no magical wishes come true, but no real tragedy, either. My dad had an affair and left Mama and me when I was eight, but other than that, I’d had it pretty good. I’m sort of pretty – long, wavy black hair and smooth golden-brown skin, thanks to the Chilean heritage on my mother’s side. But I have my dad’s big, bright-blue eyes. I’m sort of smart – mostly A’s without ever having to study much. And I’m sort of popular – not exactly the prom queen, but never without my friends or a date on Saturday night, either. I may have grown up without a father, but my mom was my best friend and that was good enough for me. Life, in general, was good enough. Then, last November my mom decided to surprise me with a weekend ski trip to Vermont for my birthday, and I got my first real dose of character-building tragedy.

Cinder458, or just Cinder to me, is my best friend in the whole world beside my mom, even though I’ve never met him. I’ve never even spoken to him on the phone. We’ve been e-mailing nonstop since he stumbled across my blog, Ellamara’s Words Of Wisdom, about two years ago. My blog is a book and movie review blog. I started it when I was fifteen, and my third blogaversary was indeed coming up soon. The name Ellamara is in honor of my favorite character in my favorite book series, The Cinder Chronicles. It’s a fantasy series written in the seventies and had become one of the most cherished stories in modern literature. Hollywood is finally making the first book, The Druid Prince, into a movie. Ellamara is also my name. My mother read the books when she was a girl and loved them so much that she named me after the mysterious druid priestess. I was proud of the name, and of my mom for loving Ellamara best instead of liking the warrior princess Ratana like everyone else.

“Ellamara! Welcome to our home, sweetie.” Jennifer Coleman had to be the most beautiful woman in all of Los Angeles. Hair as golden as the sun, eyes as blue as the sky, and lashes that reached all the way to the moon. Her legs were long, her waist was tiny, and her giant boobs were perfectly round and perky. Bombshell was the only word that came to mind. I don’t know why I found her beauty surprising. I knew she was a professional model – print and commercials, not fashion. She did things like shampoo and skin cream commercials, so she actually looked healthy and not skinnier than a crack addict. (…) Jennifer’s smile turned sympathetic. “You must be so tired, you poor thing.” I swallowed back annoyance and forced a smile. I hated people’s pity as much as I hated their stares, if not more. Before I had to figure out something to say, my two new stepsisters came bursting through the front door. “Girls, you’re late.” Jennifer sounded irritated, but she’d plastered that big, phony smile back on her face. “Look who’s home!” The two sisters slammed into each other as they came to an abrupt halt. They were twins. Not identical, I didn’t think, but they looked so similar that if not for the haircuts, I bet I’d still mix them up. I knew from pictures Dad had showed me that Juliette was the one with long blonde locks that fell in silky waves halfway down her back, while Anastasia had a sleek, angled bob that swept across her face and came to a sharp stop at her chin. It was so perfectly coiffed that she looked as if she’d stepped straight out of a hairstyle magazine. Both girls were as gorgeous as their mother – same blonde hair, blue eyes, and perfect figures. And they were both so tall! I’m a modest five foot six, and they both towered over me. Of course, they were both wearing heels that gave them at least four extra inches, but I bet they were still both pushing five-ten without the shoes. They were over a year younger than me, but could easily pass for twenty-one. Not bothering with any kind of hello, Anastacia lifted a hand to her chest. “Oh man, I’m so glad your face isn’t messed up.” Juliette nodded, eyes wide. “Totally. We looked up pictures online of burn victims, and, like, all of them had these hideous scars on their faces. It was so gross.” My dad and Jennifer let out matching nervous laughs and went to stand by the twins. “Girls,” Jennifer admonished mildly, “it’s not polite to talk about people’s deformities.” I flinched at the term. Was that what she thought of me? That I was deformed? My face may have been lucky, but my shoulder down the right half of my body and everything from my waist down was covered with thick, raised pink scars that popped in contrast to my naturally-tanned skin. My dad pulled both girls close to his sides, tucking one into each arm. In their heels they stood at almost the same height as his six feet one inches. I remembered him being a decent-looking man, but he was really quite handsome standing next to his picture-perfect family. He still had a full head of thick brown hair, and, of course, my bright blue eyes. “Honey, these are my daughters, Anastasia and Juliette. Girls, this is your new stepsister, Ellamara.”

Hi guys! Hi Ali. What’s up? You look very excited. I am! My parents are planning to go on holiday by plane and I can stay home alone. How cool is that? Home alone? Not my cup of tea! Why is that such a good news? Are you going to play videogames all day and night? Of course not, Layla! I was thinking … what about going on holiday together? All of us? That’s not a bad idea, but I don’t think our parents are going to let us fly all by ourselves. Yeah … and I don’t think we can afford a plane ticket and a hotel room too, Sam. Don’t panic, Grace! We need to come up with an idea that is not expensive. So, no B & B, guest house or cottage then. We could go to a youth hostel? That’s budget-friendly. Or we could go camping! There are lots of campsites in the UK. And we could save on transport if we go by train or by bus. Group fares are so much cheaper. Great idea, Wilson! I’m sure we can find enough tents and camping gear. Or we can rent a caravan? First, we need to decide where we want to go to. What destination are we going to choose? a pebble: een kiezelsteen That depends on what we want to do. I really want to go to the beach if it’s sunny! A sandy beach! I’ve had enough of these pebbles on Brighton beach. I’m with you, Grace! And I would like to do at least one cultural activity. I prefer real camping in the woods near a river where we can fish and swim or kayak.

Stunning retreat “We stayed in the Shepherd’s Parlour hut and it was truly amazing. The interior was five star and there was a lovely space outside overlooking the lake. This hut had its own hot tub, unlike the others, so it’s more expensive. As such, it was a bit of a shock to find we were asked to pay for fire logs for the hot tub. These heat logs cost £2.50 each from the local shop but we were asked for £10 every time we used the tub to cover the log costs. TOP TIP: Go buy your own!

We’ve still given it 5 stars because this niggle did not take away from the awesome two days we had here.” Date of stay: December 2020 Room Tip: The Shepherd’s Parlour is worth the extra.
r
We really thought for the extra money the firewood should be complimentary. You got a basket of logs as a starter, but it is nowhere near enough. To get the hot tub up to the right temperature, you need more than their ‘recommended’ number… which means £10 soon turns into £20…£30...
