Professor Jan Bronner. Niki de Saint Phalle occupies a place all of her own within the worldwide company of feminine sculpture, because not many of her female colleagues would have started out as a photo model, let alone have graced the front cover of Vogue. And in her subject choices and imagery too, Niki’s sculpture was absolutely unique. While she was herself as skinny as a rake, with her fully plastic sculptures she raised a monument to modern woman, to the contemporary primeval mother Gaia, dressed in a garish swimsuit and thus not naked as Maillol wanted. In a seemingly endless variation in style, size and choice of material, Niki constructed her modern version of the Venus of Willendorf, weightless, dancing sprightly into the world. Often they bear the name ‘Nana’ and appear to be cheerful at first sight, but anyone who has read the novel of the same name by Émile Zola from 1880 will know that disaster is always just around the corner. The biography of Niki supplies the ingredients for the bipolar character of her work, in which the lust for life belies a bitter undercurrent. Niki’s sculpture is so recognisable, so unique and so beloved that 7

‘Most people don’t see the edginess in my work. They think it’s all fantasy and whimsy.’ –

NIK I D E SA INT PH A LLE,

L.A . TIMES , 23 MEI 2002

Despite the current popularity of her cheerful, colourful sculptures, Niki de Saint Phalle’s work was not received positively right from the outset. Even after she became the only woman to join the Nouveaux Réalisme art movement, it still took a while before the general public embraced her work. Now she is one of the most renowned artists of the twentieth century, with a highly recognisable oeuvre that ties in closely with the hippie movement of the sixties in which ‘freedom, equality’ and ‘love, peace and understanding’ predominated. The corresponding themes of free love, antiwar rhetoric and equality for women can all be found in her work. Her creations thereby present a beautiful portrait of an era of the sixties and seventies, permeated as these years were by playfulness, informality and experimentalism. Her passion for sculpture and her fight for women’s rights are recognised around the world. Right up to the present day she is a source of inspiration for many. On 29 October 1930 she was born as Catherine Marie-Agnès in Neuilly-sur-Seine in France, as the second of five children. Her father André Marie Fal de Saint Phalle came from an old French aristocratic family and her mother Jeanne Jacqueline Harper was of American origin. As a result of the international stock market crash in 1929 the family lost a large portion of its fortune, which led to Marie-Agnès being lodged temporarily with her paternal grandparents in the Nièvre department in Burgundy. Not until 1933 was she reunited with her parents, who had in the meantime moved to Greenwich, Connecticut in the United States. After having been away from the children for so long her mother left a large part of their upbringing to a governess with the nickname ‘Nana’. From 1934 Marie-Agnès received the nickname Niki from her mother that she would continue to use for the rest of her life. The overriding image of Niki de Saint Phalle’s so cheerfulseeming oeuvre stems largely from a childhood traumatised by incest that she was silent about for many years. Her 9
