Voorwoord Minke Schat, directeur Museum Panorama Mesdag

Foreword Minke Schat, director Museum Panorama Mesdag

A masterful painter, a free spirit, driven and with a passion for travel—that was Betzy Akersloot-Berg—as a person and as an artist. She was a woman who refused to be constrained by the expectations of her time. Not for her the small-scale or the conventional, but the grand gesture: the sea, the rocks, the storm, the light and the endless horizon. Her life’s motto—Arbeid er livets lyspunkt (Working is the bright spot of life)—encapsulates her indomitable dedication and her profound conviction that art was life itself.

It is time to rediscover Betzy Akersloot-Berg, to take a fresh look at her life and work, and to appreciate her value. Time to restore her to the place she occupied during her life with so much conviction, energy and talent. She was a revered artist In Norway and in the Netherlands. She exhibited internationally, was praised by critics and moved in prominent artistic circles. Yet, after her death she did not receive the lasting recognition that her artistry merits. We aim to fundamentally change that with this overview of the life and work of Betzy Akersloot-Berg. Not merely by devoting renewed attention to her work, but by showcasing her artistic significance. As a head-strong artist, with her own agenda, an exceptional enthusiasm for work and an eye for the overwhelming power of nature. It is an honour for Museum Panorama Mesdag to present this retrospective in collaboration with Museum Tromp’s Huys and the Norwegian museums in Tromsø. The story of Betzy Akersloot-Berg links Norway and the Netherlands, Tromsø, The Hague, Scheveningen and Vlieland. It is not by chance that this long-overdue recognition is taking place in Museum Panorama Mesdag; in 1885, Akersloot-Berg came to The Hague to further hone her skills in painting the sea and to meet Hendrik Willem Mesdag. His seascapes made such a deep impression on her in Vienna that she travelled to the Netherlands. Here, near Scheveningen, she not only

In diezelfde geest handelen wij vandaag opnieuw.

found artistic inspiration, but friendship, encouragement and recognition as well. Hendrik Willem Mesdag advised her, introduced her to his network, and opened doors to art dealers, exhibitions and fellow artists. She gained access to an artistic world where her talent was recognized and taken seriously. Sientje Mesdag-van Houten also played a significant role in her life. The bond with the artistic couple became an intimate, lifelong connection. This is why this major showcase for Akersloot-Berg in Museum Panorama Mesdag and the accompanying publication form a natural continuation of something that began here nearly a century and a half ago. The Mesdags championed talented artists. They collected, supported, encouraged and surrounded themselves with people whose artistry they admired. We are acting in that same spirit again today. Following her death, AkerslootBerg’s body of work became scattered across various countries, museums, private collections and recollections. By joining forces, we are bringing it all together once more. It has been a magnificent quest to portray her oeuvre as comprehensively as possible, to further investigate her life story, to reveal her artistic development and to give her the place she deserves in both Norwegian and Dutch art history. Through her work, Betzy Akersloot-Berg reveals how small mankind can be compared to the sea, wind and rocks, yet simultaneously how vast human imagination is. You experience that power in Tromsø. There, in the far north, you step right into her paintings. The strong light, the cold, the rocky coasts, the water which constantly changes colour and the horizon that always seems close by: you can vividly imagine why this environment inspired Akersloot-Berg so deeply. The landscape there compels you to look. To keep looking. That same sense of recognition can be experienced on Vlieland, where Betzy Akersloot-Berg eventually settled with her husband, Gooswinus Akersloot. Here, too, the painted world remains palpable. Anyone looking at the horizon on Vlieland experiences what Betzy Akersloot-Berg must have seen: a world that never stands still, always inviting us to look and marvel again. The Wadden island, the unique light, the endless skies, the turbulent North Sea, the wind and the silence. This tribute to Betzy Akersloot-Berg was made possible through a unique international collaboration and the dedication of many. Museum Panorama Mesdag, the Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum and Perspektivet Museum in Tromsø, and Museum Tromp’s Huys on Vlieland proudly combined their knowledge, collections, stories and networks. One of a kind.

With this retrospective, we bring Betzy Akersloot-Berg back into the glare of the spotlight: as a powerful, headstrong and internationally oriented artist, deeply connected to nature and totally dedicated to her craft. You would have wanted to know her, to have walked along the coast with her while she gazed at the changing sky, the breaking waves and the light on the water. A masterful painter. A daring lady. One of a kind. It is a privilege to be allowed to tell her story again.

Magnum opus and rediscovery

Woord vooraf Peter Schalk, directeur Museum Tromp’s Huys

Foreword Peter Schalk, director Museum Tromp’s Huys

As a museum employee, you often unknowingly stand on the shoulders of an artist. For the duration of one exhibition, you are, ideally, captivated by the life and work of someone you think you know well, someone you can comprehend. You understand the artist's motivations and the motives behind the works you exhibit. You benefit from the artist's success; you grow from the attention and, ultimately, from the success that ‘your’ exhibition achieves. However fantastic the artist may be, they really always play a temporary role. After an exhibition, the attention fades, and a new artist claims the spotlight: different work, new amazement.

Unless, like us, you work day in and day out in the artist’s house. In our case, Tromp’s Huys, the home of Betzy Akersloot-Berg. On Vlieland, every day we have the privilege of stepping into a time machine that takes you back to the era in which Betzy Akersloot-Berg and her husband Gooswinus Akersloot lived and worked. When you have been working at the museum for a while, the main characters start to come to life. You understand a lot, but not everything, of their lives, and with that grows the respect for the single-minded Betzy – as the islanders fondly call her – her quality, and her versatility as a marine painter. Gooswinus’s seemingly submissive role also becomes clear. A strong man was at the side of the painter, who was quite famous at the time. This growing knowledge and appreciation for the couple prompts our museum team to share their story, above all as a memorable part of Vlieland’s history.

Magnum opus en herontdekking

Magnum opus and rediscovery

When Betzy Akersloot-Berg and her husband came to live on Vlieland in 1896, they were regarded as a ‘seaside visitors’. The kind of people who arrive and just like the island for a few days. The Vlielanders and islanders didn’t expect that their stay would last long, but the couple quickly started to appreciate the island for its true merits. Peace and space. Sea and other forms of nature in abundance to paint. It is not without reason that they stayed. Their eternal resting place in the local cemetery is evidence of their great love of the island.

It took some time before the couple's role in the village became clear. A former mayor and consul and his wife, the painter with missionary motives, were not easily accepted in the community. Betzy remained something of an oddball, but nevertheless established herself within the ranks of the village notables. Acceptance went somewhat better for Gooswinus—socially more adept than his wife. This led to a stay of decades on the island. Appreciation for Betzy grew over time, above all due to her attitude towards life. Hard work was her motto, and this was valued on Vlieland. Her pious disposition may also have met with approval, although her choice not to become part of the church community on Vlieland raised questions. Betzy Akersloot-Berg bequeathed a magnificent oeuvre to Vlieland and to the entire Netherlands. Although there was already international recognition during her lifetime, attention waned after her death in 1922. It was not until the 21st century that appreciation for Akersloot-Berg’s work steadily increased. It is fantastic that she is being rediscovered now. Connoisseurs, including Minke Schat, the enthusiastic director of Museum Panorama Mesdag, have known this for a long time. And it is a pleasure to be able to showcase these kinds of discoveries in the context of great painters such as Hendrik Willem Mesdag and his wife Sientje Mesdag-van Houten, and the other artists represented in Museum Panorama Mesdag. In addition to their artistic value, much of the work also has documentary significance. Betzy made countless drawings and paintings of noteworthy events. Alongside fantastic landscapes and seascapes, this gave rise to remarkable and unsettling scenes: exploding sea mines, a drowned person on the beach, German zeppelins in the Vlieland sky and stranded ships in a fierce storm. These works are important historical images of the turbulent years following the turn of the century and the prelude to the First World War. Museum Tromp’s Huys manages and exhibits the work of Betzy Akersloot-Berg; a treasure trove owned by the municipality of Vlieland. The museum also tells the history

The quality of Betzy’s art is reflected on Vlieland. The museum is attracting an ever-increasing number of visitors with the collection and the extraordinary life story of the couple. We are convinced that many more people will be moved when they become acquainted with the stories of this remarkable artist.

More than 100 years after Betzy Akersloot-Berg’s death, we are indebted to her. The exhibition in Museum Panorama Mesdag, for which we are immensely grateful and proud, represents a magnum opus for the enthusiastic team at Museum Tromp’s Huys, and for you, most probably a discovery, or perhaps a rediscovery, of a great talent and an extraordinary artist.
