The Oracle of the Dryad Hans van Dyck A long-awaited book, written by a passionate narrator and distinguished expert on nature An exciting search to unravel the biological complexity on Earth How an intensive study of butterflies reveals the enthralling secrets of life This is a fascinating story about butterflies. From the purpose of their wing colours to their mobility issues. From the famine they suffer in our people-oriented landscapes to the analysis of the winners and losers of climate change. But this book is also about people. It combines Van Dyck’s expertise and his own metamorphosis from butterfly boy to butterfly enthusiast. It is a story about wonder and passion for science. About engineers using butterflies as an inspiration for technical innovations and artists who are inspired by their colours and wonderful metamorphosis. This eventually leads us to a fascinating ‘butterfly paradox’: do we get a broader outlook on our planet by focusing on these tiny animals?

155 x 240 mm | 304 pages | # words paperback with flaps | all rights available

Throughout Van Dyck’s book, it is primarily one special butterfly – the speckled wood or Pararge aegeria – that acts as the common thread. ‘Aegeria’ refers to a nymph and prophetess in Roman mythology. She was the protector of Rome who advised her husband, king Numa Popilius and inspired the apt title of this book.

Hans Van Dyck is a biologist. In 1997, he obtained his PhD thesis on the behavioural patterns of butterflies. Since 2004, he has been managing his own research team at the Earth & Life Institute of UC Leuven (Louvain-la-Neuve) as a professor in Behavioural Ecology and Environmental Management. The Discovery of Nature Hans Mulder Magnificent book about the evolution of our views on nature Illustrated with unique images from historical collections The ideal gift for lovers of nature and history From the early sixteenth century onwards, more and more studies were published in Europe with a very lively depiction of plants and animals. In the centuries that followed, more and more research into the natural world (from very large to very small) was conducted and the art of depicting this wondrous nature was perfected. Many of the most important natural history manuscripts, printed books, drawings and watercolours can be found in the Artis Library, part of the Allard Pierson, the collections of the University of Amsterdam. With the help of this material, the author unfolds twenty stories. About dragons, insects, bacteria, birds and much more. The result is an entertaining and richly illustrated book. The discoveries described are supported by numerous anecdotes about the special men and women who, between 1500 and 1900, helped us understand the life around us and that of our own species so much better.

Why We Are All Astronauts Nancy Vermeulen Finally, a clear view on what space has to offer We find ourselves at the eve of an actual space revolution that will determine our future Will we ever move to space? To whom do the planets actually belong? Will we all become astronauts? According to the expert Nancy Vermeulen, this is a fact beyond dispute. But are we ready for a space economy, for commercial space travel, weightless production processes and all other opportunities and challenges that are awaiting us on the other side of the atmosphere? And will we manage to put public interest above our own greed and political prowess? This unbelievably interesting and intriguing book presents the relevance of space travel from a scientific perspective, but also from a historical, sociological and even a philosophical angle that is critical of our society. It highlights the future of mankind which, in one way or another, will take place in space.

Nancy Vermeulen is a commercial pilot instructor and a scientist who specializes in physics and astronomy. She was the commander of a Mars-simulation in Utah and has participated in the ESA-astronaut-selection of 2008. Nowadays, she is the head of her own Space Training Academy. She considers it to be her personal mission to bring the universe closer to the people and vice versa. She regularly writes for scientific magazines.

The Rise against Lukashenko Christophe Brackx A witness testimony of the uprising against Lukashenko in Belarus A captivating account of electoral fraud and repression in Europe’s most unknown country A story about a disconnected tyrant and the upheaval of a new generation of Belarusians Belarus is a country where the KGB still exists and the October Revolution is still celebrated, where the Holocaust is unmentioned and where Stalin is still honoured. A country where it is forbidden to demonstrate, resign or be unemployed and where there are even laws against applauding. On the 9th of August 2020, Alexander Lukashenko was ‘re-elected’ President of Belarus for the sixth time. Once again, the election was grotesquely rigged. This has, subsequently, unleashed a series of demonstrations that would end up being the most deadly protests in recent Belarusian history. It is the story of a new geenration of Belarusians faced by a disconnected tyrant. It shows the devastating outcome of a failed Soviet State that was scarred by a nuclear drama, that remains under strong influence by Russia's new czar and that is still suffering under a repression apparatus.

Cobalt Blues Erik Bruyland Congo’s Panama papers: why such a rich country is still so poor A sharp accusation of the theft of Congo’s raw materials An important contribution to the Congo debate: about the role and responsibility of Belgium in the postcolonial era In Cobalt Blues, journalist Erik Bruyland focuses on the postcolonial history of Congo, his country of birth. Why is a rich country still so poor? Through passionate investigative journalism, Bruyland unveals how opportunists and speculators jump onto Congo’s natural resources like vultures. He unravels the financial and economic merry-go-rounds and the geopolitical moves that lead to the country's tragedy: its blue gold is flowing to offshore companies while the black sweat is gushing for nothing. And all of this to soothe our hunger for smartphones and batteries.

Children are often amazed. Why is the sea blue? Why is it dark at night? Why is someone bald? Gradually, our curiosity disappears, and that is a shame. Wonder is what gives our lives its colour. It helps us broaden our horizons and encourages us to question false truths. In A Tribute to Wonder, Caroline Pauwels pleads that we should all look at the world from a child's point of view.

Dominance is the preservation of certain frames of mind and distributions of power. Fortunately, there have always been people who dare to go against the status quo. Warda El-Kaddouri kicks off this discussion by zooming in on literature and dominance.

More than Me Kristin Verellen Poems by Kristin Verellen in dialogue with ancient verses from the Upanishads A poetic merge of an age old, collective wisdom with the intimate thoughts, in both pictures and texts, of the author The Upanishads are amongst the oldest texts from world literature with a surprisingly topical message of connection Kristin Verellen lets her drawings and poems engage in dialogue with verses from the Upanishads: spiritual-philosophical texts from a long time ago that lie at the foundation of philosophy, science, spirituality and yoga in East and West. Both question the relationship between the I and everything that is. Who am I? What is the nature of the world? What do happiness, fulfilment and freedom consist of? Now, just like back then, there is a desire for a wider conscience, for the experience that we are all deeply intertwined with one another, with everything, always.

Bieke Geenen Most highly sensitive children have a highly sensitive parent Built around nine triggers that can cause higly sensitive parents to be out of balance Full of practical tips and specific examples High sensitivity seems to be hereditary to a great extent. This doesn’t make parenting easy. On the contrary. Because it’s not only your child who is highly sensitive (which demands a lot of extra care) but also you - as a parent - have to take your pitfalls and triggers into account. It is not easy to stay balanced when you are a highly sensitive person yourself. High sensitivity shouldn't cause any difficulties if you are able to recognize the signs and know how to act. In this book, coach Bieke Geenen explains which 9 triggers can cause highly sensitive people to lose their balance (such as criticism, tiredness, worrying and overstimulation). She provides them with precise measures on how to handle their high sensitivity and that of their child.

Bieke Geenen is drama therapist and coach. She is a highly sensitive mother herself, and she has a highly sensitive son. So she knows like no other how difficult it is to keep her family in balance. She daily counsels highly sensitive parents by giving tips to handle their high sensitivity.

A Three Step Guide towards a Healthy Back Christophe Wolfs What can you do yourself to prevent and reduce back pain? A holistic approach to a life without pain An approach that is based on two pillars: increase your physical resilience and control your physical demands For a high percentage of people a bad posture, continued stress and weight issues inevitably lead to back pain. From that moment onwards, you find yourself in a vicious cycle: because you are in pain, you move less and, consequently, your blood circulation is less stimulated. The result? Oxygen and nutrients barely make it to your tissue and waste products remain there, which results in an overstimulation of your nervous system and more pain. Christophe Wolfs shows how you can also make that cycle turn in another, more positive direction. Through feasible adjustments of your daily routine, you can radically decrease that harmful stress on your back. This way, you will be able to move more often, reduce pain as well work on your general health.

Christophe Wolfs is a physiotherapist and osteopath. He has been successfully treating patients with chronic back troubles for many years. Now, he has put this expertise into an immediately applicable three-step-method, in which he approaches back troubles in a holistic way.

Our society has become one of the highest highs, of a continuous striving to do better, go further, fly higher. What is worse: we hardly ever think about the fact that those highs do not make up for the lows. We do not realise that there is a difference between what makes us happy for a short period of time and what gives meaning to our lives. But how are we to learn to make that distinction again if we can no longer fall back on the number of likes and comments we receive online? What can we gain from dealing with the ups and downs of life – and with each other – in a more truthful way? And what does it really mean to ‘be happy’?

It has become a commodity. The customer now regards it as the most normal thing in the world to have access to limitless products and services with just a single click of a mouse. From too big to fail to slower, smaller and more humane Geert Noels The long-awaited new book of economist Geert Noels Our world suffers from a fundamental disease that derails everything: gigantism How do we make our economy healthy again? Our world suffers from gigantism. Leading companies and organisations keep getting bigger and more powerful. This Champions’ League effect kills healthy competition, hampers sustainable growth and oppresses mankind, with diseases of affluence such as burnout or obesity as a result. A healthy future for our economy will be a smaller, slower and humane one. No utopian economy, but an economy that takes into account all the dimensions of mankind: the social, the ecological and the economical. An economy that isn’t led by an obsession with growth that burdens the next generation with debts, causes social distortions and heavily harms the environment. Noels advocates in ten steps to adjust the rules of the game to tame the giants and to give the individual a place in the world economy again.

Geert Noels is a macroeconomist and a popular opinion maker for financial and economic subjects. 100,000 people follow him on Twitter. In this book, Toon Verlinden and Hans Van de Water explain how to bring structure to your online presentation, what to pay attention to when drawing up your story, and how to ensure a strong performance. A well-organised guide that helps you avoid typical pitfalls, so that you give the best possible online presentation even in difficult circumstances.
