Japan Sketches from life Luk Van Haute Interest in Japan and its culture is bigger than ever Japanologist and Murakami translator Luk Van Haute nuances clichĂŠs For anyone who truly wants to get to know Japan Japan is 'in'. In 2017 Japan received 30 million visitors for the first time. The popularity of the Japanese kitchen is growing, with sushi places everywhere. Almost every western country has a Japanese film festival, and nowadays it's impossible to imagine popular culture without manga and anime, labelled as 'Cool Japan'. However, the news coverage of Japan is sporadic and hasty, mainly limited to reports about 'the weird Japanese people'. Luk Van Haute sketches a nuanced portrait of Japan in a personal and narrative style. The stories usually start from a meeting with a familiar or unfamiliar Japanese person, an experience at a certain place, a novel or story (sometimes translated by himself), and so on. This way, he hopes to shine a light on the bigger picture, and to show Japan's social and cultural diversity. The perfect book to get insight into the true nature of the Japanese culture, provided with the necessary historical interpretation and social framework. In doing so the specific stories make a sample card of the Japanese society.

Luk Van Haute lived in Japan from 1986 until 1992, where he a.o. studied Japanese literature at the University of Tokyo and was active in the film industry. Since then he has spent a few weeks or months in Japan almost every year. He is the translator of the work of Haruki Murakami and numerous other Japanese authors, and has been awarded for his anthology Liefdesdood in Kamara en andere Japanse verhalen. Van Haute is the author of numerous articles about Japanese society for various newspapers and magazines.

TOWER ROW Architect Gerritt’s design for a row of 9 skyscrapers was rejected by his client De Vries as boring. For aesthetic reasons, De Vries made this request: The towers must be arranged in a row and each must be of different height, but no more than 3 are allowed to go in ascending or descending order along the row from left to right (not necessarily next to each other). Can you find at least two arrangements of the skyscrapers that comply with these requirements?
BONUS QUESTION: Can you do the same if a 10th skyscraper is added to Tower Row?

BEE LOVE
INFINITY CIRCLES
SHAPE AND COLOR PATHS
EXHIBITION WIRING
This is a classic brain tickler. “The square root of half the number of a swarm of bees has gone to a jasmine shrub and so have eight-ninths of the whole swarm; only two bees remain. Can you tell the number of bees in the whole swarm?”
The progression of circles inside the big circle goes on to infinity. Can you work out the relationships between the full area of the big yellow circle of 1 unit radius and the area of the 7 colored sets of circles shown within?
Can you find two routes starting at the upper left box and ending at the lower right box:
Andros the architect is checking the blueprint of electrical outlets wiring on the floorplan of the Ivan Moscovich exhibition hall. The hall is divided into identical unit blocks, and the design requirement was to have an electrical outlet no more than 3 unit blocks distant from any intersection on the floorplan. One of the plans submitted shows 25 electrical outlets distributed as shown, which satisfies this requirement. Can you find a more economical solution and identify the distribution of the smallest number of electrical outlets required to satisfy the condition in which every intersection has an electrical outlet not farther than a distance of 3 blocks?
SHAPE ROUTE: Following the sequence triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon. COLOR ROUTE: Following the sequence yellow, red, green, blue. You may move from box to an adjacent box, up, down, left, and right.
TO INFINITY WITH CIRCLES One orange circle is half the radius of the larger yellow circle, so therefore (due to the formula for a circle's area) it it has one quarter of the area. START However, there are two ornage circles, so together the orange circles enclose half the area of the yellow circle - including all the colored circles they enclose. The same argument can be repeated for all the other colors. see Ms 7 page 124

Setting Boundaries with Compassion Get to know your personal boundaries in 8 weeks Nick Blaser Strengthen your personal boundaries With instructive, recorded exercises With a blended learning environment to test your personal development
We all know and feel that we have our own personal boundaries. Particularly, we are faced with those boundaries when somebody crosses them or when we push our own limits. In such cases, people often say things like ‘He has crossed the line’ or ‘I can’t take it anymore’. Setting Boundaries with Compassion teaches us how to recognise and protect our boundaries. That is of major importance, as respecting our psychological limits proves to be essential for our sense of happiness and strength as well as our general well-being. Those personal boundaries gradually develop as we get older.
Nick Blaser drew from his own years of expertise to create this clearly structured and practical training, a book that relies on compassion and mindfulness to set healthy boundaries.

More Than Clever The many faces of giftedness in young people and adults Tessa Kieboom & Kathleen Venderickx A new perspective on ways to fully bring out the potential of gifted people A must-read for anyone aiming to better understand giftedness Why we should coach intellectual talents as we would the next Usain Bolt
Most people think that every gifted individual will turn out as a regular Einstein. But that's not true. Just like being talented at sports is no guarantee that you'll win a gold medal, being gifted doesn't automatically lead to exceptional intellectual achievements. Even intellectual talent needs to be coached. Gifted people cope with achievements in different ways. Some gain happiness from them, some cannot commit unless they see the immediate value in an idea, and others cannot cope with the often high expectations. This ground-breaking book reveals many of the obstacles that can cripple the talents of gifted people. It also goes one step further and offers concrete tools to help gifted people to fully bring out their potential and be happier in general.

Young Digital Citizens Children and online media Katja Schipperheijn Teach your children the right habits and attitude before they take their first digital steps Focus on the power of social media A hands-on approach for teachers and parents It comes as no surprise that a significant part of teenage lives takes place online. Children who grow up with online gaming, educational apps and videos take it for granted that they can interact with the outside world in just a few clicks. Many parents, however, are in need of clear rules: what is allowed? At what age can my child start to explore social media? What is safe? What do we have to bear in mind? Young Digital Citizens wants to be a clear guide for parents, supervisors and teachers of young teenagers who are about to take their first steps on social media. All pitfalls and dangers aside, the book also focuses on the positive aspects of digital literacy and online interactions, such as the connection between children, the discovery of new interests and selfdirected learning.

Digitalis How to reinvent the world Thierry Geerts Belgium's Google director Thierry Geerts makes a plea for the so-called knowledge society The digital revolution both enables and forces us to reinvent the world we live in Europe is in urgent need of ambitious and inspiring projects if it wants to catch the digital train All too often the digital revolution is depicted as a global nightmare: companies are shut down, jobs are cut, and the future is looking grim. Others try to take action and are bracing themselves for the giant disruption that is looming around the corner.

In his thought-provoking book, Thierry Geerts proposes to replace the word ‘disruption’ by ‘reinvention’. Take the car, for instance. The way we have been driving around for the past 50 years no longer has a future: we are constantly stuck in traffic, thousands of people die each year as a result of road traffic accidents, and cars are major contributors to air pollution. Electric, self-driving cars offer a safer and more efficient solution. Perhaps we don’t even need a car of our own anymore? This book is a wake-up call. Europe has been at the forefront of the industrial and the computer revolution, so what stops us from becoming the capital of Digitalis? 140 x 210 mm | 232 pages | 58,000 words paperback with flaps | all rights available English and French manuscript available

The World of Transactions Chiel Liezenberg, Douwe Lycklama & Shikko Nijland An innovative book on the importance of mutual trust for digital transactions Discover the opportunities of the transactional Internet Written by three experts who specialise in digital transactions, innovation and digital identity
Transactions are the driving force of our economy. Only if the two parties concerned, i.e. the buyer and seller, have developed a relationship of mutual trust will they proceed with the actual transaction. Unfortunately, the Internet does not provide that much-needed environment of trust. This topic has thus far received little attention. Influential billion-dollar companies such as Apple, Facebook and Amazon facilitate digital transactions and collect data from their users. In exchange for that data, they offer their users more and more services 'for free'. However, the way in which companies use and proces those monstrous amounts of data is increasingly questioned, and cracks have begun to show in the Internet of today. A huge risk, as the number of digital transactions is going through the roof and will see a fivefold increase in five year's time. We can solve this issue by building the transactional Internet together, which requires only two 'big fixes'. On the one hand, we have to break the paradox of trust and restore trust in the Internet as a medium of transaction. On the other hand, the data-benefit balance needs to be redressed, which means that end-users will regain control over 'their data'. When these two conditions are met, it will become much easier to engage in transactions, which will allow the economy to flourish. But that will take time.
170 x 230 mm | 288 pages | 82,000 words full colour illustrations | paperback | all rights available
This book is a call to readers from the business world, the government, politics and the education sector. Now is the time to change the digital market of transactions on a global scale.
Chiel Liezenberg, Douwe Lycklama and Shikko Nijland are the founders of Innopay, an independent consulting firm, specialised in the innovation and optimisation of digital transactions.

Gigantism From too big to fail to slower, smaller and more humane Geert Noels The long awaited new book of economist Geert Noels Our world suffers from a fundamental disease that derails everything: gigantism How do we get our economy back on track? Our world suffers from gigantism. The leading companies and organisations keep getting bigger and more powerful. This Champions’ League effect kills healthy competition, doesn’t lead to sustainable growth and oppresses mankind, with diseases of affluence such as burn out or obesity as a result. A healthy future for our economy will be smaller, slower and happier. No utopian economy, but an economy that takes into account all the dimensions of mankind: the social, the ecological and the economical. An economy that isn’t led by an obsession with growth that burdens the next generation with debts, causes social distortions and heavily harms the environment. Noels advocates in 10 steps to adjust the rules of the game to tame the giants and to give the individual a place in the world economy again.
The 'Winner takes it all' is a hot topic today. However, where most economists are focusing on the impact on margins and profit or productivity, Geert Noels takes a wider look at the impact of large systems on mental well being, communities and our climate problems.

Managers the Day After Tomorrow Connect to many, engage individuals Rik Vera Guide beyond the end of predictability for managers Disproves popular myths and addresses tomorrow’s greatest dangers Offers a multidisciplinary approach In today’s economy, everything has changed. In order to survive, managers and organizational leaders will have to address the need to connect to the largest possible audience without losing touch with the individual. But how does this work? How can managers look ahead? How can they predict how their company will be doing in thirty years from now, and do so in an environment where predictions have become all but impossible, and then at the same time successfully imprint their vision into a strategy for the next three months from now? What makes today’s customers tick? Why does everything have to be easy, fast, fun and simple? Why are data the new gold, and why is AI a blessing? The answer is plain: to keep evolving, leaders should be inspired by the outside world. They should have the guts to read the signals all around them. They should meet the needs of their customers and, above all, they should focus on every possibility. In short, they should never stop experimenting. 170 x 240 mm | 224 pages | 55,000 words integral binding | all rights available English manuscript available

Marketing for the Mad (Wo)Men of Tomorrow Strong brands in a world of algorithms Wim Vermeulen An accessible overview that distinguishes trends from hypes Specific steps towards a winning strategy A hands-on approach with a focus on solutions and opportunities In an ever-changing digital world, marketers might feel like they are constantly chasing an evolution they can’t keep up with. And rightly so. Tesla cars can warn us of accidents before they have happened. Amazon has drone delivery up and running. Consumers are getting ready to embrace virtual reality, augmented reality and chatbots. Where do we go from here? To bridge the gap between the technology-addicted consumer and marketeers that are constantly chasing the facts, the latter can no longer rely on yesterday’s solutions. This book offers an aide in finding new ways out of the slump and in centralizing innovation in every marketing plan. Reviewing success stories and best practices forms an added dimension to this approach: by figuring out which methods worked in the past, why and how they worked, we can set out for even greater results – even in the ever-changing digital age.
