The New Mentality Elke Geraerts • An absolute must-read for everyone who wants to become mentally stronger • Including 26 challenges that will make your brain more powerful and resilient • By the author of Mental Capital, which was sold over 15,000 times all rights available English excerpt available
In her best-selling book Mental Capital, neuro psychologist Elke Geraerts taught us how to arm ourselves against stress, burn-outs and other mental issues. In The New Mentality, she goes a step further: it’s about time that we adapt our society to our brain, not the other way around. By making use of recent scientific research, she shows how we can all actively opt for more mental growth. She debunks the myth of the eternal quest for more balance in our lives, explains how empathy can lead to success and describes what leadership will look like in the 21st century. The result is a powerful plea for taking control of your life with more bravery and for making choices that will make you happier and more successful in the long run.
Elke Geraerts has a PhD in Psychology and has held different academic positions at the universities of Harvard, St-Andrews, Maastricht and Rotterdam. She is a member of the World Economic Forum network (Davos) and works at Better Minds at Work, which helps companies to increase the mental resilience and enthusiasm of their employees. She made an impact with her best-selling title Mental Capital, which teaches readers how to make their brains more resilient.
‘You often find yourself nodding in agreement when reading Elke Geraerts’ book.’ – Belgium’s leading newspaper De Standaard on Mental Capital

Digital Detox Florence Pérès • An eye-opener for digital addicts • Practical and efficient: spend up to 30% less time on e-mail and social media • An inspiring new voice in the debate on stress, hyperconnectivity and digital overload
We are increasingly becoming one with our smartphone. Eagerly checking every news update, reading our e-mails 24/7 and instagramming until we can’t feel our fingers anymore. Our brain never gets a minute of rest.
Florence Pérès worked in the digital world for over twenty years. Meanwhile, she specialized in health sciences and became a mindfulness trainer. She is currently working as a trainer and coach at Better Minds at Work, where she developed the very wellreceived training ‘Digital Detox’.
Digital coach Florence Pérès explains why our digital addiction is fatal for our performance, and how it makes us restless, hasty and stressed. A (digital) burnout may be closer than you’d think. By making use of recent scientific research, she has developed a practical and feasible detox programme, which drastically reduces your digital touchpoints, allowing you to regain control over your digital life. The result? Working creatively and efficiently in a relaxed way.

Highly Sensitive Elke Van Hoof • About one in five people are highly sensitive, but what does this mean? • How to deal with high sensitivity in school or at work? • Based on well-founded scientific research
all rights available
About one in five people are highly sensitive. In Europe, that number corresponds to a group as large as the population of Germany and France combined. Still, highly sensitive people have been treated harshly by scientist for a very long time. Furthermore, the information presented in blogs, newspapers and magazines is not always as accurate.
As a clinical psychologist, Elke Van Hoof is specialized in psychodiagnostics, trauma, stress and burnout. She is affiliated with the Université Libre de Bruxelles and teaches medical psychology and health psychology, and regularly gives lectures as well. As an expert in her field, she’s also frequently called upon by the media.
Highly Sensitive offers a state of affairs of the scientific research that has been conducted so far. It explains what exactly high sensitivity means, how you can recognize it, and how you can deal with the problems some (but certainly not all) highly sensitive people are facing.

A Plea for Normal Edel Maex • A welcome voice against growing extremist trends within Buddhism • A new voice in de debate on the value of Buddhism in Western societies • Edel Maex is one of the foremost authorities on Buddhism
German and French rights sold English edition available
The author denounces that everything needs to be more, stronger, more intense… In religion, it’s no different. ‘Western Buddhism has become a religion for the brave’, Maex says.
Edel Maex is a psychiatrist at the Middelheim hospital in Antwerp. He introduced the mindfulness theory in Belgium. His group lectures and workshops are an enormous success.
Some people seem to think mindfulness is only possible in a Buddhist context. Others say you’re only really committed if you meditate for hours on end. You need to experience grand and intense moments, enlightenment… Anything less than that is meaningless. But in doing so, are we not deviating from the essence of what Buddhism means? How about a little less of everything?

The mindfulness theory has become increasingly influential and successful in recent years. • Childbirth can – even many years later – have an impact on mothers, babies, fathers, relationships and careers • Contains many recognizable stories, practical assignments and concrete advice • The book that allows pregnant women and young mothers to stay in balance Research shows that nearly a quarter of women who gave birth to their first child still look back on the delivery in a negative way three years later. More often than not, they are hesitant to talk about it, because ‘isn’t having a child the most wonderful experience ever’? ‘If I had read Diana’s book before having my baby, I would’ve felt a lot less abnormal.’ – Kelly Deriemaeker, De Standaard Magazine
Diana Koster had many years of experience as an obstetrician. Furthermore, she had a coaching office through which she helped women who have difficulties coming to terms with the way the delivery of their child went. In this book, she gives these women a voice, offers recognition and shows them how they can regain their balance through practical tips and exercises.

Robot at the Steering Wheel Jochanan Eynikel • A unique philosophical view on technological development • Jochanan Eynikel discusses the implications for us individually, for companies and for society as a whole • With concrete practical examples and best practices Big data, smart software, self-driving cars… The development of smart technology is drastically changing our world and even our way of thinking. But our use of technology is not neutral. More than ever, we need to think about how we will be dealing with the moral side of technological progress.
‘There is a big need for accessible books on the implications of technological development on society. This book meets that requirement fantastically, with strong analyses and a pleasant reading style.’ – Dr. Lieve Van Woensel, Head Scientific Foresight Service of the European Parliament
What if a self-driving car has to choose between running into a child or causing a massive traffic accident? What the right thing to do? How should that decision be made? It’s just one of many examples that prove the need for ethical thinking in discussions about technological progress. Robot at the Steering Wheel analyses the connection between technics and ethics, and offers solutions for valuedriven innovation.

Where are the traps? Where does the controlled society end? What is personal and what now belongs to everyone? Is it true that you don’t have to fear anything if you have nothing to hide? Does automation threaten our independence?
‘We are all online from our birth until our death. Logging out is an illusion. It’s about time we start contemplating on that.’ – Katleen Gabriels Katleen Gabriels has a PhD in Philosophy and Moral Sciences. What we can learn from extremists Stijn Sieckelinck • A new vision on radicalization • Based on scientific research as well as numerous conversations with youngsters who have gone through a radical period • Thought-provoking and food for public debate A quick succession of extremist attacks is forcing our society onto the defensive. We need to come up with answers quickly, but are we asking the right questions? Measures are taken to protect citizens, lessons are learnt from past mistakes, but do we have the courage to learn from extremists as well? How come they are so successful in conquering the hearts and minds of so many? Is it their perverse plans? Their shrewd techniques? Or have we, as a society, underestimated their youthful fighting spirit?

As a Doctor in Social Educational Theory, he conducts research and consults in the field of education, governance and professional improvement, but with a particular focus on radicalization, conflict resolution, and political education across an array of national and international contexts.

What You Should Know About Turkey Dries Lesage • A new perspective on Erdogan and Turkish politics by one of the foremost experts in the Low Countries • Taboo-breaking book that paints a much clearer picture than Western media generally do • This book offers the Turkish society in foreign countries a framework for resilience and self-criticism while preserving their dignity Whether it’s about refugees, terrorism or economy: Turkey and Europe need one another. But their relationship is often difficult.
Dries Lesage pleads for a new approach. More empathy and more honesty in news coverage about Turkey can bring us closer to a smoother relationship.
According to this book, president Erdogan, who was directly elected with 52% of the votes, is not the only one at fault. He can be blamed for taking part in the undemocratic games by the Atatürk-oriented opposition, terror organization PKK and the shadowy Gülen movement. But Western politicians and media are just as keen to play along, by supporting the dubious opposition without question. Many Turkish people are concerned by this geopolitical dimension, which – in turn – is grist to Erdogan’s mill.
‘I often sharply criticize Erdogan, but I also point out the equally undemocratic acts by his opponents. And I try to understand why so many Turkish people still support him.’ – Dries Lesage in Belgian magazine Knack Political scientist Dries Lesage is a professor in International Politics at Ghent University. After his daughter married a Turkish immigrant worker, he became interested in this complex country. By looking at the matter without a pro‑Western point of view, he draws different conclusions than many Western media outlets do.

In his new book, Belgian bestselling author Dirk De Wachter sets out to search for the vulnerability of the human soul. No longer confined to discussions in psychiatric contexts, our mental wellbeing is receiving more and more attention in our society. In this society, with all its modern conveniences, we somehow feel detached, lonely and useless. But is it really us who have a problem? Or is it our society as a whole that is in trouble?
Dirk De Wachter is a psychiatrist / psychotherapist and head of System and Family Therapy at the Academic Psychiatric Centre of the KU Leuven, campus Kortenberg. He is an instructor and supervisor in family therapy in several centers in Belgium and abroad.
The World of De Wachter targets the big issues our world is facing: terrorism, climate change, the refugee crisis ... In between, it takes on the digital challenges of today while looking for an answer to one question: how can we find ourselves in this world gone mad?

October Johan de Boose illustrations by Caryl Strzelecki • A story that shows the events of the Russian Revolution in a sharp way • Released on the eve of the 100th birthday of the 1917 February-October Revolution • The illustrations give this historic novel an original and powerful character October 1917, Saint-Petersburg. The city was up in arms. There was famine. People were dying from typhoid. Armed uprisings were a matter of course. Max is a homeless, bespectacled man. He wanders along the roads and watches with boundless admiration the aristocrats that are still in control. While the revolution flares up, he falls in love with Vera, an upper-class girl who sees the revolution as a way out of the strict, boring aristocratic world. They manage to escape the extreme violence, while society around them is changing radically. That change drives a wedge between them. Her revolutionary interests are becoming increasingly perverse. His longing for the lost aristocratic world makes him desperate. Parallel to the civil war, which breaks out in Russia after the revolution, they both become the victim of their own idealism.
Johan de Boose is an author of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and theatre plays. His novel Bloedgetuigen (‘Blood witnesses’) was nominated for the ‘Gouden Boekenuil’ and was awarded the ‘Cutting Edge Award’ and the ‘Halewijn’ prize. For more than 30 years, he has been caught up in Russian culture, literature and history. Caryl Strzelecki is an illustrator and strip cartoonist. In 2013, he published together with Rudi Vranckx the graphic novel De Gierenclub (‘The Vulture Club’), about Vranckx’ experiences as a journalist during the Arab Spring. Maria Sibylla Merian Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium Dr. Marieke van Delft & drs. Hans Mulder et al. • Unique, full-size facsimile of one of the most beautiful books in history • With 60 magnificent full-page illustrations of insects and the original scientific description • Republication with an extensive introduction on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of an exceptional woman’s passing Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium (published in 1705) was the work of a very enterprising and independent woman, Maria Sybilla Merian. In 1699, she travelled to Suriname to do research on the reproduction and development of insects. Nowadays, she is seen as a very gifted artist, but also as an empiric scientist who was one of the first people to firmly dismiss the common idea of the spontaneous regeneration of insects out of soil. Her life and work have been and are still being internationally researched by botanists, entomologists and historians who deal with the history of science, art, religion and economy. Scientific publications on her and her oeuvre are plentiful. Countless exhibits have been dedicated to her work and novels or poems have been written about her. Originally of German descent, she emigrated to the Netherlands but nevertheless graced the 500 German mark bill until the transition to the euro.
The facsimile is preceded by a number of essays which shine a light on Merian’s life, complete oeuvre and the era she lived in. The original texts have been translated into English, and these translations have been added at the end of the book, followed by an index of plant, animal and insect names. This title is edited by two curators of natural history collections: dr. Marieke van Delft (Royal Liberary of Brussels) and drs. Hans Mulder (Artis Library). Arts historian dr. Ella Reitsman has written a biographical introduction in collaboration with drs. Hans Mulder. Dr. Kay Etheridge, professor in Biology at the Gettysburg College (Pennsylvania) discusses Merian’s legacy in the field of biology and dr. Bert van de Roemer (University of Antwerp) elaborates on Merian in her era. British author and Merian expert Redmond O’Hanlon wrote the preface.

The Trial Against Wilhelm II Hans Andriessen, Paul Mevis & Willem Sinninghe Damsté • An interesting and controversial book about the guilt of the German emperor • Well-founded indictment, plea and sentence with a link to rich (online) source material • Counterfactual ‘what if’-historiography is on the rise The Allied Powers never got the chance to call the emperor to account for starting a world war and a series of other charges. Nearly 100 years later the trial is being held in this book. For eight years, a team of young historians and lawyers tackled the question of how the planned trial against Wilhelm II (William II) would have unfolded if the Netherlands had extradited him after WW I. The book does not only offer historic insight into the dynamics of WW I and investigates the criminal culpability of the emperor, but also returns to the origin of international jurisdiction.
Hans Andriessen is the author of De Eerste Wereldoorlog in foto’s (World War I in Photographs), of which 400,000 copies were sold in 13 languages. He is the founder of the Stichting Studiecentrum Eerste Wereldoorlog (Foundation Study Centre World War I). Paul Mevis is a criminal law professor at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Willem Sinninghe Damsté is a lawyer and writer. The contributing judges are Jan Reijntjes, Ruud Rosingh and Marijke van de Vrugt.

A G.I. in the Ardennes Denis Hambucken • An intimate look at an American soldiers’ day-to-day experience during the Battle of the Bulge • Illustrated with high-quality photographs and historical documents, engagingly written and explained in great detail • Includes countless anecdotes and moving stories, gathered from interviews and war correspondence Unlike many other books on WW II, A G.I. in the Ardennes doesn’t focus on the strategic and tactical aspect of the battle, but on the human experience during wartime. What was life like for a regular American soldier who gave his life to combat fascism? By immersing himself in historical documents, hundreds of letters and several interviews from that period of time, Denis Hambucken managed to accurately reconstruct the daily life of an American soldier in impressive detail. The author takes a closer look at the weapons, equipment and personal belongings of the soldiers who fought at the Western front, while sharing numerous personal anecdotes and moving stories.
Denis Hambucken is an advertising professional, illustrator, photographer and author who combines his passions for books, history, and New England to write about woodworking, crafts, and history. He developed a fascination with World War II at a young age, exploring relics of American and German vehicles in his native Belgium. Hambucken now lives in New Hampshire.

Pope Francis
How beautiful would it be His most beautiful quotes Tom Zwaenepoel • With uncomplicated words, the ‘pope of the poor’ touches the hearts of many • Every thought is a valuable key to a happy and meaningful life • Pope Francis’ books have been named bestsellers in many countries In 2016, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was at the head of the Roman-Catholic Church for three years. Never before has a pope been so popular. In his written texts and spoken words, Francis dreams of an authentic type of faith and a world filled with solidarity. Because of this, his quotes often begin with the words, ‘How beautiful would it be...’
Tom Zwaenepoel has a PhD in Germanic languages. He is affiliated with the universities of Ghent and Bayreuth. He specializes in the Vatican and popedom. Lannoo has published his previous works The Small Encyclopaedia of the Vatican, Who Believes Is Never Alone, In All Simplicity and The Voice of Silence.
With his ‘revolution of tenderness’ he longs for a courageous and trustworthy Church. A Church that has the will to return to the essence of faith. He dreams of a fair world that battles war, poverty, hatred and indifference. The foundations of Francis’ dream home are familiar pillars: faith, love and hope. The overarching theme is mercy and charity, notions to which he has dedicated the year 2016.

Open-hearted dialogue about relationships, marriage and family Johan Bonny, Roger Burggraeve & Ilse Van Halst • Antwerp-based bishop Johan Bonny in a dialogue with moral theologist Roger Burggraeve and journalist Ilse Van Halst • A conversation about education, diverse relationship and family models and broken relationships • A candid elaboration on the subject after the special Synod on the Family in Rome and the much-discussed letter of bishop Bonny in 2014 In September 2014, bishop Johan Bonny addressed a remarkable letter to the Vatican, in which he pleaded for a different, more contemporary, attitude of the Catholic Church towards, amongst others, homosexuality, divorce and living together without being married. After the double Synod on the Family and the text The Joy of Love by Pope Francis, Johan Bonny, Roger Burggraeve and Ilse Van Halst continue this thought process from a Christian perspective. Not with the
intention of preaching new ‘doctrines’, but to start a dialogue with all believers about education, relationships, marriage and family models. Johan Bonny is an Antwerp-based bishop. Roger Burggraeve is a moral theologist and co-founder of the Centre for Peace Ethics at the Catholic University of Leuven.
