Only with You The return of romantic love Rika Ponnet The new bestseller by relationship expert Rika Ponnet A remarkable plea for romantic love Rika Ponnet's previous book ‘Stay with Me’ has sold over 40,000 copies ‘So many people are afraid. That, in my opinion, is the most important evolution today: we are paralysed by our fear of failure, also when it comes to love,’ Rika Ponnet writes. When we are in love, we feel on top of the world and yet, we are all terrified. Terrified of getting hurt, of being neglected. So we hope that a rational and scientific approach to love will be the answer.’ Ponnet’s bestseller Stay with Me challenged the way we think about love and relationships. In her ground-breaking new book, she explains why it’s about time that we start to believe in romantic love again, and how we are only able to fall in love if we dare to let go.
Original and new. This book offers valuable insight into the mechanisms of bonding. A story that stays with you for a long time.

Our Brain Steven Laureys ‘Every door that we open leads to a new, unexplored alley. Still, I believe that one day we will fully understand our own brain.’ That hope inspired neurologist Steven Laureys to write a book about our most vital organ. With his unparalleled expertise in disorders of consciousness, such as comas and the Locked-in syndrome, Francqui Prize winner Laureys is perfectly placed to explain the working of our brain and consciousness. And he does that without mincing words. He also warns against writing off coma patients as ‘vegetables’, and makes a heartfelt plea for organ donation, ‘the only scientifically proven type of life after death.’
Professor Steven Laureys is a neurology professor and head of the Giga Consciousness Research Centre and Coma Science Group. In 2017, he won the prestigious Francqui Prize, one of Belgium’s foremost scientific awards.

Pain Bart Morlion Pain rules the life of 1 in 4 people An indispensable book for those who want to understand the mechanisms of pain and how to deal with it Prof. dr. Bart Morlion is chairman of the EFIC European Pain Federation and hosts in September 2019 the European Pain Congress in Valencia
What is pain, and what is its function? How can we combat acute and chronic pain, both with traditional medicine and alternative methods. But also: how do we prevent it?
Bart Morlion
PIJN
Prof. Morlion warns against approaching pain from a solely neurological point of view. In additional to the neurological aspect, traumas, environmental factors, and the patient’s attitude also determine how the patient experiences pain. So what is the place of pain in our performance-based society? How do we deal with pain, as a patient, loved one, caretaker, society, policy maker or employer? In this book, pain doctor Bart Morlion answers all of these questions. He does that backed by years of medical expertise and daily experience with patients, whose lives have sometimes been heavily disrupted by pain. Morlion delves into the subject from a medical, human and societal perspective: from the power of the brain to the art of acceptance.

Finally, I’m Old Mark Nelissen The evolutionary purpose of aging unravelled A surprising plea to give the elderly their rightful place within society Popular science for a broad audience
In Western society, eternal youth is glorified. Aging scares us and the elderly are discarded as relics of a once-useful individual. Some people look to Darwin to justify that attitude, since: ‘the elderly cannot reproduce anymore, right?’ Professor Mark Nelissen disagrees. In Finally, I’m Old he describes the beauty of aging and provides irrefutable proof that the elderly have, in fact, played an important role throughout human kind’s evolutionary history.
Science needs talented interpreters. Great Britain has Richard Dawkins and Robert Wright, the U.S. has Oliver Sacks and Steven Pinker, and Belgium has Mark Nelissen.

Carles Puigdemont The Catalan crisis. An opportunity for Europe. Olivier Mouton What do Catalans have in common with the Corsicans, the Scottish, the Flemish or even the Brexiteers? And can the European Union mean something for them? A daring contribution to the debate about sovereignty in the 21st century The first exceptional testimony by a hunted man, in search of serenity, reflection and nuance For Carles Puigdemont, the independence of Catalonia is not a goal in itself. It's a means to create a new state that belongs to the people. An efficient, decentralised government in the United States of Europe. The 19th-century model of a nationstate is outdated - now is the time to save the 21st-century model of democracy. With this book, Carles Puigdemont aims to inform rather than to convince. As one of its main characters, he analyses the Catalan crisis of the past few years. But he also looks ahead, to the future of Catalonia and the European Union. He enters into a challenging dialogue with political journalist Olivier Mouton.
The Catalan case is a huge challenge for Catalonia, Spain and Europe. Whether or not one agrees with this 21st-century version of sovereignism, this book will strongly contribute to an existential debate that is only just taking off.

More Than Clever The many faces of giftedness in young people and adults Tessa Kieboom & Kathleen Venderickx A new perspective on ways to fully bring out the potential of gifted people A must-read for anyone aiming to better understand giftedness Why we should coach intellectual talents as we would the next Usain Bolt
Most people think that every gifted individual will turn out as a regular Einstein. But that's not true. Just like being talented at sports is no guarantee that you'll win a gold medal, being gifted doesn't automatically lead to exceptional intellectual achievements. Even intellectual talent needs to be coached. Gifted people cope with achievements in different ways. Some gain happiness from them, some cannot commit unless they see the immediate value in an idea, and others cannot cope with the often high expectations. This ground-breaking book reveals many of the obstacles that can cripple the talents of gifted people. It also goes one step further and offers concrete tools to help gifted people to fully bring out their potential and be happier in general.

Research has shown that the early identification of dyscalculia is crucial. It is not just a matter of determining a score, but more importantly of gaining insight into specific individual needs, which allos uw to train pupils in the most efficient way possible.

Setting Boundaries with Compassion Get to know your personal boundaries in 8 weeks Nick Blaser Strengthen your personal boundaries With instructive, recorded exercises With a blended learning environment to test your personal development
We all know and feel that we have our own personal boundaries. Particularly, we are faced with those boundaries when somebody crosses them or when we push our own limits. In such cases, people often say things like ‘He has crossed the line’ or ‘I can’t take it anymore’. Setting Boundaries with Compassion teaches us how to recognise and protect our boundaries. That is of major importance, as respecting our psychological limits proves to be essential for our sense of happiness and strength as well as our general well-being. Those personal boundaries gradually develop as we get older.
Nick Blaser drew from his own years of expertise to create this clearly structured and practical training, a book that relies on compassion and mindfulness to set healthy boundaries.

The Willingness to Look Edel Maex A remarkable plea to look at ourselves, others and the world with a gentle, open mind A must-read in times of alternative facts Edel Maex is one of the most respected voices of modern Buddhism in the Low Countries
‘Before I discovered the art of meditation, I was terrified to face what was going on around me. In a moment of utter despair, however, I had no other choice. To my amazement, I didn’t succumb. On the contrary, my faith and confidence have only grown stronger since then. That doesn’t mean my fear is gone, but that my faith now manages to surpass that anxiety from time to time. And that allows faith to grow, often to your own surprise, little by little.’ There are plenty of things that we prefer not to see, as if we have some kind of natural reflex to turn away from fear, pain and grief. But in doing so, we might miss all that is beautiful, pleasant and moving. In his new book, Edel Maex explains how willingness to look with a gentle, open mind can provide an answer to polarising alternative facts and the general hardening of our society.

It comes as no surprise that a significant part of teenage lives takes place online. Children who grow up with online gaming, educational apps and videos take it for granted that they can interact with the outside world in just a few clicks. Young Digital Citizens wants to be a clear guide for parents, supervisors and teachers of young teenagers who are about to take their first steps on social media. All pitfalls and dangers aside, the book also focuses on the positive aspects of digital literacy and online interactions, such as the connection between children, the discovery of new interests and selfdirected learning.

Managers the Day After Tomorrow Connect to many, engange individuals Rik Vera Guide beyond the end of predictability for managers Disproves popular myths and addresses tomorrow’s greatest dangers Offers a multidisciplinary approach
In today’s economy, everything has changed. In order to survive, managers and organizational leaders will have to address the need to connect to the largest possible audience without losing touch with the individual. But how does this work? How can managers look ahead? How can they predict how their company will be doing in thirty years from now, and do so in an environment where predictions have become all but impossible, and then at the same time successfully imprint their vision into a strategy for the next three months from now? What makes today’s customers tick? Why does everything have to be easy, fast, fun and simple? Why are data the new gold, and why is AI a blessing? The answer is plain: to keep evolving, leaders should be inspired by the outside world. They should have the guts to read the signals all around them. They should meet the needs of their customers and, above all, they should focus on every possibility. In short, they should never stop experimenting. 170 x 240 mm | 224 pages | 55,000 words integral binding | all rights available English edition available

Marketing for the Mad Men of Tomorrow Big brands in a world of algorithms Wim Vermeulen An accessible overview that distinguishes trends from hypes Specific steps towards a winning strategy A hands-on approach with a focus on solutions and opportunities
In an ever-changing digital world, marketeers might feel like they are constantly chasing an evolution they can’t keep up with. And rightly so. Tesla cars can warn us of accidents before they have happened. Amazon has drone delivery up and running. Consumers are getting ready to embrace virtual reality, augmented reality and chatbots. Where do we go from here? To bridge the gap between the technology-addicted consumer and marketeers that are constantly chasing the facts, the latter can no longer rely on yesterday’s solutions. This book offers an aide in finding new ways out of the slump and in centralizing innovation in every marketing plan. Reviewing success stories and best practices forms an added dimension to this approach: by figuring out which methods worked in the past, why and how they worked, we can set out for even greater results – even in the ever-changing digital age.

The World of Transactions Chiel Liezenberg, Douwe Lycklama & Shikko Nijland An innovative book on the importance of mutual trust for digital transactions Discover the opportunities of the transactional Internet Written by three expert consultants who specialise in digital transactions, innovation and digital identity
Transactions are the driving force of our economy. Only if the two parties concerned, i.e. the buyer and seller, have developed a relationship of mutual trust will they proceed with the actual transaction. Unfortunately, the Internet does not provide that much-needed environment of trust. This topic has thus far received little attention. Influential billion-dollar companies such as Apple, Facebook and Amazon facilitate digital transactions and collect data from their users. In exchange for that data, they offer their users more and more services 'for free'. However, the way in which companies use and proces those monstrous amounts of data is increasingly questioned, and cracks have begun to show in the Internet of today. A huge risk, as the number of digital transactions is going through the roof and will see a fivefold increase in five year's time.
c a s n a r r t t s s e e l l l al a
We can solve this issue by building the transactional Internet together, which requires only two 'big fixes'. On the one hand, we have to break the paradox of trust and restore trust in the Internet as a medium of transaction. On the other hand, the data-benefit balance needs to be redressed, which means that end-users will regain control over 'their data'. When these two conditions are met, it will become much easier to engage in transactions, which will allow the economy to flourish. But that will take time.
170 x 230 mm | ca. 300 pages | 82,000 words full colour illustrations | paperback | all rights available
This book is a call to readers from the business world, the government, politics and the education sector. Now is the time to change the digital market of transactions on a global scale.

Late August, 1914. The German army almost reduces the entire city of Leuven to ashes, over a thousand houses are levelled and more than 200 civilians lose their lives. Unlike many other books on WW II, A G.I.'s Daily Life doesn’t focus on the strategic and tactical aspect of the battle, but on the human experience during wartime. What was life like for a regular American soldier who gave his life to combat fascism? By immersing himself in historical documents, hundreds of letters and several interviews from that period of time, Denis Hambucken managed to accurately reconstruct the daily life of an American soldier in impressive detail. The author takes a closer look at the weapons, equipment and personal belongings of the soldiers who fought at the Western front, while sharing numerous personal anecdotes and moving stories.

The Landscape of the Polyphonists The World of the Franco-Flemish School (1400-1600) Paul Van Nevel Why did the polyphonists all come from the same region of southwest Belgium and northern France, and what was the influence of this region on their music? A unique analysis of the environment - the ‘cultural landscape’ - of the 15th and 16th century musician The impressive result of 20 years of research, in collaboration with photographer Luk Van Eekhout Josquin Desprez, Guillaume Dufay and Orlando di Lasso: these are just a few of the world-famous polyphonists or ‘Franco-Flamands’ who have left an indelible mark on the evolution of polyphonic music in Europe. With his celebrated music group the Huelgas Ensemble, Paul Van Nevel has been performing their music around the world for nearly fifty years. In doing so, Van Nevel became increasingly intrigued by the fact that all these composers and singers came from one and the same region – the south of Flanders, Hainaut and northern France. This book attempts to give an answer to the question of what influence the physical and cultural landscapes had on the personal and musical evolution of these polyphonists. It shows how, ultimately, it is the landscape, with its melancholy and rhythm, that has been most infleuntial for the aesthetics of their music.
