Finally, I’m Old Mark Nelissen The evolutionary purpose of aging unravelled A surprising plea to give the elderly their rightful place within society Popular science for a broad audience

In Western society eternal youth is glorified. Aging scares us and the elderly are discarded as relics of a once-useful individual. Some people look to Darwin to justify that attitude, since: ‘the elderly cannot reproduce anymore, right?’ Professor Mark Nelissen disagrees. In Finally, I’m Old he describes the beauty of aging and provides irrefutable proof that the elderly have, in fact, played an important role throughout human kind’s evolutionary history.

Science needs talented interpreters. Great Britain has Richard Dawkins and Robert Wright, the U.S. has Oliver Sacks and Steven Pinker, and Belgium has Mark Nelissen.

He dug through numerous scientific journals in search of proof. He explains what the impact of our diets is on our health and life expectancy in scientifically accurate, but still accessible terms. Big data, smart software, self-driving cars… The development of smart technology is drastically changing our world and even our way of thinking. But our use of technology is not neutral. It’s just one of many examples that prove the need for ethical thinking in discussions about technological progress. Robot at the Steering Wheel analyses the connection between technics and ethics, and offers solutions for value-driven innovation.

There is a big need for accessible books on the implications of technological development on society. This book meets that requirement fantastically, with strong analyses and a pleasant reading style.

What You Should Know About Turkey Dries Lesage A new perspective on Erdogan and Turkish politics by one of the foremost experts in the Low Countries Taboo-breaking book that paints a much clearer picture than Western media generally do This book offers the Turkish society in foreign countries a framework for resilience and self-criticism while preserving their dignity

Whether it’s refugees, terrorism or the economy: Turkey and Europe need one another. However, their relationship is often difficult. According to this book, president Erdogan, who was directly elected with 52% of the votes, is not the only one at fault. He can be blamed for taking part in the undemocratic games by the Atatürk-oriented opposition, terror organization PKK and the shadowy Gülen movement. But Western politicians and media are just as keen to play along, by supporting the dubious opposition without question. Many Turkish people are concerned by this geopolitical dimension, which – in turn – is grist to Erdogan’s mill. Dries Lesage pleads for a new approach. More empathy and more honesty in news coverage about Turkey can bring us closer to a smoother relationship.

I often sharply criticize Erdogan, but I also point out the equally undemocratic acts by his opponents. And I try to understand why so many Turkish people still support him.

After he married the daughter of a Turkish immigrant worker, he became interested in this complex country. Most people think that every gifted individual will turn out as a regular Einstein. But that's not true. Just like being talented at sports is no guarantee that you'll win a gold medal, being gifted doesn't automatically lead to exceptional intellectual achievements. Even intellectual talent needs to be coached. Gifted people cope with achievements in different ways. Some gain happiness from them, some cannot commit unless they see the immediate value in an idea, and others cannot cope with the often high expectations. This ground-breaking book reveals many of the obstacles that can cripple the talents of gifted people. It also goes one step further and offers concrete tools to help gifted people to fully bring out their potential and be happier in general.

Highly Sensitive Elke Van Hoof About one in five people are highly sensitive, but what does this mean? How to deal with high sensitivity in school or at work? Based on well-founded scientific research

About one in five people are highly sensitive. In Europe, that number corresponds to a group as large as the population of Germany and France combined. Still, highly sensitive people have been treated harshly by scientists for a very long time. Furthermore, the information presented in blogs, newspapers and magazines is not always as accurate. Highly Sensitive offers a state of affairs of the scientific research that has been conducted so far. It explains what high sensitivity means exactly, how you can recognize it, and how you can deal with the problems some (but certainly not all) highly sensitive people face.

Research shows that nearly a quarter of women who gave birth to their first child still look back on the delivery in a negative way three years later. More often than not, they are hesitant to talk about it, because ‘isn’t having a child the most wonderful experience ever’? Many women feel like they failed at giving birth and even feel guilty for having anything other than good memories of the day their child was born. However, childbirth can be a traumatising experience, and as the book will show yo, that's the case more often that you'd think. The book contains many accounts by women with similar experiences and practical tasks that will help you process what went through when you gave birth.

Instead of trying to reach distant goals, mindful people should approach life from a position in the present. This will allow them to deal with the problems of life in a peaceful manner. In this reference work on the mindfulness theory, Maex elaborately discusses how to reach a state of inner awareness without passing judgement on others. His techniques focus on a self-criticising attitude and sometimes have surprising results. Mindfulness is the perfect guide for a more peaceful and conscious life experience!

I bow to Edel Maex for writing this lovely book, and for his relentless efforts to bring mindfulness in an authentic and universal articulation, based on his own years of meditation practice and study, into the mainstream of medicine, psychiatry and Western culture.

Self-Help

A Plea for Normal Edel Maex A welcome voice against growing extremist trends within Buddhism A new voice in de debate on the value of Buddhism in Western societies Edel Maex is one of the foremost authorities on Buddhism

The author denounces that everything needs to be more, stronger, more intense… In religion, it’s no different. ‘Western Buddhism has become a religion for the brave’, Maex says. Some people seem to think mindfulness is only possible in a Buddhist context. Others say you’re only really committed if you meditate for hours on end. You need to experience grand and intense moments, enlightenment… Anything less than that is meaningless. But in doing so, are we not deviating from the essence of what Buddhism means? How about a little less of everything?

History

Las Mamás Belgas Young women from the Low Countries fighting in the Spanish Civil War Sven Tuytens A new perspective on the Spanish Civil War through the eyes of young female fighters from the Low Countries Still considered Spanish national heroes today, but unknown in their home country A compelling story of courage and despair

In 1937 a group of young, predominantly Jewish migrant women left Antwerp and Brussels and journeyed to Spain. At first they work alongside a few nurses from the Netherlands in a war hospital near Valencia. However, they later pick up arms themselves to fight the armies of general Franco. During World War II some of these women join the Resistance in Belgium and the Netherlands. Some of them lost their lives in Auschwitz after a lifetime of violent struggles.

Sven Tuytens’ book recounts the story of brave women, in some respects even veritable heroines. They lived in an age of contradictions, of fear of enslavement, but also of hope for a better world. During the Spanish massacre they were bent but not broken and the same can be said for their relentless resistance against the Nazis in their home country during World War II.

Unlike many other books on WW II, A G.I.'s Daily Life doesn’t focus on the strategic and tactical aspect of the battle, but on the human experience during wartime. What was life like for a regular American soldier who gave his life to combat fascism? By immersing himself in historical documents, hundreds of letters and several interviews from that period of time, Denis Hambucken managed to accurately reconstruct the daily life of an American soldier in impressive detail. The author takes a closer look at the weapons, equipment and personal belongings of the soldiers who fought at the Western front, while sharing numerous personal anecdotes and moving stories.

Maria Sibylla Merian Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium Dr. Marieke van Delft & Drs. Hans Mulder et al. Unique, full-size facsimile of one of the most beautiful books in history With 60 magnificent full-page illustrations of insects and their original scientific description Including an extensive introduction and a preface by Redmond O'Hanlon

Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium (published in 1705) was the work of a very enterprising and independent woman, Maria Sybilla Merian. In 1699, she travelled to Suriname to research the reproduction and development of insects. Nowadays, she is seen as a very gifted artist, but also as an empiric scientist who was one of the first people to firmly dismiss the common idea of the spontaneous regeneration of insects out of soil. Her life and work have been and are still being internationally researched by botanists, entomologists and historians who deal with the history of science, art, religion and economy. Scientific publications on her and her oeuvre are plentiful. Countless exhibits have been dedicated to her work and novels and poems have been written about her. Originally of German descent, she emigrated to the Netherlands but nevertheless graced the 500 German mark bill until the transition to the euro. The facsimile is preceded by a number of essays which shine a light on Merian’s life, complete oeuvre and the era she lived in. The original texts have been translated into English, and these translations have been added at the end of the book, followed by an index of plant, animal and insect names.
