The Story of a Brabant Killers’ Survivor David Van de Steen & Annemie Bulté David’s personal and incessant search for the men who murdered his father, mother and sister The film about the young David and his grandfather was a great success in Belgium and the Netherlands More than 7,000 copies sold of the Dutch edition
I want you to know that I love you very much,” I say quietly. “I know, son,” Petje answers. I can tell that he is getting tired and drifting back off to sleep. He is almost gone now. “Can you tell my parents I said hi?” I ask him. Petje remains silent for a moment, then answers in his typically gruff voice, his eyes still closed: “If there’s something, there’s something. And if there’s nothing, then there’s nothing. November 9, 1985. Nine-year-old David sees his parents and little sister murdered by the Brabant Killers in Aalst. He himself is seriously injured. Thirty years after the facts, the orphan is now a father. Following the example of Petje, his deceased grandfather, David tries to finally uncover the truth, something the court failed to do even after all those years. He soon receives help from an unexpected source: he is joined in his search by a film director, a lawyer, and a former gendarmerie colonel. In this book, David does not only share the story of his life from the moment of the attack up to now. He also talks, often for the first time, to other survivors and relatives, policemen and gendarmes, former investigators and gangsters. The Brabant Killers have irrevocably changed their lives as well. Disillusioned with the course of the investigation, David is more determined than ever to fight for the plight of the victims.

Japan Sketches from life Luk Van Haute Interest in Japan and its culture is bigger than ever Japanologist and Murakami translator Luk Van Haute nuances clichĂŠs For anyone who truly wants to get to know Japan Japan is hot. In 2017 Japan received 30 million tourists for the first time. With sushi restaurants popping up on every corner, the popularity of Japanese cuisine is growing at a fast pace. Almost every western country has its own Japanese film festival, and nowadays it's impossible to imagine popular culture without manga and anime, labelled as 'Cool Japan'. However, news coverage on Japan is sporadic and hasty, mainly limited to reports about 'the weird Japanese people'. Luk Van Haute sketches a nuanced portrait of Japan in a personal and narrative style. The stories usually start from a meeting with a familiar or unfamiliar Japanese person, an experience at a certain place, a novel or story (sometimes translated by himself), and so on. This way, he hopes to shine a light on the bigger picture and show Japan's social and cultural diversity. This is the perfect book to gain insight into the true nature of Japanese culture, provided with the necessary historical interpretation and social framework. In doing so, the specific stories make a sample card of Japanese society.

Luk Van Haute lived in Japan from 1986 until 1992, where he studied Japanese literature at the University of Tokyo and was active in the film industry. Since then he has spent a few weeks or months in Japan almost every year. He is the translator of the work of Haruki Murakami and numerous other Japanese authors, and has been awarded for his anthology Liefdesdood in Kamara en andere Japanse verhalen. Van Haute has written numerous articles about Japanese society for various newspapers and magazines.

Only with You The return of romantic love Rika Ponnet The new bestseller by relationship expert Rika Ponnet A remarkable plea for romantic love Rika Ponnet's previous book ‘Stay with Me’ has sold over 40,000 copies ‘So many people are afraid. That, in my opinion, is the most important evolution today: we are paralysed by our fear of failure, also when it comes to love,’ Rika Ponnet writes. ‘When we are in love, we feel on top of the world and yet, we are all terrified. Terrified of getting hurt, of being neglected. So we hope that a rational and scientific approach to love will be the answer.’ Ponnet’s bestseller Stay with Me challenged the way we think about love and relationships. In her ground-breaking new book, she explains why it’s about time that we start to believe in romantic love again, and how we are only able to fall in love if we dare to let go.

From Native American blood brothers to 17th-century experiments where transfusions with blood of calves had to calm down psychotic patients, from the myth of Dracula to blood vengeance in Albania, from primitive sacrificial rituals to blood doping, from stem cell transplantation to immunotherapy: doctor and professor Marc Boogaerts tells the thrilling story of how blood has symbolised the hope for eternal life since the beginning of time.

Artificial Intelligence | Creating an artificial human being Tony Belpaeme Is it possible to turn robots into intelligent beings? The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and robots is no longer restricted to the welding of car parts. Robots can now translate between hundreds of different languages, they beat us at chess and video games, and they can be designed to look nearly indistinguishable from actual people. But do robots understand what is being said? Can they learn and acquire knowledge the way we do? Do they experience emotions and sense pain? Can we transfer all that makes us human onto a machine? This book discusses the current state of affairs in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence and examines what it takes to build the first artificial human being.

Climate-Conscious Consumption | Make a difference Karine Van Doorsselaer Climate change has become a hot topic in recent years. Much attention is paid to the responsibility of governments and companies to develop a proper climate policy, which includes, for instance, banning old diesel vehicles from the cities as well as plastic bags from supermarkets. However, the role played by the individual consumer should not be underestimated. Our role goes beyond using alternative means of transportation to cut exhaust emissions. It also concerns our buying behaviour: what kinds of packaging do we use? Is a vegetarian or vegan diet the answer? What about electronic devices? Karine Van Doorsselaer explains what we can do as individuals to make a difference.

Our Brain Steven Laureys Written by an authority on consciousness and the brain, who has already been tipped as Nobel Prize winner In an accessible way, he explains how our perception, intelligence and consciousness work With special focus on the most common short-circuits in the brain: from Alzheimer’s disease, autism and anxieties to comas, brain tumours, cluster headaches and depression
‘Every door that we open leads to a new, unexplored alley. Still, I believe that one day we will fully understand our own brain.’ That hope inspired neurologist Steven Laureys to write a book about our most vital organ. With his unparalleled expertise in disorders of consciousness, such as comas and the Locked-in syndrome, Francqui Prize winner Laureys is perfectly placed to explain the working of our brain and consciousness. He does so without mincing words. He also warns against writing off coma patients as ‘vegetables’, and makes a heartfelt plea for organ donation, ‘the only scientifically proven type of life after death.’

Pain Bart Morlion International expert Bart Morlion on pain, pain prevention and pain management We all experience pain from time to time; one in five people even suffer from chronic pain A patient’s environment and mind-set have a strong impact on the experience of pain: health care providers, policymakers and employers, and society itself all play a significant role
What is pain? Why does pain exist? How do we control it, both in classical medicine and through alternative methods? And how do we prevent it in the first place? What is the role of pain in a society dominated by heavy workloads, omnipresent social media and hectic lifestyles? To what extent do traumatic experiences, the environment and mind-set have an influence on (the experience of) pain? How can we deal with it as patients, society, policymakers, employers?
Bart Morlion
PIJN
Drawing on his everyday experiences with patients who suffer from chronic pain, pain doctor Bart Morlion aims to offer an answer to these questions. He discusses the topic from a medical as well as a humane and social perspective; from the power of the brain in pain prevention to the art of acceptance.

The Trauma-Sensitive School A different take on behavioural problems in the classroom Anton Horeweg Insight into the changing behaviour of children who have suffered a trauma How to turn your school into a trauma-sensitive school? Includes practical advice for teachers and schools Our schools have to deal with children who have been through a traumatic experience a lot more often than one might think: on average, there is one in every class. An accident, a divorce, the loss of a parent, emotional or physical neglect or abuse: such adverse childhood experiences (ACE) have a profound impact on children and may lead to trauma. With great expertise and empathy, the author discusses the behaviour of children who are subject to abuse and illustrates how easily teachers can misinterpret their behaviour. This practical book focuses on that behaviour and on the ways you can address it as a teacher. Horeweg calls upon every teacher not to look the other way, because you might be the only reliable person in a child’s life. Taking on that role, you can contribute to his or her recovery. The Trauma-Sensitive School offers valuable insights into the causes of trauma and its impact on the development of a child’s brain. It includes numerous examples, practical advice and guidance that can help teachers, educators, care coordinators and school boards to turn the classroom into a trauma-sensitive environment.

Dare to Blossom Why blossoming makes you feel on top of the world Marijke Schotanus-Dijkstra Living a happy and meaningful life is the key to complete satisfaction Based on extensive research Marijke Schotanus-Dijkstra combines that scientific knowledge with her coaching experience
More than 80 percent of Dutch people are happy, but only 37 percent of them actually blossom. The latter group is not only happy, but also claims to live a meaningful life. The result? They feel more comfortable in their own skin, are more productive at work and run a smaller risk of developing mental disorders later in life. In short, you can only benefit from it. The good news is: anyone can learn how to blossom! Drawing on recent research, dr. Marijke Schotanus-Dijkstra raises a number of interesting questions such as: why do we become unhappy when we try too hard to pursue happiness? How can blossoming help us to make the right decisions? And how can you discover your own recipe for a meaningful and rewarding life?
Is happiness the only yardstick of personal well-being? I am convinced that life is not just about trying to be as happy as possible for as long as possible. No, it is mostly about how you can enrich your own life and that of others. Only then can you truly blossom.

The Art of Being Unhappy Dirk De Wachter Author of the bestseller Borderline Times An inspiring take on happiness and purpose Dirk De Wachter's titles have already sold more than 100,000 copies
Our society has become one of the highest highs, of a continuous striving to do better, go further, fly higher. What is worse: we hardly ever think about the fact that those highs do not make up for the lows. We do not realise that there is a difference between what makes us happy for a short period of time and what gives meaning to our lives. But how are we to learn to make that distinction again if we can no longer fall back on the number of likes and comments we receive online? What can we gain from dealing with the ups and downs of life – and with each other – in a more truthful way? And what does it really mean to ‘be happy’? In The Art of Being Unhappy, Dirk De Wachter discusses some of the major questions in today’s society that determine and even change our lives, but, more importantly, bring us closer to the other or to ourselves. It teaches us to sit back in wonder and think about the true meaning of happiness.

Young Digital Citizens Children and online media Katja Schipperheijn Teach your children the right habits and attitude before they take their first digital steps Focus on the power of social media A hands-on approach for teachers and parents It should come as no surprise that teenagers spend a significant part of their lives online. Children who grow up with online gaming, educational apps and videos take it for granted that they can interact with the outside world in just a few clicks. Many parents, however, are in need of clear rules: what is allowed? At what age can my child start to explore social media? What is safe? What do we have to bear in mind? Young Digital Citizens wants to be a clear guide for parents, supervisors and teachers of young teenagers who are about to take their first steps on social media. All pitfalls and dangers aside, the book also focuses on the positive aspects of digital literacy and online interactions, such as the connection between children, the discovery of new interests and selfdirected learning.

Chin Up Living with Migraine Evy Gruyaert Scientific research on the causes and treatment of migraine Discusses the link with food, exercise and lifestyle Take back control of your life with the help of Evy Gruyaert Migraine is more than just a headache. If you, like Evy Gruyaert, frequently experience severe migraine attacks, it can turn your entire life upside down. With the help of neurologist Koen Paemeleire and psychiatrist-psychotherapist Dirk Van den Abbeele, she looks for possible causes, potential triggers and preventive treatments. She also focuses on the link between migraine and food, exercise and lifestyle, and tries to find out if there is a connection with certain conditions such as hyperventilation or certain personality traits. Migraine in part determines your life, but the experiences of Evy and others will help you to accept and deal with it and make conscious decisions to make your life easier.
Migraine cannot be cured, but it can be controlled if you know how to avoid the triggers. I like to compare it to driving. When you speed up, your fuel tank will run empty a lot faster. But you are the one behind the wheel, so you partly decide how you handle your tank.

Gigantism From too big to fail to slower, smaller and more humane Geert Noels The long-awaited new book of economist Geert Noels Our world suffers from a fundamental disease that derails everything: gigantism How do we make our economy healthy again? Our world suffers from gigantism. Leading companies and organisations keep getting bigger and more powerful. This Champions’ League effect kills healthy competition, hampers sustainable growth and oppresses mankind, with diseases of affluence such as burnout or obesity as a result. A healthy future for our economy will be a smaller, slower and humane one. No utopian economy, but an economy that takes into account all the dimensions of mankind: the social, the ecological and the economical. An economy that isn’t led by an obsession with growth that burdens the next generation with debts, causes social distortions and heavily harms the environment. Noels advocates in ten steps to adjust the rules of the game to tame the giants and to give the individual a place in the world economy again.
The 'Winner takes it all' is a hot topic today. However, where most economists are focusing on the impact on margins and profit or productivity, Geert Noels takes a wider look at the impact of large systems on mental wellbeing, communities and our climate problems.

Digitalis How to reinvent the world Thierry Geerts Belgium's Google director Thierry Geerts makes a plea for the so-called knowledge society The digital revolution both enables and forces us to reinvent the world we live in Europe is in urgent need of ambitious and inspiring projects if it wants to catch the digital train All too often the digital revolution is depicted as a global nightmare: companies are shut down, jobs are cut, and the future is looking grim. Others try to take action and are bracing themselves for the giant disruption that is looming around the corner.

In his thought-provoking book, Thierry Geerts proposes to replace the word ‘disruption’ by ‘reinvention’. Take the car, for instance. The way we have been driving around for the past 50 years no longer has a future: we are constantly stuck in traffic, thousands of people die each year as a result of road traffic accidents, and cars are major contributors to air pollution. Electric, self-driving cars offer a safer and more efficient solution. Perhaps we don’t even need a car of our own anymore? This book is a wake-up call. Europe has been at the forefront of the industrial and the computer revolution, so what stops us from becoming the capital of Digitalis? 140 x 210 mm | 232 pages | 58,000 words paperback with flaps | Simplified Chinese rights sold English and French manuscript available

History
My Triumph of the Will Journal of 40 months in Sachsenhausen Flor Peeters, edited by Lukas De Vos A journal of forty months’ political imprisonment in the Sachsenhausen-Oranienburg concentration camp An exceptional account that transcends raw emotion and indignation A haunting book you simply can’t put down In 1941, journalist and professor Flor Peeters was deported to Sachsenhausen-Oranienburg, a concentration camp for political prisoners. He was forced to throw away all of his notebooks, but the memories stayed. Overcome with emotion but not broken, the author describes the hardships of camp life, the tortures, the arbitrary executions. How to stay humane when you come face to face with a ‘good’ SS officer, Himmler ‘the bloodhound’ or unscrupulous kapos? How to deal with adversaries that become allies in a camp where the majority of prisoners are communists? Do not fixate on uniforms or groupings: it is man himself who is to decide how he will act in precarious circumstances and in a community he didn’t choose for. How then to live between propaganda and betrayal, canings and starvation?

The Story of the Bloch Family A Jewish family on the run during WWII Tina De Gendt & Karel Van Keymeulen The true story of a Jewish family during the Second World War The baker’s family Bloch is known far beyond the borders of their hometown Ghent, but their turbulent life story had never been told until now A tragic story about missed opportunities, betrayal and the search for justice In the early morning of May 15th, 1940 district police officer De Caster enters the small bakery on the corner of the Veldstraat in Ghent. ‘It’s time. The German troops have broken through the front line.’ The family Bloch splits up: father and mother flee their home with their children Jacques and Nicole, while grandmother Sophie and aunt Margot decide to stay in Ghent. That is the start of the turbulent war story of the well-known baker’s family Bloch. Journalists Tina De Gendt and Karel Van Keymeulen were granted exclusive access to the family archive and have reconstructed the compelling and moving story of a family torn apart by war.
People know that millions of people were killed. But no one ever seems to consider the possibility that it might have happened to their neighbour.

Art and science are closely intertwined. They both have a fundamental influence on our society and allow us to look at the world from a different perspective. This book consists of ten essays that are based on conversations between a biologist-philosopher and an artist. Together, they explore the idea that art is knowledge. In the curious setting of Vanmechelen’s art project LABIOMISTA, which is a combination of a zoo, studio, kitchen and laboratory, they talk about curiosity and generosity, art and science, culture and society, about the advantages and disadvantages of interbreeding as well as the never-ending tension between the global and the local.

The field of music history has recently gone through a significant evolution. It is high time that the surprising new insights of experts reach a wider audience. This book offers an update on the knowledge of European music from a cultural-historical perspective. The main understanding is that music has always moved on the cutting edge between philosophy and musical practice and owes its cultural meaning to that interaction. Francis Maes guides the reader through the multifaceted music history of the European continent and points out the unmistakable beauty of well-known and lesser known compositions along the way. He starts out in ancient Greece and ends in the 1900s as new evolutions direct music into a radically different direction. The Battle for the Ice Fascination and exploitation Sara Keijzer & Diederick Wildeman 400 years of exploration and exploitation of the North Pole An accessible book about an area that remained undiscovered and barely accessible for many centuries, but is today a political arena of the world's superpowers Extensive historical research and a contemporary look at the theme by artists, writers and researchers Willem Barentsz was sure of it: there had to be a shipping route to China via the North Pole. After three failed attempts and being grounded on Nova Zembla for months, he gave up. Who would have known that 400 years later, Barentsz would turn out to be right after all? Sea levels are rising, polar ice is melting. The most diverse fauna and flora, described with great amazement in the 19th-century shipping journals, are now more vulnerable than ever. The pioneers of our history discovered the Pole and uncovered its secrets. What else does the ice have in store for us? And how will it shape tomorrow's political reality?
