Peaks of Europe Johan Lolos 145 days. 17 countries. 1 road trip. 40,000 km travelled. Many people met.

Peaks of Europe is not a traditional landscape photography book. Itʼs the result of a 5-month adventure across 17 countries told through the lens of a European travel photographer who took 29 years to finally explore the continent on which in he was born. The book has been designed for a specific purpose: telling the story of a 5-month road trip and what it takes to be living out of a car for several months, with all the good and bad moments. For this project, Johan Lolos wasn’t just documenting the landscapes. This book features a series of photos with a focus on the storytelling as much as the imagery. At the end, the people he met were what he remembered most. More than 250 pages featuring 200+ photos, many of which are previously unpublished, take you through three major regions of Europe: the North, the Balkans and the Alps. From the Arctic island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago, to Greece’s largest island where Lolos walked in the footsteps of his ancestors in Crete, Peaks of Europe showcases the large variety of landscapes that makes Europe so diverse and unique. As a travel photographer with a fascination for human interactions, Lolos has also tried to portray different cultures through all the people he met during his journey.

Johan Lolos is a Belgian-born self-taught travel photographer with a passion for the outdoors and the wilderness. His images of New Zealand have been published in Mashable, National Geographic Travel, Outside Magazine, and Huffington Post. With more than 450,000 followers on Instagram, Johan Lolos was a pioneer of the travel photography influencer industry, as he started using the app in 2013. Today, Johan’s audience is spread around the world with the top 5 countries following him being the US, Germany, France, the UK and Belgium (source: iconosquare). Johan can be found on lebackpacker; on @leBackpacker; and on Lebackpacker. His website is www.johanlolos.com.

Architecture

Carchitecture Thijs Demeulemeester, Thomas De Bruyne & Bert Voet Lifestyle journalist Thijs Demeulemeester takes you on a trip through some iconic houses and the unique cars that match them in elegance of design and construction

‘Life is too short to drive boring cars.’ – Hanan Sobati, founder of Arabian Gazelles, the first female supercar club in the world.

‘I only purchase and drive cars that represent thoughtful design, elegance and performance.’ – Frank Lloyd Wright.

This book about beautifully designed cars and international architecture has been curated with an eye for pure aesthetics. Although architecture and cars are theoretically miles apart, the sources of inspiration for their designers are often strikingly similar. Recalling a time when you could recognise an architect from his Saab or his Citroën DS, lifestyle journalist Thijs Demeulemeester shows that architects and luxury car makers are alike in their appreciation of elegance of design, attention to materials, and solid construction. This book takes you on a trip through some iconic houses and the unique cars that match them.

Thijs Demeulemeester is a Belgian lifestyle journalist, specialising in interior design, contemporary art and architecture. He has previously published a number of well-received titles at Lannoo. Bert Voet has been working as a freelance journalist since 2004 for De Tijd, Trends and Knack, among others. He visits a car collector every week for the magazine Sabato. Thomas Debruyne is best-known for his instagram feed ‘Cafeine’. Thomas is a photographer, specialising in architecture, and a graphic designer.

Architecture

Edgy Architecture Pierre & Agata Toromanoff Architecture built in impossible locations, drawing from work by the best architects in the world A beautiful gift and coffee table book for architecture lovers

‘We wanted this house to embrace its landscape, we designed a house that would not engage with its landscape and become landscape.’ – Julien De Smedt in dezeen.com.

‘Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.’ – Frank Lloyd Wright.

‘I do not think that architecture is only about shelter, is only a very simple enclosure. It should be, to you, to make you think.’ – Zaha Hadid.

This beautifully photographed book of striking buildings in impossibly difficult locations features a carefully curated selection of international projects. In more than 60 case studies, the authors profile houses built on cliffs, steep mountain slopes, and other treacherous places, like X house in Barcelona, Lookout in Norway, and the Capital Hill Residence of Zaha Hadid in Russia. The photographs were taken expressly for this book, and feature interior images and plans.

Agata Toromanoff is an art and design historian. She has worked for collectors and galleries and has curated and managed various projects in the field of contemporary art and design. She has published several successful international titles, including Sofas and Chairs by Architects with Thames and Hudson. Pierre Toromanoff entered the book industry more than 20 years ago. He specialises in visual art and pop culture. He and his wife Agata have made illustrated books together since 2014.

Architecture

Beautified China Kris Provoost A photo essay by Belgian architect and photographer Kris Provoost capturing the boldest and most iconic structures of the architectural revolution in China Striking images of fantastical buildings from unexpected angles and perspectives

‘“Beautified China” shows the country’s modern architecture in new light.’ – CNN Style Photo-Series

‘Provides an abstracted look at China’s iconic architecture.’ – ArchDaily.com.

This book of stunning photographs by architect and photographer Kris Provoost captures the wave of the architectural revolution in China. Internationally renowned architects such as Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Ole Scheeren, Herzog & de Meuron, Daniel Liebeskind and many others have been engaged in creative, futuristic, and flamboyant projects in China in recent years. The sky is literally the limit, both in terms of construction, use of materials and design. Unimaginable forms, which defy all rules of gravity, come to life in immense skyscrapers. Beautified China offers an overview of these revolutionary designs, capturing their surreal impact in photographs that explore the free play of form that characterises each building. The book features essays by Rem Koolhaas, Ma Yansong & Ole Scheeren, among others, and each photograph is accompanied by information pertinent to the project, including function, environment, and context.

Kris Provoost is a Belgian architect and photographer. After receiving his Master’s in Architecture, he moved to China, where he further expanded his career. He worked for, among others, Zaha Hadid Architects & Buro Ole Scheeren. He also focuses on architectural photography. His work has previously appeared in CNN Style, Dezeen, ArchDaily, Designboom, gooood, That’s Mag Beijing, Time Out Shanghai, Abduzeedo, Fubiz, and T-Magazine.

‘Everybody who knows her will agree that Barbara always knows where to go and what to eat. If you let her be your guide too, she will not steer you wrong, even when looking for hidden gems and places off the beaten track.’ Life is too short to drink bad coffee or bad wine. Big Ben? Been there. The Eiffel Tower? Seen it. More and more people want to just enjoy their city trip, rather than visiting every ‘touristy’ place of interest. The traveller’s bucket list nowadays consists of culinary experiences. So, first things first: let’s get some good food. Guided by Food acknowledges this new trend and offers readers a handful of carefully chosen tips, rather than a long list of useless information, offering simply the best, most fun, and most funky places on the latest foodie scene. The book offers a unique combination of culinary hotspots and travel tips to cities such as San Francisco, Beirut, Tel Aviv, Copenhagen, Los Angeles, Ibiza, Cartagena, Tokyo, Lisbon, and Cape Town. Hundreds of locations and mouth-watering tips are included: restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and hotels. Preselected for you: all you need to do is book your plane ticket. Guided by Food is more than a book. Anyone who buys the book will also receive a limited Google Maps profile, where you can find and share new culinary tips. www.lespetitespestes.com –

The Standing Rock Portraits Gift edition Murray Lemley Amazing portrait photography of the Fort Yates Native Americans, and an astonishing historical document First publication of the works of Frank Bennett Fiske

The Standing Rock Sioux of Fort Yates in the west of North Dakota have been frequently in the news recently because of the demonstrations against the oil pipeline that crosses their land. Over 100 years ago Frank Bennett Fiske (1883-1952) photographed members of the Standing Rock people in his studio in his birth place Fort Yates. The men and women he portrayed were his friends and neighbours: Native Americans living in the reservation. With a big studio camera he made photos that have a tremendous depth on glass negatives that have seldom been shown to the public. Now for the first time these photos are published in a book. Photographer and graphic designer Murray Lemley, also from North Dakota, made a selection of the images for this world premiere of Fiske’s work.

‘These pictures show a historical and artistic vision of proud people in a difficult transitional period. The glass negatives of Frank Fiske are a sumptuous source of information and understanding.’ – Rod Slemmons, American photography expert

‘America is still out there - You just have to look for it.’ – Larry Niehues

‘I’m proud to say I’m from the USA because I’ve really seen it with my own eyes - all the beauty and the destruction, the tradition and the innovation, the loud cities and the quiet little spaces.’ – Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys)

Larry Niehues, a French-born photographer who lives in the United States, travelled around the country for 5 years photographing modern day America while seeking out the continuing presence of a timeless post-war ‘old America’. ‘I thought then that Oscar was one of the best. And now, almost 40 years later, I still do!’ – Graydon Carter, Editor-In-Chief, Vanity Fair

Very few celebrities are so iconic that their first name is all that’s needed in order to immediately recognise them. One photographer has captured each and every one of these icons – and more besides – on film. He goes by the name of Oscar Abolafia. You can call him Oscar.

Oscar Abolafia (born in 1935) is an American photographer known for his outstanding photojournalism of the celebrities that made the 1960s and 70s truly extraordinary. A lot of cities bear the scars of human suffering. Nature gave them an uppercut or humans inflicted it upon themselves. Wars, riots, bombs, racism all lead toward a city torn apart. But people show resilience. They take their lives back and often use music as a healing power. This book tells the story of Hiroshima (atom bomb 1945), Belfast (The Troubles 1969-1998), Detroit (racism and bankruptcy of the city 2013), New Orleans (hurricane Katrina 2005), Port Au Prince (earthquake 2010) and Kigali (genocide 1994) and how music inspires people to rebuild a city and restore hope.

Landscape Photography Saskia Boelsums Powerfully atmospheric landscape photographs inspired by the heritage of Dutch Old Master paintings

The dramatic landscape photographs of Saskia Boelsums manifest a strong connection to the Dutch tradition of landscape paintings. She is inspired by nature, weather, and the seasons, with clouds and skies characterised by moody chiaroscuro and painterly monumentality. The reality of the changing climate, and what this will mean for the future, is a theme that runs throughout her work. She captures not only the beauty of the landscape, but also a vague sense of uncertainty and threat. As she says:

‘It looks like the classic historical Dutch landscapes and skies are being pushed out by landscapes and skies that are the result of climate change. I am very aware of that tension.’ ‘I am photographing when most people think the weather is too bad to go outside. By exploring different landscapes in all four seasons, I feel strongly connected to the universe. That feeling I’m trying to pass on through my landscape photos.’ – Saskia Boelsums

Visual artist Saskia Boelsums was born in The Netherlands and grew up in Iran and Curaçao. She studied at the art academy in Groningen and graduated with a degree in spatial and graphic design. Since 2013 she has focused entirely on photography. She has won numerous awards, most recently the Felix Schoeller Photo Award in 2017 in the landscape category. Saskia’s work has been shown in Amsterdam, London, Berlin, Moscow, Hong Kong, and New York.

Moving Through Contrast Suzanne Jongmans The first monograph by this award-winning Dutch photographer Jongmans uses recycled materials to create Renaissance costumes, which she then photographs on models Strong references to the paintings of Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Holbein

‘Most people throw away foam, but like a child I see the diamond in a stone.’ – Suzanne Jongmans

‘Flemish art back to the future.’ – Washington Post

‘Modern Vermeer.’ – Elsevier

The traditions of sculpture and costume design meet contemporary sustainability in the serene, old-master inspired photographs of interdisciplinary artist Suzanne Jongmans. For each image she designs a costume, then converts the three-dimensional images to the flat surface. She uses simple packaging materials such as bubble wrap and foam rubber to make elaborate renaissance costumes, offering a de facto commentary on the world of mass consumption. Her portraits are both beautiful and thought-provoking.

Suzanne Jongmans (1978) studied textile design and photography at the Academy for Visual Arts in Tilburg. In addition to a large commission for the Italian fashion house Moncler, commissioned by Valentino, a documentary about her appeared on Die Deutsche Welle, she got attention on CNN, a solo exhibition at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and an exhibition in the Welt museum in Vienna.

ROA Codex ROA, Lucy Lippard, Johan Braeckman, e.a. The complete ‘codex’ of one of the greatest street art artists in the world Includes texts by art critic Lucy Lippard and philosopher Johan Braeckman Works are found on walls around the world, and in travelling exhibitions

‘Although the street art is generally conveyed in a very natural matter, even his dead animal paintings seem at peace.’ – Streetartbio.com

‘Detached from the artist’s identity, his detailed, illustrative animal paintings have brought him back to the world. With local species of animals as his main focus, ROA inevitably starts a dialogue about human interaction with nature and the environment, whether it is painting on the walls of a museum or in an abandoned rural factory.’ – Hi Fructose – The New Contemporary Magazine

‘One of the most influential acts of street art around the world.’ – The Huffington Post

Fascinated by nature, the anonymous muralist and street artist ROA is inspired by the beauty of its non-human inhabitants. With great attention to detail, ROA draws over-sized black and white creatures of endemic or endangered species on buildings around the world, from Moscow to Mexico City, and from Los Angeles to London. His subjects are frequently survivors; scavengers, rodents, and unusual animals that thrive in their particular milieu. ROA is the pseudonym of an anonymous, contemporary street art artist from Ghent. His works have been applied to buildings in various cities in Europe, the United States, South America, Africa, Asia and Australia. He regularly participates in street art festivals and from time to time collaborates with galleries worldwide. ROA can also be viewed on ‘Magic City: The Art of The Streetʼ, an itinerant exhibition with forty renowned street art artists, including Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Blek le Rat, Faith47 and Ron English. With essays from art critic Lucy Lippard and Johan Braeckman, a professor of philosophy at the University of Ghent.
