The Strange Life in the Ocean 140 x 210 mm | ca. 352 pages ca. 75,000 words paperback | B&W illustrations all rights available

A journey from mythical sea monsters to real ocean biodiversity: from whales and coral reefs to life-shaping microbes

Discover how new technologies and research are revealing the deep sea and redefining our role within the ecosystem

The Strange Life in the Ocean From deep-sea monsters to microbes

The ocean harbours unknown treasures: a world of sea monsters that are not frightening, but essential to our survival. From microbes that influence the climate to deep-sea organisms that contribute to the development of medicines and food, marine biodiversity provides humanity with invaluable services, yet it remains largely hidden and under threat.

This book takes you on a journey from mythical sea dragons to the real wonders of the deep ocean. Science reveals what once seemed incomprehensible and shows how humanity, as the decisive factor, faces a choice: destruction or protection.

It is time to see the ocean for what it truly is: the source of life.

Save Yourself First (and Only Then the Planet)

How to be healthy on this polluted globe

The accusations about how we are destroying the climate come at us from all sides. We use too much plastic, travel by plane too often, eat too much meat… Even vegetarians can’t escape it, because soy, too, has a heavy ecological footprint.

It can be hard to see the wood for the trees. But instead of feeling guilty about everything you’re doing wrong, you’re better off focusing on what you can do right for your own health and wellbeing, argues author and pioneering climate thinker Louis De Jaeger. The two are closely connected: by taking good care of yourself, with healthy food, a clean living environment, and fewer polluted products, you also or indirectly contribute to a healthier planet.

Step by step, you’ll discover how focusing on your own well-being and that of your loved ones also benefits the planet and the climate.

He is the founder of Commensalist, a company that creates more sustainable outdoor spaces for private individuals, businesses, and public authorities. Waiting is not a passive act, but an active (even engaged) choice

A concrete response to the diagnosis of our society

A unique plea for a new form of commitment

Waiting: A Way of Life

In his latest book, Dirk De Wachter highlights the importance of waiting in a world that seems to spin ever faster. It feels as if there’s no escape from the speed of daily life, from our constant drive to achieve and perform. Yet there is an alternative: we simply need to allow ourselves to wait.

Moving away from easy solutions, this book tells a hopeful story about affection and connection. It shows how small choices can have big consequences. Waiting is not a passive stance but a conscious, even engaged, choice.

Waiting: A Way of Life is a unique plea for a new form of engagement and a concrete response to cynicism, passivism and despair.

Dirk De Wachter is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, serving as head of the Systemic and Family Therapy department at the University Psychiatric Center of KU Leuven, Kortenberg campus. He is also a trainer and supervisor in family therapy at various centers both in Belgium and abroad.

So much depends on our manner of waiting. Waiting for the sake of waiting, idly waiting for nothing, is nothing short of pointless. An open-minded, hopeful, trusting and connecting kind of waiting, however, can make all the difference.

Understand how stress works and gain more control over your life

This book separates fact from fiction and provides the tools you need to deal constructively with stress and burnout

Another book by bestselling author Luc Swinnen

Dr.

I'm Stressed Out, Doc!

If you understand how stress and burnout works, you can do something about it

Stress is everywhere. Every year, countless books are published, and you can’t open a newspaper without stumbling upon yet another new method to tackle stress. Yet the core is simple, says stress doctor Luc Swinnen, who has studied the subject for more than 30 years: stress is your body’s reaction to danger. A highly effective reaction, in fact, only nowadays we are constantly bombarded with countless stress triggers. The result? We’re under continuous stress. Our body shifts into overdrive until, eventually, the light goes out: burnout.

Luc Swinnen is clear: if you understand how stress works, you can actually do something about it. His solution for chronic stress and burnout is threefold: reduce the number of stress triggers; give your brain sufficient rest (and no, that doesn’t mean simply sleeping more) and seek deep, meaningful connections with others.

A widespread form of manipulation that is finally getting the attention it deserves

Combines in-depth expertise with practical advice and strategies

Also draws attention to this behaviour beyond romantic relationships

Gaslighting Unmasked

Recognize emotional manipulation, break the cycle, and reclaim your confidence

Gaslighting is a subtle yet devastating form of emotional manipulation that undermines victims by twisting the truth and sowing doubt. Sometimes it’s obvious, but often it hides in phrases like “You’re too sensitive” or “I never said that”. These small comments gradually erode self-confidence, leading to self-doubt, emotional exhaustion, broken relationships, and even physical symptoms like insomnia and stress.

In this groundbreaking book, narcissism expert Alice Vlottes explores the mechanisms of gaslighting from both the manipulator’s and the victim’s perspective. She reveals how gaslighting shows up not only in romantic relationships but also in the workplace, within families, friendships, and even in the way we talk to ourselves. Packed with case studies, scientific insights, and concrete strategies, this book teaches you how to recognize gaslighting, protect yourself, and rebuild your confidence.

An essential guide for anyone ready to break free from manipulation and reclaim their life.

Two scientists demonstrate just how powerful exercise really is for conditions such as type II diabetes, obesity, as well as cancer and dementia

Based on research, expert interviews, and their own scientific experience, filled with examples and entertainingstories

The Drive to Move

The remarkable science behind an active lifestyle

The human body is an athletic machine, built to move a lot. Huntergatherers did this for millions of years, but over the past century, we’ve become largely sedentary. This lack of physical activity is taking its toll, triggering a wave of chronic diseases.

Science has already shown this for cardiovascular diseases and type-2 diabetes. New studies reveal that the benefits of movement extend far beyond what we once thought - it is a powerful ally in the fight against chronic illnesses, as well as dementia and cancer. That is why health has become a major motivation to move.

Through inspiring stories and recent scientific insights, this book challenges you to examine your own lifestyle. You’ll learn how much movement is truly necessary, and where the limits lie - because too much isn’t healthy either. A book that motivates, provides nuance, and gets you moving.

The emotional and practical challenges of caring for aging parents

More and more people, sooner or later, are faced with the responsibility of caring for their aging parents, a kind of “reverse parenting,” so to speak. For some, this is a gradual process; for others, it comes unexpectedly and without preparation. Balancing work, family, and caregiving while navigating practical organisation can have a profound emotional and practical impact on the adult “child.” Feelings of sadness, anger, and guilt often make this balance even heavier.

Suddenly You Have to Care for Your Parents is an essential guide for anyone confronted with the care of dependent elderly relatives. Using relatable stories, psychological insights, and practical advice, geriatric psychologist Luc Van de Ven helps readers support both themselves and the parents in need.

A fresh and positive perspective on aging

Focus not on living as long as possible, but on aging as well as possible

A counterpoint to the traditional narrative of aging as a burden or cost

The Best Is Yet to Come Learn to age well

When it comes to aging, we tend to focus more on the quantity of life than on its quality. But what if much of the hardship of growing older could be avoided simply by looking at aging differently and by dealing with it in a new way?

This book does not offer advice on how to live as long as possible. Instead, it provides guidance for anyone struggling with the deeper questions of growing older. It explores three central themes: how to free yourself from prejudices about aging, how to cope with a changing body and mind and how we as a society approach caregiving or how to remain engaged and continue to contribute to one another's lives. Along the way, it draws not only on scientific research, but above all on the author’s experience as a psychiatrist for the elderly.

Through the author’s personal reflections, illuminating stories, and the latest scientific insights into the aging brain and body, this book offers a deeply personal and original perspective on how we can prepare for old age, even at a younger stage of life.

Just One?

The book for all parents of an only child

More and more families today have only one child. Sometimes it’s a conscious choice, other times families aren't blessed with a second child despite all efforts. Yet persistent clichés still surround only-child families: an only child is often assumed to be spoiled, lonely, or overly independent. How do parents navigate these prejudices, practical questions, and emotional challenges? And how do you make choices when you don’t really have one?

This heartfelt yet nuanced book breaks those myths. Evi Van Mierlo says goodbye to clichés and outside expectations, blending relatable personal stories with a socially relevant analysis of the position of only-child families. From conversations with others and dealing with worries, to discovering the strength and beauty in raising an only child, this book offers recognition, comfort, and perspective to parents who sometimes feel alone in their situation, while they're certainly not.

Why Brainstorms Don’t Work

On creativity in the workplace

In a world driven by artificial intelligence, stimulating and nurturing creative thinking is no longer a luxury but a necessity for every business and organisation. Yet brainstorming sessions rarely deliver real results. The real work begins with giving feedback and keeping ideas alive. But why does that matter so much? How do you truly put creativity to work? And how do you build a creative culture that goes beyond Friday drinks and a ping-pong table in the office?

With sharp observations, playful anecdotes, and practical advice, this book shows you how to give effective feedback, keep ideas alive, and turn creativity into growth. A provocative plea to embrace creativity not as a buzzword, but as a strategy for survival.

All That Glitters Is Not Gold

How to pay a fair price for shares in the world’s best companies

How can you tell whether you are paying a fair price for a stock? The current share price only tells you part of the story. Tomorrow’s hype can blind you to overvaluation. And stock market success stories? They sometimes shine only briefly. Because not everything that glitters is gold.

Market expert and experienced quality investor Luc Kroeze shows in his third book that investing is not a game of chance, but a craft. To determine whether a stock price is fair, you need to understand how to assess the value of the underlying business.

In All That Glitters Is Not Gold, three friends guide you through the world of fundamental analysis. Through their conversations, you learn how to use the DCF model to calculate a company’s intrinsic value, based on free cash flows, risk, and return.

Not dry theory, but an accessible and in-depth explanation packed with examples, insights, and practical tools, including downloadable spreadsheets.

Luc Kroeze has been active on the stock market since 2008. In 2014 he quit his job and became a full-time investor. He regularly writes for financial magazines and investment websites.

EU expert Rolf Falter takes a critical stocktake after 75 years of European integration

What is Europe's place in a rapidly evolving world order?

A compelling look at Europe's past to explain the geopolitical challenges today

The Union That Never Was

Why Europe stands still while the world races ahead

Europe is under pressure. Global geopolitical relationships are shifting, new powers are emerging, and the old continent seems at a loss. France and Germany are at odds, the British remain aloof and on the brink of bankruptcy, while Belgium and the Netherlands are unsure of their role. Borders are closing, protectionism is on the rise. In the east, an assertive Russia pushes against Europe’s borders; in the west, subversive forces are being supported. Some are even calling for a European army.

The year is 1950, but it could just as easily be 2026. Seventy-five years after the founding of the European Coal and Steel Community, Europe is once again, or perhaps still, struggling with the same demons, even as new ones have emerged. The way the EU functions today, and the areas in which it falls short, are the direct result of its history. At times visionary, just as often chaotic and defiant, much like the politicians and bureaucrats who shaped it.

Europe is therefore both a brilliant experiment and a brutal power struggle between nations and egos. That was true then, it is true today, and it will remain so in the future. In The Union That Never Was, EU expert and best selling author Rolf Falter delivers a vivid historical narrative, and a guide for anyone seeking to better understand the world of today and tomorrow.

Over the past decades, Rolf Falter has worked as a researcher, journalist, lecturer, adviser to senior Belgian politicians, and as a European civil servant.

Exceptionally well-written and stylistically strong

What Language Reveals

A brief history from brain to civilization

Language is more than just sounds and letters - it reveals who we are and where we come from. It tells us much more about ourselves than we realize, constantly evolving while also shaping the society we live in.

This book explores the history of language and its deep connection to human development. How do language and culture reflect each other? What signals do we send about ourselves through the way we speak? Does language shape our thoughts? And how does the way we use language reveal our gender, age, biases, and beliefs?

Watch the author introduce his book:

Freek Van de Velde is a research professor at the Faculty of Arts at KU Leuven, where he teaches historical linguistics and language variation. In his research on the history of language, he combines classical philological methods with insights and techniques from various fields, including biostatistics, cultural evolution, and machine learning. He is a sought-after speaker and a frequent guest expert in the media.

Nippon

Japan through the eyes of Philipp Franz von Siebold, 1832-1852

Japan was isolated almost completely from the West for more than two hundred years, from 1641 to 1854. One of the first Westerners to penetrate that barrier and reveal fundamental information about the country – and the Far East in general – was Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866), a doctor from Würzburg in Germany. From 1823 to 1829 he lived on the small island of Dejima, a Dutch trading post in Nagasaki that was then the only point of contact between Japan and the West.

Full of ambition, Siebold was sent from the Dutch East Indies to Japan with the task of gathering as much information as possible about the country, its geography, its people, religion, customs and traditional costumes. Working with Japanese artists including Kawahara Keiga and Hokusai, Siebold embarked on an unprecedented visual and scientific project, culminating in the book Nippon.

This centuries-old masterpiece offers a unique glimpse of a country that continues to intrigue people today

The fine illustrations by Japanese artists give a wealth of information about ancient rituals, scenery, the art of war, court culture and much more

In this publication of Nippon, we give Siebold’s work a new lease of life that lets us understand the Japan he saw. This edition includes all the original prints, while newly written essays and commentaries introduce the present-day reader to Nippon's most striking stories and details.

How wonderful that this remarkable book is now receiving the recognition - and the admiring readers - it has always deserved.
– Annejet van der Zijl, bestselling author and biographer of Franz von Siebold

This publication is the result of a collaboration with Leiden University Libraries. The editors are Kuniko Forrer and Matthi Forrer. Kuniko is a book historian who has worked at Japan Museum Siebold Huis since 2012. Matthi is an art historian and authority on Japan. He is currently a senior researcher on the Japanese and Korean collection at Leiden’s Wereldmuseum.

The Chronicles of Death

155 x 240 mm | 256 pages 68,000 words hardcover with dust jacket all rights available

Literary non-fiction that takes you to the most controversial stage of the 16th century: the scaffold

Witness an execution through the eyes of the executioner, his “patient,” and the crowd, while gaining insight into major events of the time, such as the Dutch Revolt and witch burnings

The Chronicles of Death

Rebellion and executions in the Low Countries

A gaunt, shackled prisoner steps onto the scaffold. The ruthless executioner stands ready, sword in hand. A frenzied crowd gathers, shouting for blood. This is how we often imagine executions in the early modern era.

But is that really how it was? Historian Isabel Casteels studied thousands of eyewitness accounts of executions and, for the first time, reveals what people truly thought. Contrary to popular belief, the public did not see an execution as entertainment, but as a solemn and meaningful event. The crowd watched with a critical eye, often feeling compassion for the condemned. Yet if the executioner, the prisoner, or even fellow spectators failed to meet expectations, chaos erupted – and the audience itself could turn into executioner.

The Chronicles of Death offers a unique perspective on the executions in the 16th century. What unfolded on the market squares of Antwerp, Amsterdam, and countless other towns in the Low Countries? And what do these events reveal about human nature and society at the time? Told through shifting perspectives – from judge to criminal to the corpse itself – this book casts an entirely new light on one of the darkest chapters of Western-European history.

Isabel Casteels studied history at the University of Amsterdam. For her PhD research at KU Leuven and Leiden University, she explored executions in the sixteenth-century Low Countries.

50 Manuscripts from Medieval Europe

For centuries, we have studied the works of Cicero and Horace. We have drawn inspiration from the Book of Job and the world-famous Aratea, the astronomical treatise from around 816 which became one of the most important illuminated Carolingian manuscripts. Our knowledge of the world is built upon the writings of classical and medieval poets, philosophers, theologians, and jurists. But without the diligent monks and scribes of the Middle Ages, these texts would not have been preserved. The modern world would be unimaginable without this transmission of written knowledge.

Written Treasures introduces you to the fascinating world of medieval manuscripts. Fifty remarkable manuscripts have been selected from the treasure trove of Leiden University Library - stunning masterpieces as well as hastily recorded works on second-rate parchment.

Thirty-eight international experts explore their content, appearance, design, and journey through generations of readers and owners to the present day. With beautiful images and accessible texts, this book is essential for history and book enthusiasts alike. It is a celebration of cultural heritage and a tribute to the extraordinary transmission of written knowledge across the ages.

André Bouwman is a curator of medieval manuscripts at the Leiden University Libraries. Irene O’Daly is a university lecturer at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society, specializing in book history, the history of science, and the reception of classical ideas and texts in the Middle Ages.
