The Intuition Paradox Why Gut Feelings Can Be Brilliant — and Dangerously Wrong ‘Wim De Neys is one of the absolute top thinkers in the psychology of reasoning. His insights and research have revitalized the field and changed the way that we think about thinking.’ – Prof. Dr. Gordon Pennycook, Cornell University
The Intuition Paradox 150 x 230 mm | ca. 288 pages ca. 55,000 words B&W illustrations | hardcover all rights available
The Intuition Paradox Why gut feelings can be brilliant — and dangerously wrong Intuition is one of the most fascinating features of the human mind: the ability to reach insights, judgements and decisions quickly and seemingly without conscious effort. We often experience it as a kind of magic: the pilot who makes a split-second decision that saves lives, the coach who spots exceptional talent before the statistics do, or the entrepreneur who makes the right call against the advice of market research. But our gut feelings can also lead us badly astray. Decades of psychological research show that intuition can cause us to misjudge risks, overlook basic logic, follow prejudices and fall prey to persistent reasoning errors, sometimes with serious consequences for society.
Explores both sides of intuition: when it can lead to brilliant decisions and when it can dangerously mislead us
Drawing on vivid examples, classic experiments and the latest research, The Intuition Paradox explores when intuition works brilliantly and when it fails. Can we learn to trust our gut more wisely? Can intuition be trained? And when making important decisions, should we trust our own instincts or those of others?
A timely question for the AI age: the book goes beyond human intuition to explore whether AI can think intuitively (and whether we would actually want it to)
The book also explores a fascinating new frontier: artificial intelligence. As systems such as ChatGPT become increasingly capable, could machines develop something resembling intuition, and would we want them to? Accessible, thought-provoking and firmly grounded in science, The Intuition Paradox offers a nuanced guide to understanding one of our most powerful (and fallible) mental tools.
Wim De Neys is a research professor at the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), based at the Sorbonne in Paris. He obtained his PhD in cognitive psychology from the University of Leuven in Belgium and completed postdoctoral training at York University in Toronto and the University of California, Santa Barbara. De Neys regularly appears as an expert in the media. His research has been discussed in outlets including Radio France, Le Monde, BBC Future, The Independent, Deutschlandfunk, Der Spiegel, and Die Zeit.

"Intuition is not simply good or bad. It is sometimes astonishingly accurate and sometimes dangerously misleading. It can help experts make the right decision in the blink of an eye, but it can also lure us into persistent reasoning errors, overconfidence, and prejudice. The central question is therefore not whether we should trust or distrust intuition, but when, why, and under what conditions we can rely on it. That is what The Intuition Paradox sets out to do."
> OVERVIEW OF CHAPTERS
For the very first time, Wim De Neys presents the major psychological and educational principles emerging from his groundbreaking research on the many facets of intuition in a book intended for a broad readership. – Magda Osman, Professor of Risk Analysis, Decision Sciences, Policy analysis at Cambridge University
While being highly entertaining and accessible, and grounded in new theory and evidence from cognitive science, the reader of Prof. De Neys’ The Intuition Paradox will see real world examples of intuition at play in a whole new light. We know we can't always rely on our intuition so when can we trust it? – Olivier Houdé, Professor of Experimental Psychology at Université Paris Cité, Académie Des Sciences Morales Et Politiques

Cedric De Vlieger spent more than 20 years as a member of the Federal Police Special Forces, an elite unit deployed in extremely dangerous situations. He thought he could handle anything. Until he realised that, like everyone else, he too could break.
Strength Is a Choice 155 x 240 mm | 240 pages 57,000 words paperback all rights available
Most people only know the Special Forces from television and the news. They see the heavy equipment, the weapons, the composure under pressure. But behind the balaclava is a human being of flesh and blood. Someone who makes mistakes, takes hits and whose loved ones suffer from the silent strain of working in the shadows.
Elite agents are trained to cope with extreme pressure: what can ordinary people learn from them about resilience and mental strength?
We live in a time of constant pressure. Work, family, society… everything demands our full attention. Spending years in the red zone takes its toll. Many people feel overwhelmed and no longer know how to move forward. This book is not about heroic stories. It is about the insights that help you stay standing when everything falls apart. Resilience and mental toughness are not innate talents, but skills you can develop.
The author draws on 22 years of experience with the Special Units, translating his insights into practical, immediately applicable advice
Using the OSMEALQ operational model and stories from the field, Cedric shows you how to maintain balance under pressure, how to build resilience through discipline, honesty and rituals, and how to reconnect with yourself and take back control of your life. Cedric De Vlieger spent 22 years working with the Special Units, where he was involved in investigations, hostage situations and other large-scale operations. He has translated the lessons and insights from his career in the Special Units into practical lessons for everyday life, and gives talks and workshops.

Spoiler alert: you sometimes put up walls too. With phrases like ‘When I was your age…’ and ‘One day you’ll understand why’, you’re not exactly inviting your teenager to have an open conversation. That’s why Klaar Hammenecker gives teenagers and parents an equal voice. Through relatable stories, she shows what’s going on in teenagers’ minds and bodies: what they feel and think, how they grow (sometimes in a straight line, sometimes taking the long way round) and why they occasionally veer spectacularly off course along the way. She also reveals exactly why your teenager’s behaviour can sometimes trigger you so strongly, and how you can lose your way with each other along the journey. Above all, she fills your backpack with clear insights, practical tips and easy conversation starters to help you navigate this wonderfully challenging journey together.

When Your Brain Works Differently Understand your executive functions and learn to work with them Why does everything seem to come naturally to other people, while you keep getting stuck? Why do you start full of good intentions, only to find yourself caught up in procrastination, chaos or emotional overwhelm?
When Your Brain Works Differently 155 x 240 mm | ca. 240 pages ca. 70,000 words paperback all rights available
Not just for people with a diagnosis, but for anyone who recognises themselves in sensory overload, procrastination and mental chaos Scientifically grounded, yet written for readers who want to understand themselves, without jargon or academic knowledge
Christel De Bleser shows you that the problem is not a lack of motivation or discipline, but something that is rarely explained: your executive functions. These are the cognitive processes in your brain that enable you to act with purpose, regulate your behaviour and manage your emotions. Think of them as the ‘management team’ of your brain. But when your brain works differently, it simply requires more energy. Through relatable stories, scientifically grounded insights and clear metaphors, you’ll discover how your brain works, why diagnoses often tell only part of the story, and how you can learn to work with your brain rather than constantly fighting against it.
Christel De Bleser studied cognitive and psychological sciences and is an ADHDcertified coach. She runs her own practice, combining international academic expertise with practical experience.

Why We Get Cancer And what we can do about it Although cancer is one of the most common causes of death worldwide, our understanding of how it develops is often surprisingly limited. For some people, cancer really is a matter of bad luck, but certainly not for everyone. In many cases, the underlying risk factors can be identified, understood and even influenced. Why We Get Cancer 150 x 230 mm | 264 pages 85,000 words paperback all rights available
Translates complex knowledge about cancer into accessible and practical insights Featuring clear, scientifically grounded summary tables that provide insight into your own risk of developing cancer Written by a radiation oncologist

In Why We Get Cancer, Dr Westerlinck explains the key risk factors clearly and accessibly. From genetic predisposition and medication use to lifestyle, environment and work, this book offers insight, recognition and, above all, knowledge to help readers make more conscious and better-informed choices for themselves.
Dr Philippe Westerlinck studied medicine at the University of Antwerp and specialised in radiotherapy. In 2025, he obtained his PhD from the University of Liège. He currently works at Liège University Hospital, where he treats breast and lung cancer and conducts scientific research. PMOS affects 1 in 10 women worldwide Brings clarity to a maze of conflicting and misleading information With medical nuance and practical insights
Many women live for years with irregular periods, acne, hair loss or excessive hair growth, weight fluctuations, fatigue, fertility problems or mood-related symptoms without ever receiving a clear explanation that connects the dots. They are confronted with conflicting information and often leave their doctor’s appointment with more questions than answers. In PMOS Decoded, Lieselot Theys cuts through persistent misconceptions, misinformation and falsehoods. She translates complex science into accessible language and shows that PMOS is about much more than hormones. The same diagnosis can cause completely different symptoms in different women, and may therefore require a different approach. This book helps you understand your body better, recognise connections and work with your healthcare professional to find an approach that works for you.
