Tracking Ebola My life as a virus hunter Guido van der Groen • A fascinating story about the history of Ebola • Popular science that reads like a thriller • Written by one of the discoverers of the Ebola virus In the mid-seventies, Guido van der Groen and his colleagues at the Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp discovered the deadly virus Ebola. Forty years later, the virus breaks out again in West-Africa. Why is this virus until today seemingly unstoppable? Could the epidemic have been prevented? Do we have to fear an unprecedented pandemic? To answer these questions, Guido van der Groen, an internationally renowned virus fighter, goes back to where it all began.
The result is an exciting read, which makes critical observations about the present pandemic psychoses and which urges authorities to invest in durable solutions. Prof. Dr. Guido van der Groen is emeritus professor in Virology and former head of the department of Microbiology at the Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp.
As a virus fighter, he dedicated the rest of his career to the study of Ebola, HIV and other viruses. Van der Groen puts this unprecedented manifestation of Ebola into an international health management perspective, lifting his book on the geopolitical shelf as well. The Shadow Of Tambora The biggest natural disaster ever seen Philip Dröge • A wonderful quest for a piece of unknown history • Powerful portrait of the era, but above all a captivating story • Popular science at its best
In April 1815, the largest volcano eruption man has ever known took place on the island of Sumbawa, which was then referred to as the Dutch East Indies. This eruption not only took the locals by surprise, but also the colonial oppressors. The enormous ash cloud that was hovering over the world, made it hail in Sri Lanka and snow in the South of the US. Two natural events that had never been seen before in these regions, and have never been seen since. The book follows the ash cloud across the world, and Dröge describes how the world thought about this unique occurrence. How it was sometimes seen as a natural phenomenon, but in other cases interpreted as a sign from a higher power.
The Shadow Of Tambora tells the remarkable story of this mega-eruption and the rise of modern science. A tribute to science. – Dutch magazine Algemeen Dagblad Philip Dröge has an eye for amusing and often interesting facts. – Het Financieele Dagblad Philip Dröge is a journalist, columnist and the initiator of the popular-science press agency FAQT. He writes for numerous magazines, and is a regular guest speaker in news and discussion programmes on television and radio. Dröge is a regular on Dutch radio station BNR Nieuwsradio, where he talks about the most recent and important scientific developments.

Alzheimer researched What does science know about Alzheimer’s disease? Koos Neuvel and others
• In collaboration with the International Foundation for Alzheimer Research • With the cooperation of dozens of scientists from many different disciplines • A complete and clear overview of the current position in Alzheimer research There is no treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. All attempts to develop a cure have failed so far. Is medical science powerless in the face of this fast-growing disorder? By no means - or that, at least, is the conclusion of Koos Neuvel’s investigations into the world of Alzheimer research. It is a world bursting with new approaches, fresh perspectives and surprising developments, as researchers seek to find the answer to a seemingly endless puzzle. This makes it an exciting world, but sometimes a frustrating one, as the disease is much more complex than had initially been suspected.
Koos Neuvel is a scientific journalist and writer. He is the author of several popular scientific books. In 2014 he published Alzheimer: biografie van een ziekte (Alzheimer: the biography of a disease). Prof. Dr. Harry Steinbusch is a professor of cellular neuroscience and director of the School for mental health and neuroscience at the University of Maastricht. Dr. Minke Kooistra is a neuropsychologist and epidemiologist and works at the ISAO (International Foundation for Alzheimer Research) for the development of scientific research. Drs. Marc J.M. Petit is director/manager of ISAO and has already held different directional and managerial positions in the health sector.

How to become Einstein or Da Vinci? An introduction to science for tomorrow’s homo universalis Metaforum
• Written in an accessible way, by subject • High-level knowledge by renowned specialists in their fields • All subjects are approached from different angles, so that you’ll get the whole picture Almost daily, scientists announce important discoveries on the news. While the one researcher says he found a medicine which should help to eradicate a deadly disease, another researcher announces that he dropped a robot on Mars by making use of a remotely controlled spaceship. The more knowledge scientists gather, the less you’re able to see the big picture. You may find research into stem cells interesting, but you don’t know exactly what its impact is on your personal life. At the same time, you don’t quite get how an architect is trying to diminish social inequality, by designing a city project.
Thanks to How to become Einstein or Da Vinci? the big scientific questions are easily digestible for everyone. In an understandable and illuminating way, more than 50 inspired lecturers of the University of Leuven talk about a wide variety of subjects: ranging from the mysterious expansion of the universe and the determination by the brain and genes, to the creation of life on the basis of DNA. Do you really want to become a homo universalis? This book is the perfect place to start! Metaforum is an interdisciplinary think tank of the University of Leuven, in which study groups brainstorm about important social questions.

The World Book of Love Leo Bormans • A record of worldwide scientific research on love • Full of practical advice • Science presented in an appealing, accessible manner The World Book of Love will take you to the heart of romantic love. What do we know about love? Despite cultural differences, love itself has always existed. It is universal and can take many forms. It is an extremely powerful emotional state. After the worldwide success of The World Book of Happiness, editor in chief Leo Bormans has spent two years studying the international scientific research on love. He succeeded in engaging the most brilliant scientists and unexpected newcomers to describe in their own words what we finally know about love. No butterflies and sunsets. In this book, 100 researchers from 50 different countries share what we know about attachment, passion and commitment; about jealousy, abuse and pressure; from Darwin to science fiction; from hidden secrets to open sex. They explain the system and unveil the mystery. In a global and rapidly changing world
we can all learn from each other. From Asia to America, Europe and Africa. You can find more information on www.theworldbookoflove.com Leo Bormans is a journalist, writer and public speaker. The World Book of Hope Leo Bormans • A record of worldwide scientific research on hope • Including a selection of ten of the world’s most hopeful projects • Full of inspiring examples After the worldwide success of The World Book of Happiness and The World Book of Love, author Leo Bormans has spent two years studying the scientific research on hope and meeting the most prominent experts in the field. Hope is not a luxury of the privileged few. It represents a universal psychological resource that can be found in all corners of the world. Hope is all of this: a tool for envisioning definable goals, a coping resource, an expression of trust and openness as well as a spiritual gift earned by faith or ritual. In the course of a lifetime every individual is apt to experience these different shades of hope. The World Book of Hope is an inspiring quest to the breadth and depth of hope. It offers a universal framework for understanding and using the most powerful tool of mankind: hope. Without hope there is no life. In this book, 100 professional researchers from all over the world share what we know about hope. Not spiritual philosophy but evidence-based knowledge
of recent experiments and life-long research, set in a language everybody understands. This book unveils the secret power of hope in love and relationships, study and work, health and illness, education and care, freedom and prison, management and leadership, therapy and economy, youth and old age. It even shows how we can make pessimism work and how we can benefit from post-traumatic growth: one door closes, one door opens. Leo Bormans is a journalist, writer and public speaker. Mental Capital Elke Geraerts • Top scientist on how we can all optimize our mental capital • New approach based on recent studies on the resilience of our brain • Elke Geraerts is an internationally renowned burn-out expert
The burn-out epidemic is spreading in an unprecedented way. But there is a cure: the more you train your mental capital, the stronger your mental resilience becomes, the better you are protected against stress, a burn-out and other mental problems. In this groundbreaking book, brain expert Elke Geraerts shows you the most important aspects of mental resilience and how you can train it to enhance your mental capital. After all, recent scientific research shows that we have a major impact on our own mental capital. With the right mindset and the right interventions in companies, the chance of getting a burn-out can be significantly reduced.

Love. An Impossible Desire? Dirk De Wachter • An original approach to a widely discussed and popular subject • Avoiding clichés and obvious statements • By the author of the successful book Borderline Times, of which already more than 35,000 copies have been sold English sample chapters available
Love is the most frequently used theme in works of literature, music or visual arts. Still, mankind continues to search for its true nature. We think we are able to define and understand the concept of love, but in fact we are not up to par. Love is as vital as it is unfathomable.
Dirk De Wachter is a psychiatrist-psychotherapist and heads the department of System and Family Therapy at the University of Leuven Psychiatric Centre. He is a family therapy instructor and supervisor in different centres both in Belgium and abroad. He is the author of the best-seller Borderline Times.
Sadly, love is threatened in its very existence by modern consumerism and the harmful illusion that all things can be manufactured and tailored to our needs. Even a therapist turns love into something banal, presuming to be able to measure it and to treat it in just a few sessions. Love, however, cannot be defined so easily. Love. An Impossible Desire? is a plea for normal behavior. Only then, can love work its powers: multilayered, mysterious and paradoxical.

The Last Minute The passing of a philosopher Johan Temmerman • The Last Minute is a cross between a literary novel and a philosophical essay • Flawless in language and insights • It explores the concept of death, the ultimate philosophical topic I don’t remember anything of the beginning. After the end, I won’t remember anything either. I will have gone from nothing to nothing. This is my life story. Just like man goes from nothing to nothing, I do too. Still, life – however short – has been useful. Life isn’t nothing. It’s a moment...
Johan Temmerman first worked as a taxi driver and a fruit picker in Australia. After that, he studied Philosophy and received his doctor’s degree with a study into the common ground between Philosophy and Theology. He teaches Philosophy, and has published De onderstroom van religie en atheïsme.
The Last Minute tells the story of an 80-year-old professor’s last moments. He reflects on the moments that have determined his existence, and re-experiences their intensity. The professor’s death had been announced several months before, when he was studying antique texts in an attempt to find the essence of life. The last text he studied, was the Apocalypse of St. John. With death just around the corner, he interprets this text about the end of the world as a powerful description of dying and death. The novel tells how life is one great cycle of consciousness.

The Testaments Frank Wouters • A captivating story about an inheritance case • Frank Wouters masterly builds up the suspense and intrigue • A wonderful reading experience that will make you smile
As a notary, Elsbeth is used to reading testaments, but why is she so affected by what Lucas wrote in his last will and testament? Of course she vaguely knew him from the village. She knew he was a romantic, a melancholic soul with the talent to easily get out of any uncomfortable situation, and to turn every imminent success into a waste at the very last moment.
Then there appear to be more testaments. Why did Lucas gave them a vague date? And why did he write so many? Elsbeth must look beyond the cloak-and-dagger to find Lucas’ real last wish. Frank Wouters is aware that every moment could be his last. That’s why in the meantime, he leaves you his first novel.
And now he was dead, killed in a bizarre accident. His next of kin are leering at the inheritance like a group of hungry vultures. His testament is full of poetic surprises and mysterious references. The heirs are shocked and confused.

Roxane Paul Sieger • A marvellous coming of age novel • Lose yourself in the beautiful and romantic France • Paul Sieger’s writing style is sensual and captivating
Against the background of the vivid nightlife of the sixties. Roxane sang with a modest voice. I was impressed by her large eyes which brilliantly looked at the public. Her pale skin and slim stature, covered in a tight black dress, were a combination of sobriety and fashionable perfection. Roxane was a sensation. In silent amazement, I gazed at her. For the first time, I realized that cool dignity could also be attractive, even titillating.
Paul Sieger (born in Amsterdam) has seen all aspects of life: he has been an anthropologist, actor, criminologist, consultant and correspondent for a Chinese magazine. Writing has been a consistent factor in his life.
Caspar is 13 years old when he falls madly in love with the beautiful Roxane, who is sadly 17 years older than him. He pursues her to Paris, where he hopes to conquer her heart. That’s how his obsession with the Parisienne of his dreams starts for years on end. How close does she let him?

The Jihad Caravan A journey to the roots of hatred Montasser AlDe’emeh & Pieter Stockmans • Leading international jihad expert on the origins of radicalisation • Based on both thorough academic research and personal experience • Full of clear recommendations for policymakers This title interweaves the gripping story of Belgium’s most famous expert on jihad with sharp insights into Muslim radicalisation and Islamophobia. The Jihad Caravan tells both a social and a personal story. Jihad researcher Montasser AlDe’emeh himself was once, as an uprooted problem youngster, about to leave Belgium to join the armed conflict in the Middle East. Instead, he decided to study the mechanisms that make Western Muslims radicalize and tried to understand the sources of the hate that make youngsters turn to violence. For the book, he spoke to Belgian IS fighters in Syria and travelled along with Middle East expert Pieter Stockmans to his Jordanian hometown Zarqa, the birthplace of the international jihad. They also researched the hate and fear dynamics in Europe.
The result is a compelling read which offers ideas on how to create an integrated society, without fear of a clash of civilizations. AlDe’emeh has become a popular interview partner of late for those wanting to know why Belgium is losing its youth to the jihad. There is likely no other academic in Belgium who is closer to the scene than he is. – Der Spiegel Montasser AlDe’emeh is an Islamic scholar, who researches Islamic radicalisation and international jihad. He is internationally recognized jihad expert and is regularly interviewed on the topic (e.g. The New Yorker and Der Spiegel). Pieter Stockmans is a journalist and has been travelling around the Arab world for 10 years now. His main focus is the radicalisation of fighting groups in the Middle East.

After the war Marc Reynebeau • By Belgium’s most famous historian Marc Reynebeau • A closer look at the aftermath of WW I from an international perspective • Discover in what ways WW I is still noticeable today In his new book, Marc Reynebeau takes a closer look from an international perspective at the dark page in history that WW I is. 1918, the end of the traumatizing WW I is usually interpreted as a historic breaking point, the end of the long 19th century. The end of the war had a number of unpredictable consequences, ranging from the collapse of the 4 great empires to the Russian Revolution. But that doesn’t simply mean that the world started with a clean slate again, on 12 November 1918.
Marc Reynebeau is a historian. He is senior journalist at Belgian newspaper De Standaard, and the author of several best-sellers, such as A history of Belgium. He is often referred to as the Simon Schama of the Low Countries.
Those who were powerful before started looking for other ways to maintain their power. The massive presence of soldiers turned the ‘public’ into a social reality. At the same time, the expansion of political democracy resulted in new methods to discipline the public, or ways to restrict the emancipation of women, workers and even colonized countries. That process remains unfinished up to date.

The Limits of the Market
The pendulum between government and capitalism Paul De Grauwe • An eye-opening analysis of the inevitable oscillation between free market and government • Thomas Piketty’s best-seller on income inequality taken to its ultimate conclusion Will the financial crisis and growing inequality mark a new turning point in the balance of power between the free market and government? Are we about to witness the overthrow of capitalism and will the state resume control? After several triumphant decades, capitalism is well on the way to destroying itself. Key issues such as climate change and rising income inequality illustrate the inevitable external and internal limits of the market. Only the government seems to be able to offer a solution. But the state will also hit limits and, in turn, pave the way for a market comeback. With his new book, Flanders’ most prominent economist makes an invaluable contribution to the debate on the sustainability of our market system. De Grauwe provides an in-depth analysis of the con-
sequences of the disastrous swing of the economic pendulum, which can only be halted by immediate and drastic measures. No one has taught me more on the eurocrisis than Paul de Grauwe. – Paul Krugman, nobel prize winner Paul De Grauwe is an internationally renowned senior economist. He teaches at the London School of Economics and was previously affiliated to the Catholic University of Leuven. He was a member of the Belgian parliament and an adviser to the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso. He is also a columnist for the Financial Times.

The demons of
LEONARD COHEN
The Demons of Leonard Cohen Francis Mus • In search of the real Leonard Cohen • Including unpublished documents, new interviews and in-depth reading • A complete overview of his musical career
Who is Leonard Cohen? During the 50 years of his career in the music business, his entourage and fans have known him as a true gentleman with a certain aura, that is unfathomable and elusive at the same time. But is this description correct? Despite his immense oeuvre, the 80-year-old rocker still remains a mystery. Francis Mus researches the constantly returning demons of Leonard Cohen: his image, his relationship to art, his fundamental solitude, his position towards power. He searched and found ‘pieces of Cohen’ that have never been published before.
A fascinating range of interesting new material out of Cohen’s personal papers and archives. Francis Mus exhibits his expertise in a certain extent that has not yet been noticed by Cohen’s Canadian critics. – Brian Trehearne, McGill University, Montreal Francis Mus is a researcher at the University of Leuven. He travelled around the world to search for the real Leonard Cohen. He talked to privileged witnesses and looked for in-depth information about this Canadian icon.
The result is a revealing look into one of the greatest living music legends of our time.

The Lee Harvey Oswald Files Why JFK had to be killed Flip De Mey
English edition available
• The long-expected sequel to best-seller Cold Case Kennedy • A thrilling read • Includes materials and sources, which have never been published before Did Lee Harvey Oswald even kill JFK? Jurist and author Flip de Mey gives the answer in the sequel to his pioneering best-seller Cold Case Kennedy. The conclusion is bewildering.
Flip De Mey started his career as a lawyer, but took extra training to become a forensic accounting auditor, specialized in unravelling fraud and irregularities in companies.
With the same meticulousness he used to prove that Kennedy was the victim of a conspiracy, De Mey now focuses on the role of Lee Harvey Oswald. He dove into the files, spoke to two lifelong friends of Lee Harvey Oswald, and managed to get his hands on unique pictures of the rifle that was used to kill JFK.
His expertise, experience and specific method for analysing complex matters gave him the perfect tools to investigate JFK’s murder, which he is passionate about.
His conclusion leaves no room for interpretation: Oswald was not the perpetrator of the most famous murder of the 20th century. De Mey suggests that the CIA, amongst others, may have been behind JFK’s murder, as the Agency felt threatened by Kennedy’s policy.
