Licht bevat veel informatie. Om die informatie te kunnen lezen moeten we het licht opsplitsen in afzonderlijke kleuren of golflengten. In het begin van de 19de eeuw analyseerden Fraunhofer en Kirchhof het zonlicht. Tussen de kleuren zagen ze zwarte lijntjes (absorptielijnen of fraunhoferlijnen). Ieder chemisch element blijkt een soort unieke vingerafdruk of streepjescode te hebben van licht en donkere lijntjes. Vanop grote afstand kan je dus het licht ontcijferen en belangrijke informatie krijgen over de eigenschappen van het object dat het licht heeft uitgezonden of geabsorbeerd. In de astronomie is spectroscopie een belangrijk hulpmiddel om de samenstelling van sterren en andere hemellichamen te kunnen bepalen. Sterren worden dan ook ingedeeld naar hun spectraalklasse. Tegenwoordig worden deze spectra nog verder uitgerafeld door computers en kan men nog meer informatie lezen. De volgende generatie van spectrografen zal de grenzen nog verder verleggen en astronomen daarmee naar verwachting in staat stellen om naar sporen van leven te zoeken in de atmosferen van verre planeten.
