R ADICAL VINTAGE

The Art Gallery People from Antwerp are born art dealers and collectors. We are not just referring to the famous Rubens, Mayer van den Bergh, or Franck collections; Antwerp is still one of the beating hearts of the Low Countries’ artistic scene. And there is even now a lot of collecting going on. This is one of these recent collections, the work of two historians, Yoeri Vanlangendonck and David Vermeiren. Yoeri and his partner Brecht Callewaert run the trendsetting Callewaert-Vanlangendonck gallery which plays a leading role in the rediscovery of post-war abstract art. As for David Vermeiren, he delves into artists’ archives and publishes books about them. One can feel their gallery’s museum-oriented approach in the artworks and select design items filling their house. This villa by architect François Dens was thoroughly renovated

very recently by architects Stijn Rolies and Dorothee Dubois who, being the contemporary modernists they are, drew basic plans characterised by very sleek and strong forms. Just look at the nicely aligned kitchen. The house’s four roof terraces, each on a different level, are the work of garden architect Stefan Morael. In the interior we find artworks by Paul Van Hoeydonck, Guy Vandenbranden, Léopold Plomteux, and Mark Verstockt, next to the furniture Cees Braakman designed for Pastoe. Yoeri collects the art and David the vintage design items. Every once in a while, the collection expands a little, but that’s normal for an art cabinet.

An art collection also offers security. This is, of course, what the Tarrazza sofa does, designed by Swiss designer and interior architect Ubald Klug for De Sede in the sixties. It is still one of the most remarkable furniture sculptures from the previous century. An early-sixties abstract Léopold Plomteux painting hangs over the sideboard designed by Cees Braakman for Pastoe, an element from the Japanese series that totally fits in with the aesthetic of De Stijl.

You don’t need major architectural interventions to give an old house a new, modern interior. Here the space was expanded by tearing down inner walls and by the white floor, which creates the impression that everything is floating, even the genuine Harry Bertoia Bird Chair. On the wall hangs a magnificent 1961 goldleaf-and-stones-on-panel piece by Paul Van Hoeydonck, who was just beginning to break through in New York at the time.

In the ‘Zen bedroom’ we again see the white floor that makes all furniture and objects appear to float in space. Here, we also see a Cees Braakman cabinet from the Japanese series with a Harry Bertoia chair next to it. On the floor, against the wall, stands a work by Michel Suephor, the Parisian native of Antwerp who was one of the pacesetters in post-war abstract art at the time and who also gained a name and fame as a theoretician.

Polder House No matter how simple the facade of this house may look, it still has a clear style that refers to Dutch objective or pragmatic architecture. The building was constructed right after the Second World War in a stern style reminiscent of the form language of Gerrit Rietveld, the architect of De Stijl, who was in fact still very active at the time. The house’s resident, designer Derek Van Heurck, loves this ‘architecture without frills’ and especially the sloped roof that sits on top of the house like a little hat. He is one of the creative forces behind the renowned Belgian fashion house Bellerose. He has lived in New York and travels an awful lot, obviously leading a busy life, but likes to unwind here in Zeeland, on this little island in the polder. The house’s windows offer him a view of the farmland and reed belts reaching all the

way to the sea. Compared with the pristine landscape, the house almost looks like a surreal apparition. Derek loves vintage design, rural surroundings, and the natural peace and quiet that flows over you through the windows. His favourite time to be here is when the winds from the northwest are battering the house, making him feel like he is floating on the sea. Derek hardly tinkered with the inner structure of his little building from the fifties because he appreciates its compactness. He did create an open eating and cooking space in the back that connects seamlessly to the sitting corner in the front. He also applied deep, dark patina paint to the walls and chose warm vintage furniture, objects, and lamps. It’s a style that goes well with the collection he is creating, which is nonchalant with an artistic touch. Polder House

The contrast between exterior and interior has a salubrious effect. This Dutch house lies in the middle of Zeeland’s vast polders, braving all the storms. The interior was changed very little, but everything was darkened, providing more intimacy and security, as well as that ‘interior feeling’. Here, you find yourself inside a modernist shell. The architecture from the fifties still bears the mark of De Stijl, which is complemented well by the Hans Wegner table and chairs, above which hangs a special lamp by Swedish inventor Johan Petter Johansson.

NL

The house unfolds on the garden side, towards the greenery. The big window, which is always open when the weather is good, blurs the boundary between interior and exterior, turning this into a fully fledged holiday home. The contrast between the flawlessly shaped architecture and the rough slate terrace is also fascinating to behold. Make sure to note the minimal, almost industrial kitchen island that looks as if it was lifted from a laboratory.

NL
