A number of years ago Micky stepped into our gallery for the first time, with her portfolio tucked firmly under her arm, and wearing a determined look on her face. Yet as she later admitted, she was feeling fairly nervous inside. I can well imagine this, because it is not easy to suddenly expose your whole being to someone you know only by reputation. As an artist, you put your heart and soul into your work: your observations, emotions, and deepest thoughts. You wish to express something, and to convey your own interpretation of that which you show. Will this come across to the viewer? Will it turn out as you had hoped? What will the reactions be? Now, I have the annoying habit of not making any comments the first time I go through a portfolio. I might linger over one image longer than another, but I try to maintain a poker face. This is terrible for the photographer sitting across from me. Often it stops there, either because the work doesn’t fit the gallery or because it’s simply not good work. But with Micky, it was immediately clear that she had talent. She’d been working as a photographer for a relatively short period of time, but had already developed her own visual language. Of course, not all of the photos were equally strong. But which artist is always sublime? We had enough starting points to work together. And we’ve done so ever since, with pleasure. First, we tried out a few art fairs to discover what the public thought. It became evident that the Dutch public recognized Micky as a celebrity because of her career as an actress. This was not a factor abroad. Her first solo show at the gallery attracted a lot of interest and her work was purchased by discriminating collectors. She has earned a place as a serious artist. She is no longer “Micky Hoogendijk, the actress,” but “Micky Hoogendijk, the photographer.” A book is appearing and an extensive museum exhibition taking place. She has produced a great deal of new work, and her common themes are becoming more visible. And really, she has only just gotten started…this promises much!

Een aantal jaren geleden stapte Micky voor de eerste keer onze galerie binnen, haar portfolio onder de arm geklemd en een vastberaden blik in de ogen. Maar, zoals zij later toegaf, van binnen behoorlijk zenuwachtig. Ik kan me dat goed voorstellen, want het is niet makkelijk om vanuit het niets aan iemand die je hoogstens van reputatie kent je hele wezen bloot te geven. Als kunstenaar leg je immers je ziel en zaligheid in je werk: het zijn jouw observaties, jouw emoties, jouw diepere gedachten. Je wilt iets uitdrukken en datgene dat je laat zien een eigen interpretatie meegeven. Komt dat over bij de kijker? Pakt het uit zoals je gedacht hebt? Hoe wordt erop gereageerd? Nu heb ik de onhebbelijke gewoonte om als ik de eerste keer door een portfolio ga geen enkele opmerking te maken. Bij het ene beeld blijf ik wat langer hangen dan bij het andere, maar verder blijft het zoveel mogelijk bij een pokerface. Voor de fotograaf tegenover je is dat natuurlijk vreselijk… Heel vaak blijft het zelfs daarbij. Soms omdat het werk niet bij de galerie past en soms omdat het gewoon geen goed werk is. Maar nu was het me snel duidelijk: dit is iemand met talent. Relatief kort bezig als fotograaf en toch al met een eigen beeldtaal. Natuurlijk nog niet overal en altijd en niet alles is even sterk. Maar welke kunstenaar is altijd subliem? Ruim voldoende aanknopingspunten dus om samen te gaan werken. En dat hebben we sinds die tijd met veel plezier gedaan. Eerst eens uitproberen op enkele kunstbeurzen, ervaren wat het publiek ervan vindt. Dan blijkt dat Micky in eerste instantie wordt vereenzelvigd met haar verleden als actrice en ‘Bekende Nederlander’, iets dat in het buitenland totaal niet speelt. Haar eerste solo-show in de galerie trekt veel belangstelling en haar werk wordt aangekocht door goede collectioneurs. Al snel weet zij een plek te veroveren als serieuze kunstenaar. Het is niet langer ‘Micky Hoogendijk, de actrice’, maar ‘Micky Hoogendijk, de fotograaf ’. Nu is er een boek en een uitgebreide museale expositie. Veel nieuw werk ook en haar rode draad wordt steeds beter zichtbaar. En eigenlijk nog maar pas begonnen… dat belooft wat!
