Eccellente alpinista e fotografo, vittorio sella (1859-1943) realizzò, a partire dagli ultimi decenni del XiX secolo, un’opera unica e a tutt’oggi ineguagliata, rappresentando con la fotografia l’alta montagna. Excellent mountain climber and photographer Vittorio Sella (1859-1943) produced, beginning from the final decades of the XIX century, a unique work unequalled to this day, by representing the high mountains through photography. The corpus he left is a point of no return in the history of photography in qualitative and quantitative terms, as well as for the scientific and aesthetic dimension. Vittorio Sella’s pictures, taken with rigor and intelligence on European and extra-European mountain chains, are a precious source of information on the conformation of the territory and on the climatic conditions for scientists and mountain climbers round the world, and bear witness today in particular to the considerable changes in glaciers that have taken place since then. But mainly they are photographs with high aesthetic impact, able to present us with the force and the enchantment of that encounter with those spectacular places. après de nombreux catalogues de présentation et diverses monographies, voici un ouvrage qui rassemble le meilleur de la production artistique de vittorio sella, à feuilleter librement pour apprécier la beauté de ses photographies et saisir l’esprit qui a guidé son travail, inspiré par un désir de capter le moment laborieusement acquis qui, autrement, aurait été voué à disparaître dans la mémoire. vittorio sella, un pionnier de la photographie en haute altitude, est considéré comme l’un des meilleurs photographes de montagnes. Né en 1859 dans une famille de magnats du textile, il a puisé les passions qui l’ont conduit à réaliser son travail au sein de sa jeunesse, qu’il a vécue dans un contexte de très grande ouverture d’esprit envers l’innovation scientifique, et la recherche culturelle et artistique. après ses études classiques habituelles, il prit des cours de chimie, de tissage et de mécanique, ce qui lui permit de gérer la teinturerie de la filature de laine familiale. il était, comme il le décrivit lui-même plus tard dans sa vie, « Un homme d’action, travailleur depuis son plus jeune âge, enthousiaste face à la beauté naturelle, un rêveur de découvertes physiques et mathématiques ». Vittorio Sella, een pionier op het gebied van fotografie op grote hoogte, wordt beschouwd als een van de beste bergfotografen. Hij werd in 1859 geboren uit een familie van textielmagnaten.
