Across University of Iowa Health Care, 2025 was a year defined by one standard, one team working together, and one unified system of care. As the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care continues to grow into an integrated system, our strength lies in a shared commitment to excellence — one that transcends departments, locations, and disciplines. Whether serving patients at the downtown campus, North Liberty campus, university campus, or in clinics across Iowa, every member of our department contributes to the same high standards patients have come to expect from UI Health Care.

In this year’s annual report, we highlight examples of how we are aligning as one team — strengthening shared foundations, enhancing coordination across the system, and deepening collaboration within all areas of practice. These efforts correspond with the criteria set forth by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®, which set the national standard for nursing excellence. You will read stories that reflect the power of “systemness”: unified onboarding, established professional governance infrastructure, and focused preparations for the next Magnet® designation.

These efforts ensure that every patient, no matter where they enter the UI Health Care system, experiences the same level of skill and compassion. What makes our department exceptional is not just the care we deliver — but how we support one another. Across campuses and care settings, our teams collaborate, share expertise, and innovate to meet the evolving needs of patients, caregivers, and communities.

Together, we are strengthening coordination, advancing practice, and shaping the future of care through education, research, and innovation. Every interaction, every act of service, and every improvement championed by our teams reinforces one standard, one team, and one system of care — working together for those we serve.

ONE STANDARD

Shared structures and processes reinforce one standard and ensure consistency in how care is delivered across all campuses and care sites. A structured onboarding process helps new team members begin with shared expectations and the same understanding of departmental priorities and systemwide standards. Care Coordination and Nursing provide a multiweek orientation that introduces processes and expectations with similar onboarding programs in the Departments of Rehabilitation Therapies and Respiratory Care. All support the same goal: equipping every team member with the knowledge and resources needed to deliver consistent, high-quality care across UI Health Care.

Professional governance at UI Health Care gives nurses and interprofessional team members a voice in shaping practice. Since 1975, the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care has used this framework to involve team members at every level in decisions that influence patient care. The Coordinating Council, co-chaired by the chief nurse executive and the Staff Nurse Council chair(s), serves as the central body that reviews the Statement of Governance each year and oversees the network of councils and committees. Unit Practice Councils guide local improvement efforts, while divisional and system-level councils and committees bring together frontline team members and leaders to review standards, share learning, and strengthen quality and safety across care sites.

The Nursing Informatics team connects practice, documentation, and communication across the system. In 2025, the team supported several major initiatives, including the implementation of workflows and Epic (electronic health record) at the new North Liberty campus and the Epic

transition for Mission Cancer + Blood, which became part of UI Health Care in late 2024. This work helped ensure that Mission’s community-based oncology clinics, long-standing providers of high-quality cancer care across Iowa, are aligned with systemwide standards and fully integrated into UI Health Care’s digital infrastructure. In addition to weekly systemwide optimizations across inpatient and ambulatory care settings, the team further advanced perioperative, telehealth, and obstetric workflows to maintain alignment in documentation and practice across all care sites.

With a strong foundation of unity already in place, the focus now turns to strengthening alignment and growth across the system, ensuring that shared standards are reflected in consistent excellence at every campus and care site.

The Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care Strategic Plan for fiscal years 26–29 provides a roadmap for nursing, aligning nursing priorities with organizational goals and outlining measurable outcomes across three domains (our people, our patients, and our community) while supporting collaboration across Rehabilitation Therapies and Respiratory Care where work overlaps. Each area is applying the plan through a shared framework that connects engagement efforts, quality metrics, patient experience scores, and evidence-based practice goals. Together, these priorities reinforce accountability, clarity, and collaboration across the system.

In keeping with a commitment to one standard of excellence, the core tenets of the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® continue to guide systemwide alignment of practice, quality, and professional growth across all care sites. Nursing teams, supported by interprofessional team members across Care Coordination, Rehabilitation Therapies, and Respiratory Care, are advancing the principles of the Magnet Model® to achieve empirical patient, nursing workforce, organizational, and consumer outcomes. While the formal preparation for the next Magnet® application is led by Nursing, the collaborative work and unwavering support across disciplines strengthens evidence-based care and reinforces this shared commitment to excellence for patients, families, and team members throughout UI Health Care.

ONE TEAM

Across all disciplines, alignment is strengthened through shared education, training, and collaboration. A unified workforce ensures that all team members have the knowledge, resources, and connections needed to deliver the highest standard of care.

The Nursing Clinical Education Center serves as the hub for nursing orientation and ongoing education, introducing standards, fostering shared learning across campuses and care sites, and supporting professional development for nurses and interprofessional team members. A systemwide framework of education and resources supports every discipline across UI Health Care. Team members have 24/7 access to clinical standards and tools through The Loop, an internal communications platform, ensuring consistent practice across all campuses. Programs such as the Nurse Residency Program and Experienced Nurse Fellowship

Program strengthen transition to practice, while leadership, preceptor, charge nurse, and merit staff development workshops provide ongoing skill-building across roles. Certification support, tuition assistance, and a career ladder program further encourage continued growth and excellence. Together, these shared resources equip a unified workforce and team to collaborate effectively and deliver high-quality care across the system.

The Department of Respiratory Care supports workforce training and development by serving as a clinical site for students from academic partners across Iowa and hosting an annual Respiratory Care Seminar, a two-day forum for education and in-person learning attended by respiratory therapists throughout Iowa and from surrounding states. Respiratory Care also advances clinical excellence in partnership with nursing by reducing hospital-acquired pressure injuries linked to respiratory devices through proactive skin assessments and adjustments to prevent undue pressure from these critical devices, improving both safety and patient outcomes.

Within Care Coordination, interprofessional committees and team structures foster shared learning, professional growth, and consistent practice. Pediatric Care Coordination meets monthly to exchange community resources that support patients and has an established Connection Committee whose goal is to build staff engagement through team activities and events. Education and practice committees plan continuing education specific to pediatric care and evidence-based practices. A new simulation lab for families or caregivers, discharging with a child who has a tracheostomy and ventilator support, strengthens hands-on caregiver education. The Adult Care Coordination division holds division-wide meetings and has both an active divisionwide practice council and specialty-based unit councils along with a quarterly Golden Compass Award — all of which reinforce teamwork, collaboration, and recognition.

Innovation remains a hallmark of the department’s impact. Through the Iowa Nurse Innovators Program, nurses and interprofessional team members are developing frontline solutions that improve safety, efficiency, and outcomes — engaging more than 1,500 participants, managing 28 projects, and awarding more than $109,000 in seed funding — that continue to shape daily practice across the system.

ONE SYSTEM OF CARE

As UI Health Care continues to grow as one system, the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care is central to improving how and where patients receive care. Guided by consistent standards and coordinated processes, teams across the department ensure patients receive the right care, in the right setting, at the right time. This coordinated work balances resources, improves patient flow, and enhances experiences across all care sites.

This year, several patient populations transitioned to strengthen access and capacity. Orthopedic patients are now primarily served at the North Liberty campus, while the family medicine inpatient population transitioned to a renovated unit at the downtown campus. Their previous unit at the university campus continues to operate and now supports new patient populations, ensuring beds are used effectively across the system. At the university campus, expanded capacity in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is underway, and the newly completed pediatric emergency space — with larger treatment rooms, added stabilization areas, and a child-focused environment — enhances care for complex pediatric needs. In addition, ongoing renovation and expansion of the Burn Treatment Center is increasing capacity and modernizing care environments, positioning the

unit to serve more of Iowa’s most critically injured patients with coordinated, interprofessional care.

The Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care plays a central role in how UI Health Care functions as one system. Across Nursing, Care Coordination, Rehabilitation Therapies, and Respiratory Care, shared standards, coordinated workflows, and strong collaboration support safe, highquality care at every campus and care site.

As the system continues to grow, this work remains focused on practical alignment, supporting team members, using resources effectively, and ensuring patients receive the right care in the right place. Together, these efforts strengthen daily practice and position the department to meet the evolving needs of patients and communities across Iowa.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF NURSE PRACTITIONERS® (AANP) STATE AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP) State Award for Outstanding Contributions honors individuals who have made significant strides in advancing health care through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership (PEARL) and have demonstrated efforts to advance the image, profile, and visibility of nurse practitioners.

SALLY MATHIS HARTWIG GRADUATE NURSING SCHOLARSHIP

The Sally Mathis Hartwig Graduate Nursing Scholarship recognizes a nurse pursuing graduate education at the University of Iowa College of Nursing.

RICHARD E. GIBSON AWARD

The Richard E. Gibson Award honors merit employees excelling in innovation or exceptional customer service.

UNIVERSITY OF IOWA OUTSTANDING STAFF AWARD

The University of Iowa Outstanding Staff Award recognizes current University of Iowa staff who have made outstanding accomplishments and contributions that significantly benefited or brought honor or recognition to the university.

GOOD CATCH AWARD

The Good Catch Award recognizes clinicians for their professional diligence in having prevented a potential error or “near miss.” A near miss is an event or situation that, if not identified and acted upon, could have resulted in an accident, injury, or illness. A Good Catch event can occur anywhere within UI Health Care and impact anyone, whether patient, visitor, faculty, or staff.

The Clinical Leadership Development Academy is a UI Health Care program that addresses the complexity, breadth, and importance of the developing leader and promotes excellence through clinical scholarship.

BEACON AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE™

The Beacon Award for Excellence™ is awarded by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. For patients and families, the award signifies exceptional care through improved outcomes and greater overall satisfaction. For nurses, the award signals a positive and supportive work environment with greater collaboration between colleagues and leaders that fosters higher morale and lower turnover.

The Lantern Award is presented by the Emergency Nurses Association to recognize emergency departments that demonstrate exceptional and innovative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy, and research.

Innovation Award Recipient — Medical Intensive Care Unit

The Leadership, Education, Gratitude, Advocacy, Clinical Excellence, and Innovation (LEGACI) Awards recognize hospital, non-hospital agency, community, and public partners who go above and beyond to collaborate with Iowa Donor Network (IDN), helping fulfill their mission of “Working Together to Transform Lives Through the Gift of Organ & Tissue Donation.” Twelve awards are presented, each representing a letter from the word “LEGACI.” Six awards honor hospital partners, while the other six recognize community, public, or non-hospital partners.

The Innovation Award recognizes a partner who explores new ways to educate and promote donation, develops and implements breakthrough best practices, and leverages technology to enhance the donation process.

EMERGENCY NURSING LEADERSHIP AWARD

The Emergency Nursing Leadership Award is presented to leaders, including but not limited to directors, managers, charge nurses, and mentors, by the Iowa Emergency Nurses Association, in recognition of exemplary contributions to their department and/or the emergency nursing profession.

EXCELLENCE IN INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION AWARD

The Excellence in Interprofessional Education Award honors the range of non-physician health care colleagues whose significant educational contributions help create the next generation of physicians.

The Award of Excellence in Leadership honors an Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) member recognized by their peers as exemplifying the highest standards of service to nursing and who have made a profound impact on AWHONN and the lives of the mothers and babies under their care.
