Dear Vandal Promise donors,

As University of Idaho celebrates record momentum including welcoming some of the largest incoming freshman classes in U of I history and achieving Carnegie R1 research status, the Vandal Promise Scholars program stands as a powerful example of when a community invests in helping students succeed, powerful things happen.

The scholars featured in this report reflect the promise this program was created to fulfill: expanding opportunity, supporting student success and preparing graduates to lead meaningful lives beyond the university. Their stories of gratitude and achievement showcase the difference this investment continues to make for students, the university and the future.

With gratitude,

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Hunter Brazee

Class of 2026 | Hometown: Post Falls, ID

Computer Science with a minor in Cybersecurity

Thank you for supporting students like Hunter. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

I want to thank the scholarship donors for allowing me and others to learn and pursue future careers. The impact of their support has been the greatest for my parents, as they have not had to help with my finances and have been able to focus on raising my younger siblings without my education being a financial strain.

Fun Fact

I enjoy playing Madden NFL with my roommate in our spare time, and I once beat him 35 times in a row.

n Becoming a Vandal

What I love most about being a Vandal is the experiences. In particular, sporting events like football games. Going to these events with friends and family is always enjoyable. I am most proud of my academic life so far, of adding a cybersecurity minor to my original degree and challenging myself to take additional courses.

n Career Goals

My plans for the future are to focus on the cybersecurity aspect of the technology field. While I enjoy programming, I like fixing things more than creating them, and working in cybersecurity, there are many fixes needed.

n Outside the Classroom

Some activities made possible by scholarships include going to the Student Recreation Center to play basketball or lift weights with friends. I enjoy going to the gym at the Rec Center, and it is a great place to take a break from academics.

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Jazmin Gomez

Class of 2028 | Hometown: Idaho Falls, ID

Studio Art & Design and Psychology

Thank you for supporting students like Jazmin. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

The possibility of pursuing a higher education was unimaginable to me. I did not have the money, but donors like you made it possible for me to attend UofI, and I couldn’t thank you enough. You allow me to make my dreams of helping others come true, be a good role model to my younger brother, and make my parents proud. Thank you.

Fun Fact

Some interesting facts about me are that Spanish is my first language, and I am named after a flower. In my free time, I love writing and folding origami cranes. My favorite colors are blue and pink, but I wear dark green the most.

n Becoming a Vandal

My favorite thing about being a Vandal is the welcoming community at U of I. I was apprehensive when I first switched my major to Studio Art & Design. I believed I was already behind my classmates, who had more time to practice art. However, my teachers reassured me I would improve with time, and my classmates and I shared the joy of creating that brought us close.

n Career Goals

After graduating from U of I with a B.F.A. in Studio Art & Design and a B.S. in Psychology, I plan to get a master’s in art therapy. In the past, art therapy was one of the only tools that helped me when my mental health was at its lowest, and I want to offer that help to others who might need it. Mental health is a topic close to my heart, and I know art can be healing.

n Outside the Classroom

With the help of scholarships, I was able to focus on my studies and become more involved with the arts. This year, I visited multiple art galleries and exhibitions, some of which displayed artwork made by my instructors. This scholarship has also given me more free time, and I plan to use that time to apply as a student trainee at the Idaho Center on Disabilities and Human Development.

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Madison Fink

Class of 2026 | Hometown: Glenns Ferry, ID

Elementary Education with a minor in K-12 Literacy

Thank you for supporting students like Madison. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

I am so grateful for your generosity. Without your help, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t have been able to continue my education without your support, so thank you! Education is deeply important to me, and I am so thankful for this opportunity.

Fun Fact

I used to be a clogger!

n Becoming a Vandal

I love the community that comes with being a Vandal. There is so much support from staff and students, along with connections. I am also involved in Greek Life, and I have gotten to learn new perspectives, grow as an individual and make connections that last a lifetime. I am so grateful to be a Vandal.

n Career Goals

My passion is teaching, and I want to continue to learn how to be the best teacher I can every year. You never stop learning, and that is what I am so excited about. Children are truly amazing, and I want to make an impact in their lives, not only educationally, but personally.

n Outside the Classroom

I am part of Greek Life, where I have truly become a better version of myself. I have held leadership positions where I have grown as a person and stepped outside of my comfort zone. Because of Greek Life, I have a home away from home. I have made so many meaningful connections that will last a lifetime. With financial support, I am able to have field experience inside elementary school classrooms.

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Avery Rinehart

Class of 2026 | Hometown: Moscow, ID

Interior Architecture and Design with a minor in Architecture

Thank you for supporting students like Avery. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

Coming out of high school, I was still unsure of what I wanted to study, but I finally made a decision on interior design and architecture. This was a bold move and very difficult at first, but I slowly started to enjoy the process. Every day, I am thankful for the donors who have decided to help my family and me; without them, this would be Impossible.

Fun Fact

One Interesting thing about me is that I have been a kayak and zipline guide at AWOL Adventure Sports for the past six years. I would have to say that I am one of the coolest guides you could go on a tour of the Snake River with.

n Becoming a Vandal

What I love the most about being a Vandal is the community I am involved in. I have met many lifelong friends here and gained much experience within a few years. This year, we are working on some incredible projects, such as building our furniture and designing an existing structure at the Port of Lewiston. We learn something new every day.

n Career Goals

I am still unsure what my plans are for the future, but I have always wanted to take what I have learned from design and help improve the quality of life for everyone. I am currently enrolled in universal design, and I aim to make any public space useable for all. I am interested in designing everything, but my focus is to make creative, comfortable, clean and healthy environments.

n Outside the Classroom

Over spring break, I set up a meeting with a small firm in Twin Falls, which is where I am from. This was a great experience and helped me gain a little more knowledge on how a professional does their work. I am extremely grateful for any scholarship, and they have made everything possible for me. I would not be able to attend college if it weren’t for the help I have received.

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Jaycie Hillstead

Class of 2028 | Hometown: Hagerman, ID

Agricultural Education with a minor in Animal Science

Thank you for supporting students like Jaycie. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

The only thing I can say is thank you! Because of generous donors I am able to attend U of I and find the sense of community I do. This not only means so much to me but also to my family. I knew from a pretty young age college finances would fall onto my shoulders and I know that with these scholarships the stress is taken off both my family and me. So thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Fun Fact

I’ve lived in six states, so I would have to say my secret talent is adaptability. I can adapt to almost any situation and try to make light of it.

n Becoming a Vandal

I love being a vandal because there is a sense of home here. Every one of my professors wants to see me succeed and is always willing to help me when I’m struggling to understand or just have a general question. One thing I’m very proud of the opportunities I’ve gotten to do. For example, I went to Texas to compete in the North American Colleges and Teachers conference. Although I didn’t win, being able to do that was amazing.

n Career Goals

In my future I want to be an ag teacher. I want to help kids the way FFA helped me. FFA and my ag classes gave me a safe space in school and a new passion I didn’t know I could have. My one goal for the future is even for just one kid to say they found passion in agriculture because that’s one kid I got to show the beautiful things of agriculture and it’s complexity.

n Outside the Classroom

Going to Texas was only possible because of scholarships. Because I had scholarships covering my school costs I was able to afford to go on that trip to Texas and learn more about agriculture in other states. I have also been so blessed to do research projects based on different agricultural fields. Because of that, I have more knowledge to help me with my education.

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Bradley Gilmore

Class of 2028 | Hometown: Coeur d’ Alene, ID

Marketing and Film & Television

Thank you for supporting students like Bradley. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

Scholarship support allows me to continue my education at the U of I while largely funding college on my own. My mom works two jobs and supports me in every way she can, but financially, I have had to be independent. Knowing that donors are helping ease that burden allows me to focus more on school, film and my future goals. I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity and support you provide students.

Fun Fact

Some fun facts include acting, rock climbing and backpacking, all of which I really enjoy and spend a lot of time doing when I can. I also love spending time with my dog Boomer, who is a big part of my life and always keeps things fun. My superpower is doing a wheelie in a wheelchair for up to four hours, which I have trained for over time. Definitely a unique superpower!

n Becoming a Vandal

What I love most about being a Vandal is the connection I’ve built with my professors. At U of I, many of my classes feel personal because I can talk one-on-one with professors, get real-world advice and build genuine relationships with them. One accomplishment I am proud of is winning Best Actor for the second year in a row at the U of I Fall 48 Film Festival.

n Career Goals

My plans for the future are still developing, but I know I want to build a career in both marketing and film. With marketing, I don’t have one specific role in mind yet, but I am confident in my abilities and plan to find a position with a company I genuinely connect with. For film, my goal is to write and direct, creating stories that make people belly-laugh and have a great time.

n Outside the Classroom

Outside of the classroom, one of the biggest opportunities I have had because of scholarships was a one-month study abroad trip in Prague focused on film and storytelling. It was a legendary experience that pushed me creatively and personally while allowing me to explore a new culture. My skills grew quickly, and I still stay in touch with friends I made during the trip. I will never forget it.

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Olivia Green

Class of 2026 | Hometown: Boise, ID

Finance with a minor in Cybersecurity

Thank you for supporting students like Olivia. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

Thank you so very, very much! I want to be involved in this amazing community and learn as much as I can. I have been in and out of the hospital this year, struggling to physically keep going, but also terribly struggling financially. These scholarships made it possible for me to keep going!

Fun Fact

My talent comes from my love of baking! I started a small baking business where I get to share sweet treats across campus!

n Becoming a Vandal

What I love most about being a vandal is the community. I know I have so much support from my staff and peers at my college. Everyone here is so kind, and everyone wants each other to succeed. It is an amazing environment to be around. I am proud that I was nominated to be the College of Business and Economics student spotlighteven when pushing through medical struggles!

n Career Goals

I am not set on what I will do in the future. Exploring finance, cyber security, business analytics, trading and entrepreneurship has been so exciting and inspiring for all of the many things I am capable of doing.

n Outside the Classroom

I have been a part of five clubs, including Women in Business, Barker Trading Club, the Entrepreneurship Club, Vandal Solutions and Graue Scholars, and have been a leader in four of them. I also had an amazing internship last summer with Red Aspen as a financial data analyst, where I discovered a love for coding! I now get to explore that curiosity and may go into cybersecurity!

Fun Fact

A fun fact about me is that I am an identical-mirror twin.

n Becoming a Vandal

What I love most about being a Vandal is the community. I am currently living in Moscow, and even though my classes are online, I still get to be a part of the community.

n Career Goals

I want to get into Hospitality Management. I would love to work at a hotel or in a related area. I currently work at a hotel, and I love being surrounded by people and hearing their stories.

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Adrian Flores

Thank you for supporting students like Adrian. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

I would really like to thank you. At this point I was struggling juggle everything like paying for food, finding a job, Studying - just simply everything. So this brought tears to me and was a blessing. So I thank you so much for that!

Fun Fact

This may sound a little weird, but it’s the first thing that comes to mind; I have double-jointed fingers, so the bend slightly more than other people’s.

n Becoming a Vandal

I really enjoy the engineering program. Going further in my college career and getting the classes for my specific major made me fall in love with my major even more. As a first-generation college student, I haven’t had anyone help me get into college and pay for it. I got that here, as well as academic support. I really needed that since my first semester was rough.

n Career Goals

I want to help advance technology, or even any job that lets me do circuits. If I get that, then it won’t feel like a job, and I would get to help my family to put them in a better position.

n Outside the Classroom

I am currently a peer educator for our college as part of an internship. While it doesn’t directly relate to my major, I have made many connections. I hope to get an internship for my major this summer so I can make even more connections .

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Lucas Madrigal

Class of 2028 | Hometown: Caldwell, ID

Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Entrepreneurship

Thank you for supporting students like Lucas. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

I truly am grateful for this scholarship because it will help me pursue my dream of becoming a mechanical engineer. Coming from a first-generation background, this is not only meaningful to me but also to my family back home, and it will show them that I am capable of achieving my dreams and goals.

Fun Fact

I am able to have strong dedication and commitment because I have a dream of becoming a mechanical engineer, and with the right mindset and attitude, I will allow myself to accomplish this dream.

n Becoming a Vandal

Being a Vandal is very special to me because it has allowed me to make connections and work hard toward my goal. Overall, the relationships I have made are crucial to me because I have met a powerful group of men who are willing to support me and see me succeed.

n Career Goals

What I want to do with my career as a mechanical engineer is to allow myself to become successful and help my family out. Also, with my minor in entrepreneurship, I want to start my own company full of committed and dedicated people who strive for excellence just as much as I do. I want to make an impact in the community by starting my own non-profit organization.

n Outside the Classroom

Ever since I came to University of Idaho I have had a passion for sports I participate in intermural sports here at the university and I also am apart of the fraternity Delta Tau Delta where I was able to create a brotherhood around a successful group of men where they have the drive to succeed just as much as I do.

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Audrey Camacho

Class of 2028 | Hometown: Santa Cruz, CA

Chemistry-Forensics with a minor in Biology

Thank you for supporting students like Audrey. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue my schooling. This scholarship will allow me to continue to go to U of I and Purdue in the career/ field I want. And it would further allow me to continue to live off campus without having to work quite as much, as that was an issue last semester. Thank you so very, very much.

Fun Fact

My brain is constantly working, which is my superpower but also my greatest weakness. I can multitask and focus on so many separate things, but because of how much I can juggle, I forget that I need a break and get incredibly burnt out. But super working brain is about my only “talent,” I would say.

n Becoming a Vandal

What I love most about being a Vandal is the scenery and the atmosphere. The campus is always kept to perfection, and the people there help keep a loving and supportive environment for those who didn’t get that at other schools, like me. This last semester, I faced academic difficulties due to personal hardships, but I overcame them and finished my first year with a 3.4 grade point average!

n Career Goals

I plan to become a forensic medical examiner and help others understand the why, what and when questions about their loved ones. I love how this field can be used in so many different ways, each with its own way of helping people and families.

n Outside the Classroom

During this academic year, I lived off campus due to insufficient financial support, so most of my plans consisted of working two jobs. However, I did get approval to join Student Support Services TRIO program, which has allowed me to focus on my schoolwork when I thought I couldn’t. My interests outside of academics were anything artsy. I love to create things with my hands, like clothes, paintings, drawings, etc.

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Lizvet Vega

Class of 2028 | Hometown: Wilder, ID

Marketing with a minor in Spanish

Thank you for supporting students like Lizvet. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

Thank you so much for allowing me to continue my path here in college. I am a first-generation student, which has been very challenging so far. Still, I am passionate about graduating from University of Idaho and becoming the first in my family with a college degree. Thank you for providing me with this extra support.

Fun Fact

I love being sociable and making new friends. I come from a small town here in Idaho called Wilder. My graduating class had 40 students. I never got to experience meeting people from diverse backgrounds and such. and coming here to U of I has changed that, and I am enjoying my experience so much. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me here.

n Becoming a Vandal

I chose University of Idaho because of the College Assistance Migrant Program. They were a massive support to my family and me. Without them, I wouldn’t be here today. I am a first-generation college student, so there wasn’t enormous support from my parent to go to college. At first, they were against my being 6 hours away from home, but eventually, with much persistence and the help of Victor Canales, I was able to overcome this.

n Career Goals

In the future, I wish to be a marketing specialist for a company or corporation. I have always loved working in teams and feeling like I belong. I am passionate about the idea of giving value to a product or service and understanding the specific audience that we can target. I love the creative side to this business world, and it is essential to connect the consumer to products that are sold.

n Outside the Classroom

This semester, I officially joined the Women in Business Club as the secretary. I am also the social media chair for a newly formed club called El Sabor de la Raza, a Mexican-style dance club. Next semester I am excited to be a part of Vandals Solutions as well!

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Lillyan Brizuela

Class of 2028 | Hometown: Murtaugh, ID

Criminology

Thank you for supporting students like Lillyan. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

There aren’t enough words in the English language to express how truly grateful I am to all donors. I’m a first-generation student and come from a workingclass, lower-income family. Attending a university always seemed like a dream that would never come true, but here I am, thanks to your donations.

Fun Fact

An Interesting fact about me is that I can pop my wrists by applying pressure to the joints - kind of a random and weird fact, but I love doing it because it scares my friends.

n Becoming a Vandal

My Vandal experience has been amazing over the past two years since attending U of I. Coming from a small town with a population of below 1,000 people, I was terrified at first. The idea that someone like me could make it at such a big university seemed far-fetched. But now, I could not have imagined my life without the amazing people and friends I have met because I became a Vandal.

n Career Goals

After graduating in 2028, I plan to attend law school. I am not sure yet whether I will stay at U of I or take another chance and explore a new location. After law school, I pursued that degree and applied my skills as a prosecuting attorney.

n Outside the Classroom

Outside of the classroom, I am extremely busy. I hold several positions in my sorority, Gamma Alpha Omega, including president, national representative, and community service chair. I am also an active member of U of I’s Pre-Law Society, serving as treasurer. Thanks to scholarships from donors, I am able to devote a lot of time to activities.

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Mila Rice

Class of 2026 | Hometown: Boise, ID

Bachelor of Science In Political Science and Bachelor of Science In English

Thank you for supporting students like Mila. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

Thank you for choosing to invest in me. Affording me the ability to pursue a rich education and cultivate my passions is actively opening doors to opportunities I never thought I’d have. Financially, your effort has a major impact on my plans for undergrad, law school and career success. Emotionally, it motivates me to push through and stand confidently, knowing that my future is worth investing in.

Fun Fact

I’ve been dancing since I was three years old! I do ballet and am a nationalqualifying, Open Champion Irish Celtic step dancer. I adore oil painting so much. I also love acrylics, markers, graphite or anything I can use to create! I repurpose as much as I can, using cardboard, clothes, mirrors, etc., as canvases. I made a “mud kitchen” with bark plates and leaf-cakes as a kid —I still love baking!

n Becoming a Vandal

One of my favorite parts about being a Vandal is the interconnectedness between faculty, students, alumni and even the broader Moscow community. I’ve been able to accomplish so much solely because of that support: I was elected captain of Uof I’s Mock Trial team because instructors recommended the class and encouraged my leadership and passion for a future in law.

n Career Goals

I plan to attend law school, and then practice as a criminal prosecutor and eventually be a judge. Litigation, case rulings, crafting impactful narratives from testimony and evidence —all of it fascinates me. But more importantly, I’m passionate about becoming the person I, and so many others throughout my life, need. I want to make a difference, help those in need and uphold real, true justice.

n Outside the Classroom

I am a Cook Undergraduate Research Journal editor, mock trial team captain, pre-law society and political science club member, ballet and Irish dancer, pianist, artist and passionate learner, thanks to donor generosity. As a self-sustained 19-year-old, scholarships not only allowed me to graduate with two degrees and an array of passions —they’re why I can afford college at all.

VANDAL PROMISE SCHOLAR

Tianna Dirks

Class of 2027 | Hometown: Kuna, ID Medical Sciences

Thank you for supporting students like Tianna. Below is a message from your scholarship recipient.

Message of Gratitude

It gives me the opportunities that I can’t give myself and that my parents can’t give me, which makes me incredibly grateful.

Fun Fact

Some really interesting facts about me are that I’m a first-generation college student and the first out of my family to go into the medical field and succeed.

n Becoming a Vandal

I love the area that comes with living in Moscow. I also love how friendly people are here; it’s pretty refreshing. I would say I’m most proud of my new studying habits and how I feel I have applied myself more this year, since it is my first semester here as a transfer student.

n Career Goals

My plan for the future is to attend medical school, either MD or DO, whichever is the best fit for me and my future goals. Still, I plan to take a gap year that might include Peace Corps or AmeriCorps to help get more hands on experience and allow me to help those in need. I love that I will get to save lives in the future.

n Outside the Classroom

Scholarships helped fund my tuition, and I am extremely grateful for that. I have not yet had the opportunity to participate in outside activities.
