A MESSAGE FROM THE FIRST YEAR REPRESENTATIVES!
WELCOME BACK!
My name is Melissa Schmidt-Weymans and I am from San Diego, CA. Go BOLTS! Before applying to UIC I always found a reason work trip or personal to visit Chicago because the city is breathtaking, and the people are beyond friendly. I landed at UIC because of the promising preceptorship program. I look forward to being in the field with likeminded individuals and working passionately for a system I respect and believe in. As a first-year rep I hope to bring our cohort together for socials, studying and events which I know will help us form bonds that will last a lifetime.
Hi! My name is Alisiyah Daya and I am extremely thrilled to have moved to the beautiful Chicago from Toronto, Canada. I completed both my BS and MS at Western University, a city a couple hour outside of Toronto. Fun fact: Chicago is actually considered a "twin city" to Toronto! I chose to come to UIC in particular largely due to the preceptorship program. I'm excited to continue my academic journey towards my MHA degree, and to ultimately work in operations, strategy or system improvement. As a first-year rep I am looking forward to getting to know everyone better and create long lasting memories with you all! mbhjb

51st ANNUAL NAHSE CASE COMPETITION

Project Title: “Bridges to Health: Improving Health Outcomes for Global Health Systems” This National Association of Health Service Executives 24th annual Everett v. Fox Case Competition 2019 addressed the issue of how homelessness impacts healthcare systems in the San Francisco area. The three areas of impact included High Utilization of ED and Inpatient Services, Lack of Access to Primary Care Services, and a Fragmented Social Services Referral System. Our team addressed this issue with a three-pronged strategy to increase engagement, enhance access to treatment, and improve system coordination. The first phase consisted of utilizing mobile primary care clinics and collaborating with the Downtown Streets Team. The second phase included enhanced navigation and support services with the addition of case managers and technological tool that increased client access to social services. The third phase consisted of creating a primary care continuum and support for individuals experiencing homeless within our referral network. Utilizing these three strategic initiatives as the crux of our solution to the homelessness impacting healthcare utilization in San Francisco our team made it to the semi-finals placing in the top 10 teams in the competition. We are humbled honored by the opportunity to represent the University of Illinois at Chicago’s MHA on a national stage. Special thank you to our coaches Larry Wrobel and Katie Carow for their unwavering support throughout this process.

ADMINISTRATIVE FELLOWSHIP PLACEMENTS! We are proud that eight second year MHA students have been placed in Administrative Fellowships. This is the highest placement in Fellowships thus far for the UIC MHA program!

2019 – 2020 MHA Buddies! UIC AFHA’s MHA Buddy Program offers a first-year student to be paired with a second-year student within the program to help the new MHA students assimilate into their new and diverse environment of graduate school. A second-year student provides guidance, motivation, and emotional, social and academic support to their assigned buddy. They are also friends with their buddies outside of school! Fall 2019 Volunteering Events
September 7, 2019 AFHA board members along with many second years had fun participating in the 34th annual Hunger Walk. MHA students cheered on the walkers, runners and bikers while participating in the walk themselves. The Hunger Walk is Chicago’s largest annual anti-hunger rally raises funds and awareness to end hunger. Hunger Walk took place in Jackson Park and was two miles long. The event supports our network of soup kitchens, pantries, and shelters. The Chicago Food Bank also donated $12 worth of food for every person that volunteered to hungry/starving college students.

November 3, 2019 AFHA members volunteered bright and early at the Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k. MHA students participated in the volunteer tents handing out merchandise to all of the participants running and walking in the race. Make-AWish® is the official race charity of the Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k! Make-A-Wish® creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Established in 2008, the inaugural Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k ran through the streets of Chicago, Illinois.
