Sfogava con le stelle
Raging under the stars, un infermo d’amore
A lover sick at heart sotto notturno cielo il suo dolore.
Gave vent to his woes under the nocturnal sky E dicea fisso in loro:
And gazing starward said: «O imagini belle
“O you lovely images de l’idol mio ch’adoro,
Of the idol that I adore, sì com’a me mostrate
Just as you show me mentre così splendete
Her rare beauty la sua rara beltate,
As you beam so, così mostrat’ a lei
Likewise show her i vivi ardori miei:
My burning passion. la fareste col vostr’aureo sembiante
With your resplendence you would make her pietosa sì come me fate amante.»
As merciful as you have made me loving.”
Text from Song of Solomon (7:11-13)
Veni, dilecte mi, egrediamur in agro,
Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the field, commoremur in villis,
Let us lodge in the villages, mane surgamus ad vineas,
Let us get up early to the vineyards, videamus si floruit vinea,
Let us see if the vine flourishes, si flores fructus parturiunt, whether the tender grape appear, si floruerunt mala punica: whether the pomegranates bud forth, ibi dabo tibi ubera mea.
There will I give thee my loves. Mandragorae dederunt odorem
The mandrakes give a smell, in portis nostris and at our gates omnia poma: nova et vetera, all manner of pleasant fruits, new and old, dilecte mi, servavi tibi. my beloved, which I have laid up for thee.

Adapted from the Divine Office (Lauds) for St. Cecilia’s Day
Domine, exaudi orationem meam. Lord, hear my prayer.
The musicians played, and Cecilia sung unto the Lord, saying: ‘Let my heart be undefiled, that I be not ashamed.’
Cecilia famula tua, Domine, Cecilia, your handmaiden, Lord, quasi apis tibi argumentosa deservit busy like a bee did serve thee.
O Lord.
As dawn was fading into day, Cecilia cried, saying: ‘Arise, soldiers of Christ, cast away the works of darkness, put on the armour of light.”
Cecilia famula tua, Domine, Cecilia, your handmaiden, Lord, quasi apis tibi argumentosa deservit busy like a bee did serve thee.
O Lord.
Jau saulutė leidžias
Traditional Lithuanian words (translated by Colin Mann)
Jau saulutė leidžias artyn vakarėlis
Already the sun is setting uždengė šviesumą tamsus debesėlis. Evening has covered the brightness with a dark cloud. Sugulė žvėreliai prie sausų kelmelių, The animal lays down by the dry stumps, sutūpė paukšteliai ant medžių šakelių,
Birds perched on tree branches, tik aš mergužėlė neužmiegu.
Only I, the little girl, do not sleep.
Text by Sara Teasdale (1884-1933)
Oh day of fire and sun,
Pure as a naked flame,
Blue sea, blue sky and dun
Sands where he spoke my name;
Laughter and hearts so high
That the spirit flew off free, Lifting into the sky
Diving into the sea;
O lux beata Trinitas
Oh day of fire and sun
Like a crystal burning, Slow days go one by one, But you have no returning.
Latin text by Saint Ambrose (ca. 340-397); English translation by John Mason Nele and James Ambrose Dominic Aylward
O lux beata Trinitas
O Light, eternal Trinity, et principalis Unitas, sole, undivided Unity, iam sol recedit igneus, the fiery sun now goes his way; infunde lumen cordibus. light in our hearts Thy sacred ray.
Te mane laudum carmine,
To Thee our morning-lauds of praise, te deprecemur vespere: to Thee our evening-songs we raise; te nostra supplex gloria oh, may it still our glory be per cuncta laudet saecula. to hymn Thy name eternally.
Deo Patri sit gloria,
And all praise to the Father be; eiusque soli Filio all praise, Eternal Son, to Thee; cum Spiritu Paraclito, all glory, as is ever meet, et nunc, et in perpetuum. to God the Holy Paraclete.
The past three decades have seen marked growth for professional choral singing in the United States. In the early 1990s, there were only a few truly professional choirs doing regular work in the U.S., most of which rehearsed on a weekly model using the same mostly-local roster all season long. Today, many companies rehearse on a “project” model, where singers from all over the country are engaged for singular projects, travel to a city, rehearse intensely for a few days before the concert, perform, and then scatter again. The UGA Choral Project seeks to imitate this project model, and provide our students with a near-professional experience during their study at UGA.
Each semester, Choral Project builds its roster alongside an intensive rehearsal schedule, usually spanning no more than two weeks. Because of its project-based structure, size and membership vary each semester. It should appeal to those seeking a high-level choral experience within a compressed time frame. Choral Project Music Director Colin Mann is Assistant Professor of Music and Associate Director of Choral Activities at the University of Georgia.
