David Childs, euphonium King Edward III once said: “If you want to train a longbowman, start with his grandfather.” This adage holds just as true for British euphonium soloist David Childs, born in 1981, to a family whose name had been synonymous with brass for the last two generations. His grandfather John was a well-respected euphonium player from the Welsh Valleys who inspired his sons, Robert & Nicholas to take up euphonium. Robert began teaching his son David from an early age and in recent years David has emerged as one of the finest brass soloists of his generation. In the year 2000 he broke new ground for the euphonium becoming the first euphonium soloist to win the brass final of the televised ‘BBC Young Musician of the Year’ which led to David’s highly acclaimed première performance of Philip Wilby’s Concerto for Euphonium with the BBC Philharmonic under Yan Pascal Totelier. In the same year David was awarded the coveted ‘Euphonium Player of the Year’ title, a title he won again in 2004 and still holds today. Since that time David has been instrumental in raising the euphonium’s profile in the classical world of music and has not ceased to wow audiences with his astonishing technique, extrovert musicality and engaging stage presence. Still in the early stages of his career, David has already toured extensively performing as a soloist in Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Japan, Hong Kong, Europe and the U.S.A. He is a keen advocate of new music and has premièred ten concerti for euphonium including a Royal Albert Hall BBC Proms broadcast of Alun Hoddinott’s, ‘Sunne Rising - The King Will Ride’, a Carnegie Hall US première of Karl Jenkins’ Concerto for Euphonium & Orchestra, and a UK première of Christian Lindberg’s Concerto for Euphonium & Orchestra directed by the composer. He has also been featured in the Classic fm, Gramophone, Classical Music, and MUSO magazines. David has appeared as soloist with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Concert Orchestra, Sinfonia Cymru, DCINY Symphony and BBC Philharmonic; made solo appearances at the Singapore International Festival, Welsh Proms, Harrogate International Festival, Cheltenham Festival, Melbourne International Festival, BBC Proms and New York Festival; performed solo recitals at the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room and Bridgewater Hall; given Concerto performances at the
GUEST ARTIST AND BAND BIOGRAPHIES Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Symphony Hall, New York’s Lincoln Center and London’s Royal Albert Hall; and regularly records as a solo artist for radio, television and commercial disc. Having already achieved a great deal as a euphonium soloist David has received many awards in recognition: a Silver Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians; a Star Award from the Countess of Munster; the Musicians Benevolent’ Sir Charles Leggett Award; the Welsh Music Guild’s Leo Abse & Cohen Award; the BBC Radio Wales Soloist Award and the Harry Mortimer Award for Outstanding Achievement amongst others. Having studied at both the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music David is now an Associate of the Royal College of Music London; a Professor at both the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, and the Birmingham Conservatoire; an Artist for the Buffet Group Besson, Alliance and Reunion Blues; and a Director of Prima Vista Musikk publishing. A proud product of the British brass band movement David has performed with many of the world’s premiere brass bands including Brighouse & Rastrick, Black Dyke and Cory with whom he was principal euphonium for 10 years. He is a founder member of the highly successful brass quartet Eminence Brass and Artistic Director of Wales’ premiere wind orchestra Cardiff Symphonic Winds. David is undoubtedly leading the way for euphonium players worldwide. For further information visit: www.davechilds.com Southern Staff Band of the Salvation Army Nick Simmons-Smith, Bandmaster The USA Southern Staff Band represents the fifteen states that form the geographically expansive USA Southern Territory with members traveling hundreds of miles for rehearsals and performances each year. A high caliber of musicianship and a strong motivation for an effective music ministry are hallmarks of these men and women. Beginning with the commencement of the USA Southern Territory in 1927, the USA Southern Territorial Band has been closely linked with the history of the Salvation Army in the South. The Territorial Band has traveled extensively throughout its history. In 1990 the band represented America at The Salvation Army’s International Congress in London, England, where they participated in programs at Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Arena, Westminster Central Hall, and a special performance at Buckingham Palace. In 1996 the Band returned to tour England and Scotland and five years later toured Brazil. In 2006 the band was featured at a Congress in Russia, celebrating 15 years of the Army’s work in that country. The band also participated in the 2016 North American Brass Band Festival held in Long Beach, California and were featured at the Boscombe Easter Convention during their UK tour in 2018. The band’s main mission finds them traveling extensively across the South, from Oklahoma to West Virginia, from Texas to Florida and all points in between, supporting music and ministry. Band members include teachers, music directors, accountants, and students, as well as Salvation Army employees and officers (pastors).
ARTISTIC TEAM BIOGRAPHIES
Bandmaster Nick Simmons-Smith is from Chelmsford, England, and since 2009 has served as Territorial Music Secretary for the USA Southern Territory, responsible for the Music and Creative Arts programming for the Salvation Army. Philip Smith, UGA British Brass Band Bandmaster William F. and Pamela P. Prokasy Professor in the Arts Trumpet Philip Smith joined the Hugh Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia as the William F. and Pamela P. Prokasy Professor in the Arts in August 2014. In addition to teaching his trumpet studio, he is the Bandmaster of the UGA British Brass Band, member of the faculty Georgia Brass Quintet, and coach of the Bulldog Brass Society. This new position follows his retirement from the New York Philharmonic after 36 years of service as Principal Trumpet, having joined the New York Philharmonic in October 1978. Mr. Smith’s father, Derek Smith, a renowned English cornet soloist, provided his early training. He is a graduate of The Juilliard School, having studied with Edward Treutel and William Vacchiano, former Principal Trumpet of the New York Philharmonic. In January 1975, while still at Juilliard, Sir Georg Solti appointed Mr. Smith to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Smith has appeared regularly as soloist, recitalist, chamber orchestra performer, and clinician. He has been featured as a soloist with the Philharmonic performing with conductors Zubin Mehta, Kurt Masur, Erich Leinsdorf, Leonard Bernstein, Neeme Järvi, Lorin Maazel, Alan Gilbert and Bramwell Tovey. Repertoire highlights have included the world premiere of Joseph Turrin’s Trumpet Concerto with the New York Philharmonic (1989) and its subsequent European premiere with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (1994). Additional New York Philharmonic performances have included the U.S. premiere of Jacques Hetu’s Trumpet Concerto (1992), the world premiere of Lowell Liebermann’s Concerto (2000), and the world premiere of Siegfried Matthus’s Double Concerto for Trumpet, Trombone, and Orchestra (2003). He has also been a guest soloist with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, and the symphonies of Edmonton, Newfoundland, South Dakota, Sioux City, Cedar Rapids (Iowa), Columbus (Indiana), Pensacola (Florida), Hartford (Connecticut), and Beaumont (Texas). Since being at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, Mr. Smith has on occasion performed as an extra in the trumpet section of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra during the 2017 – 2019 seasons. On October 14, 2023, Philip Smith was awarded the Edwin Franko Goldman Memorial Citation from the American Bandmasters Association during the performance of the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s British Brass Band. The award was presented by composer, conductor and educator James Curnow. Smith joins the ranks of Meredith Wilson, Carl “Doc” Severinsen, and John Williams, who have received this honor, beginning with Captain Harry F. Guggenheim in 1962.
