MASTER'S THESIS BY UFUK SENCANLI
"Reimagining Industrial Heritage:
A Cultural Hub for Ghent’s Old Dockyards”
This project presents a master's thesis that transforms Ghent's forgotten industrial past into a vibrant cultural future. This project proposes adaptive reuse for the Old Dockyards, specifically focusing on the Triferto Factory, to create a dynamic public space.
Inspired by Corboz's 'palimpsest' idea and Jane Jacobs' concept of Urban Vitality, the thesis views cities as layered stories, preserving historical elements while integrating new functions. The design reinterprets the factory's linear flow, transforming old conveyor lines into pedestrian bridges and industrial containers into creative workshops and retail spaces. This approach allows for the "production of culture" where materials once flowed, making the factory a living archive and a vital hub for community interaction and memory.
