DONORS EMPOWER A.M. SUMMER TEAM TO SERVE 100+ CHILDREN How important is the heart of a child? How sensitive is it to outside influences, both bad and good? How many “truths” about ourselves and the world do we learn as children and cling to into adulthood, unwittingly shaping our lives to fit that self-concept? Big questions, but important ones. Now more than ever, children need Godly influences in their lives to help shape their ideas about God, themselves, and the world – as aligned with the truth of Scripture. Thanks to donor support, the Appalachian Ministries (AM)
summer team served as mentors and friends to more than 100 Appalachian children, most of whom live in unstable homes and need positive, stable influences as much as possible. At the beginning of the summer, the AM team spent 10 days in Georgia receiving leadership training at a partner church and ministering to the church’s children. The team then spent four weeks serving children near University of the Cumberlands’ campus. They rotated between the four AM sites – at Corbin Manor, Brush Arbor apartments, Mackey Avenue, and in Story continued on page 2

Jellico – so that they could spend one afternoon at each site each week from Tuesday through Friday, then review and regroup on Mondays. This was the first year that Caitlyn Howell, director of AM, has led the summer AM team and had the chance to repeat the summer’s schedule (instead of revising it due to COVID precautions or other reasons). She said being able to follow a set plan instead of reinventing the wheel was a relief. And it helped her focus on her goals for the summer.

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” matthew 19:14 (NIV) Goal #1: Teach children the Gospel and help them understand it. The summer curriculum’s theme was “Jesus’ Journey,” and each week focused on a different aspect of Jesus Christ’s life on Earth – His birth, His miracles, His crucifixion, and His resurrection. Cumberlands students on the AM team spent time each week reviewing the prior week’s lesson before teaching the kids the next lesson. They used skits, arts and crafts, and music to help the kids grasp the lesson.

Goal #2: Be Godly examples for the children to follow. You’d be surprised what children learn during simply play time or snack time. Kids are the best observers, so the AM students did their best to behave like Jesus would in every moment of their interaction with the children. Prayer and preparation helped. Goal #3: Find out ways the Lord was already working in the children’s lives and brainstorm ways to step into that current and help the Holy Spirit’s work along. In Howell’s words, she didn’t want the AM team to just “make things happen,” she wanted them to keep their ears and eyes open to what God might already by doing in the children’s lives and figure out ways to step into that. After all, the Lord is alive and active – He doesn’t just wake up when summer camp starts.

The AM team came together this summer and pushed through hot days, new team dynamics, and unexpected circumstances to embody Matthew 19:14, “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’” Thanks to donor support, Lord willing, more children know the Lord personally now than at the beginning of summer. After all, that's the real point.

MY HOMETOWN USED TO THRIVE ” DONOR-FUNDED SCHOLARSHIPS ALLOW STUDENT TO ATTEND CUMBERLANDS
Hi, I’m Nikki, and I’m a senior from Harlan County, Kentucky. My hometown used to thrive as the heart of a coal mine, but now that that’s nonexistent, my town and family have suffered greatly from the decrease in population. My family would do anything for each other at the drop of a hat. My dad is paying for three kids in college at once, so Cumberlands cutting tuition and including free textbooks was a big reason I decided to attend the university. I am an Elementary education major and am also completing a certification in P-12 special education. My goal is to complete my undergrad and go back home to teach and give back to my community for how much they have supported me. I am a member of the education club and SGA (Student Government Association), for which I am a chair member of campus improvements. I’m also a work-study in Student Affairs. College would not have been possible without the scholarships I have received. I want to thank you for helping me get my education!

MEET OUR STUDENTS
HUNG-JU "ROBERT" WU, '23 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & BUSINESS "Hi, everyone! My name is Hun-Ju Wu, but you can call me Robert." Robert is from Taiwan and is receiving an athletic scholarship to play tennis. He wouldn't be able to attend Cumberlands without the scholarship, as his costs as an international student are high. He is deeply grateful for the chance to receive an education in America while playing tennis for a coach who has become a mentor. "Coach Tan is my coach and one of my professors. He is awesome," said Robert. "I have been taught how to be a better person, on the court and off." Robert works at the campus bookstore in his free time. He hopes to return to Taiwan after graduation and become a computer engineer, potentially even running his own business.
SHANNON DILLOW, '23 PSYCHOLOGY Shannon is from North Canton, OH, and is receiving a scholarship to be a resident assistant (RA). "I live seven hours away, and this scholarship allows me to stay on campus by assisting with my room and board fee," Shannon said. "It is a huge blessing. Being an RA has grown me and helped me be the person I am today!" Through her experience as an RA, Shannon has learned how to better work with others and how team members' different strengths and weaknesses can come together to create the best team possible. Her favorite part of her job is building relationships with her dorm's residents. She knows college can be difficult, and she enjoys helping girls walk through it. Shannon is extremely thankful for the donations that provide her RA scholarship. She loves being an RA and appreciates everything the position has taught her.
ELTISHA "TEESH" MAJOR, '24 BIOLOGY Teesh is from the Bahamas and is receiving an academic scholarship and a Christian Leadership Scholarship. "These scholarships have set a standard for me and helped me strive to do my best in the classroom, and they're a big help for my family," said Teesh. "The CLS is more personal for me. It inspires and trains me to share the love of God to others on campus through ministry. It's definitely an honor for me." Maintaining high grades to keep her academic scholarship has taught Teesh better time management and the importance of keeping a positive attitude. Meanwhile, her activities in Campus Ministries for her Christian Leadership Scholarship have taught her the power of community. Meeting fellow Christians and working hard for her grades has changed Teesh's life for the better.
SAMUEL "BLAKE" MCCULLAH, '24 BIOLOGY & CHEMISTRY Blake is from Williamsburg, Kentucky, and is receiving a George I. Alden Half-Tuition Scholarship. "This scholarship is extremely valuable for me," he said. "I want to attend medical school to become a diagnostic radiologist, and medical school is very expensive. Any money I can save now will be put toward my graduate education." Blake stays busy studying, doing lab work, and finishing homework so he can complete his double major in biology and chemistry with as high a GPA as possible. He also holds a work-study position during the academic year, working as a TA (teaching assistant) in one of the chemistry laboratories. Blake chose Cumberlands based on the reputation of its science programs, and it's safe to say he is experiencing those programs for all they're worth. He is grateful for the opportunity.

"We were speechless when Rocky, the MO director, called and told us we had been chosen. We were quiet for long enough that he went, 'Are you there?'" Tony said. "There are no words to describe how shocked we were. I had lost a little sleep worrying about what the best decision was for our housing, to be honest. Receiving this new home is a massive blessing." Jennifer added, "We're just in awe of this opportunity and are so excited. Our kids will come home after their classes at college and walk into a brand-new house. Tony and I are working through college too. This is just an amazing journey. God is so good." The home includes three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a mud room, and two bathrooms. It sits on a one-acre plot of land and boasts a beautiful sunrise view. As always, throughout the process, MO gave the family the final say in paint colors, flooring, siding, hardware – everything they could personalize to make it their own home. The MO team worked hard to make the home excellent in every way. "We take Colossians 3:23 very seriously, which says to work as unto the Lord and not unto man," said Rocky. "We know the Lawsons will be living in this new home, but we build as if it's Jesus who'll be living here." He added, "Besides which, the Lawsons are wonderful people anyway." Mountain Outreach is extremely thankful to the contractors and framers who fit MO into their schedule to work, and the Lawsons are very thankful for their new house and the donors who made it possible.
