TOM DUENING EL POMAR CHAIR FOR BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP COLLEGE OF BUSINESS Tom Duening credits his mentors for sparking his passion for entrepreneurship during graduate school. Now, he’s paying it forward. Since 1984, he’s created 10 businesses, authored more than 60 publications and helped establish more than 100 startups. At UCCS, he’s elevated students through new ventures such as The Garage at UCCS, TEDxUCCS, a minor in entrepreneurship and more. “The most rewarding part is consulting with students and local entrepreneurs to help guide them through entrepreneurship,” Duening said. “I’m available as their free consultant for as long as I’m breathing.” Duening challenges his students to practice the five virtues of entrepreneurship throughout his course: create value for others, respect the judgment of the marketplace, honor your contracts, be resilient and be resourceful. He believes students should be the entrepreneur they can be, not the entrepreneur somebody else is.
RHONDA WILLIAMS PROFESSOR COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Rhonda Williams has received 12 awards, including National Middle School Counselor of the Year in 1991 and National Counselor Educator of the Year in 2012, both from the American School Counselor Association. In October, she became the namesake and first recipient of the Rhonda Williams Lifetime Achievement Award from the Colorado School Counselor Association. Now, she teaches others how to become school counselors. “This is my profession; this is my passion. I want graduates to be the best they can be when they walk out that door because they’re going into my profession.” In 2001, she joined UCCS, where she’s a professor of counseling and human services in the College of Education. She also coordinates the school counseling program.
TERRY BOULT EL POMAR ENDOWMENT PROFESSOR OF INNOVATION AND SECURITY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE Terry Boult heads for the slopes about 50 days each season, and what he carries in his pocket has nothing to do with snowboarding or skiing: his UCCS business cards. “I gave out five business cards [in one day] at A-Basin on the chairlift. They’re always in my jacket.” Boult chats with strangers, asking where they live and what they do, looking for opportunities for students in the UCCS Bachelor of InnovationTM, a degree program he founded. Teams pair with businesses for hands-on experience. Boult, an El Pomar Endowed Professor of Innovation and Security, uses time on chairlifts to find businesses that could be good matches for students.
CHRISTOPHER BELL DIRECTOR OF GRADUATE STUDIES / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR COLLEGE OF LETTERS, ARTS AND SCIENCES Christopher Bell grew up with friends who lived on the same block, attended the same schools and went to the same events, but they all turned out to be vastly different as adults. “Different careers, different lives. But also, completely different ways of seeing the world, which makes me wonder how they could see it the way they do when we all basically came from the same places and spaces,” Bell said. His curiosity turned into a career. As an associate professor of media studies at UCCS in the Department of Communication, Bell studies how popular culture influences the adults we become, specializing in how race, class and gender are reflected in children’s media. Bell also serves as a diversity and inclusiveness consultant with Pixar animation studios and several universities.
MARGARET HARRIS ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR HELEN AND ARTHUR E. JOHNSON BETH-EL COLLEGE OF NURSING AND HEALTH SCIENCES As a girl, Margaret Harris knew she wanted to grow up to help people but didn’t know in what role. In college, a friend told her about epidemiology, the study of how and why diseases occur in different groups of people. Harris was hooked. “At the time, I was an avid mystery reader, and to me, epidemiology seemed like a mystery to solve,” she said. “There are all these risk factors, and you need to figure out which one is linked to which disease.” She found her place at the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences in 2011 after several epidemiology positions and a series of life-altering events. Along the way, her interests shifted from nutritional epidemiology to community nutrition to integrative nutrition. Harris, also a certified health coach, is coordinator of the UCCS Master of Sciences Sport Nutrition program. Her research and interests today focus on dietary supplements, herbs and functional foods, particularly coconut oil. She has 28 refereed publications and 58 abstracts or poster presentations.
ROD WALKER SENIOR INSTRUCTOR SCHOOL OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS
“ I’m teaching them to go from an emotional look into a very scientific and investigative look.” He worked in many of the police department’s units, including narcotics and vice, K-9, SWAT, bomb squad, juvenile offenders and a specialized domestic violence team. He received a life-saving award for pulling a man from a burning car and two distinguished service awards.

Rod Walker, a senior instructor in the School of Public Affairs, has lived what he’s teaching. He joined UCCS in 2012 after spending nearly 34 years with the police department, retiring as deputy chief. He now teaches courses such as police and society, crime and violence, and homicide.

UCCS Âť ON THE HORIZON
UCCS Downtown will offer the Teacher Leader Academy through the College of Education, the mini-MBA program through the College of Business, concurrent enrollment programs, and certificate programs in nonprofit management, cybersecurity and more. The space will be used to bring traditional academic classes downtown for short-term experiences with community interaction and subject-matter experts.
CYBERSECURITY INITIATIVE The cybersecurity initiative received $1.8 million through Colorado Senate Bill 18-086 for student scholarships, faculty positions and research opportunities. Another $1 million went to the National Cybersecurity Center, located on the UCCS campus, to create a state center of excellence and lead efforts for information sharing between federal and state agencies.
SCHOLARSHIPS UCCS offers many scholarships and grants to qualified students. Many students may be surprised to find scholarships that are a perfect fit for their background and academic goals.
AUTOMATIC ADMISSION SCHOLARSHIPS:
This scholarship is automatically offered to high-achieving, first-time, in-state freshmen. The award amount is $10,000 over four years ($1,250 per semester). The award does not apply to summer. Students admitted prior to March 1 will receive priority consideration.
PEAK SCHOLARSHIP A merit-based scholarship for students paying out-of-state tuition. The maximum award amount is $25,000 over four years ($3,125 per semester). The award does not apply to summer. Students admitted prior to March 1 will receive priority consideration. For additional scholarship opportunities, the UCCS Scholarship Application opens on Dec. 1 each year. Only admitted students have access to this application. With many deadlines ranging from Feb. 1 to March 1, it is encouraged to act quickly and get admitted early.
