DUSTIN BLUHM ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MANAGEMENT COLLEGE OF BUSINESS Influenced early in his career by both bad and inspirational managers, Dr. Dustin Bluhm set his sights on mastering the path to becoming a better leader and manager, informing his doctoral work in Organizational Leadership. Bluhm said the two managers who influenced his path were polar opposites: One great; the other deceptive and manipulative. The differing results of their leadership styles was abundantly clear. “Teaching has always been a passion of mine. Being able to marry my passion for leadership with teaching is a perfect fit. My current goal is to help students analyze their own leadership style and talk about who they hope to become as a leader. Then, we map out steps they need to take and what they need to do to get there.” While helping students realize their leadership goals, Bluhm focuses in on instilling an ethical foundation, as well as the understanding of the science of leadership. Bluhm explained it is his goal to help students take in the science and merge it with their own style to help them avoid growing pains, as well as stay grounded in sound decision making.
SYLVIA MENDEZ CHAIR, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, LEADERSHIP, RESEARCH AND FOUNDATIONS COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Opening access and pathways for students to earn a college degree has fueled Dr. Sylvia Mendez’s passion for the power of education. While reflecting on the path to her Ph.D., she said the research she conducted alongside faculty and staff aided in her decision to give back. She now considers ways to involve everyone from undergraduate students through faculty members in research opportunities. “My favorite part about teaching at UCCS is supporting students. I love helping them in their research pursuits, encouraging their engagement in campus activities, and I always look forward to cheering them on as they walk across the commencement stage and earn their college degree.” Proactive mentorship and support remain critical not just to Mendez’s work, but to the entire College of Education, where Mendez said students are prepared for a diverse array of work environments, inside and outside of schools.
STEVE TRAGESSER ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE When Dr. Steve Tragesser reflected on his time at UCCS, he said he’s been lucky to be among world-class researchers, scientists, engineers, writers, artists and more. He believes that faculty at UCCS have a strong love for providing students with tools to succeed professionally and grow personally. “A lot of my graduates work locally after graduation. They work in missile defense and on satellite systems that protect the U.S. and provide ubiquitous services such as GPS. My job is getting them to be as effective as possible in understanding the principles of dynamics and control to solve problems, do design and perform analysis.” Tragesser said he is fortunate that his area of expertise has direct applicability. He finds it satisfying to teach students something that they can go out and directly apply to a career field. He’s also derived an added benefit: They usually come back to visit able to teach him a thing or two.
KIMBRA SMITH CHAIR, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, ANTHROPOLOGY COLLEGE OF LETTERS, ARTS AND SCIENCES Dr. Kimbra Smith never would have predicted embracing a career of teaching having grown up a shy teenager on a farm. When she was younger, she said she had no idea what anthropology was, nor what the field of anthropology looked like. That all changed when she entered into an exchange student program in high school to study in Ecuador. “After that program, I became aware of a lack of resources and a lack of equality. Going to Ecuador was one of the first ways I was introduced to indigenous peoples, leading to my interest in applied public outreach work.” Now, Smith embraces helping students understand cultural anthropology. She relishes watching students understand different perspectives, instead of being polarized by differences. She’s fueled by a mission of increasing empathy and increasing the understanding among people that they have more similarities than differences.
ANDREW SUBUDHI CHAIR, PROFESSOR, HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY & NUTRITION HELEN AND ARTHUR E. JOHNSON BETH-EL COLLEGE OF NURSING AND HEALTH SCIENCES Dr. Andrew Subudhi grew up with the dream of becoming a professional athlete, but he quickly realized he would starve if he staked his livelihood on his athletic talent. This insight led him to pursue higher education, and eventually a Ph.D. that allowed him to work with professional- and Olympic-level athletes. “Finding the connection between my passion and education felt like winning the lottery. At UCCS, I get to do things I’m really passionate about and I want to inspire students to find something they’re really passionate about, too. I believe the professors across campus feel the same way.” Today, Subudhi is fueled by a passion for the soon-to-launch Hybl Sports Medicine and Performance Center, which he described as an academic milestone that nobody else in the country can offer. The Hybl Center will blend educational classrooms and labs alongside a working sports medicine clinic and performance center, which Subudhi said will lead to unparalleled opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students.
CATHERINE SIMMONS
Impacting the lives of those who face challenges fuels Dr. Catherine Simmons’ love for social work, a profession and area of study she explored after she met a victim’s assistance social worker. From that day forward, onto her Ph.D., she’s loved everything about being a social worker. “Our Clients often meet us during the most difficult time of their lives, and we help them find solutions. We impact the lives of those who can’t always speak for themselves. Simply put, we help others. We change lives.” The mantra of helping others fits well within the School of Public Affairs, which is launching the new Bachelor and Master of Social Work in 2020. Simmons said the School of Public Affairs excels at the whole of service, training leaders to serve the public.

AWARDS CREDITED TO YOUR BILL All financial aid awards (excluding work-study) are credited to your UCCS student billing account, generally beginning the week prior to the start of each semester. Work-study funds are earned over the course of the academic year and are paid to you according to the University’s payroll schedule. SCHOLARSHIPS UCCS offers many scholarships and grants to qualified students. Many students may be surprised to find scholarships that are a perfect fit for their background and academic goals.
UCCS CHANCELLOR’S AWARD This scholarship is automatically offered to high-achieving, first-time, Colorado freshmen. The award amount is $10,000 over four years ($1,250 per semester). The award does not apply to summer. Students admitted prior to March 1 will receive priority consideration.
PEAK SCHOLARSHIP A merit-based scholarship for students paying out-of-state tuition. The maximum award amount is $25,000 over four years ($3,125 per semester). The award does not apply to summer. Students admitted prior to March 1 will receive priority consideration. For additional scholarship opportunities, the UCCS Scholarship Application opens on Dec. 1 each year. Only admitted students have access to this application. With many deadlines ranging from Feb. 1 to March 1, it is encouraged to act quickly and get admitted early.

TRANSFER ADMISSIONS GPA CRITERIA
UCCS considers the following when making admissions decisions:
Once a student has earned 24 college credit hours of transferable courses, admission to UCCS is based on college/university GPA.
GPA 75% of admitted students have a 3.0 or higher high school GPA.
Business Minimum GPA of 3.0 and completion of English Composition 1 and College Algebra
ACT/SAT 75% of admitted students have a minimum ACT score of 20 or higher, or a minimum SAT score of 1070 or higher.
Education Minimum GPA of 2.4
Academic Rigor UCCS utilizes a holistic review of a student’s academic history. This includes, but is not limited to, AP, IB, Honors, and dualenrollment/concurrent enrollment. Freshman students who do not meet the above GPA and/or test scores are still encouraged to apply to UCCS. Consideration can be given to those with special circumstances and applications, essays and letters of recommendations will be reviewed by an admissions committee. Students applying for nursing, business, or engineering who do not meet the above criteria will be considered for admission to the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences until they meet the professional college requirements.
