To achieve an effective reduction in the carbon intensity footprint of our global society will require a multi-prong approach. British Columbia is endowed with plentiful “green” (hydro) electricity, innovative policies such as the low carbon fuels standard, and an innovative forest sector. For example, decarbonizing long distance (planes, ships, trains and trucks) transport will require some form of biofuels. This theme looks at how we move from a hydrocarbon to a carbohydrate society: forest/agricultural resides will be transformed through a biorefinery into chemicals and fuels that are functionally equivalent or superior to the products we now make from oil. In addition to the technical aspects of biorefining the economic, sustainability and policy metrics required to transform our current oil-based society to a more sustainable world will be researched.

The core mission of this theme is to ensure that the innovative technology developments at BPI also entail a sustainable utilization of the resources and environment. Researchers in this theme work closely with other UBC researchers as well as external collaborators to gather the critical information needed for analyzing the sustainability of the novel technologies through simulation, statistical analysis and other industrial ecology methods. This theme also serves as a versatile platform to facilitate communications and collaborations among different stakeholders and governing bodies (e.g., provincial governments, First Nations) involved in forestry, bioenergy, biofuels and bioproduct sectors. These multidisciplinary engagements will lead to a shared vision and values around creating a forest-based bioeconomy that is both socially and environmentally sustainable.

A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION FOR MICROPLASTIC POLLUTION bioCap -

Microplastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, infiltrating waterways and even the drinking water we rely on. Dr. Orlando Rojas, together with postdoctoral researcher Tianyu Guo and PhD student Marina Mehling, have developed a promising solution to address this issue. Their innovative filter, bioCap, combines tannins, an extract from wood bark, and wood dust to trap up to 99.9% of microplastic particles, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic-based filtration systems.

Laboratory tests showed that the bioCap filter is effective against a wide range of microplastics, including microfibers, microbeads, and foams. When tested in mouse models, it successfully prevented microplastic accumulation in organs. Conducted at BPI in collaboration with Dr. Junling Guo of Sichuan University, this research demonstrates a scalable and cost-effective approach to improving water safety for both households and municipal systems.

The breakthrough has attracted international attention, with coverage from Yahoo News, Science Daily, and other major science and media outlets. Building on this momentum, UBC’s Forward campaign centered around the project to support the next phase of development and bring this innovation closer to real-world applications.

BREAKING DOWN PFAS “FOREVER CHEMICAL”

Dr. Johan Foster, Dr. Raphaell Moreira, and Master’s student Pani Rostami developed an innovative water treatment system to remove and degrade per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as “forever chemicals.” The approach combines activated carbon filtration with a patented catalyst to capture PFAS and breaks them down into benign components, providing an integrated solution to water contamination.

Laboratory results showed that the catalyst removed over 85% of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), even under low ultraviolet light, supporting its effectiveness across a range of operating conditions. Designed as a low-cost and scalable technology for municipal and industrial applications, the catalyst can be produced from forest or agricultural waste, strengthening its sustainability profile. Supported by an NSERC Discovery Grant, the research was published in Nature Communications Engineering and received national media coverage, including The Globe and Mail and CBC Radio.

HOW MUCH MICROPLASTICS ARE YOU DRINKING?

A novel device developed by Dr. Tianxi Yang and Master’s student Peter Yang enables rapid detection of micro- and nanoplastics in liquids within minutes. The system integrates fluorescent labeling with a wireless digital microscope housed in a 3D-printed enclosure, a green LED light source, and supporting software to detect plastic particles ranging from approximately 50 nanometres to 10 microns. Testing with polystyrene disposable cups containing boiling water revealed the release of hundreds of millions of nano-sized plastic particles as the water cooled. While currently calibrated for polystyrene, the device can be adapted for other plastics, and each test costs only a fraction of a cent, supporting potential applications in food safety testing, regulatory monitoring, and consumer use. The research received national and international media coverage, including Yahoo Finance, ScienceDaily, Global News, and the National Post.

COST-EFFECTIVE PHOSPHORUS RECOVERY FROM MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER

Dr. Cigdem Eskicioglu and her team at UBC Okanagan’s Bioreactor Technology Group have developed a cost-effective method to recover phosphorus—a nonrenewable but essential nutrient—from municipal wastewater sludge. Their process uses heat, water, and phase separation to convert organic sludge into a biocrude while concentrating phosphorus into a solid residue called hydrochar. The resulting hydrochar can contain up to 100 times more phosphorus than raw sludge, making it comparable to phosphate rock used in fertilizers. This innovation not only creates a secondary source of phosphorus but also helps reduce environmental burdens from wastewater discharge.

Good progress has been made both technically and with engaging partners. The team is now working with the BC Pulp and Paper Bioproducts Alliance collaboration to start a project that will include sampling residues from 5 different mills in British Columbia, applying treatment procedures, conducting analytical tests, producing mortar and concrete samples, and testing these samples for mechanical strength and durability relative to the industry requirements.

“Anytime we can redirect waste to a sustainable alternative, we are heading in the right direction,” says Dr. Siddiqua who leads the Advanced Geomaterials Testing Lab, focused uncovering different reuse options for industry byproducts.

REDUCING THE GHG FOOTPRINT OF CEMENT

Wood-based pulp mill fly ash is a non-hazardous industrial byproduct that is typically disposed of in landfills. Research led by Dr. Siddiqua Sumi and her team at UBC Okanagan has shown that this underused material can significantly reduce the greenhouse gas footprint of concrete. Their findings demonstrate that the cementation bonds formed using untreated woody fly ash are exceptionally strong, resulting in little to no chemical release. “Because these bonds are so stable, the material behaves safely and reliably,” says Dr. Siddiqua. “This makes wood-based fly ash a promising low-carbon alternative for concrete applications.”

SPIKELESS: A DISCREET TOOL FOR DRINK SAFETY

Dr. Johan Foster, working with PhD student Samin Yousefi and anti-violence activist Sasha Santos, has developed Spikeless, a single-use stir stick designed to detect common drinkspiking drugs, including GHB and ketamine, in approximately 30 seconds. The device features a bioplastic tip coated with a chemical sensor that changes colour when harmful concentrations are detected and functions in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Designed to be discreet, affordable, and scalable, Spikeless addresses key limitations of existing detection tools such as cups or straws. The simple format supports use in bars, restaurants, festivals, and other public venues, shifting responsibility for drink safety away from individuals and toward venue-level prevention. The project integrates lived-experience perspectives with technical innovation, reflecting a proactive approach to reducing drink-spiking–related harm and sexual assault.

First envisioned by Dr. Foster and his brother in 2011, the concept has undergone three years of development at UBC. The team is now preparing for real-world testing and commercialization. Spikeless has received national media coverage, including CBC News, National Post, and CTV Morning Live.

FROM LIGNIN AND BITUMEN TO CARBON FIBRE

A UBC-based startup Fibernx Technologies is gaining recognition in Alberta and British Columbia for converting lignin and oil sands bitumen into high-value carbon nanofibres. Led by materials engineer Dr. Yasmine Abdin, with collaborators Dr. Scott Renneckar and Dr. Frank Ko, the team is advancing scalable fibre-production pathways using electrospinning and melt spinning.

One approach transforms bitumen—traditionally used as fuel or asphalt—into sub-micron carbon fibres approximately 500 nanometres in diameter. A second analogous approach uses lignin as a feedstock to achieve a similar outcome. Electrospinning enables the formation of ultra-fine fibre meshes, while melt spinning supports continuous fibre production from easily melted polymers, including water-wet oil sands.

Fibernx is a leading competitor in the Carbon Fibre Grand Challenge, a $20-million initiative powered by Alberta Innovates to accelerate commercialization of bitumen-derived carbon fibre. The team has advanced through the first two phases and is now demonstrating pre-commercial production. Fibernx has also been named a Top 10 finalist in the New Ventures BC Competition, highlighting its growing role in Canada’s clean materials ecosystem

BAMBOO-BASED ALTERNATIVE TO SINGLE-USE PLASTICS

Master’s student Camryn Collette has developed a PFAS-free bamboo takeout container as a sustainable alternative to single-use plastics. Building on her background in environmental studies, her graduate research in forestry is conducted under the supervision of Dr. Chunping Dai an expert in bamboo-based materials.

Unlike many compostable containers that rely on PFAS for grease resistance, Collette’s design uses a starch-based coating that avoids these persistent “forever chemicals.” The bamboo containers biodegrade in natural conditions within six months, meeting compostability standards and supporting home composting.

With bamboo’s rapid growth and regenerative harvesting, the containers offer a viable alternative to plastic and paper packaging. With costs expected to be comparable to plastic, Collette aims to commercialize the product as British Columbia continues to phase out harmful and hard-to-recycle single-use plastics.

FUNGI-BASED LIVING BUILDING MATERIALS

Dr. Joseph Dahmen and Dr. Nicholas Lin are developing fungi-based “engineered living materials” that could reduce the environmental impact of construction and support climate adaptation. Their work integrates architecture and microbiology to create building materials using edible fungi such as oyster, reishi, and turkey tail mushrooms.

These materials combine living mycelium with cellulose-rich byproducts, including sawdust and agricultural waste, allowing them to grow, adapt, and potentially respond to environmental conditions. Unlike conventional mycelium composites that are heat-treated, this research explores the benefits of keeping the organisms alive. While fully living buildings remain a long-term vision, early prototypes suggest promising applications in insulation, temperature regulation, and future air-filtration as climate pressures intensify.
