2019 Mercedes-Benz C200 review
As Mercedes-Benz Australia’s passenger car lineup steadily spreads across a never-ending range of market niches the evergreen C-Class remains the backbone of the brand’s local offering and sales. The upgraded Mercedes-Benz C200 doesn’t look a lot different, but there are plenty of changes under the skin to tempt you, including a brand new entry engine and improved interior displays. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the most-purchased luxury car in Australia, and has been class leader for more than a decade. But with the spectre of a brand-new BMW 3 Series looming, competition is about to heat up.
For a brand like Mercedes-Benz the challenge of respecting the look established by cars that have gone before, gelling with other models in the current range, and moving things far enough forward to generate fresh interest is a delicate one. Focus too much on any one of those three elements and the design will be too retro, too similar, or too adventurous.
So it’s good timing for the brand to release an upgraded version of its now four-year-old staple, encompassing the mainstream sedan version, the sleek wagon, and the coupe and convertible sporty spinoffs.
And notwithstanding the fact the way anything looks is a subjective call, I think the Mercedes-Benz C-Class manages that juggling act just about perfectly.
While the revised range doesn’t look much different - a tweaked grille here, new LED headlights there - Mercedes reckons it has changed a staggering 6500 parts compared to the outgoing models, equating to about half the component set. Same skin, new organs.
Signature elements like the sizable three-pointed star in the grille, joined to chrome louvres either side leave you in no doubt about who manufactured the car. But beyond that, the C-Class’s overall proportions make it instantly recognisable as a Benz. A relatively long bonnet, with the cabin set well back results in a short, high rear decklid, with chrome accents around the side glass, along the rocker panels, across the boot lid and surrounding the exhaust outlets adding a hint of traditional bling.

Mercedes-Benz GLC 2019 review: SUV and Coupe
The redesign of the Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV and Coupe models is modest - this isn’t an exaggerated mid-life cycle change, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the GLC has forged a reputation both on its substance, and its style.
Mercedes-Benz has upgraded its top-selling GLC, giving the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 some stiffer competition. This is a review following our first drive at the international launch event in Germany. The revised range picks up new entry engines that we’ll be looking at here, overhauled infotainment software, a greater array of suspension configurations, and safety technologies trickled down from ritzier fare such as the S-Class limo.
Mercedes says the regular SUV models adopt a “sportier” appearance as part of the update, with new LED daytime running lights to frame the new standard full-LED headlights, and there’s a revised grille and bumper, depending on the model. Versions with the AMG trim line will have the “diamond” grille which now has more of an ‘A’ shape rather than a ‘V’ design. The 10.25-inch touchscreen multimedia system (expected to be standard in Australia) has the “Hey Mercedes” voice control system. The brand has made a big deal about this system, which also has an Artificial Intelligence element to it, meaning it’ll learn your habits, and aim to please you more and more over time. New additions to the GLC interior include MBUX and multimedia system, consisting of two high-resolution digital screens: the first being a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and the second a tablet on top of the middle of the dash that manages major controls and media.
You’d need an eye for detail to immediately spot the exterior changes to the refreshed GLC, but they exist. The reshaped grille gets an optional diamond mesh backing with single or twin-louvre inserts. Both get new ‘high performance’ LED headlights and tail lights, tweaked rear bumpers and new alloy wheel patterns. The changes are far more evident on the inside. The lower portion of the centre fascia is the same, but the 10.25-inch landscape screen is new, and runs the company’s MBUX infotainment system familiar from the new A-Class, though oddly enough not found in the updated C-Class which shares much of the GLC’s architecture.

Product Information Tour for Sales Managers Mercedes-Benz Sales Managers that won the PIT Incentive in Q2 were immersed in the Mercedes-Benz brand recently in Europe. In a challenging market it is important to remember the history of Mercedes-Benz and the trip to the home of Mercedes-Benz not only formed as a reminder of the value of the brand for those that have a strong impact on the market, but also gave them the opportunity to build some great relationships with other Managers around the country.
A visit to the Mercedes-Benz Plant in Sindelfingen where the E-Class (Saloon and Estate), S-Class (Saloon, Coupé, Cabriolet), CLS, Mercedes-Maybach, Mercedes-AMG GT family and GLA are produced. Here we saw S-Class being produced (most heading to China) and received a tour of the press shop facility and making of the panels for many of our vehicles.
Following this, we ventured by bus to the Mercedes-Benz Museum and then onto the Classic Centre where many customer cars and vehicles destined for the Museum are rebuilt including one of Fangio’s Formula 1 Cars and one of only a few 300SLRs that has a likely value of over $100M. A visit to the AMG Factory where we saw AMG engines being hand made as well as vehicles being prepared for the IAA Frankfurt Motorshow including unreleased models. After lunch with fantastic view, we were off on a long bus trip to Maastricht in the Netherlands, which was to be our base for the visit to the Customer Assistance Centre in Maastricht and then the Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix located 1 hour away in Spa. Day 3 was a visit to the Customer Assistance Centre, an international multicultural organization and an integrated part of Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales. In these offices the 1700 employees assume a leading role for the Mercedes-Benz Customer Assistance Centres all over the world. This was followed by a VESPA Tour of Maastricht including 2 crashes, resulting in 1 broken finger from a surprise cyclist and 1 rash from non-deliberate resting in the local Maastricht flora. Day 4 & 5 was spent in Spa-Francorchamps at the Belgian F1 Grand Prix. Mercedes finished the F1 with a 2nd and 3rd on the podium on a weekend.
