WHAT IS THE MERCEDES-BENZ A200 SEDAN? While it might be the smallest Mercedes sedan you can currently buy, the W177 A200 Sedan isn’t short on premium punch. If the swoopy CLA (due to be updated with even larger dimensions) isn’t your thing and a hatchback is a no-go, the A-Class sedan could be the perfect niche-filler. Sitting below the staid C-Class, this baby Benz is the cheapest sedan offering until the A180 arrives later this year.
Mercedes-Benz Australia has announced pricing and specifications for the all-new 2019 GLE range, which is on sale now. Starting at $99,900 plus on-roads for the entry-level GLE300d, the new-generation SUV will launch with three engine variants sporting a range of new equipment and technology compared to the outgoing model, along with a starting price that undercuts rivals like the BMW X5. The base model comes fitted as standard with a dual 12.3-inch MBUX infotainment setup, ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice recognition, ‘Mercedes me Connect’ services, configurable ambient lighting (64 colours), a head-up display, Artico leatherette upholstery, nappa leather steering wheel, heated front seats, open-pore oak wood trim, DAB+ digital radio, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Other standard inclusions across the range include Multibeam LED headlights with adaptive highbeam, aluminium roof rails and running boards, a powered tailgate, 20-inch five-spoke alloys, a 360-degree surround camera, an automated parking assistant, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, steering assist, lane change assist, blind-spot assist, and the company’s Pre-Safe Plus predictive collision protection technology. A range of optional packages will also be available, including seven seats ($3900), the AMG Sport Package ($9900), the Night Package ($4800), the Airmatic Package ($3400), and the Vision Package ($4200) –
At face value there seems little need for the A-Class Sedan with the existence of the coupe-esque CLA four-door. However, the latter is growing in size, leaving space below it for the more conventional small sedan, one that will battle Audi’s A3 and provide a more affordable entry point. For now the only Sedan option is the $49,400 A200, with the entry-level $44,900 A180 to arrive later this year along with A250 variants. A stove-hot A35 AMG is also in the mix. While the A200 might be the smallest Mercedes four-door, it doesn’t miss out on wow factor, mixing opulence with new-age glamour. It really is a welcoming, uplifting place to be. Twin 10.25inch screens dominate the dash and offer resounding clarity, while the turbine vents add a cool factor and the mood lighting sets the ambience. There’s also a host of standard and cost-option features too long to detail here.

By Tony O’Kane, 25 Jun 2019 Car News The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is now officially on sale, with pricing for the large premium SUV beginning at $99,900 for the GLE 300d and topping out at $118,500 for the GLE 400d, with the petrol-powered GLE 450 sitting in the middle at $111,700 to complement the two diesels.

That represents a $7000 entry-level price bump compared to the outgoing model, whose GLE 250d range opener retailed at $92,900 but offered 30kW less power than the new 180kW/500Nm four-cylinder GLE 300d.
The cheapest Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class isn’t the only variant to get a mechanical shake-up, though, with the GLE 400d and GLE 450 also boasting brand-new powertrains under their bonnets. Both equipped with 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-sixes, the 400d sips diesel and produces a stout 243kW and 700Nm – a solid step on the previous-generation GLE 350d, which generated a more modest 190kW and 620Nm. However it’s the petrol-electric Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 that’s the performance star until full-fledged AMG GLE variants arrive. Making 270kW and 500Nm from its turbo six-cylinder it already has plenty of muscle, but thanks to a 48-volt electrical system and an electric assistance motor it can pump an additional 16kW and 250Nm on top of those outputs to further boost performance.

Mercedes-Benz A 200 sedan Local Launch Daylesford, Vic Mercedes-Benz has fixed a usefully large boot to the rear of the A-Class small car – without detracting from the car’s aerodynamic properties. In fact, the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan has achieved a new record for a series-production passenger car with its drag coefficient of 0.22Cd. The company is launching the new body style in Australia with the A 200 variant ($49,400) featuring more power and torque than the entry-level A 180 coming in August 2019.
Mercedes-Benz doesn’t expect the all-new A-Class sedan launched this week in Melbourne to buck this trend, but it still thinks it’s a worthy, common-sense middle ground between the hatch and the sportier CLA coupe. And the A-Class sedan is a nice looker, well proportioned and sleek. It’s the most aerodynamic production passenger car ever made, beating out the CLA with a 0.22 drag coefficient. We also prefer the back end to the CLA’s droopy rear end. But it’s not just appearances. The sedan has a 6mm higher roof than the hatch, is 130mm longer and gets comfort seats as standard, rather than single-piece seats. Of course it also has a bigger boot, with a healthy 420 litres, bettering the hatch by 50 litres. If you opt for the keyless pack you also get a hands-free opening boot, which the hatch doesn’t get. It has a 1.3-litre four- cylinder turbo-petrol engine offering 100kW/200Nm and standard gear will include the excellent MBUX infotainment system found in the hatch, digital radio, 17inch wheels, traffic sign assist and more.
Conventional three-box sedans are not renowned for being aerodynamically efficient. But Mercedes-Benz has apparently happened upon a workable formula. Beginning with the W212 E-Class (0.25Cd), Benz has been developing four-door passenger cars with enviable aerodynamic qualities and placing them in production. The latest sedan from Stuttgart to push the envelope is the booted Mercedes-Benz A-Class, which has set a new record, according to the manufacturer, with a drag coefficient of 0.22Cd. And the Mercedes-Benz A-Class is bringing its aero-design sedan smarts to Australia, initially in the form of the A 200, which was launched this week (June 2019).
EDITORIAL Is there a place for the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class here?
The all-new third-generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class has lost some of the previous gen’s frumpiness and gained tech, refinement and plushness. Rob Margeit CULTURE AND LIFESTYLE EDITOR The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is a car that defies classification. It’s not a people mover, although its boxy and tall dimensions lend it an air of one. It’s not a hatchback, certainly not in the traditional sense, and neither is it a station wagon, even if its side profile hints at a wagon-esque form. And it’s certainly no SUV.
The Mercedes-Benz B-Class has always been a niche player in the Australian car market. We never really took to sensible people-movers like they did in Europe, so the SUV has risen supreme. That leaves the B-Class in a compact premium ‘mini-van’ class almost to itself, except for the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer – even if BMW hates us calling it a people-mover. Regardless of the small sales volumes, Mercedes-Benz Australia will persist in offering the third-generation B-Class, which will arrive on local shores mid next-year.
So, what is it then? Mercedes-Benz, for its part, calls it a ‘sports tourer’, a name that belies its slightly frumpy appearance. To my eyes, it looks like a hatchback for tall people.
Reflecting the limited market for the people-mover, the range offered in Australia is likely to be very slim indeed. While both petrol and diesel engines will be available overseas it’s only the 1.33-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that will be offered here, at least initially.
No surprise then that the new third-generation B-Class shares its underpinnings with the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class – right down to the same 2729mm wheelbase, which is an increase of 30mm over the outgoing model, but still way down on the original’s 2786mm wheelbase. But whereas the A-Class sits at 1440mm tall, the B-Class’s roofline is a whopping 122mm higher, standing at 1562mm.
Conclusion The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is an interesting conundrum. On the one hand its lack of definability means it will surely be overlooked, but on the other, Mercedes-Benz has thrown so much content at it, that is worth a look for drivers that want a car chocked full of comfort features, technology and driver assistance aids.
Mercedes-Benz knows who its customer is for the B-Class and with this, the third-generation of its popular, if quirky, ‘sports tourer’, has pandered to that demographic handsomely. Would I buy one? Ask me in nine years.
