Mercedes-Benz Vans has rolled out the first special edition of its X350d flagship ute, called (imaginatively enough) the Edition 1. Mercedes-Benz Australia has again reset the benchmark for how much a dual-cab pick-up is worth, with its limited-edition X350d 4Matic Edition 1
Car brands love rolling out blinged-up pickups, considering the average buyer spends a few grand on options and accessories anyway. In lieu of a Mercedes-AMG X-Class, this cosmetic pack will have to suffice.
Based on the X350d 4Matic Power full-time flagship, the Edition 1 attracts an $8085 premium but adds several accessories and black cosmetic enhancements – all of which are fitted locally – to create a more menacing look.
The styling pack gives you a black Benz star badge and radiator grille, fog light surrounds, bumper bits, tailgate handle, belt-line trim, roof rails and 19-inch six-spoke alloy wheels.
The German brand says the Edition 1 is exclusive to the Australian market and only available for a limited amount of time, during which it is expects to sell 200 to 300 examples. Accessories include a sports bar, tubular side steps and a sprayon bedliner, all of which are black, as well as a body-colour hard tonneau cover. Inside, ‘Edition 1’ branded floormats feature alongside a chrome ‘Edition 1’ badge on the passenger side of the dashboard. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, rear privacy glass and a power-operated rear window are also standard equipment, while advanced driver-assist systems extend to autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane-keep assist.
There are also some stuck-on stripes, a black bar in the tub, a protective bed-liner and a hard tonneau cover fitted too. Inside you get Edition 1 embroidery, a chrome badge, leather seats, rear privacy glass and an electric rear window. The Edition 1 standard metallic paint will be available in three different colours, kabara black, bering white or rock grey. However when it comes to the exterior parts, “black is the order of the day”. The Edition 1 has no engine changes, retaining the 190kW/550Nm V6 diesel donk, seven-speed auto and 4Matic 4x4 with permanent road-oriented AWD and proper low-range. The tow rating is 3.5t.

Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door 2020 review
First drive of AMG’s new 470kW/900Nm four-door beast.
Mercedes-AMG can barely keep up with the Aussie appetite for its pumped-up hot rods, with around 20 per cent of all Mercs sold here being of the AMG variety. And this is its latest piece of finely tuned German muscle to reach our shores – the GT 63 S 4-Door Coupe.
On paper the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT63 S is a tough sell. At face value it’s a swoopier, sportier version of the traditional E63 S sedan, a car with which it shares its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, nine-speed automatic gearbox and 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, but at $349,900 the GT63 S is a full $100K dearer than its more sensible sibling. It offers an extra 20kW/50Nm as compensation, but it still seems a steep ask for shaving 0.2sec from the 0-100km/h claim.
It’s been launched alongside the in-line six-cylinder turbo powered GT 53 4-Door Coupe, and the boffins from Affalterbach have created an ultra-rigid missile fresh from the ground up, in the flagship’s case packing a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 pumping out 470kW (630hp) and 900Nm. At a fraction over 5.0 metres long and just under 1.9 metres wide, the GT 4-Door Coupe is substantial, but an overall height under 1.5 metres sets up an aggressive stance that screams speed. It has to be said that calling this car a four-door is a bit cheeky because technically it’s a hatch, and to my eyes at least the gentle rearward slope of the turret and large cargo door enhances the design’s understated power.
Dig a little deeper, however, and the GT63’s case becomes stronger. The chassis is based on the same Modular Rearwheel drive Architecture (MRA) that underpins a whole heap of Mercedes models, but it’s been heavily re-engineered by AMG, the structure strengthened to improve response and handle the increased lateral loads. The E63 is impressive to a certain (extremely high) level, at which point its luxury sedan roots become evident, whereas AMG’s latest creation feels to have high performance in its DNA – it’s the most impressive, cohesive driver’s car Affalterbach currently offers and that includes the GT two-doors.

By Tony O’Kane, 25 Jun 2019 Car News The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is now officially on sale, with pricing for the large premium SUV beginning at $99,900 for the GLE 300d and topping out at $118,500 for the GLE 400d, with the petrol-powered GLE 450 sitting in the middle at $111,700 to complement the two diesels.
Mercedes-Benz Australia has announced pricing and specifications for the all-new 2019 GLE range, which is on sale now. Starting at $99,900 plus on-roads for the entry-level GLE300d, the new-generation SUV will launch with three engine variants sporting a range of new equipment and technology compared to the outgoing model, along with a starting price that undercuts rivals like the BMW X5. The base model comes fitted as standard with a dual 12.3-inch MBUX infotainment setup, ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice recognition, ‘Mercedes me Connect’ services, configurable ambient lighting (64 colours), a head-up display, Artico leatherette upholstery, nappa leather steering wheel, heated front seats, open-pore oak wood trim, DAB+ digital radio, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Other standard inclusions across the range include Multibeam LED headlights with adaptive highbeam, aluminium roof rails and running boards, a powered tailgate, 20-inch five-spoke alloys, a 360-degree surround camera, an automated parking assistant, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, steering assist, lane change assist, blind-spot assist, and the company’s Pre-Safe Plus predictive collision protection technology. A range of optional packages will also be available, including seven seats ($3900), the AMG Sport Package ($9900), the Night Package ($4800), the Airmatic Package ($3400), and the Vision Package ($4200) – see bottom of article for details.
That represents a $7000 entry-level price bump compared to the outgoing model, whose GLE 250d range opener retailed at $92,900 but offered 30kW less power than the new 180kW/500Nm four-cylinder GLE 300d.
The cheapest Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class isn’t the only variant to get a mechanical shake-up, though, with the GLE 400d and GLE 450 also boasting brand-new powertrains under their bonnets. Both equipped with 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-sixes, the 400d sips diesel and produces a stout 243kW and 700Nm – a solid step on the previous-generation GLE 350d, which generated a more modest 190kW and 620Nm. However it’s the petrol-electric Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 that’s the performance star until full-fledged AMG GLE variants arrive. Making 270kW and 500Nm from its turbo six-cylinder it already has plenty of muscle, but thanks to a 48-volt electrical system and an electric assistance motor it can pump an additional 16kW and 250Nm on top of those outputs to further boost performance.
